Actually, the pain was very real! Unfortunately, John had a very bad sore throat for the recording of this album. His voice sounds normal on only Love Me Do, Please Please Me, and Ask Me Why, because those songs were recorded prior to the album. The rest of the album you can clearly hear John's sore throat, but he still sounds great.

His voice is definitely not 'one of the finest voices in rock & roll'.
Lennon a pretty standard 1950's rock voice.
Perhaps you are bias because of your love for this band and fond memories etc.
I'm pretty sure you can come up with tonnes of voices better than his.

I believe when this was recorded it was the time when George Martin had only recently met the Beatles and was trying to get an idea of their music. So he essentially had them record nearly every song they knew…or at least the ones they had been performing recently in all the clubs. So they literally recorded all their songs in one day, and there’s information out there that both Paul and John had terrible colds that particular day. You can tell by John’s voice on this song that it was absolutely hoarse and “shredded,” as John used to say. It really doesn’t even sound like John Lennon singing. And I never heard him sound like that the rest of his career.

    • @pocopico7409
      @pocopico7409 3 года назад +5

Charles Cuba: Yep, I always wondered if the songs on “Introducing The Beatles” were some of the last ones recorded that day because John’s voice (especially) sounds that way on many of the songs on that album (i.e., Baby It’s You, A Taste of Honey, Chains, There’s a Place, Anna, Twist and Shout). I’m sure all of their voices were dead tired, but John’s was noticeably different from the way it typically sounded on other albums. But now I’ve recently learned that both Paul and John had bad colds that day, and THAT was the main reason their voices sounded so different than at any other time.
As a side note, soon after the Beatles became popular in the USA in 1964, two albums appeared in the States at exactly the same time....at least in my city. The album most people got was “Meet The Beatles“. But they also released “Introducing The Beatles“ at the same time. I was just a young teenager and I remember pleading with my mother to let me and my sister get both albums. She gave in and got both of them for us and I always appreciated it.
The reason I wanted Introducing The Beatles was because I had heard Twist and Shout the day before on the radio and I thought it was absolutely the coolest song I had ever heard. I just couldn’t believe John’s voice when he sang it like that and I was just amazed. People just didn’t sing like that back then, or at least I had never heard anything like it. So I begged for that album mainly for just that one song! 😂
A lot of people never heard many of the songs on Introducing The Beatles because they weren’t played on the radio. But I did! And I remember listening to that album and wondering why their voices sounded different than on most other songs. It never occurred to me that it was mainly just John’s voice that sounded so different until years later. 😀

Wow! Fantastic! Nice to hear the other lads as well! I suppose they were in the same room, all singing at once, but they didn’t overlap- George and Paul in the background. One interesting thing I never heard before was the end. Did they overdub extra harmony on the last note or are George and Paul doing something new? The concluding harmony is pretty rich and has a depth that concludes the song, some Beatles are really emphasizing the /m/ as if humming, but it is extra and wasn’t there before, only appearing at the very end of the song. Any thoughts?

Another fine example of why John Lennon is the greatest rock vocalist in the history of recorded music.

Just brilliant. You can really hear the cold that John had during this day. It actually added to his raspiness especially on twist and shout.

This is one of my favorite Lennon songs. I took 4 hits of acid in a dark room a few years ago and listed to the Beatles (obviously) but this song stuck out. Made me weep thinking about John and his impact on music. How young he was recording it. It was a beautiful experience

John had such a vulnerability in his voice especially the early 60's Motown like You really got a hold on me, Mr. Postman and here Anna. John's talents seem more like the struggles and pain of Beethoven while Paul's comes from say like a Mozart free flowing fountain.

I love hearing the vocals separated out! There is a little anomaly in the background vocals at the chorus. George and Paul are doing the Aahhs and George keeps going just a little flat, then quickly corrects. I think he was going for the 'minor 4th' chord which doesn't arrive until later. Does anyone else here this? I'm surprised George Martin didn't have them do it over..

I've always thought John had a cold or something on this tune . His pitch sounds so different , almost doesn't sound like John even though I know it is .

Interesting how they didn't cut out extraneous background noises.

He sure had pain in his voice, he had a terrible cold when they recorded that first LP within 12 hours.
