Alright I took the MK2i diving today. I am a complete newb when it comes to diving. I ordered this Wednesday which was also the day I was doing my last two certification dives. Today was my first day of just diving and first time I've ever used a dive computer. I got it Thursday and took it to the gym and started it getting set up the way I like it. Charged it to 100% and took it to gym Friday and went over the instructions for the diving part and got all the diving set up. Recorded my 11 mile mountain bike ride with it on Saturday. The whole thing seemed overwhelming when I first got it but once I got used to navigating using the buttons and got the menus organized the way I want it was easy. Did a 20 minute 20 foot dive today focusing on buoyancy practice and getting to know this device. Surfaced and then did a 10 minute 45 foot dive just checking things out underwater. I wear 1.5x readers and found the screen easy to see at 80% backlight but am turning it up to 100% from now on. It gives the option to turn off the up scroll button but I found myself using it more so am leaving it on and used both the up a down to navigate the menu while diving. Since I am so new to diving I don't know what else to say other than I found it very easy to use and I am looking forward to getting the transmitter. I love all the details this thing gives me for all my activities and I feel like I have only scratched the surface. Whats most impressive is after all this activity and playing with the watch quite a bit it still stays it has 12 days of battery time left off that one charge. The only thing I would change is make it touch screen so I don't have to use buttons to navigate. In sum: if you want to dive to the Titanic in the morning and summit Everest in the afternoon with a stop at the gym in between then this watch has you covered.
Wow!! Thank you for the very detail and comprehensive comment on your first few days with the Descent Mk2. Great to hear from a user that has found it easy to use, and as you say, the depth of what it covers is just extraordinary! Good luck with all of your scuba, and hope you continue to enjoy it as much as we do..!!!
@@BlackMantaPhotography The only downside of this review is that now I'm even more anxious to play with it when I will receive it. I love your enthousiasm mate. I think even my 90 year old aunt will buy one by just looking at your review ;-)
@@Vering Hahahaha...! Honestly, hand on heart the Mk2 is phenomenal...! The enthusiasm is 100% genuine. Completely loved the Mk1 but the Mk2 is literally something else! Would love to hear what you think once you've had a play!
@@BlackMantaPhotography I'll be sure to leave a message here, but since I only dive in crystal clear warm water, and I'm in Holland, I won't be able to tell you my dive experience any time soon. I'll be using it for running and all the other cool stuff on there for the time being.
@@Vering and that's just perfect - I would be really interested to hear how you have found all the incredible options, and things like the VO2 max and Pulse Oximeter...
Hi Mate, really great video as always... Im expecting very exciting the video between Shearwater Teric and the MK2i.... that will be a great review that all divers will appreciate. Im impatient...thanks a lot
Thanks for the reviews. I've been shopping for a new smart watch because I do a bunch of outdoor activities and just started diving so the MK1 was appealing so as not to have separate devices. I wear reading glasses so didn't purchase yet due to your comments on the size. I actually had my last two open water cert and Nitrox dives scheduled for today. I opened the computer to read the news with my morning coffee before I left for the dives and a notice for this review showed up. Watched it and ordered the MK2i. Pricey indeed but I figured buy once, cry once. It should be here by Friday and I am going mountain biking Sat and diving Sun so will be able to put it through its paces this weekend. Thanks again for the reviews.
Wow - I like your style!! Like it - buy it - get over the price! Great attitude! Awesome weekend lined up then... would absolutely love to hear how you get on with it over your full on weekend of activities!!
Just ordered mine yesterday.... I am a PADI Instructor turned freediver but still moonlight SCUBA.. I used to run a D9 forever but I had to buy this bad mamerjammer!!! MK2i because why would anyone pay that much and not at least have the option of integration? Also its a smart watch to boot! Thanks for your epic review man I feel like I know my way around the computer and its still being processed somewhere in the interwebs looking forward to taking her to the Bahamas on the short! All the best, Ricky
What an epic comment!! Cheers Ricky, really appreciated you taking the time to give me your thoughts. That’s the thing - it’s not just a dive computer, the smart watch and fitness apps really do make this a serious contender with AI thrown in for good measure. Can’t wait to get a transmitter hooked up to this bad boy to really give it a run for its money!! Really glad you enjoyed the review - hope to bring you some more epicness with it very soon!! Enjoy the Bahamas - let me know how you get on with it..! 👍🏻
$1,620 after tax with free 2 day shipping. Order placed. Can’t wait to get it. Sucks that transmitter is 3-5wks on shipping. But looking forward to having watch for now. Great video.
Thanks for the positive feedback Michael - really appreciated 👍🏻 Amazing - hope you love it as much as I do! Yeah, shame the transmitter wasn’t ready for launch, but hey-ho. At least it gives us something else to look forward to...! 😊
Finally the wait is over.... "The love-child of a Descent Mk1 and a Fenix 6" :D say no more... Interested to know how the connectivity to sport buds like Jabra Elite Sport is... Particularly for music controls (play/stop/next/previous) - Surely if not supported could be included in a firmware upgrade or app install I'd hope...
And what a love child!! 🤣 I’m going to be connecting my sports Bose buds this weekend via Bluetooth. I see literally no reason why your Jabra Elite bids won’t connect either... will definitely be including this in a future review 👍🏻
Very good first review. Thank you! I have the MK1 today and plan to upgrade to the MK2 or MK2i. I have a question. On the MK2i, if you do not have paired an transmitter, what is shown on the screen while in dive mode? Is the section with the tank display left blank, or is it used for some other information, or is the section removed so the display then looks like the one on the MK2? That would be very valuable for me when deciding which model to choose...
I’m on this... until I get it in the water I’m unsure what is customisable on the dive screens, but asked some questions to see if I can find out before 👍🏻
Great Review!! More I thought about it, there is a lot of dated dive computer tech. It holds it's value because we have so few options, not because the tech is modernized. For example, aqualung i550c is 2016 tech, still sells full retail in 2020. Even the suunto designs are dated. Hopefully this product makes some waves. I think I would use it everyday except when cycling. I'd hate to fall and destroy it.
As that’s it - will be really interesting to see what the competitors now do to stay current with the ever changing evolution in technology. Really exciting start to what could be a great few years in development. You should definitely use for cycling. If you fall off don’t use your wrist. Go head first - cycling helmets are amazing these days! 😉
Hi , thanx for this amazing video that you made 👌🏼 well done sir . Same as you I was waiting for MK2i so long ! It’s absolutely phenomenal and stunning 🤩 Fardad from IRAN.
Thanks for the comment - glad you enjoyed the review! I reckon (and this is a hunch) that they will deliver a full titanium version as they did with the Mk1. Although remember the Mk2i does come with the titanium bezel and backplate. It's pretty cool..!
Hi mate, thanks for the video. Very much looking at getting one of these. Quick question, do you have to use the Garmin T1 Transmitter or can you use any one? I have a Scubapro one, will that work with the Descent Mk2i? Thanks!
Hey buddy - glad you found it useful. I'm afraid so - the T1 pod is proprietor to the Descent due to the sonar technology. The T1 can only be used with the Garmin and only the Garmin can only connect to the T1. I did do a separate video in the T1 transmitter and also a video on dive data screens. Check them out - you might find them useful.
