Kid Chameleon (Maximum Levels) Speedrun in

- This run goes through 91 of the game's 103 levels, the most which can be visited in a single playthrough. This also includes dead-end elsewheres (ones which exit back to the previous level), which the currently published TAS ignores.
This was the result of a week's worth of frustration and madness trying to get a good time in this category. I couldn't possibly finish a run without dying at least a couple times, especially at that last lava elsewhere }:( but this was the one where everything miraculously came together. For a run this good to come in an almost 2.5 minute chunk, I would say it is my most insane personal best to date.
Key moments in the run include:
1) Surviving last part of Stairway to Oblivion. Those platforms are pretty unpredictable.
2) Decent 2nd but fantastic 3rd boss.
3) Keeping Skycutter until Towers of Blood. Requires no damage in Diamond Edge and perfect movement with invulnerability in the previous elsewhere.
4) Surviving the dead-end elsewhere off the Shimmering Caves. As Micromax, you have two chances to precisely thread yourself diagonally through a hidden steel block. Miss both, and the run might as well be over. Level's friggin hard.
There were still a few mistakes, namely missing Pinnacle skip several times, and losing Red Stealth on Secrets in the Rocks (he makes the next elsewhere super quick). Next time we'll have that all patched up!

Had vivid flashbacks of this game a few days ago, and for about 3 days I could not remember it but I found it and god it feels so weird.

loved this game as a kid, first game I ever bought with my-own money. Played hundreds of hours of this on the genesis back in the 90's. That beign said, you took paths I've never taken an even had enemies on screen I've never seen before, wtf.

My eldest sibling and I used to play this every weekend for hours. I think the farthest we ever got was Frosty Doom and Deadly Skyscaper. Watching you play is insane, and brings back so many memories. Thanks, and great job!

yeah it a cool little bug i think you have to hit the flag and crouch the same frame or something like that, but basically it changes your helmet depending on what mask you already have.

haha thank you! I actually just watched your recent netplay video. First of all, I had no idea online multiplayer for this game was a thing. Second, if you cut out the second player's time, and some death on the final marathon, you would have a fairly decent 100k trip speedrun yourself!
I could probably show you how to set it up properly, just need to be aware that it adds some latency to the controls, which in this game leads to hilarious deaths. That'll probably explain some of the silly deaths on my end. It's like Kid Chameleon: Hard Mode.
I personally like the way I play better than I see here. I take time to grab plenty of diamonds and other prizes, not always in a hurry to get to the end of each level. I have Iron Knight add a hit point(50 diamonds) when I get a chance, and Maniaxe add an extra life from time to time, and sometimes figure it's best to use other Diamond Powers. Completeness is more important to me than speed, and I'm apt to bump one block too many and lose just enough seconds to disqualify if I go for a Speed Bonus anyway.

That's a hard route. Bloody swamp is hard to pass. And a few of the elsewhere can really screw you up!
Just beat Kid Chameleon today, watching you go through the final marathon really helped me do it myself, I couldn't have done it without you lol
a new game you might like, it's called 88 heroes. in some ways it reminds me of kid chameleon, you get 88 lifes to beat the game, but each life is a completely unique hero, and they are all very well designed heroes. the order you get them in is random, and when they die, they're gone for the rest of that playthrough. It also has an 80's, 90's vibe, its just an amazing game.

The sad part of this game was the fact when we had to switch off for whatever reason, we had to start all over again. So, some levels were always played and others, almost never...
The fact that there were no save games possible impeded the player to discover the whole game.

The juggernaut powerup was always my favorite as a kid. Glad to see it have some use in this run as opposed to other runs.

Amazing to watch as always! I beat the game finally in 2020 and will eventually try to beat it again/consistently, but for now still coasting on that accomplishment. I love watching your videos to see levels, strategies, skills that I don't have yet, etc. Have you made a video or videos that show the dozen or so that weren't included in this run? I'd love to see every level of this game just to be complete and maybe play them myself. Or maybe a video of all the Elsewheres played back to back if that possible? Or a maximum Elsewheres speedrun? Just some ideas in my head lol

This is the Sega Smash Pack 2 version of the game. It’s quite difficult to get working so I recommend Kega Fusion if you haven’t tried that yet.

When facing Shishkaboss, after defeating the top head, why didn't you make use of the small space inbetween the metal blocks and the middle head to quickly kill it? I've used that in the past to destroy the middle head in a whole second.
The middle head had way too much HP for that to work in that moment; even riding it all the way to the top of the level couldn't kill it. A much faster and more stylish method to beat this boss was actually discovered like less than a month after this run and you can see a beautiful implementation of it here: www.speedrun.com/kidchameleon/run/yo4j5k1m

The specific goal of this speedrun was to beat the most levels possible in one playthrough, 91 in total. You can't visit nearly that many when taking the 100K Trip, but it is a different speedrun category and I have a run of that too ! ruclips.net/video/ExleJDPwvS0/видео.html
@@Winslinator Roger that. Thanks for making these videos. I grew up playing the game on genesis and never made it past alien isle. Half the time I got there it was five hours later and my hands were cramped and no save lol. So it’s great to watch these runs as well as the modified KC games like Ultimate and KC2 Heady Metals revenge. Thanks again!

Do you ever take the cyclone path of the deadly skyscrapers? I don't think I could beat that level without cyclone.
When I played this game casually, that was also the only way I could beat it; very hard level. Of course, grabbing that helmet in a speedrun is too slow so we have to do a far more difficult method.
