A great comparison review. Thank you for taking the time to do this. A key issue you didn’t cover is the long term ownership of the sealed battery unit. Shearwater suggest a 5 year battery change which their dealers can do. Shearwater offer a 2 year warranty but Suunto warranty provides 5 years coverage for the pressure sensor which might help people like me decide having had 3 Suuntos fail all with faulty pressure sensors. In short please add in warranty coverage and battery change as after 300 to 500 charge cycles will mean a reduced capacity battery.

Nice review Rich. To add to the D5 comments, I used it on lowest brightness settings in Cuba recently. It was good for a 4 dive day but needed to be recharged overnight. It would have been a stretch for anything more than 4 (it locks you out of dive mode at 20%).

Thanks Jon - much appreciated. I suspected that on lowest brightness settings you've get a full day of diving comfortably. I'm interested in the comment George left earlier today in that he gets around 4 to 5 days of teaching 3 dives a day out of one charge with his D5. I was starting to thing that maybe I had a defective battery if that's the normal battery charge span. Would be interested if any other users out there could share what battery life they get from their D5 and on what brightness setting they use?

Thanks for this great review! It would have saved me much time a few months ago while I was struggling to chose between the MK1 and the Teric. I finally bought the Teric and I'm very happy with it. I made this choice because I already have a smartwatch in the daily life and then I decided to focus on the dive computer. The absence of air integration on the MK1 was a big issue and after reading a lot of comments on forums I was although not confident with the liability of this computer and the Garmin service which is said to be almost inexistant for this watch.

Hi Sin, thanks for the lovely comment - much appreciated. You know it's funny - before I actually went diving with these 4 DC's I totally loved the Descent. Loved the functionality, and all the features, but as soon as I got it in the water, and up against the D5 and Teric it just seemed inferior. As we've both pointed out the missing AI is a real issue in this day and age, and the screen for me was way too small. It does have some cool features on how you can flip the screen with a shake of the wrist to see different values, but at the end of the day a lot of the smartwatch capabilities just became gimmicky. GPS maps was cool, but too small to really appreciate it, and in all honesty something I'd never use.
Good choice on the Teric - totally fell in love with this, and 100% want one of my own now!

Clear and comprehensive where you can at last actually see the screens on an actual dive, as compared to some so called hands-on tests where they keep wiggling the DC from a nice and dry studio showing photographs of the product that you can find anywhere on the internet and reading the instruction manual on the clip.

It's hard to be non-subjective when trying to do a fair comparison, but there is huge value in realising you need the right tool for the job you're going to do. If you're just going to dive recreationally then the D5 is perfect, and at half the cost, I'd put the saving into actually going diving!

Fantastic review, thanks so much for posting this! A couple of key comments I would add. I would take into consideration whether the dive computer has a mineral or a sapphire crystal screen. For me, it's a disgrace that any dive computer comes with a mineral crystal, as it scratches very easily. Many cheap watches (timepieces) have sapphire screens, so there is no good reason why a dive computers at this price point should not. The second point is that if you are going to rank the computers based on extra-cost strap options, then it would have been fairer to the Ratio to mention that it has various different extra-cost add-ons that none of the others have, e.g. oxygen analyser, multiple wireless transmitters, tech capability upgrade.

    Great review:
I dive the Teric and think it's fab... but I use it for TEC backing up a Petrel. I dived a Suunto D6 for many years recreationally. A point worth making is maybe about the algorithms used. The Teric with its Buhlman algorithm with Gradient Factors is very adaptable to whatever type of diving you are doing. Buhlman is a recognised and well-documented Algorithm. The Teric can also quickly be switched between a recreation mode with NDL and a more aggressive algorithm to TEC mode.
The Suunto (as great as it is) is using an undocumented algorithm. I'm not trying to suggest this is bad and I will even say, that Suunto has a massive market share and this algorithm is well and truly tested. I would also suggest that unless you have a good understanding of Gradient Factors, a computer as adaptable as the Teric could get you into a lot of trouble!? Keep up the good work.

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  5 лет назад +1

Thanks Graham, and a really good point you raise. The aim for this review for me was to highlight some of the basics that these computers offer, and it's fair to say that this was aimed towards the recreational market, as this must make up 95% of the scuba market. I know a lot of recreational divers that have DC's with GF based algorithms, yet use them in default settings that come as standard. Delving into this on the review would have made it even longer than it already is.
Great shout about the Suunto, but what I would say here is that Suunto have really pulled it out of the bag with their new RGBM Fused 2 model. They received a lot of flack over the years on the restricted NDL's, which are vastly improved with this new offering, and will certainly give the Buhlmann a run for its money!
Thanks for taking the time to leave a detail and thought through comment - very much appreciated!!

I followed your advice and spent some time watching this review today after watching your newer video.
You picked the four best dive computers in the market - perhaps I would had added the Cosmiq dive computer in the mix to see how it ranked against the other 4 - the Cosmiq is inexpensive but it offers a surprinsingly robust variety of features.
Interestingly you left out what used to be the old legacy brands of dive computers that ruled the market a quarter century ago -computers made by brands such as Scubapro, Aqualung, Oceanic, Mares, and Cressi, that are now "old tech" when compared to the models you picked - and I personally agree with your decision to leave them out because they are simply not as good as the ones you picked.
I guess my only critique would be that when you stated "at the end of the day these are just dive computers" it sounded like you may have missed the point Garmin is trying to make with its new MK1 Descent dive computer: this device is far more than just a dive computer.
The Garmin MK1 Descent has all the features of a 21st century dive computer imbedded in a life manager device that offers a formidable array of non-diving features that the other three models included in your study can't even come close to - they are galaxies below the MK1 Descent
The end customer could spend around $1K USD buying any of the other 3 dive computers and they would get a top-noch dive computer, or they could spend around $1K USD buying a Garmin MK1 Descent life manager computer that has so many features to aid your every day life, and on top of all that it has an outstanding dive computer product that exceeds the expectation when compared to most other dive computers in today's market.
I can see that the Teric dive computer has a better display than the Descent dive computer, but quite honestly that's about the only advantage I see the Teric having over the MK1 Descent, with the Descent having many more value features than the Teric does - step counter, heart rate monitor, quality of sleep monitor, altimeter, barometer, GPS, mapping, etc etc.
Now that Garmin is in the SCUBA market (since 2017) it wouldn't be surprising to see several computer brands folding and other SCUBA brands investing heavily in renovating their computer technologies to compete against the true technology leader in this product category - Garmin.