Great review...subscribed from watching the 1st video. Thank you very much. I got my Garmin Descent MKi2 4/7 ago. I based my decision on great consistent reviews, excellent smartwatch, outdoors and DC in one gadget. The only downside so far that the sleep sync takes about 2 hours!! I opted not to buy the transmitter. Unless you are a divemaster or diving with a buddy whom you need to keep an eye I don't think you really need it as you still have to carry the SPG? Tried everything the backlight hand gesture won't work, but then I found DND was turned on. Once this turned off it was working fine. Thank you
I used to have a MK1 and I loved it apart from I couldn't use the watch as a daily smart watch, because I am a professional skydiver and every single time I jumped out of a plane, the watch locked into a dive mode after free falling for about 5000ft. The fast rate of decent the fast rate of increased pressure) the watch couldn't handle. Once locked into the dive mode it took several button combination to reset and to get out of the dive mode. I talked to Garmin about it and they couldn't really help me, except taking this beautiful watch back off me. It surprised me that this watch couldn't handle the skydive situation, because it has a parachute mode as well. But of course parachuting ans skydiving(freefall for a longer time) are two different things. And of course how many Garmin customers are divers/freedivers and skydivers at the same time? Probably not many really. But I would love to know if the MK2 can handle this now and if it does, I would buy one straight away again. Not sure if anyone can give me an answer here. By the way, after the MK1 didn't work for me, I talked to Suunto about their D5 in regards of my problem at the BOOT exhibition show in Düsseldorf Germany last year and they took and tested the D5 in a pressure chamber to simulate a rapid increase of pressure (what would happen on a skydiving decent) in front of my eyes. It all looked good and I bought a Suunto D5. Guess what? After my first skydive decent the D5 went into a locked Dive mode as well. So it didn't work either. : ((
For a while I always assumed the fenix was all anyone ever needed in a watch and assumed diving would be included as a software upgrade with the 100M depth limit. Come to find out the MK2i is really that watch but before i drop twice as much as the fenix I’m making sure it has everything I want. While I don’t skydive now I can imagine that will be on the plate eventually. I really hope that lock out problem has been resolved
Great review! While I dive I spend much more time snorkeling. Can I use this to track my snorkeling activities or does the pool mode allow for snorkeling?
Sorry for the delay - I missed this comment! The watch actually has an apnea mode for free diving and snorkelling. I thing that owuld be better for you especially if you are using it to dive down.
You mentioned about something for the future.. How about working with a underwater camera housing that 1) provide camera info 2) With the housing unit auto adjust the white balance for the camera according to depth..
The only thing they've missed on this watch is that it's only rated to 100m, the Teric is rated to 200m. I have a Fenix 6x and a Teric and two pods for the Teric. I would love to change to the Mk2i but that depth rating is a concern to me as a technical mixed gas diver.
Hi Mark - yes, I do get that. There will be a number of hardcore tech divers that won’t like the depth rating. Does seem strange they didn’t match the Teric - I mean if you’re going to pack all that into a device then you may as well cover off all bases. I guess Garmin saw the +100m range of divers as a small percentage of customers 🤷🏻♂️
Not sure if this has already been mentioned, but for an instructor you'd only need to have a pod on the student's first stage and let the student use a separate cheaper computer.
@@BlackMantaPhotography Thank you for responding to this question. I want to be able to monitor my wife's tank pressure from my computer, but she didn't want to change to a "complicated dive computer". She likes to keep the tech simple, but I like the extra things this can do. Thanks for a great review.
It’s a really good question that I can’t give a clear answer on yet. My hunch - I’d be surprised if the sonar emitted is strong enough to cause issues, but I have asked some questions in the hope I can get a more detailed answer. As soon as I have them I’ll get back to you 👍🏻
Hi Stephanie - I’ve asked the question on sonar, and as expected I was informed that the level this emits at is very low. I have been informed that there will be an official comms/statement on this from Garmin. As soon as hear or see it I’ll let you know 👍🏻
Hi, your review is great and professional, I enjoyed watching it, thank you! I have the MK1, and I've noticed they've changed the screw bar that holds the band to a spring bar. Is it as strong as the screw bar ? Thanks!
Yes, you’re correct - it is different. Too early to say really. First impressions are it pretty sturdy, and is the same concept that I see on all other dive computers that have interchangeable watch straps.
Hi Tristan - thanks for the question. This one has actually popped up already, and was able to get a clear response on the matter. The Pulse Oximeter can be set so that it is on permanently, however, it only takes readings when the user is static (so during rest periods or through the night during sleep). Whilst I do understand that Apnea is relatively low impact, I'm not sure it will be classed as low enough as rest for a reading to occur. I believe the best it will offer is for the user to be able to take a reading during a rest period after the dive. Hope that helps?
Hi Mathieu - I haven't used the swim app profusely, but I do know the GPS routing works well om the surface, so I would say yes. I'll see if I can find out more.
Hi really appreciate the review. One note of I hope, constructive criticism, do not buy until you have tried the dive planner! Please show the dive planner and explain it as I do not understand, run time in seconds? If so why is it so different to shearwater, deco planner, Baltic etc. I am really impressed by the smartwatch capabilities and the screens etc are clear and easy to understand But a dive planner that generates different schedules to the other resources that I have is a problem for me. Buhlman ZHL16C is Buhlman ZHL16 after all. By the way my testing was all done with GF of 45/80
@@1964karlos yes, it launched today for sure. I was able to get my hands on one for a few days from demo stock that was in the country to review for the channel. I’ve been super lucky that some of the review videos on the channel have done particularly well. Sadly everything we review has to go back though, but will definitely be upgrading to a Mk2i - amazing bit of kit!
@@BlackMantaPhotography you compare it to the shearwater Teric and say the screen on the Garmin looks slightly bigger. Absolutely correct as apparently the screen on the Teric is 1.39 inches in diameter whereas the Garmin is 1.4 inches in diameter! 😂
Great decision - you will love the Mk2i..! I would be surprised if there were any BF discounts seeing as it launched today. But - you never know. The way this year has gone nothing would surprise me!
I agree with BMP, this is like a flagship model and much awaited by many divers. Regardless of discounts, this dive watch will sell many units. Die hard MK1 users always wanted AI and now its here. Garmin brand is a great brand and I wish they would discount and with the global covid outbreak, anything is possible. Great video
@@divesoflo indeed - anything really is possible in this crazy world right now. What we need is for the pandemic to end and for international to get back to normal - that will kickstart sales across all scuba products!
What a beautiful watch do you know if I bought the normal mk2 if I could get a transmitter later would it be compatible or do I have to buy a mk2i and if I bought a transmitter later it wouldn’t work
@@BlackMantaPhotography already bought my mk2i a month ago lol but today I bought the transmitter!!!!! I’m very happy and ready to take this into the water but answer me this. What’s a better watch overall mk2i or sunnto d5?
@@abbadabduljawad2288 for me it's definitely the Mk2i. More complete, and the features of the Garmin by far out weigh the Suunto. What you have to remember though is the price. The Mk2i is nearly 3 times the price for the D5...!
MM nice nice, but i think it's bad that i can't see notifications.. To be a proper smartwatch not only dive computer, thay should support notifications from social networks such as whatsapp, messanger and also missed calls and messages, it's nice to be there and you don't need then to take also with you smart band to see that. ) Also they can later add support of google maps..Would be nice to quick download map, and then save spots direct to your account.Good watch with new features, it's good that someone make something like that. May be others will start also to do better comps.. But i like an old fashioned still like my Suunto d6i ;) But one day i will try something like that. I like new technologies
