I found the recipe that Vickie used and the title is "Baked Chicken and Peppers (aka Baked Chicken and Gravy)" from a website/blog called "The Dinner Bite".
To be fair, I used the words "Southern Baked Chicken Casserole", just as it is in the title of this video and this recipe came up in the results. There were quite a few dishes that came up, that were actually "casseroles" that used noodles, rice, macaroni, etc. Why she picked one that didn't say Southern or casserole in the title, if that's what she wanted, I can't explain. 4445$$
I also understand what you mean when you say that not all American food is Southern food. (and I grew up in the South!) It's not just the Beeselys who tend to think that way. There's a nice guy from Portugal here on RUclips, who also does reaction videos and he's also a big "Amerifile". He's been cooking and trying American food lately and quite a bit of what he's made, has been traditionally Southern... biscuits and sausage gravy, cornbread, chicken and dumplings, etc. I don't think he knows that the Northeast/New England region of the country even exists! LOL 🤷🏼‍♀️

Soul food in America has a specific meaning. I think you were meaning as food that's good for the soul, which is fine. American soul food is a specific group of foods that originated from African Americans in the south. There is also a style of music referred to as soul music. If it's a food that we grew up with, and brings back warm memories of our childhood, we refer to it as comfort food.

Looks delicious! If you’re a rice fan, you can put one to two inches of cooked rice at the bottom of the pan and then put the chicken mixture on top, the rice will absorb a lot of the chicken juice and flavors

Casserole here in Southern Appalachia is usually a throw together dish that uses whatever ingredients you have on hand. Normally we combine a protein, a veg or two, and some variety of cream based soup into a casserole dish (a baking dish 2" deep, 8"-9" wide, 11" long). Spice and season to taste. Bake for roughly 1/2 an hour. Some dishes go well with a cheese or crumb topping. The sky is the limit. There are no rules. If it turns out good, write the recipe down. If it doesn't, try something different until you get something good. The main point of casserole is fast and easy and good.

I found the recipe that Vickie used. It's not actually a casserole. The name of the dish is "Baked Chicken and Peppers AKA Baked Chicken and Gravy" It's from a blog called The Dinner Bite. I'm not sure that Brits really do casseroles, at least not in the sense that we do in the US. I wish there was some way to let Vickie know ahead of time, if she has the correct kind of recipe for what she plans to cook. This is just one of the dishes that she's made where she had the incorrect idea about what kind of dish she was preparing.
Her Carolina Crab Boil, for instance, wasn't even close to what it was supposed to be. I grew up in South Carolina and as I was watching the video, I was so confused! When it was completed, it turned out to be some kind of cold crab salad, which is as different from a crab boil as you could possibly get.
Trust me... It's not that I want to give her a hard time. She's a lovely woman and it's obvious that she's a great cook, who knows her way around British food. But if she hasn't got the correct idea and recipe for a particular type of "American dish", she and James and Millie aren't getting the actual food that they wanted to try in the first place. I just want them to get the most authentic experience that they can. 😊

I think you may have comfort food and soul food mixed together in one thought?
Comfort food can be anything to anyone that they like to tuck into to make them feel happy, cozy or nostalgic.
Soul food has a deep rich history of how foods were made in certain areas because of the limited ingredients.
You'll have to read about soul food to understand.

  • @JJVPYOU

The reason you found some many recipes is because a casserole is really, just throw whatever you find in your fridge and cook together. Is a great way to "get rid" of leftovers. And for James, it is Casserole, not cassarole.

Google "What is casserole in the UK?"
The following is the very first thing that comes up:
"In the UK, a casserole is a dish of meat and vegetables in a gravy-style sauce that's cooked in the oven"
You may want to look up the term "soul food" prior to saying that your British casserole is soul food from the southern United States.
The term soul food actually has great cultural significance in the South.

