One of the best fielders in ML history. He couldn’t hit ML pitching but was a regular because of his glove play - One of the very few players who achieved that. ✌️
The 1999 Mets set three major league records: fewest errors by a team (68) fewest unearned runs given up (20) and fewest errors by a starting infield (33) and Ordonez was a big part of that.
I literally was gonna write, The Best Three Shortstops of All Time: Rey Ordonez, Ozzie Smith, and Omar Vizquel.... I think you can compare the three... but they are ahead of the field by a mile
@@axelagosto5196 and they could hit the ball back then too. But hit more for average than power. Now they hit more home runs, but look at their averages. So many SS and 2nd basemen hovering around .200. And since they're so much bulkier now they're less agile and less range on defense. So they basically don't try to improve their defense every year. They just suck enough on defense until their position is changed. Or they just DH
@Shinobi33 He is a mediocre batter and his base percentage was bad,the problem is when don't have a dh you basically have 2 easy outs in your line up .
@@axelagosto5196 He was a light hitting SS. But I'd rather have a light hitting defensive wizard on my team than a slow, plunking range less SS with 20+ HRs but he's hitting .188. That's baseball today. I'll the 90s ⚾ over today's game any day.
Just imagine Rey was usually benched when playing for Industriales, his Cuban team, because there was someone better than him. Germán "The Magnet/Magician" Mesa. It's a pity he never defected.
To many things we can say about the reasons why Ordóñez did not have the opportunity to play back in Cuba .German was a good short stop but not even close to Rey
Can someone explain to me why in the play starting at 1:30 the runner dives into home, and doesn’t simply step on the plate? There is no tag here, and no danger of overrunning the base. Almost nobody slides or dives into 1st base, so why do that on a force play at home?
1) The catcher's foot was blocking part of the plate 2) Maybe he thought he could get there a split second faster by diving 3) Maybe he tripped a bit and started to fall and just went with it.
Rey was a Great Fielder and a Bad Hitter but more than anything He was a Terribly Person. Rey abandoned his Wife and Child that he left behind in CUBA and remarried and started a New Family here in the United States.
4:55. That's gotta be embarrassing for the second baseman, to be waiting for the ball, only to have the shortstop range way out of his area to cut in front of you and snag it. It's a true 'Kelly Leak' moment. I'd be pretty pissed.
I thought the same thing but the 2nd baseman should have more aggresive. Runner would have been safe at 1st base if it wasnt for Ordoñez making that play.
This guy was overrated. Diving for balls that other short stops in his era made standing up. Vizquel, Tejada, A Rod, Jeter, Garciapara, Guillen, Larkin, Weiss, etc
He dove for balls that were way out of his range to make the play and that's why he made lots of errors. But the balls that he dove for SS like tejada and especially Jeter wouldn't be able to make a play on ever
@@joel8692 There's no need to dive for balls that are hit directly towards the second baseman, cut in front of him and snag it. The second baseman has a right to be pissed off.
Ordoñez couldn't hit but man could he field. It was a joy to watch him play short.

A magician. We need Rey at the next Mets Old-Timers Day!
I agree
Make it happen!

You read my mind. Just a few days ago I was thinking of looking up Rey Ordonez highlights.
Ken Griffey and Rey Ordonez made me watch baseball the way they played defense going all out.
Very good comment . Totally agree !
Defensively at SS
3. Ozzie Smith
2. Omar Vizquel
1(by a mile). Rey Ordonez

You might not have seen him play, but: Mark Belanger
@@AABB-bm9kk I heard the name. Never seen play.
Andrelton Simmons is the best I've seen
Ordonez might have been the best, but only for a very short while..those other 2 guys had amazing longevity, which Rey lacked.
He's the reason I'm a Mets fan! LFGM!
This is content I could watch all day
Rey Ordonez was amazing. Would love to see him at the next old timers game.
Wow! That’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time. This guy was an absolute wizard with the glove.
Grew up watching this guy at Shea stadium what an absolute wizard at SS
Uno de los mejores infields: Olerud, Alfonzo, Ordóñez y Ventura.
I miss baseball during the 90's rey ordonez was amazing.
my favorite shortstop hes couldnt hit but damn the way hes field
Best defensive shortstop EVER!!
Wow. Hadn’t heard of this guy. Incredible.
How old are you lol damn maybe I’m old
Great player💪
Thanks for the silky smooth 60fps movie!
I hope somebody shows this to Lindor. We used to BOW to this guy.
Rey cant hit and lindor can.
Fantastic!!!
No shortstop like him in baseball today. Him and Alphonzo were a twin killing machine.
Definitely the ss today can hit the ball😂😂😂😂

The 1999 Mets were wonderful to watch.
Man, watching this highlight reel brings back great childhood memories. I wanted to hit like Ken Griffey Jr. and play D like Rey Ordonñez…
Reminds me of asdrubal Cabrera. What a magician
The best defensive shortstop in METS' history hands down.
Loved rey!
Ooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhh Rey ain't no joke!
AAAHHHHHH MAAZZIIINNGGGG !!!💯👏🏼🤘🏼
Platinum glove
Rey The Kings!!!! Cubans are excellent players but El Rey Ordóñez de best of the Best🐐✌🏾👌🏾👍🏽
Ordonez, Alfonso, Ventura, Olerud....best defensive infield in history.
Rey Ordoneaz, wow. thats a name I forgot about 😂
If only he wasn't a career .246 hitter. He was obviously a terrific defensive player.
It’s funny though because nobody would look twice at .246 nowadays. Better than 60% of our current lineup.
Today, .246 is pretty darn good.
@@Zane_ZaminskyYeah, .246 with absolutely zero power or pop, or speed
Wow great defense
Ray's over there making some amazing plays but his teammates look like they're showing no emotion at all😂
Noticed the same thing
Niño mi hermano tú eres el mejor
Excelente jugador
Outside of Visquel and Ozzie Smith, Ordóñez is the best I’ve ever seen
Sweet! 😲
He is Mets`s magic
Great player, didn't have Ozzie's range, (but had a better arm).
Do John Mcdonald Next
If only he could hit a bit with the Mets winning a championship, he would have been in the HOF.

As good as any SS I ever saw.
but he had a lot errors as well and like a hiter he was a 0 to the left side
Dudes glove should be in jail, it straight murdered base hits.😂
Came to bat in too many critical moments in '00 WS. You just can't be a one sided player in MLB.
.246. Nobody was beating that Yankees team
Javy Baez before Javy Baez.
He was the second best SS in Cuba only second to Germán Mesa.
Cuba
EL MEJOR TONY FERNANDEZ A LO QUE ORDOÑE Y VIZQUEL LE LLEGABAN DE TIRANDOSE FERNANDEZ LE LLEGABA DE PIES Y BATEABA MUCHO MAS QUE LOS 2
He may feild like Smith but he hit like shit.
.246