Hi - thanks so much for the question and positive comment. Really glad you enjoyed the video! So, I can definitely see notifications on the Descent Mk2 from social media, email, what's app etc, and can also see and answer calls, although when you answer the call it answers it on the phone so you will need your phone with you. In fact, any notification I get on my phone can be viewed on the Mk2. You don't need Google Maps as the map functions on the Mk2 are pretty good. The Mk2 supports GPS, Glonass and Galileo so has some of the best satellite coverage out there!
Good question! I don't know any info on a Descent 3 landing - the Mk2/i and the Mk2S were about 18 months apart, so on that basis we'd be looking at something towards the end of 2022. I have heard on the grapevine that there might be an alternate version of a Descent model landing in the coming days, but I know it won't be a Mk3... Keep your eyes peeled for news this week! Will try and get my hands on whatever it is to have a little look! As it stands, the MK2i is currently still the best version to own - bigger screen, AI etc... All depends how long you're willing to wait to see if a newer MK3 model arrives??
@@BlackMantaPhotography Well now we got the G1... But with the release of the fenix 7 (with touch!) I'm facing the same question: wait or buy. A mk3 with touch would be awesome for all overwater-activities!
That's a really great question, and one I've had a few times actually... If you're happy with the Mk1 then no, I'd say stick with it. If we ignore the AI aspect, I found the Mk1 display to be too small because of the larger bezel. The Mk2 eradicates that so for me the upgrade was def worth it. Then there is the firmware to consider. The Mk1 is based on the Fenix 5, while the Mk2 has the same DNA as the Fenix 6, so lots more capabilities, health features, better maps, better smartphone integration etc. If it's just used for diving and the Mk1 is fine for you then stick with it. If you use the watch all the time out of the water then certainly consider the upgrade for everything non diving!
Similar but different is the best way to describe it I think. Garmin have used their own technology from their marine world to incorporate the sonar/subwave into the transmitter. I never used the Lynx but as aware of the sonic connection they used as locator beacon. The difference here is the Mk2i uses the sonar technology to transmit the air integration capabilities.
Hello..! Great to have you join - really appreciated! Truct me - the Teric v MK2i is definitely happening - just waiting for a new drysuit to arrive! It will be the first video I do when it arrives. Have a whole load of things in the pipeline, so hoping it won't bee too long!
Thanks for the video. I'm looking to change my Cobra dive computer which I do not like at all. Concerning the Garmin MK2, I like to know when going for a dive if the Garmin MK2 will be activate as soon as it hit the water like the Aqualung I300C or you must activate it before entering the water? Also, I like to know if there is a dive planner which suggest the time and depth following a second dive? Thanks Alain from Montreal, Canada
Is recommend if I have Mk1 to MK2 ? Are all the problems from Mk1 were fixed on Mk2 ,like one of them the ALT which is needed to calibrate after some time ?
That really depends on what you will use it for. The Mk1 is based on the Fenix 5, while the Mk2 has the same operating system as the Fenix 6. If you want the improved operating system, additional life manager and health features, and you want AI then it’s definitely worth the upgrade from Mk1 to Mk2. And yes, I believe the issues you referred to like ALT were rectified with the Fenix 6 watch model 👍🏻
Î really wish they would offer Air Integration on the Inox version. DLC coating and anodized aluminum (buttons) tend to fade over time when exposed to sunlight. Common Garmin!
Thanks Ben - appreciate the support. Actually, at this point I don't know, but will 100% look to see if it's possible when we get this in the water with the transmitter 👍🏻
@@bencallahan Hi Ben - just a quick update on this. I've discovered in dive settings and customisation that you can amend the data fields shown on the dive screen. Now, I won't know 100% until I have a transmitter connected to it, but you can select lots of different data details. I've customised a screen that allows me to have the compass bearing showing and 'in theory' the tank reading can be shown. I think the only reason it won;t allow me to select it now is because there's no pod connection. I'm 99.9% sure you can though.
@@BlackMantaPhotography Thanks so much for the update! OK I'm really hoping that it's possible because I'd love to be able to look at one screen and see both without switching. Ugh, when will they get that transmitter out already! :)
Really fancy upgrading my MK1 to a Mk2i but no Titanium Strap supplied! REALLY :-( I like to dive with the Rubber Strap but I never take my Watch off when not diving and I use the Metal Strap supplied with the MK1! suppose I can just swap it over from my MK1 and keep the MK1 as a Backup Computer now it's not worth selling, but only if they've not changed the Strap mount like they have with the Charger! Also no Wireles Charging, what we goto wait for the MK3 for that!
Don’t fear Terry..! Both the Mk1 and Mk2 use the same QuickFit 26 straps, so all the straps across both are compatible. I’m currently using an older style orange silicone strap for a Mk1 on my Mk2i. AND... although the charger clip is different - the pin configuration is the same. While the size of the Mk2 means it won’t fit in the cradle that the Mk1 used, the Mk2 crocodile style charger clip fits perfectly onto the Mk1. 🙂
@@BlackMantaPhotography WOW! what a lovely Computer! I love the look and feel of it compared to the MK1!! Just had it delivered from Dubai along with the T1 Transmitter with no Import Duty and delivered in 2 Days via FedEx to the UK! Now my only gripe, why has Gamin not produced a clip on protector to use while diving :-( even the MK1 I had to heat and stretch one from another Garmin Watch but it worked. Going to be a long time before I can re book my dive trips, so wont be testing it out anytime soon! :-(
@@bbz149 fantasic Terry - glad it arrived! You're going to LOVE it!! Regarding the screen protector - you don't see many dive computers these days coming with a screen protector as most have the sapphire screens meaning they are virtually scratch-proof. You'll have to go some to mark it underwater! Always found older styles like the Suunto Vyper coming with scratch guards as they were cheap plastic, or glass screens.
@@BlackMantaPhotography Hi, loving it already thanks! :-) Would love it even more if I could go diving! :-( My main concern is scratching the Casing as its not hard to mark apparently.
Then there's me that though the teric was expensive. XD jokes aside it is an impressive dive comp, really shows how powerfull 'next gen' dive comp can be.
Spot on!!! Yes, it IS expensive, but the features make it so worth it in my opinion. Can’t wait to see what the competitors develop and bring to the market to keep the competition alive!
@@BlackMantaPhotography True, the Mk2 is the type of dive comp that you buy once & use it till the end of your diving journey. Me personally, I just hoped that one day colored screen becomes the mainstream in mid-range to budget range dives comp. Monochrome screens sure are getting old.
@@zahirulhafiz8065 I truly believe this has the potential to lead the market for some time..! I hear you about mid range - Suunto have been great at delivering on this area, and they must be due something new to follow up on the D5
Hey there... no, it’s new. Everything on the Mk2 is newly designed except for the Quickfit 26 straps. The operating software is based on the Fenix 6, but even that is tweaked slightly 👍🏻
Feels like the Garmin MK2i is the Jack of all Trades Master of None! I am currently looking to buy a dive computer and the money is absolutely burning a hole in my pockets right now. I was so interested in the Teric that I pretty much thought it as a done deal. Then I start reading about the Mk2I and the opportunity to buy this versus the Teric had me confused, then I watched your video and I think I made up my mind. It's the Teric for me. I like the Garmin but it just seems like it's trying to do to much and not doing any of them really well. I have read the runners reviews on the MK2 and they are very mixed but my main interest is diving and in that regard the Teric seems to still be on top. The Sonar and multiple AI units might have been the game changer but honestly the price of the watch plus each transmitter is just ridiculous to go past getting just one. My main gripe is that the MK2i just contains too much stuff in all those menus and that may be great for the person who is into a ton of activities and also a techno file but for people that want it mainly for Diving the Teric has a much more intuitive Interface and a much better screen. Plus it's a tested design with a great reputation. I do think your right that Shearwater has got to up their game with a Teric 2 that at least has GPS and Maps built in. The battery life could be better with Teric but honestly both of the watches are just way to big to wear on my hand everyday. So in the end I am pretty sure I am going to pull the trigger on the dedicated tool and not get one that does two dozens things and might not do any of them well.