When I read the title and saw her preparing it. I said, _"she's making oven baked chicken, not a casserole."_

I think that's why some of us in the U.S were confused? It often seems they label things American but do UK versions? Which in respect doesn't make them American at all! I never even heard of this style but when she poured their brown gravy over the top (and i googled southern chicken casserole) I wasn't sure at all by that point? I agree there are tons of casseroles! I make a turkey casserole left over from Thanksgiving with brown gravy!...But a cayenne, chicken ( on the bone) with bell peppers over rice seems like they mixed Louisiana style over rice, instead of a one baked dish casserole then with brown gravy, ? Idk?
Then mixing comfort food with soul food? I never expect miss Vicki to be perfect! Every video however will never be authentic unless they atleast try (one time) an American true version recipe and can stick to their Britt ways after that! Just don't label it American.

US casseroles usually have a protein, one or more vegetables, and a starch like rice or noodles. They are often made with a cream soup base. They're often intended to be pretty much the whole meal.

Generally southern food does not have much spice but is comfort food and in fact has Scottish and English roots. (I also suspect the chopped onions were meant to be finely chopped) MOST southern chicken casseroles have the meat off the bones and somewhat shredded and the top of the casserole is breaded almost like a pie crust. Not something you stir afterwards. But I am sure what you made is very nice. I wish I could smell it!

  • @kencramer1697
    @kencramer1697 18 часов назад +5

There are many casserole's that got their start as a way to get rid of left overs. Some left over veggies, couple of pieces of left over chicken or ham, some stale bread etc. And when some one stumbled over a leftover casserole that they loved they would then recreate it from scratch. Many pot luck suppers at church, get well meals delivered to neighbors, funerals and other events these dishes were modified, and expanded up on until you have an entire ecosystem of casseroles.
I would challenge you to make a leftover casserole of your own. Cheese and condensed soups such as cream of chicken or cream of celery tend to be staples for the liquid in the casserole, but they are not a requirement. I would love to see what your imagination comes up with!

It could be called baked chicken in the US, but nothing about that would make it an "American Classic" or "authentic American" in any way. And a British casserole made in the UK is most definitely not "soul food" from the southern United States in any way, shape, or form.

When a recipe from the US list 'Bell Peppers' it is something completely different. I have made something similar to that.

nope. what she just used were exactly what Americans call "bell peppers". nothing different.

I looked a little closer and unlike what she used the first time, these could be real bell peppers. I will stand corrected for now because it is hard to tell.

No!!! Never on the bottom shelf always in the center it will burn to a crisp. American recipes are made for the center shelf only. The rack is movable.

It's better to use your hands. Was the recipe specific about the chicken? Normally they use boneless chicken for casserole, boneless skinless thighs or boneless skinless chicken breast 2hich we call cutlets. I do know in Australia cutlets of any kind mean on the bone. If it's an American recipe using cutlet it's always boneless chicken breast or boneless thighs.

I’m from Vermont, we had family size packages of boneless and skinless chicken breast for $2.99 a pound, I made a lot of different baked chicken dishes, the first one, I made chicken stew, second one, I cooked the chicken , the night before, put it in the refrigerator, the next day, I chopped the chicken, cooked a bag of egg noodles and added a can of cream of celery soup and mixed it all together and baked it until the Italian bread crumbs got crunchy.

Don't use onion salt or garlic salt the salt content is unreal and on top of the salt in it, the salt amount would make it unedible. Find garlic powder and onion powder

Not what I would call a casserole. I've never seen one with whole pieces of chicken in it. Most casserole have a pasta or rice and cream soup and cheese. But there are many ways of doing it.

Maybe you could do a meal from every state so you'll get to know our beautiful country from the top to the bottom not just the bottom. Okay. Well I love your videos. Hope you discover something from the north did you eat tuna fish casserole over there? It's pretty good ... Do y'all eat Italian food? Because you know there's a lot of Italian Americans over here ... Make some chicken parm Johnny marzetti tortellini Alfredo do you eat that stuff there?

As a southern woman I wouldn’t call this southern”. People all over would make this. Casseroles , which there are 100s of them in the US are made all over the country would make this. Casseroles are more associated with the Midwest. That is definitely not soul food. Soul food Iare things like fried pork chops, ox tails, chitlins and collard greens.
