    What's even sadder about this musical is the composer eventually ended his life a few years after making this musical. Echoing Jason in a dark way. And Quiet Night At Home was the last piece of music he played on his piano before he died.

    So, I actually did a staged reading of this show at the end of my freshman year of college (I was the stage manager), and I fell in love. It's got some cringe moments, since it was meant to take place in the early 2000's, but it's a really impactful story.
    (Not so) Fun Fact: Matt's speech at the start of Jason's memorial/funeral "I'd like to start with just a... If we could take a moment... If only we were silent, or we had spoken..." is actually in Peter's nightmare from the very beginning of the musical, word for word, still said by Matt. Peter thinks it's his funeral in the nightmare, showing that Peter's worst nightmare came true, just not in the way he thought. It also foreshadows Matt's role in it all; if he had just stayed silent about what he saw, or if he had spoken in acceptance and support instead of jealousy and anger, Jason wouldn't have done what he did.

    Based on some of the lyrical and acting choices in Cross for the Priest-the desperation of "You're just a child, and things will change, I promise / You're young, you have time on your side", and the emotional weight with which that entire last paragraph from "Let the church be your spine / Don't question too much, and you'll get along fine" onwards is delivered-it's always been my Very Sad Headcanon that the Priest is a closeted gay man who's done exactly what he's advising and is trying, as best he can, to help Jason.

    • @Tustin2121
      @Tustin2121 3 года назад +14

      You’re not the first person I’ve seen say this. It’s not like it’s unheard of either, for a gay man to become a priest to avoid the expectation to marry a woman.

    Watching this was physically painful because I knew how it ended but SO WORTH IT. I was raised catholic (now Jewish) and I'm gay and I found this musical right as I was coming into both of those things and it helped so much to see a depiction of a gay catholic who never questioned his faith despite having every reason to do so

      It is interesting how we had such different reactions and responses to this show. It helped me and was pivotal in pretty much the exact opposite way that it was for you. I'm also gay, was raised catholic, and went to catholic schools. I found this show when I was newly out and questioning how I could or could not reconcile my religion and my sexuality. bare was crucial and comforting to me as I could relate to the characters struggling with religious homophobia (and be thankful that I'm a decade or two younger than them).

    I legit yelled, "Oh no, my sweet summer child! You're not ready!" And indeed, you were not ready. Glad you enjoyed it overall, despite the downer that it is. It's one of my favorite shows because it shows homosexual characters in a religious environment in a fairly neutral way. Most of the homophobia is in Peter's head (yeah, the opening part is also a dream sequence if you couldn't tell), but as you said he keeps his faith through to the end which is different from most situations like this portrayed in modern media. The language can be a bit crass (hey Nadia), but it's a decent show.

      Pretty sure Peter does not actually keep his faith in the end. If I recall correctly, the script has Peter not join in with the prayer in the final song, and I’ve seen productions where it’s quite obvious that he does not. He also said in his song to the priest that his love of Jason is the one thing that brought him close to God, implying that Jason being taken from him has also taken Peter’s faith with it (because “if there was a God, why would He take Jason from me?” sort of thing).

    Matt is such an interesting character to me, especially if you read between the lines or have seen different actors interpretations of him. He has a good heart but is so consumed by his jealousy of Jason to the point it makes him into the antagonist of sorts. Jason seemingly has everything to Matt. He gets the role of Romeo over him, he is valedictorian, he has wooed Ivy who Matt clearly has feelings for and in a way I believe he's even jealous that Jason gets Peter.
    Towards the end of Are you there, the music shifts into a playful interaction between Matt and Peter where in the productions I've seen ends with them waltzing with each other and Matt laughing asking who's leading to which Peter says he doesn't know. Matt then asks softly to Peter "Well who usually leads?" Pretty much saying a) I know about you two and b) and quite possibly Matt once again wishing he was in Jason's shoes. Because Jason even gets Peter, someone that genuinely loves him. Something Matt wants so deeply c) it could be a way of Matt saying in desperation "Well I could be your Jason". Matt may or may not have any sort of romantic feelings towards Peter but an intense desire to be needed by someone. To be someones first choice. You can hear the interaction on the album version. I have always thought that was a masterful little interaction that is so telling of his character.