Thanks for the detailed comment - it’s really well put. I don’t really argue with anything you’ve said - the Teric is without doubt one of the best DC’s out there. I get what your saying about the Mk2 trying to do too much, but once you get used to the menu system you actually realise it is pretty intuitive and easy to use. Diving wise it will do everything the Teric will do and more, but if you’re only going to use the watch for diving then maybe the Mk2 isn’t for you. I would dispute the ‘master of none’ comment though. Garmin do what they do and very well. They’re a multi billion dollar organisation that lead the way in fitness tech and are at the forefront of marine and sonar technology too. Remember - the Mk2 is only their second offering in the world of scuba, and to be this competent at it all ready and to produce something that is challenging the market leaders, doesn’t happen by accident. The Fenix 6 which the Mk2 is based on is one of the most incredible sports watches I’ve used. If you can get the chance to go into your local Garmin stockist and check out the Mk2, do so before you make your purchase. You might be pleasantly surprised 👍🏻
Can the MK2 display the SpO2 in real time continuously? Do you think that feature would be of benefit for Apnea divers and spear fishermen as 30second delayed alarm trend etc. That could also be used for CCR monitor? thank you again for your review and consideration of this question.
Hey - thanks for the question - it's actually one that popped up once or twice already. The Pulse Oximeter on the Mk2 can be activated so it runs all the time, however, it only takes readings during periods of rest or inactivity (sleep etc). Whilst I do understand that free-diving is very low impact, I'm not sure it would be low enough to register as a period of rest..? Hope that makes sense? Really appreciate the question and glad to hear you found the review useful.
Sadly that might be a while away now with lockdown and winter, but will do my best! What I will say is they are 2 very different computer to compare - the Mk2i covers all diving including Technical and CCR and has a whole host of features such as health monitoring, fitness and much more, while the D5 is a good recreational dive computer and watch. Also worth pointing out the price difference of about £900! The Mk2i comes in at £1400 and the D5 is around the £550 mark.
Any thoughts or insights into the reported audible sonar noise every 4 seconds from the transmitter? It's the only thing stopping me from committing to this unit. Supposedly Garmin's solutions of reducing the power setting on the transmitter or rerouting it via an HP hose does little to remedy the issue.
This question popped up so many times not long after the transmitter was launched actually. There's a separate video on this channel where I test the transmitter range, and the whole time I never heard the 'beeping' once. In fact I've never noticed the beeping. I'm heading out on a trip in a couple of weeks and will be paying particular attention to see if I can hear it, so either I'm deaf underwater, or the issue is so small it's droned out by ambient underwater noises...? Will definitely cover this off in the next video though...
Hi there - sorry for the delay in replying. ATR means air time remaining. This is constantly calculated based on the rate you are using your gas (SAC Rate) and the depth you are diving at etc. Hope that helps? Thanks for the question!
Hello from Singapore! I just received my Mk2i today and can't wait to bring it on a dive! By the way, do you know if the main watch face shows the Surface Interval on the main watch face instead of having to go through the widgets? When customising the watch face I can't find a way to display either surface interval or no-fly time.
Good question - and one I can’t answer clearly until I get it in the water fully myself. In terms of surface interval - I’m unsure if it’s an available data field to select. If it is it might not be available to show until it’s recorded a dive. With regards to no fly time - yes, this will show on the main watch face in a number representing the estimated no-fly, along with an aeroplane logo with a line through it. You might find this link useful...
I been waiting for this for so long too! (google "garmin mk2 descent release date" every day for last year! LOL) Mine (hopefully) arrives tomorrow (10/24) Mk2i and enough time to play with it before diving Socorro before and over T'giving Holiday!
Hi Mike - hope you're well? Yes - the Mk2 will apply decompression limits based on your dive profile. It is always advised to perform a safety stop between 3-5m though even if the computer has cleared any deco time. I find most advanced DC's these days will factor dive limits based on your dive profile - only ones in my experience that don't are the Suunto's with the RGBM
From what i read from your comments I thought you had another video coming with it being used in the water and maybe AI last weekend. Did it fall through?
Hey buddy - nope, didn’t fall through. Actually happened yesterday. Was a bit of a logistical nightmare finding a location to do the pool test, and also getting hands on a transmitter as they aren’t in the country for retail sales yet. Manic day with work today but will get it all pulled together for the weekend. Watch this space!! 👀
And sometimes the answer is staring you in the face!! 🤣 100% accurate. Of all the freedivers I personally know they are also accomplished scuba divers. However, fascinated by the number of people who ‘only’ freedive that have commented on this video.
Thanks Dimitriy - great question. It's worth calling out there are 2 operating system models that depend on where in the world you are. You have RoW (Rest of World) and APAC (Asian Pacific and China). Living in Europe I have the RoW model. There are 28 languages available. I'll be honest, my foreign languages are a bit rusty, and as they are named in the language for that country there are some I can not decipher as there are some in Arabic/Russian etc. I'm looking into this in more detail and will come back to you once I have the translated names for the 28 languages that you can choose from. Hope that helps for now? Thanks for the great question!
@@BlackMantaPhotography Thank for your reply! I`m in the north east US and yesterday was trying to order the watch but it showed me 5-8 weeks of wait time.. I`m specifically interested if there is a Russian language in a RoW version. In your watch language settings menu there should be " Русский " - for Russian if any lol. First week of January going to dive in Mexico and really hope to get my watch by then))
@@DimasinaNYC Haha... then yes, I can confirm 100% there is a Russian option! I'll make sure I'll scroll through all them when I compare the Mk2i to the Teric. Will try and sort that video in he next week or so.
@@DimasinaNYC I got confirmation of the languages included.. They are: Danish Dutch Finnish French German Italian Norwegian Spanish Swedish Croatian Czech Hungarian Polish Slovak Slovenian Russian Greek Brazilian Portuguese Hebrew Arabic Turkish Bulgarian Estonian Latvian Lithuanian Romanian Ukrainian
Hey there. Thank you for the video I am on the search of a diving computer. Just got my certifications and can’t wait to keep diving. My questions is regarding the air integration. If you decide to use AI. Do you still need the SPG, I know SPG is used to test your second stage before diving. But with AI how do you test your second stage. Did I miss something in your video? Thank you for the help.
Hey there, glad you found the video useful and good luck with your new diving adventure! It’s a good question, and one that pops up time to time. AI should be seen as an add on benefit and not as a replacement to an SPG. An SPG is a reliable source to know the gas contents of your tank, and would be used in the case that anything happens to your dive computer, transmitter or AI connection. If your dive computer failed, or the connection dropped out, or even if the transmitter blew an o-ring or it was knocked/broken, then you have the reassurance of seeing real time tank readings. Although these cases are few and far between, they really do happen - I’ve seen them happen, and even had a dive computer fail on me during a dive. I can’t make you dive with an SPG, but I would strongly advise you have one as part of your standard scuba kit. I hope that helps to answer your question 👍🏻