Mauricio Muñoz firstly, Merry Christmas. I’m not sure where you are in the world, but it’s just after midnight here in the UK and I’m yet to see Santa fly across the sky..!
The DC’s in this review video were chosen because I had so many people ask me how the Suunto D5 compared to the Teric and the Descent. I asked for some loan units for the review and they through in the iDive with it.
Scubapro and Aqualung are still making some serious units - I reviewed the Aqualung i770R last year, and have just returned from a trip reviewing the Galileo HUD from Scubapro - should hopefully have that review up in the next week or so.
There really is just so much on the market for scuba divers these days!
I couldn’t agree more with you - the Descent really is unique in its full capabilities as a life manager watch. As I say in the video, the categories I tested on were the ones in my head I could think of that were most important to me as a diver. Things like battery life, screen brightness etc etc.
The Descent performed well against all others as a dive computer, but as a smart life manager watch beats them all day long.
What would be an interesting review, and something I will look into doing, is comparing the Mk2 against other life manager devices when it is released.
I’ll also look into getting a Cosmiq for future videos. I’m not familiar with it, but will do what I can to add it into the mix for sure. 🤿

I agree Teric is the better technical computer and I own one. But as a dive computer Ratio also has a mangetometer for detecting shipwrecks and also works as a oxygen analyser (Nitrox). I think these two are important to mention in the extras.
What separates Teric or any Shearwater Research computer for me is live display of Surface GF and GF 99. I don't know why other computers aren't showing your Surface Gradient Factor (the amount of tissue saturation you would have if you surface at that point of the dive). This information makes dives a lot more controlled and you start understanding GF low and GF high values are lot more as you dive. I don't think I want to do any technical dive without having access to this information anymore.

Was your side by side NDL test over repetitive dives? I've found that the Suunto algorithm gives longer NDL on the first dive of a series vs a Teric on medium conservatism, but during repetitive dives the Suunto RGBM algorithm results in a much lower NDL times. In one case my Teric wasn't in deco while my Cobra 3 had 15 minutes of deco.

I understand it has great Tec features that are not needed for Rec. and not at that level yet but not ruling tec out for the future. I can't really agree with suggesting the D5 at all, as it's basically just a D4 with a color screen and terrible battery life for 100€ more.
On the other hand I prefer the Descend over the Teric due to all the "smart/fitness watch" features over Teric. The software of the Teric is just too basic in my mind as you can't adjust much in the settings, but it is definitely better suited to Tec diving than the Descend. It also has a better screen as well as Air Integration (never used it so used to simple SPG).
So my suggestion for Watch style Dive Computers is:
    entry-level: D4 (maybe used)
    scuba and tec only: Teric
everyday smart/fitness watch with diving capability: Descent

    • @BlackMantaPhotography
      @BlackMantaPhotography  4 года назад +1

Hi mik3ydll - thanks for the comment.
Let me explain my conclusion around this:
100% agree regarding your comment about the D5 battery, although I do think the D5 offers more than the D4 - not mentioning the new Fused 2 RGBM algorithm. A huge step up.
Remember, I'm comparing just these 4 watches as DC's only - I do reference that if you want a dive computer that does step count, fitness, GPS, music etc, then the Descent is absolutely the right choice - but as a dive computer I found it too busy.
Whilst AI is a relatively recent addition to DC's (I spent the first 10 years of my diving with my trusty SPG), it is absolutely commonplace now, and surprising for a DC that costs around £1000 not to have that function - give it a go, you'll be so surprised how great it is! When you consider what the Descent packs, you would think AI would be a simple obvious inclusion, and when I'm diving I want a large uncluttered screen which I found the Descent lacked - by hey, that's just my opinion.
As a DC, the Teric is miles ahead for me, plenty of customization, and certainly wouldn't suggest the Teric software is basic - not by a long shot.
I agree with most of your summary - if you're looking for an entry-level watch/DC then I'd look at the Suunto D4i - the latest model release looks fantastic, or the Oceanic Geo 4.0 (review on this landing on Sunday night) - great little computer and it's only £320.
Out of the 4 I'm reviewing in this video then the D5 is your best entry-level option.
The Teric is hands down the option for all types of scuba and CCR.
Garmin great if you do need a DC that doubles up as a fitness watch as it's the only one of the 4 being reviewed that could meet these demands.
But love a good debate, and always welcome peoples views. The world would be dead boring if we all thought the same.
What is your primary DC? Do you dive with a secondary back up unit at all?
      Cheers!!

Price of each DC should have been more a consideration than different coloured straps. Also the price of some of the Garmin straps is crazy so should have lost it points.
Next you do not mention how the Ratio iDive easy can be software upgraded the the Deep and to the Tec making it grow with the diver.
For me from my own research and this video Teric 1st, D5 might just edge the ratio but it would be close especially if a diver knows they will go into tec/deco diving later so possibly joint 2nd. The Garmin looses out more because of purchase price plus the lack of having the option to add pods for air integration later.
