    A little over 10 years ago we gutted our "new" house and started over. Because we had had parents with health issues, we decided to remodel as if one of us was in a wheelchair. Our bathroom and walk-in closet got 36" doorways. The tub came out and a shower built in. The sink cabinet made it easy for a wheelchair to butt up to, and the toilet is 17" high. 5 years later my good man was in a terrible accident requiring months in a wheelchair, then a walker, cane, and finally he could walk on his own. All the things we put in worked to our advantage but the most valuable were those grab bars in the shower. Now we're 10 years older and so glad we redesigned the bathroom to accommodate our "older" bodies because we'll be here a few more years than we originally thought and those ADA additions are nice.

      And a side note: I did put in a medicine cabinet in our walk-in closet for storage. Once I sent our daughter into the bedroom to get some headache medicine for her husband, telling her it was in the medicine cabinet. She looked all over and couldn't find it (besides not knowing what exactly it was). When I finally went in with her and opened the flush mount mirrored door she was amazed at the hidden storage! I guess modern homes don't have medicine cabinets built in to the bathrooms but ours is very handy and the "youth" don't know that there is something behind that mirror!

      That's funny about your daughter. It's true, most bathrooms now just have big mirrors. I guess the older houses were smaller and had to make storage anywhere they could.
      So sorry to hear about your 'good man's' accident, but yes, it was a blessing that you had already been prepared for that. We are extremely fortunate that the previous owners of the farmhouse had their mother living with them. They built an in-law suite on one end of the farmhouse on the first floor. When we bought the farmhouse, we planned that if/when we can't go up the stairs we can live totally on the first floor. In the in-law bathroom they installed a handi-capped ashower, high toiled with bar and wheelchair accessible sink. My mother lived with us a short while before she passed away and was able to use that area. Nobody knows what the future will hold, but it's always good to be prepared.

      It did go well and we were very thankful. We're just as anxious to see how it goes. 😬

    That looked like the cleanest demolition I've ever seen. So happy you didn't find any major issues!

      Just wait.....there is definitelyh more dirt coming. 😊 We also just ran into a few surprises during the next phase. Old houses always have their challenges.

      Not sure if it's talent or just being craze enough to try anything. Donny is quite handy and doesn't give up on stuff...that really helps. Sometimes we get in over our heads, but our son can often help us out.

      That would be our first option, but the tiny size of the bathroom is causing some complications with that option. 😔 With an old house there always has to be a plan A, B, C.......

  • @whitestone4401
    @whitestone4401 7 месяцев назад

    Great job on the demo. I would definitely go with a stand up shower. Low step in and room for storage. There are so many options now to tackle issues with renovations, it makes things much easier. Can’t wait to follow the progress.

    • @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764
      @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764  7 месяцев назад +1

      That's definitely our first choice, but we're running into a few snags. Might have to be a plan "B" or plan "C". With old houses there almost always has to be a back-up-plan. Thanks for watching!

    What fun and work. I would take out the tub for they make small showers. Make it your own and tiles can be very pretty. In one of our bathrooms we have a few chicken tiles.

    • @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764
      @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764  7 месяцев назад

      I love the idea of chicken tiles. Right now it's not looking good for a shower stall. We're looking into a bunch of options.

    take out tub, take the walls down to the studs. re-insulate and wiring. 3 foot shower, 2 foot closet and share with the bedroom with the nowear door

    • @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764
      @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764  7 месяцев назад

      Unfortunately we weren't able to go with our most desired option. The space between the wall and the door is only 30 inches and after searching for options, the only one was to build a custom shower. We weren't up for that so the tub had to stay. We came up with a great Plan B. I guess with old houses it pays to always be flexible when planning renovations. Also, as for wiring and plumbing, it was all in really good shape with modern wiring and plex plumbing. We lucked out in a lot of ways even though we couldn't go with our preferred plan.

    I’m a tub gal,,,though realize as we get older, showers are safer,,,but our old farmhouse has a clawfoot tub that our oldest son refinished for us and it turned out beautiful! I’ll see if I can share the link from Amazon,,,,did some research, and this is a great product!

    • @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764
      @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764  7 месяцев назад +1

      I was looking at clawfoot tubs, but the space in that bathroom between the wall and the door is just too small. Our options are very limited....probably going to have to keep the old tub and get it refinished. Maybe I can get a clawfoot tub in the slightly larger bathroom some day. A girl can dream.....😁

    Absolute silliness to have the hinge pins on the bathroom side of the door. How on earth would one be able to break in if anyone collapsed in the bathroom?

    • @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764
      @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764  7 месяцев назад +1

      Unfortunately, there's not enough room for a door to open into the hallway. It's very tight up there. There are so many things about old houses that limit options.

    Always enjoy you alls vid s, if I may suggest putting 3/4 stayrafom cut in stripes to fit between studs then R 19 , waterproof sheetrock and then do the rest.Great start for sure, you all work great as a team. God bless

    When you refinish the walls, I've seen people use a latex like paint that's supposed to help with waterproofing, then they put stuff on top of that. Not sure if that's helpful, but it might be something to look into.

    I know what I would do---clean it out down to the studs and start over! Keep the door from the bedroom and move it to the bathroom.

      I definitely want a door like that, but unfortunately the 'door to nowhere' is about twice the size of the bathroom opening. We've seen a few smaller solid old doors on facebook marketplace, but haven't settled on one yet. It's a really small/weird size. We've had some suggestions of local places that stock old doors, knobs and hinges. After the bathroom I am hoping to get rid of some of the 'new' doors. They just don't fit in a 180 year old farmhouse. Thanks for the suggestions. We try to explore all options.

    Close off the hallway entrance use the original entrance suit door?

    • @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764
      @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764  7 месяцев назад

      We thought about that, but there are 2 guest/spare bedrooms up there and the door in the hallway give both of them access. Thanks for the suggestion. We try to explore all options.

    Could you use the door that goes to nowhere for your new bathroom door?? 🚪🤷‍♀️🙌

    • @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764
      @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764  7 месяцев назад +1

      I wish that would work, but the 'door to nowhere' is even larger than the standard doors. It's about twice the size of the bathroom opening. We're finding some options on Facebook Marketplace. Hopefully one of them will work. It's such an unusual size that it's a challenge.

      We were really hoping we could do that, but with that space being SO small and tight, we're probably going to be keeping the tub. There just aren't any options that are easy enough for us to do ourselves. Plan B.....

    Can you bump the bathrooms into a neighbouring space?

    • @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764
      @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for the ide, but if we did it would either delete an entire bathroom or take away part of a bedroom. We like having the 'common' bathroom upstairs for guests and grandkids who spend the night. We've found a way to make it feel as spacious as a very old bathroom can be.

      He's fine. He has what is called Benign Essential Tremors. He has had it for the last 35 years and several members of his family have it as well. It's nothing scary, but can be very annoying when he's working on detailed projects. Thanks for noticing and for asking. ❤