So putting the price aside you will take the MK2i over the Teric? I really can't decide, I'm not going to wear it as a watch much out of the water so I just can't decide on if it's worth an extra 1000 AUD for the watch and transmitter when the teric does everything I need it to for diving. On the other hand the Garmin has a lot more packed into it but I doubt I'll use all the extra features as my phone is always in my pocket. 🤷♂️ HELP? 🤣
I know Dylan - it really is such a dilemma!! Honestly? Hand on heart I would take the Mk2i over the Teric. The Teric was the one to beat, and no matter how hard others tried it always held its crown. The thing is Garmin have listened to all the feedback from divers on the Mk1 and delivered. Diving wise, the Mk2 does everything the Teric does - and more!! Add to the mix the technology behind the T1 transmitter and you have yourself a clear winner. I’m not a massive sports junkie - I go for a run every now and then, but even I find all the other features really handy. The smart watch features are great, and yes, like you I always have my phone with me, but always now find myself looking at notifications on my watch father than picking the phone up to see if it’s a message I need to reply to. The customisation features are far superior too! I don’t work for Garmin, nor am I sponsored by them in any way shape or form - my view is my own as is my opinion. If you’re asking for my advice, invest the extra money and get the Mk2i. It’s looking better, has better battery, does more stuff than you could imagine, and will be on your wrist for years because I can’t see it being beat any time soon. I know there is a strong love affair for Shearwater out there - I was one of those people, but honestly mate you will be amazed at what you can do with it. I will be doing a comparison video between the 2 - had planned to have it done by now - but a house move has delayed it so will hopefully be sometime in the new year now. But to save you waiting - get the Garmin, because that’s what I’ll be say in the vid..!
Oh, and to your point about not wearing it as a watch, and only planning to have it on while in the water... SNAP! I’ve never worn a watch my whole life - only when diving. BUT - since I got the Mk2 it hasn’t left my wrist except for charging. Would be without it now... Trust me - you’ll do exactly the same!
Okay well thanks for all that info, between your reply and garmins reply about the altimeter being good enough to skydive with i think I'm sold on it. Just want to know one more thing, how tough is it? And what kind of warranty does it have? I know nothing last forever but for the price I'd like to think I'd get at least 10 years out of it.
@@dylanslater83 it’s as tough as old boots! Has the same non scratch screen as the Teric and the Mk2i has the titanium casing. I’ve been wearing mine day in day out - in the middle of moving house and lost count of the times I’ve accidentally smashed it against a door handle or bashed it against a wall..! Do you know what, I can’t actually remember what the warranty is - I’d check but I’ve packed all the boxes up. Will see what I can find out. Although I will say that Garmin’s customer service is excellent. I’ve heard about people having and issue with an old Mk1 and they’ve just replaced it without question. I think you’ve definitely made the right decision!
In my opinion - yes. Under the water they both run the same customisable operating system, but the Descent will allow for more customisation with the screens that you can view. Also, above water the Teric is just a smart looking watch. The descent is a smart watch (as well as looking good). there is far more you can use the Descent for - fitness tracking, connecting with your smart phone, etc. It's basically a life manager. I own both - the Descent is my everyday use and go to for diving 100%.
MK2i can track your heart rate underwater using a chest strap? The optical sensor on the wrist is inaccurate. In addition, the watch is worn on top of the wetsuit.
Hi Patrice - the battery in the Mk2 is not user changeable. It would need to be replaced by Garmin or an authorised dealer. I don't have any details on the cost to do this, but I wouldn't expect it would need to be changed for a number of years in line with most other Garmin products. In most cases the battery would outlast the use of the product - meaning you'd be more likely to upgrade/replace before you needed to change it. Hope that helps?
Great review! Was wondering if the compass is only visible in the 'compass' screen? I love how the shearwater teric has the ability to pin your heading marker to the outside circumference of your main dive screen. Anyhow if not perhaps it could be added in a firmware update?
I own the Descent MK1. On this MK2 is it possible to customize the single gas OC, multiple gas OC and CCR mode pages by adding the maximum depth? On MK1 it is not possible!
Hey buddy - great question! You wouldn’t believe this, but I’m literally in the middle of filming a video on dive data screens! Hope to get it sorted by the end of the day, edited and ready for upload tomorrow..! Keep your eyes peeled for that. But to answer your question - yes, there is a page in the dive data screens that allows you to show max depth 👍🏻
I have a question and a request. I would like to know if the Garmin Descent MK2I is compatible with the Sheawater Perdix AI transmitter? As a requested, I would like to see a video about the operation of the tides function. Thanks.
Hi Heitor - I’ll definitely cover the Tides function when I upload the video on connecting to the Dive App. Sadly no, the Descent Mk2i connects to the Garmin transmitter only. It’s completely proprietary and done so because of the Subwave technology. Hope that helps. 👍🏻
@@WetSouls this is what I’ve been saying to people. Some great DC’s out there, but the higher advanced AI on the Mk2i opens up so many opportunities, then add the navigations, multi satellite use, smart watch, life manager, fitness apps, customisation options, advanced diving formats etc etc... Will be really interesting to see how the competition reacts with their next models and upgrades 👍🏻
@@BlackMantaPhotography iv been using a vicoactive for all of my sport / fitness and a suuntoD5 for diving. With this there is no reason to have any other device on the wrist. It does everything. Battery life?
@@WetSouls battery life on the Mk2? As I say in the video review it really depends on what you have working in the background. 21days as a watch - 12 days as an interactive smart watch. Garmin state 40 hours of dive time, but my feeling that will really depend on how often you are in the menus, what background health stats are doing recorded etc. I reckon in normal use you’ll exceed the 40 hours
That is really what I had in mind. It will likely be a desktop review as the dive features are very much the same when you remove AI. It then comes down the other features. If I’m honest - and being completely independent, if you are looking for a dive computer that doesn’t have AI then the Mk1 is a really good choice, especially when I see prices being offered with money off deals. My hunch for what it’s worth - I reckon there will some good deals on the Mk1 come Black Friday. 👍🏻
@@BlackMantaPhotography I have the same feeling and right now I only freedive but I do a ton of things on land so having the crossover would be awesome. I really don’t want to have 2 watches when one can do it all.
@@dillon9147 it’s been a pleasure..! Crazy 24 hours or so, and know I still have a tonne of review stuff to do! Should be able to get my hands on a Mk1 soon and sill sort as soon as I can 👍🏻
It’s a good question, and one I will absolutely discuss more when I fully compare them both. What I will say though is the Teric has an AMOLED screen while the Mk2 the colour MiP screen. You’d have to say the Teric has the slight upper hand on that one
Good question. Boat mode is essentially the same type of thing you would use for running. If you were on a boat and open the app it gives you your speed in nautical metrics, and relevant land speed. However, if you download ‘Boat Data’ from the Garmin IQ store you can connect your Mk2 to the chart plotter on the boat and see the data on your Mk2. Pretty cool right??
The pulse oximeter works when the device is worn on the skin and the Pulse Ox feature turned on. So yes, it will work while free diving as long as you’re wearing it. I am taking the liberty to 100% double check to be on the safe side too 👍🏻
