Ozzie won 13 straight gold gloves, played 18 years the last 15 with the Cardinals, went to three world series. Ozzie's a first ballot hall of famer and the best defensive player in baseball history.

Rey lived down the street from my house. I grew up with his son. Rey was always very humble, at times he would gather the neighborhood kids and play ball with us. Rey is the GOAT.
So what if he was a light hitter. He won three consecutive Gold Gloves from 1997-1999. During 1999 and 2000 he set a MLB record for shortstops by playing 101 consecutive games without committing a fielding error. And he wasn’t an automatic out. In 1999, batting 8th, he hit .258 and drove in 60 runs on a team that made the NLCS. But yeah oh what a fielder.
Likely would have been four in a row if he didn't break his arm early in 2000. I think that injury sapped a bit of his magnificence. Just wasn't the same
I always want my shortstop being defense first which is why we are blessed with Lindor right now. Lindor is clearly not as good defensively as Ordonez was but he's damn good and he's also a great hitter. On a tangent, depending on how the rest of this year (2024 for all you reading this in the future) and the rest of his career goes, he could make his way into a best SS of all time conversation or at least top 5. He has done it with power, so far only being outdone by A-Rod, Ernie Banks and maybe Cal Ripken. He's done it with defense, he's no Ozzie or Ordonez, but he's an insanely good combination of both of those things.
Rey is one of those great defenders that were underrated and one of those under estimated players by the organization. The spotlight being on Derek Jeter in NY undermined his magnificent work! He gave his body for the team! Cheers to Rey wherever he is!

Ed Taubensee scorched one through the hole--or so I thought. Before I could turn my head, Ordonez slid to his right to snag it, threw to first for the out. There was no hole on that side of the field when he was there.
It was a real pleasure watching Rey play shortstop. Ozzie Smith is the only SS that I would put in his category. ..Watching these clips brought back a lot of memories.

It also highlights the difference between him and Alfonso defensively. Rey ranged 7 steps to his left to cut off Alfonso who didn't even charge the slow hit ball. Alfonso would've caught, thrown it to first and would think nothing of the running being safe.

I knew his kid growing up. He and I would play and talk a little baseball back in the day. I never knew who his father was until later. Just knew he played in the big leagues. Lol, Rey was one of those little league parents that was too emotionally attached to the games if you know what I mean 😂

My favorite thing about Rey apart from his incredible defense was how he swung like a power hitter but never hit more than 3 home runs in a season. Watching him take batting practice was like seeing delusion in action and I loved it.
Greatness shouldn’t be under appreciated. Sadly, that was the case for Rey who felt the fans didn’t fully acknowledge his wizardry. All because his bat wasn’t equal to his glove.
A statistic can easily capture a home run or RBI. But I have always wondered how can a statistic capture the kinds of things that Ray Ordonez and other great defensive players can do
He was the best since Ozzie. At his best ahead of Vizquel because of the stronger arm. Simmons is the best since all of them and may be Rey’s equal but I think Rey may have been more creative then them all. My sense is that if the Rey hadn’t gotten injured and the Mets hadn’t had to trade for Mike Bordick, they would have gone further and perhaps would have won the World Series. He was a lucky charm that way. He brought magic to that team. Special player who is missed by those who remember him. Should be missed by more. Too many didn’t see him or have forgotten him. Ozzie, Omar, Rey and Andrelton are in a class of their own. Anyone who says otherwise just doesn’t know what they are talking about. Not sure there’s a case for anyone else being on their level either.
It's too bad he got hurt in 2003 when he had his best offensive start by far going.. maybe he had finally learned to hit. Alas, we will never know as it effectively ended his career.
The only 2 shortstops in today's game I can think of that you can compare to Rey Ordonez are Andrelton Simmons & Jose Iglesias. Only difference between these guys is that Ordonez was a below average hitter. Iglesias can hit a bit. Simmons is the best hitter between these three guys.

Watched him since I was little all I remember was spectacular play after spectacular play was like a video game wish his bat could of been more active though.
I missed the entire Rey Ordonez era as I moved West and there was no streaming of audio or video. I would catch the occasional game on ESPN. What a fielder! Where are his hitting highlights?? Did he have any?

My favorite thing about Rey apart from his incredible defense was how he swung like a power hitter but never hit more than 3 home runs in a season. Watching him take batting practice was like seeing delusion in action and I loved it.
Not really much of a hitter but that’s okay. He contributed on another level defensively.

Greatness shouldn’t be under appreciated. Sadly, that was the case for Rey who felt the fans didn’t fully acknowledge his wizardry. All because his bat wasn’t equal to his glove.
A statistic can easily capture a home run or RBI. But I have always wondered how can a statistic capture the kinds of things that Ray Ordonez and other great defensive players can do

He was the best since Ozzie. At his best ahead of Vizquel because of the stronger arm. Simmons is the best since all of them and may be Rey’s equal but I think Rey may have been more creative then them all. My sense is that if the Rey hadn’t gotten injured and the Mets hadn’t had to trade for Mike Bordick, they would have gone further and perhaps would have won the World Series. He was a lucky charm that way. He brought magic to that team. Special player who is missed by those who remember him. Should be missed by more. Too many didn’t see him or have forgotten him. Ozzie, Omar, Rey and Andrelton are in a class of their own. Anyone who says otherwise just doesn’t know what they are talking about. Not sure there’s a case for anyone else being on their level either.
I think Vizquel had a better arm than Rey.
Where Rey left Vizguel in the dust was his quick release which was absolute insanity.
Rey Ordonez was a fantastic fielder. I think there was an older player named Ray Oyler that was an equally fantastic fielder that couldn't hit.
It's too bad he got hurt in 2003 when he had his best offensive start by far going.. maybe he had finally learned to hit. Alas, we will never know as it effectively ended his career.

The only 2 shortstops in today's game I can think of that you can compare to Rey Ordonez are Andrelton Simmons & Jose Iglesias. Only difference between these guys is that Ordonez was a below average hitter. Iglesias can hit a bit. Simmons is the best hitter between these three guys.
