SUUNTO D5 | NEW Dive Computer REVIEW & VLOG | "User Test & Conclusion" in Philippines

  • Following our trip to Nemo 33 for the launch of the Suunto D5, we were lucky enough to take one of the pre-production units with us to the Philippines to try while we were staying at Magic Oceans in Bohol.
    The Suunto D5 is the latest dive computer from Suunto, and packs the same menu functions that can be found on the EON Core and EON Steel, but in a unit slightly bigger than their mainstream units such as the D4 & D6.
    The main draw about the D5 is that this unit is a wearable watch, combined with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, making this a cross between an EON Core and a D6 in our own opinion, but with a whole host of cool new features!
    The Suunto D5 comes in 4 main options:
    - Black Body/Black Strap
    - Black Body/Lime Strap
    - White Body/White Strap
    - White Body/Black Strap
    The white options have the silver bezel on the face.
    Weighing in at 90g, and with a depth rating of 100m the D5 will appeal to the recreational diver.
    It will take tank pressure readings from 3 pods, and allows the user to customize the unit and perform software updates themselves, and has 18 language options.
    The D5 differs from other models in the Suunto range because it has the option for interchangeable coloured straps (sold separately).
    User-friendly and quick to remove, the straps can easily be changed for a number of options in the range, including longer straps for dry-suits, NATO style material dive straps, and even leather straps to allow you to wear the D5 as a fully functioning watch when not in the water to give it a different look and feel. We really really loved this feature!
    Another big positive is the new algorithm. Suunto has released the FUSED 2 RGBM Decompression Model in the D5, in a bid to improve the dive experience of the user.
    This is a huge step forward, and will definitely make this a popular dive computer/watch.
    The difference in 'no decompression limits' was significantly noticeable, and will make a huge difference to divers using this product!
    The Suunto D5 is available now for pre-order from www.mikesdivestore.com and will be available for general sale from March 11th 2019, which is the expected launch date.
    Would love to hear in the comments below what you think of the Suunto D5? Did you see it at the recent dives shows across Europe? What were your thoughts?
    Has anyone pre-ordered/purchased - if so which option did you go for??
    Music in this video was sourced from Epidemic Sound
    Parallax by Luwaks
    (Apologies for the random camera focussing issues - literally no idea what happened there as never had the issue before?!)

    Great review as always. Just bought a D5 to replace Eon Steel to pair with Tank Pod. Very easy navigation vs D6i. I like the recharging capability. When I dove in January in Mexico, all the cool kids (tech divers) were using watch computers for our recreational dives. Looking forward to diving it with Nitrox!

      This watch is for beginner/intermediate recreational diver and it is priced accordingly. This product should never be compared to Garmin Descent or Shearwater Teric which are an entirely different league, targeted to advanced users, and come at many times the cost of the D5.

    I am a big fan of Suunto watches and also use the Suunto Sports watches and the D4 for diving more than 12 years. But there's a BUT: Having this kind of "modern" watches for diving means again more stress of charging every day in the evening. When you take the D4, you put a battery inside and dive for month... perhaps up to 2 years. In the end the D5 is a modern dive watch on the next evolution level, can synchronize with an app, but your dive is not getting better with it, but it can happen very fast on a dive safari, that you charged the watch day before yesterday... forgot to charge yesterday evening before going to bed... now you jump in the water... but next dive watch is perhaps empty. Sure - a bit of thinking and it won't happen. But with a good old D4 I never had to think about things like this.

I have the air integration pod that I love or I might have pursued returning this dive watch for this reason and the fact that is really only last for 3 dives so is a nightly charge.

      It's a really good point - especially when you consider Suunto lead the way in lots of fitness tech above the water. My hunch - and this is a hunch, that their next serious offer of a dive computer will be along the lines of the Descent Mk2.
      It needs to be really to keep up with the competition!!

  • @sierradelta8920
    @sierradelta8920 5 лет назад +1

    How would you compare it to the D6i novo Zulu? I almost bit the bullet on one, then our video popped up on my feed! Now I’m bloody torn and can’t decide!!!!

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  5 лет назад

      This is a great question Sierra Delta. The biggest change for me is the D5 comes with the EON menu system which is much simpler to use than the standard Suunto menus. Also the screen on the D5 comes with a full colour MIP display which is far greater than the D6i. It's much clearer to read and more pleasing on the eye.
      Also the strap option on the D5 (for me anyway) is a great draw and one of the reasons I want to go D5. Love the customisable aspect of it. The battery in the D5 is rechargeable whereas the D6i isn't. Whist you will get a long period of use before it needs changing, you will still need to send the D6i for a battery change etc.
      Finally - the D5 comes with the FUSED 2 RGBM algorithm which in my honest opinion is much closer to the Buhlmann than anything else out there. This alone makes the D5 the superior unit.
      If you're asking advice on where to go for the D6i or the D5, then my money all day long is on the D5.
      I will be replacing my old Viper Air with a D5 and Hayley is replacing her D6i with a D5 when we come to renew later in the year.
      Hope that helps?

      Black Manta Photography oh man now your just making my decision even harder hahahahahaha!

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  5 лет назад

      @@sierradelta8920 But it's so easy to charge with the USB adaptor. You can charge anywhere at any time!

      Black Manta Photography what’s the charge time for the watch to be full again?

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  5 лет назад +1

      Sierra Delta that’s going to depend on how much charge is in the watch to start with. In my experience with the pre production model it was taking a 2/3 hours to charge from empty, but was generally leaving it plugged in over night while I slept.

    Bought a D5 recently. No information about how the watch will perform under water. No guide to use when diving. I'm expected to figure out the diving interface while on a dive? Thanks Suunto, for omitting any sign of a user guide. This vLog could really be cut down in length, its nearly 02:30 in before we even see the product. And seriously, straps being the best feature? I have to say while the buckle looks sturdy the pins holding the strap to the face do not inspire confidence. My key concern is this feature increases risk of product loss.

      King Blaster seems to be the design for many new DC’s these days. Far more power being used for the varying brightness levels, more detail in the logs - very similar to the EON range. Different displays, with this being mineral crystal, and much bigger screen. The batteries now are non replaceable but will probably last you 10 years before you need to replace.

      Suunto definitely lost my interest. No GPS and adding other features when you do a multi purpose vacation such as hiking etc. Garmin definitely nailed it with the Decent MK1 except the AI missing. Also the pins on the strap on the D5 look very flimsy. Battery life seems also disappointing compared to other smart watches on the market. If they would do a hybrid watch like a Suunto 9 and the D5 that would have been a winner. I don’t want to take multiple watches on holiday. Also no smartphone integration except log upload.