@@juhanivaihkonenunderwater yes, if you activate Pulse Ox it runs constantly so always records while you are wearing regardless of what activity you are in. I’m not sure if the data from Pulse Ox shows directly in the Apnea data, but have seen data from Pulse Ox directly. But will get this all checked.
@@juhanivaihkonenunderwater Hi Juhani - so after some investigation I believe that while you can have the Pulse Ox running 24/7 if you wish, it only takes readings when you are completely static. Therefore rest periods after exercise or during sleep are the best times. Whilst I get that freediving is a very relaxed sport, I'm not sure it's relaxed enough to take a reading during the activity itself. Hope that helps?
@@BlackMantaPhotography ok, I was hoping that it would have recorded it during the training into appnea log. It would have been very important information.
Noted - thanks Charles for raising it. There will be a follow up review on the MK2 that is planned for the next couple of months and will include running, bike and kayak. Hopefully this will give a much more rounded view... :)
@@BlackMantaPhotography Appreciate! I'm honestly thinking about buying the MK2i (I'm a runner, rider, swimmer skier and scuba diver) but can't find any review online that focus on the other features than the diving part.
Thanks for the question Chase. Actually, the bars that run up the side of the screen are fully customisable. Rather than write out everything you could have here, I'm going to point you to the last video we uploaded on the Mk2. Fantastic review! Nice one. Having watched this, I want one. I wasn't sure at first... I am now. BUT do I need one? Arggh! Massive dilemma. Finally Garmin has managed to nail it. They have squeezed everything you need into one wrist worn device that covers pretty much everything except a Unicorn detector! BUT that's the problem.... I think it is too much tech. Great if you are starting out in the tech world and don't have any wrist worn tech, or you have reached the point where your tech is so out of date and you need an upgrade. BUT if you already have up to date tech it causes a massive headache. £1750 for the Mk2i + Transmitter is a fair price IF you use this device for multi sports / everything it CAN be used for. £1750 for an AI dive computer? Wow! Sorry Garmin - Not a chance! Instead you could go top of the range Suunto or Shearwater and get a top of the range set of regs with the £change. In my opinion; The Mk2i is a great looking piece of kit.... so is my Swiss made timekeeper which outshines it aesthetically in every way. I use 'myzone' for my fitness at the gym. I use a Garmin Edge 520 with a HR monitor for my cycling (which is compatible with my myzone MZ-1) I use an App on my iPhone for playing golf - it is £free. For diving I have a Suunto D6i with Transmitter and a Suunto Eon Steel with Pod. I have invested in a lot of devices that were designed to do a specific job. I too have been waiting for the ultimate one shop replacement to do away with them all. IS the Mk2i it? Do I want the Mk2i that covers all these bases in one.... YES please. BUT unless money is no object, I'll be waiting a while longer. Even with the impressive Transmitter tech (great video on that too by the way!) I couldn't justify it. If this device goes wrong, I can't go diving, AND I can't do any other sports I rely on tech for either.... I think Garmin should make a 'stand alone' AI Dive Computer and bring the price down into a more competitive bracket (sub £1000 w/transmitter) Surely if you want more on your device you could add Apps / Widgets / software upgrades and pay for the add-ons? A fantastic effort and Garmin should be applauded. It will be at the top of my recommendations (especially as Suunto no longer appears to be making the Eon steel) but not for me.... Yet! Looking forward to seeing the working comparisons between the Mk2i and Suunto's next year in The Philippines ;-) Keep up the great work.
Hahaha... you've really made me laugh Stu... You start by saying "I want one - I wasn't sure at first but now I am" and then by the end of it "It will be at the top of my recommendations, but not for me... Yet" hahaha.... :) Yeah, really can't wait to get this wet in the Philippines - that's likely to be the next real chance it gets with an impending house move and various travel restrictions over winter..! Then again, if we both had one in the PH we could be checking each others gas :) I hear you om the price - I know it's not cheap, but I do feel you are getting a lot for your cash. I could list plenty of DC's that were as expensive when released - but time will tell. What will be interesting is what the other brands and competitors do to keep up. That's what excites me the most! I've always been a Suunto fan - easy to use and cheap, but they have been seriously left behind. The D5 didn't cut it because of the battery life, and the smart phone notification update isn't enough these days to be a main player. Really hope they design something outstanding next! There is some validity in what you say about 1 DC having everything covered in one device, and what happens if it fails, but you can apply that to so many things in life. Most people have 1 DC on a dive holiday - what do they do if that fails? Most people have 1 car - what do they do if that fails? Most people have 1 TV - what do they do if that fails?? You get my drift. What you need to remember is Garmin aren't some backstreet entity. They're a multi billion pound business that leads in fitness tech, sonar and marine technology, so a DC should be easy play for them. They tested that water with the Mk1 with resounding success and have come back to the market with something unbelievably credible. Also, their customer service is pretty good, and are well known for it. Just out of interest - all the bits of tech you listed above that you use - count up the number of devices, charge cables, plugs, and think about the weight of all that if you wanted to take it on a trip?! You have a watch, a DC, a HR monitor etc etc... - why would you not have everything on one device to save a lot of hassle? I mean, I can even go for a run with the Mk2i and just take my wireless headphones that are connected to the watch and listen to the music stored on my watch - don't even need to take the phone out the house! Makes you think!!
@@BlackMantaPhotography You are spot on mate. As I said, massive dilemma. I would love one but can't justify ditching £2000 of perfectly good kit for it. I would therefore recommend it to anyone who hasn't got a DC with consideration to any other activities they do. I just think Garmin could sell it as a stand alone DC for less than £1000 as an option and let those who want the additional programmes for fitness, golf, tracking Unicorns etc pay for those features additionally. Like you I do many other sports and activity so would want the lot. As you say, time will tell. Suunto got obsessed with colour screens and dropped the ball with new features. Interestingly (although unsurprisingly now sold out!) Mikes Dive Store were selling as a special this weekend the Suunto DX with Transmitter for £499! Wow! A saving of £1030 off RRP!! Hope you're enjoying the go kart racing in Turkey? ;-)
@@stuartgreen8 🤣🤣🤣🤣 go kart track 🤣🤣🤣 No, I do get what you’re saying. It’s always a dilemma, a bit like when upgrading camera kit. Do you keep the working and trusted kit or dump a few £k on a new set up. We’ve both been guilty of that recently. My advice - get the old kit on the 2nd hand market and go all in! You know you want to..! 😉
I have received my Descent Mk2i. I have a problem with it: The display is too dim. It is very hard to read it, especially indoors, or even outdoors in the shade. There does not seem to be a way to increase the display brightness (not the backlight). Any help on this?
Hi Antonio, the backlight setting is the brightness. You can change the default 30% it’s set at normally (I have mine set to 50% on the selection ‘not during activity’). Steps to change this are: 1 - Long press on the left middle button to enter menu. 2 - Short press on left middle button to show ‘System’. 3 - Select ‘System’ by pressing top right button. 4 - Scroll down to ‘Backlight’ using left bottom button and then select Backlight with top right button. 5 - Scroll down to ‘Not During Activity’ and select it. 6 - Scroll down to Brightness and select it. 7 - Using the left middle and bottom button scroll through the % numbers until you are happy with the level of brightness, and select with the top right button. You will need to press the top right button again to confirm. Like I say, I find at 50% level the brightness is perfect for me both in and outdoors. For info, my watch face is black background, with white digital style numbers. Hope this helps you out... let me know if not 👍🏻

