- Aldeyjarfoss is a legendary waterfall of Iceland and a favorite location of mine. This iconic waterfall drops into a pool of water surrounded by huge basalt columns. It is located in the northern parts of Iceland into the highlands and can be hard to find or get to. This only making it more interesting for landscape photography, as not all who goes to Iceland get to enjoy this special place. In this video I show how to get there and talk about the different compositions.

I´ve been watching your videos which serve me as prep for my upcoming Iceland trip in October and also got your map. Your work is simply impressive. Thanks for sharing your talent!
I always heard Iceland is beautiful and have seen some beautiful photos of it. Your photos and videos show that Iceland is such a magical place. Stunning is an understatement. Thanks for your hard work, it is very obvious.
No body will hear you scream... classic. Nobody hears me scream when I see your fabulous end images, Mads but that's another story :-) Great video, Mads, thank you.
You're so very welcome, Jon! And thanks a lot :)
I love the last image, the light is delightful and the water blurred just enough. Nobody will hear you scream? Oh, brother.....!
I was there last October and and when I was there I was the only one. I had the whole place to myself and I never encountered one person until I left. That's when a photography group tour showed up. The drive in was pretty good and I was able to make it up to the parking lot of the falls without issue. It was just a 5-10 minute walk down to the falls from there. The lady who ran the guesthouse I stayed at told me of a short cut to the falls which saved me about an hour of driving from where I was staying. What a great location. I plan on visiting this falls again in a couple of weeks from now.
Breathtaking photography and location. Thank you so much for this wonderful vlog!
The aurora image at the waterfall is epic.
This is one of our favourtie waterfalls in Iceland, been there month ago, stunning and breathtaking. :)
I'm so fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit this magnificent place - thanks for bringing me back!
You're much welcome! 😁
Your suggestion to wear good foot ware can’t be stressed more. Conditions plus very sharp volcanic rock will make short order of street shoes. I wish I had known of you before I gone there the first time......your final shots are amazing!
Just when I was getting my breath back from the fantastic aerial shots, your images then sucked it away again. Had to rewind and watch these again as there was something really special about these Mads. I hope you have an exhibition one day as I would dearly love to see your images on a gallery wall as like all your images from Iceland there is something special about how you capture this truly breath taking country
I would absolutely love to see my images displayed side by side in a big gallery! Would be so cool! 😁
Totally agree that this is one of the best waterfalls to photograph especially as it is not overrun yet with tourists, therefore you are more likely to get a good composition
1-3-5 have my vote ... those are magnificent photos ... breathtaking. 👍👍👍
Oh my god so beautiful landscape amazing job and photos
I just found your channel today, I have watched two videos so far. I early enjoy it.
Welcome aboard :)
Wonderful video Mads, loved the image with rock framing the waterfall👍🏻
My favorites is the Northern Lights photo !
And ... another great video Mads! Although al photo’s are beautiful, i think the portrait is special.
Thanks a lot. It's also a favorite of mine :)
I really do enjoy your videos Mads, very inspiring thanks so much for sharing.
Absolutely stunning Mads , superb !!!
Superb video Mads and your images are stunning, I see what you mean about capturing the rings of water at the bottom of the falls , it takes the image to a whole new level.
Such unbelievably gorgeous images!
Fabulous video and photography. I will not be able to go to the falls when I visit in May 2019. Thanks for this spectacular video. It’s like being there, soaking in the breathtaking sight.
Stunning.
Thank you for all the technical Information about your photos. Very helpfull.
Stunning images as always.
Awesome vid Mads, as usual with an equally awesome set of images.
Great photos from Aldeyjarfoss..Thanks for great video Mads 👍
Another amazing video Mads , your final images were just breathtaking
You knowledge of getting to and from unique locations is unparalleled. Thanks for sharing.
Astonishing images, Mads. Seriously amazing work right here.
Thank you so much! 🙏
OMG, “...no one can hear you scream!” Lol! Congratulations on 40 episodes! Best landscape vlogger without a doubt.
I wish I could live there for long time... Maybe next year I'll come 2 weeks over there! Thanks for your videos.
what a great video, loved following you on your adventure!
thanks for sharing so much great content with us
always a pleasure to watch great videos like this!
Thanks, Mads! Some truly stunning shots. Inspiring to watch!
Another epic video Mads, the last image is my favourite
I beleive these are the most beautiful photos i have seen from you!!

Amazing guide!
Great vlog again mads and very informative
Epic work Mads.
Thanks for sharing Mads,
All the best.
Amazing place
Stunning images Mads
stunning images... loved the vid... loads of helpful info as always
Stunning video and images Mads. I tried to get to this waterfall last year but the roads were impassable with heavy snow and ice. Guess I'll have to come back in the summer!
Stunning location and 'off the scale' images!
Hi Mads. What a great location ! Definitely worth the 3km hike in at any time of year. You've captured fantastic images there and the final image is stunning. Thank you for sharing this beautiful video.