@@BlackMantaPhotography thank you for your detailed instructions. However, it does not change the brightness of the display when the backlight is not on. As its name implies, it seems to control the brightness of the backlight, but is has no effect when the backlight is not on After changing the backlight brightness (as per your instructions and as per the manual), to 100%, the display is still as dim as before once the backlight goes off My watch face is also black background with white digital style numbers. When the backlight is off, the white digital numbers become dim grey.
I have been told a way, not ideal, but it helps: Set Gestures to On, to make the backlight come on when you raise your wrist. We are back to the same old issue like with the earlier versions of the Apple watch. A compromise between battery life and usability
@@ansalc ah, I just assumed you had gesture switched on. It's a great feature that only brightens the screen when you look at the watch. If you want the screen to stay bright at all times, and not go dim when not in use then go into System - Backlight - Not During Activity - Timeout - No Timeout. This will leave your screen lit all the time. Obviously, this will drain the battery faster, but does solve your request to have the screen brighter at all times. As I said before I have brightness set to 50% and gesture turned on with a timeout of 8 secs. Hope that helps...
Hmmm - sadly I’m not familiar with the Taxtic, but can tell you the Mk2i is amazing! If you want a good life manager watch, that covers dozens of activities, and can match the leading dive computers with extensive AI range, then definitely get the Descent!
Ok - I’ve done some research. These are 2 very different watches. One allows you to dive to technical depths with trimix gases. The other can tell you the trajectory of a bullet, and wipe itself clean in 10 secs. Really hard to compare to the 2 of them to be honest!?
Hi there - my German is pretty bad so apologies if I've got this wrong, but I think you are asking what is the difference between the 2 models? Well, quite simply, the only difference between the Mk2 and the Mk2i is the fact that the Mk2i has air integration while the Mk2 doesn't. Other than that, the menus, configuration and functionality are completely the same. Hope that helps. :)
With the mk2 released, the mk1 is on sale here in my country at 50% off. Do any of y'all think it's worth it to get the mk1 since it's on sale? I don't rlly need AI cuz I'm doing mostly recreational dives and I do run, cycle, and cardio quite a bit
It’s a good question that I’m sure a lot of people will be wondering? The thing to consider is the Mk1 is based on the Fenix 5 while the Mk2 based on the Fenix 6. There’s a huge difference in the screen size too. If this isn’t a big deal for you then the Mk1 is a good shout fo sure 👍🏻
I say go for it. I love the MK1 and getting it for half price is a steal. As for size, I was concerned at first but when it arrived it was okay and I’ve gotten quite used to depending on it as a daily watch as well. Best of luck!
Anybody upgrading from a MK1 to a MK2 and wants to copy their Dive Logs over to the MK2. Connect MK1 to Computer and copy the Data from the Activity Folder they are .fit Files, and copy to Descent Mk2i\Primary\GARMIN\Activity Folder on the MK2 :-)
Good know mate - thanks for sharing! I also found that my dives from the Mk1 were still in the Garmin Connect app and also transferred to the Garmin Dive app which is good enough for me for dive logs. If you haven't checked them out, do so!
@@BlackMantaPhotography It does on mine too, but If I sell the MK1 and remove it from the App i'm not sure if it will remove the Dive Logs from the Dive App as they are not synched onto the MK2. Well the price I'm being offered for the MK1 it might be worth just keeping it as a backup Computer anyway and selling my Giotto instead!
@@bbz149 first of all, I would def keep it as a back up. Then that way, if you are away traveling you only need the one charger, and the menu configurations are pretty straight forward etc. Finally, even if you did sell it the dive data will still stay in your log. The first few dives I did with a Mk1 were on a loan unit I borrowed for the review. Despite that going back and probably being reset a number of times, I haven't lot my data, or ended up with anyone else's data on my logs. It's allllll good.... ;)
Sorry, I realize that this video is over a year old, but ... For the scenario of the instructor wanting to know the pressure of the students' cylinders, would anyone other than the instructor really need a Garmin Mk21 or could the students (who will probably be using w reg from the dive shop anyways) simply have a Garmin Pod on the 1st stage?
In all honesty, I've never noticed it. Some other users have reported that they could hear a 'veeping' sound underwater, but in all the time I've used it I've never experienced any annoying noises.

And what a love child!! 🤣
I’m going to be connecting my sports Bose buds this weekend via Bluetooth. I see literally no reason why your Jabra Elite bids won’t connect either...
will definitely be including this in a future review 👍🏻
@@BlackMantaPhotography I have already connected mine to my Aftershokz and my KLH headphones.
I’m on this... until I get it in the water I’m unsure what is customisable on the dive screens, but asked some questions to see if I can find out before 👍🏻
@@BlackMantaPhotography and?
@@BlackMantaPhotography Any news on this yet?

Haha... wait until my reaction at the end! 🤣

Thank you
Great comment - thanks so much for taking the time to leave it! So glad you managed to get to grips with the Mk2i - great bit of kit right!?
Loved the box opening...and they say women get excited about shopping:)
Have you looked at the dive planner?
Great video mate!!! I think I will be getting one! I might wait for the next video tho, hopefully the one with the transmitter
Really looking forward to getting in the water with this - I really mean what I say in the video - IT IS AMAZING!!!
Very good review.......waiting for the dive review!!!!!
Thanks David - can not wait to get in the water with it to check the range of the transmitter..!
Not sure if this has already been mentioned, but for an instructor you'd only need to have a pod on the student's first stage and let the student use a separate cheaper computer.
Spot on Peter - and I really should have called that out rather than suggesting the initial outlay including multiple units 👍🏻
@@BlackMantaPhotography Thank you for responding to this question. curious about how the sonar might impact the marine life while diving given than many also use sonar. Thoughts??

As soon as I have them I’ll get back to you 👍🏻
Hi Stephanie - I’ve asked the question on sonar, and as expected I was informed that the level this emits at is very low.
I have been informed that there will be an official comms/statement on this from Garmin. As soon as hear or see it I’ll let you know 👍🏻

Is blood oxygen saturation (Pulse Ox) tracked during Apnea dives? That would be a game changer feature for freediving!
Great review ! I was waiting for the Mk2 and it was worth it.

With the S version recently released, I wonder if I should wait for MK3 or get the MK2i. Wonder how long the wait will be.

Is it worth upgrading from the Mk1 if air integration is not an issue?
Is the Subwave technology like the sonic connection that Liquid Vision used in their Lynx dive computer?
Similar but different is the best way to describe it I think. Garmin have used their own technology from their marine world to incorporate the sonar/subwave into the transmitter. I never used the Lynx but as aware of the sonic connection they used as locator beacon.
The difference here is the Mk2i uses the sonar technology to transmit the air integration capabilities.

100% - can't wait!!
Good call out 👍🏻

Now, I won't know 100% until I have a transmitter connected to it, but you can select lots of different data details. I've customised a screen that allows me to have the compass bearing showing and 'in theory' the tank reading can be shown.
Agree on wireless charging - is a shame that they omitted that.

Great review. Thank you so much. 🙌🏽
You are really more than welcome. Glad you enjoyed it! 👍🏻
Please make a new video comparing the new MK2i up against the Suunto D5!!
@@BlackMantaPhotography Fantastic, thats great news if you confirm its minimal noise! Thanks and looking forward to the update.

I find most advanced DC's these days will factor dive limits based on your dive profile - only ones in my experience that don't are the Suunto's with the RGBM
@@BlackMantaPhotography Thank you!

Nice review. To answer your question, who would not want AI? Freedivers, they would just get the mk2.
And sometimes the answer is staring you in the face!! 🤣
100% accurate.
Of all the freedivers I personally know they are also accomplished scuba divers. However, fascinated by the number of people who ‘only’ freedive that have commented on this video.
Great review man! what languages are available in the settings of this watch?

HELP?
@@BlackMantaPhotography Alright thanks, definitely sold on it. Just waiting for Australia to restock.
Thanks for taking the time to help 🙇♂️
Thankyou for this, very useful
Kindly review the Garmin Descent G1 Solar once u can get your hands on it :)
Is this better than Shearwater Perdix AI?. I am new to Scuba.
@@BlackMantaPhotography Thanks so much.
MK2i can track your heart rate underwater using a chest strap? The optical sensor on the wrist is inaccurate. In addition, the watch is worn on top of the wetsuit.
Hey buddies, How does Battery Change Cost for Garmin Mk2 ? Is it User Changeable?
Did you ever figure out if it does?
So sorry - I missed this comment! No, I've not been able to view the compass on any other screen other than the screen showing the compass
The Dive Data Screen video is now up... 👍🏻

@@BlackMantaPhotography absolutely. This pretty much sets aside quite a bit of the contenders ...
Can you do an in-depth comparison between the descent MK1 and the MK2 (without AI) ? Wondering if the MK2 without AI is worth the price new.

8m range is spherical range as it is in water right?
Yes - so an 8m range in any direction from the watch. Since been told that they are suspecting this range is actually 10m..!
How would you compare the clarity and intensity of screen for the MK2 vs Teric?
It’s a good question, and one I will absolutely discuss more when I fully compare them both.
What I will say though is the Teric has an AMOLED screen while the Mk2 the colour MiP screen.
You’d have to say the Teric has the slight upper hand on that one
What is the boat mode?
Good question. Boat mode is essentially the same type of thing you would use for running. If you were on a boat and open the app it gives you your speed in nautical metrics, and relevant land speed.
However, if you download ‘Boat Data’ from the Garmin IQ store you can connect your Mk2 to the chart plotter on the boat and see the data on your Mk2.
Pretty cool right??

Will the pulse oxymeter work in freediving?
The pulse oximeter works when the device is worn on the skin and the Pulse Ox feature turned on.
So yes, it will work while free diving as long as you’re wearing it.
I am taking the liberty to 100% double check to be on the safe side too 👍🏻
@@BlackMantaPhotography So you mean working also recording pulse ox into apnea training so you can later check how it changed during the freedive?
@@juhanivaihkonenunderwater yes, if you activate Pulse Ox it runs constantly so always records while you are wearing regardless of what activity you are in.
I’m not sure if the data from Pulse Ox shows directly in the Apnea data, but have seen data from Pulse Ox directly. But will get this all checked.
@@juhanivaihkonenunderwater Hi Juhani - so after some investigation I believe that while you can have the Pulse Ox running 24/7 if you wish, it only takes readings when you are completely static.
Yeah, really can't wait to get this wet in the Philippines - that's likely to be the next real chance it gets with an impending house move and various travel restrictions over winter..!
Then again, if we both had one in the PH we could be checking each others gas :)
I hear you om the price - I know it's not cheap, but I do feel you are getting a lot for your cash.
Steps to change this are:
1 - Long press on the left middle button to enter menu.

As its name implies, it seems to control the brightness of the backlight, but is has no effect when the backlight is not on
After changing the backlight brightness (as per your instructions and as per the manual), to 100%, the display is still as dim as before once the backlight goes off
My watch face is also black background with white digital style numbers.