Thanks a lot, Tim! :)
Awesome video, thanks for sharing more great info!
Awesome vlog mads, beautifull place and you captured it brilliantly, stunning images and superbley narrated
Every time I watch your video I can't wait when you show your pictures. Photos from this episode are jaw dropping! Keep up the great work :D
Another informative well put together video ! Keep them coming :D
A really beautifully created film Mads, with stunning images to go with it. How on earth three people can give a thumbs down to your dedication to bring this much detail to your viewers defies belief! Who are these people?
Thank you very much, Simon! Very happy to hear that. And I don't know who they are. Don't know why they even bother :p
Simply super. Great and inspirational video. I will start my journey to Aldeyjarfoss this morning, it's December 7th and it has snowed the last days. So let's see how it works out. Thanks again!
How did it go ? I'm planning to check it out next weekend for the first time and it's forecasting snow. I'll have a 4wd but to be safe I think I'll hike the 3 km
Haukur Sverrisson Haukur Sverrisson Hi, I made it two days ago with my 4WD to the final parking lot at Aldeyjarfoss. There was no bigger issue at all, especially no ice on the final part before the parking lot. Now, it started to snow again and more snow is forecasted so this road condition might change over the next days. I think the tricky parts will be the up and downs on this F26 road, you better check and worst case park your car and walk the final part.
This amazing way of showing Iceland is almost an “can-not-refuse” invitation👌
I enjoyed watching this breathtaking video. Thanks for sharing Mads
How on earth do you pick a favourite from all those amazing images?! What a location! Great work Mads.
Excellent work. Well done!..
Great video and awesome shots :)
I always love how many unique compositions you are able to pull out of one location/subject. Didn’t know about this place when I visited Godafoss but will certainly be making the trek next time! Awesome video as usual Mads!
Thanks as always, Seth! When did you last visit?
Great video and beautiful images !!
Excellent video as always, Mads. Really like the first of the selection of images you showed because of how you positioned the foreground cliff to frame the water. The drone footage over the waterfall is also out of this world.
Wonderful images Mads.
Les deux dernières sont magiques. Si je n'étais pas si nul en anglais, je crois que j'adorerais faire un de tes workshops en Islande.
Spectacular location Mads, I very much respect and appreciate your dedication in showing us these places. Sound advice on the safety aspects too. No photo is worth risking your life, but some folk do. Living to shoot another day is much better!
Amazing, I love it, hope to travel there one day, Tak, Yes it is Breathtaking
A fantastic waterfall, a great video and some amazing images. Thanks Mads. I went to Aldeyjarfoss last summer and am in total agreement with you about how good it is.
Wow Mads, those are some stunning images that you were able to capture! I find it amazing that you just keep pushing the boundaries and limits of your craft, for that I thank you! What was also amazing, those long exposure drone aerials they were over the top, outstanding! Totally Awesome Sir, Well Done!
Aldeyjarfoss is one of hundreds of wonderful waterfalls in Iceland, tho it's one of few I haven't seen yet due to its location near the highlands at the F road. But it's definetely on my bucket list when I return to iceland in some years. I can honestly understand why it's hard for you to describe in words how the waterfalls make you feel because every waterfall look completely different to others. Would you actually mind ranking the waterfalls of their beauty? I don't believe so xD because everyone has his or her own favorite of the many many beautiful waterfalls in ICELAND. We just have to continue and continue sayin AMAZING or GORGEOUS to the icelandic foss because they're all simply breathtaking when you witness the waterfall's energy and power when you stand in front of them. Keep going Mads!
Haha! You're so right. I have actually thought about making a top 5 or 10 video on my favorite waterfalls of Iceland :)
What a wonderful location, Mads. I found your explanation of setting focus most useful and your last image was breathtaking! I certainly preferred your last few images where there was more texture in the flowing water. Thank you, looking forward to your next video.
You're much welcome, Tony! And thanks a lot :)
Excellent!
Beautiful.:)

The grandeur of it is immense. The people look like ants, i love your videos for this reason .
Thank you, Gabrielle! It is actually quite a big one :)
Cool location, Mads! I'll have tpo put Iceland down on the bucket list. Cheers!
Thanks a lot, Adam! Yes, Iceland is a wonderful country! Would love to see what you'll get out of it :)
Your list is getting bigger than most bank accounts Adam :-D
Haha, very much so, It's good to dream though, haha.
Greatttt
Very interesting and beautiful waterfalls and great vlog Mads. I really like your shots of the waterfalls and it does look a little challenging. You have been in Iceland now for some time, I bet you could use common law and became a citizen or resident 😄
That was amazing. I have only just finished editing my trip to Iceland. Unfortunately, it was only a tourist trip. I would love to get back there and photograph it properly. Great video and great shots.
Thanks a lot, Mark! I think you should go then :)
Absolutely wonderful vlog mags. Loving this series and I’m heading to Iceland in a few weeks and want to visit this amazing waterfall. Has anyone notices the snow patch to the left of the waterfall is shaped almost exactly like Iceland 🇮🇸🧐😉
Holy shit, what excellent photos. Oh, miss the Icelandic atmosphere sooooo. At some point I fly back to Iceland with a camera and hopefully hold very nice photos and moments.I will show them later to my successors and I hope I inspire them to come to Iceland and take a look at nature.
I Hope you have a Nice day, see you later and I wait for the next Video. Bye✌
Hehe thanks a lot :)
Thank you. :)
It is very tempting to attempt such an
incredible journey in winter. But I would leave it till summer time where the ground is more favourable although nothing is guarenteed weather wise.I think photo adventure seekers need to balance effort with reward.I wish Mads Peter to do a itinerary for beginners
Intermediate and advanced photographers to capture Iceland and Lofoton.Nevertheless Peter you are a great adventureer I have ever seen.best wishes.
Wicked images mate!!! Showed my partner and she asked when are we going? 😄 Those workshops look incredible but to be fair I would rather do one of yours. On the list.
Thanks a lot, Christopher! It's just about get going ;)
I N C R E D I B L E !
Love your videos Mads. But sometimes I feel like the long exposures of moving water are over done so I particularly like the images that show the concentric rings although the outreaching “rays” in the longer exposures are also intriguing. Your descriptions and camera technique suggestions are welcome. Thanks for another epic video and the opportunity to live vicariously through your travels.
You don’t need a mirrorless to preview the dof, on a DSLR there’s a dof preview button, on a canon next to the lens.
Loved the video, as always
Great video and the end photos, I am lost for words and my daughter said the waterfall in the end photos looks like Elsa in frozen and now when i look at the photos, I see Elsa too, I thought I had seen the last of frozen.
Haha, that's funny! :D
Once again Mads, a fantastic video and a great excuse to go back to Iceland, not that I need an excuse!
One question I do have though Mads, about the stills you see how at the end of all your videos..... How do you create the effect of movement through the still image and then pull out to show the whole image? I love that effect
Thanks, I just use premiere pro. Zoom in and change the position of the photo over time :)
Wonderfull, just wonderfull and here is the comment, Keep it Up - are you also in Denmark sometime or only Iceland?
Thanks a lot, Dave ;)
Yes, I'm actually mostly in Denmark. I just spend my time editing videos and photos while I'm home instead of actually taking photos. Not really something I planned for but that's how the past couple of years have turned out :p
Sp, so amazing! We're planning on going there next April if the weather allows it. We're also planning on parking our car and then just hike there if the snow is not too deep. Did you just follow the F road by foot or is there a different path? Thanks so much and keep up the fabulous work!
I have printed my own calendar for friends with 12 waterfalls of Iceland - summer and winter as well, but this one is really missing! It’s now on the list for my next visit. By the way l like the first picture of the series at the end most, it differs from the ones you see quite often.
Thanks a lot, Stefan :)
I will be just a few days... then I will do the South and the peninsula... I hope I have time for it... but I am SERIOUSLY considering to drive all night to have the opportunity to get this one in my SIM card
Really an inspiration for me!! Well done! What camera you are using for vlogging?
It differs. In this one I used the Rx100m4. Now I use the Ozmo Pocket
In August I stand at the Godafoss with 200-300 visitors all arround. One hour later I was at the Aldeyjarfoss - I was alone - in this touristic summer. I know this waterfall twice in Winter, many often in summer. I have some good pictures - but not so good as yours. Thank you for your tipps ( 0,8 sec and so on ). Do you know the next waterfall two kilometers south? (something with goat. hafra.xy.foss) Also special! Your droneflights are super. Mads, thank you for your channel.
Thanks, Otto! Yes I know that waterfall been there a few times :)
Hi Mads, i'm about to travel to Iceland. one question, i though it was ilegal go to a F road without a 4x4 car. i will have a similar car as that white one that you shown. Can i do this type of thing without to much worries?
so you stitch different pictures at different times in order to pick out the ones with different radius rings? is that right?
i went here last year but only made it to the gate. past the gate the mud was too much even for my groups 4x4 cars to handle so we just turned around.
Hi, did you went there during October? seems really windy.. I'm going in OCT and I heard it gets really rainy ... also I've seing there's a hot spring by Aldeyjarfos how long is the hiking from the parking lot to the waterfall?
I was there in October yes, the thing about the Icelandic weather is you can't predict it. You might have heard it was rainy, but I've been there in October both during a blizzard but also on a clear day.
Never heard about any hot springs at Aldeyjarfoss. Do you mean Myvatn nature baths?
And it depends on what parking lot you mean? Did you see the video?
How much time does it cost to get from Goafoss to the Aldeyjarfoss waterfall?
Wow, what a location. I know everyone has their own interpretation of how an image should look, but from a personal perspective I am not a fan of using a slow shutter speed when shooting waterfalls or the ocean.
Why? Because the sheer power of the water is lost. Milky smooth water does not show that power.
Your images though, Mads are still amazing. Thank you.