    I love this musical. I was a bi boy brought up in Catholism and this show nails how it felt. I really enjoyed your reactions to this; it's fun to watch someone connect the dots and make guesses and just enjoy the music and experience for the first time. I saw you "seeing" the characters as their layers grew. They were savage and often mean, but also so vulnerable and deserving of better than most of them get.
    I love how the first song in the show foreshadows the last. The first song is a dream sequence and Peter guesses it's his funeral, but he's obviously wrong. Also, Ephiphany has the title of the musical too, for what it's worth.
    One of the most important contrasts in the show to me is how Sister Chantelle reacts to Peter being gay versus how the priest reacts to Jason. Chantelle shows how religion SHOULD embrace everyone. The priest shows how damaging it is when religion excludes and demonizes people. Peter learns to accept himself; Jason learns he's right to hate himself which leads to his overdose.
    Thanks again for this video. I hope it helps people find Bare. I think there are people who need to hear it.

    One of my favourite things about this show is that EVERY character is likeable and unlikable at the same time. Even Matt, who is arguably the Antagonist is so raw, and even though he outs Jason... You can understand where he is coming from. The one character you hate is Father (Or The Priest) but honestly if they delved into his character like they did with theo thers even then I would probably understand.

      I have never liked Matt. Not just for the outing but because his lines to me read as the guy who feels he’s been friendzoned and deserves more just because he’s been nice to someone. I get that he’s young but it has still always bothered me.

    • @thoroughbryce
      @thoroughbryce Год назад +5

      @@NSnicket I think it's also important to remember that 1) Jason is constantly one-upping Matt in everything he does, from stealing the role of Romeo at the last second to stealing the girl he'd been crushing on for ages, 2) Matt knew Jason was gay since the rave and that made him feel especially betrayed because he knew Jason could never love Ivy like he could, and 3) he sympathizes with Peter (as seen in Are You There) because they have both been hurt by Jason's actions. So while outing somebody is a truly asshole thing to do, Matt had been hurt a lot by Jason and was completely aware of how many other people Jason had hurt up to this point. Part of the reason he outs Jason because he's fed up with how much his facade of being straight has been hurting others (especially Ivy and himself).

    • @NSnicket
      @NSnicket Год назад

      @@thoroughbryce hurt because Jason is a better student and better at sports/theatre? Sorry but Jason in no way goes out of his way to take anything from Matt and you can even get the impression that he doesn’t care for his popularity so I’m with Jason on this one. Also Matt is a little weasel who thinks he has earned Ivy’s love by treating her well and complaining that after he has treated her so well she should love him back. He’s the epitome of a whiny entitled white boy.

    • @kerahbundy5705
      @kerahbundy5705 6 месяцев назад

      @thoroughbryce I mean, there's even a production where Matt and Ivy kiss at the end of Portrait of a Girl (and they're both seen hugging and holding each other up until that song), implying that they were already a couple. So, at least in the production, he has more reason to be mad at Jason. He STOLE HIS GIRLFRIEND! (at least in Matt's eyes)

    My wife has been hung up on this show for well over a decade now (even used "Plain Jane Fat-Ass" as an audition piece once), so I know a lot by proxy - and your cover analysis was SO ON POINT.
    (On the topic of "Plain Jane Fat-Ass," it says a lot about Nadia's comedic chops that she's entrusted with the Nurse, but I also wholly understand her frustration. One of my high school friends was under 5 feet tall and got thoroughly sick of always being cast as a child or a mouse.)

    Every theatre kid has that one show that changed their life. And mine was Bare: A Pop Opera. I grew up in a very catholic household. While, luckily, my parents weren't super conservative in my upbringing, I did go to a private catholic school for the first 13 years of my life (I'm 17 and in public high school now). So, I wasn't exposed to the real world. I grew up having religion class every day and mandatory church on Fridays and Sundays. Priests would come into class and say hi. We even had a faith bee (like a spelling bee, but it's theology rather than spelling). I didn't realize how much I hated it until I went to a public high school. I always suspected I was queer. But of course, I refused to acknowledge that because of the "hate the sin not the sinner" teaching. It sucked. The summer before 10th grade, I really thought I was queer. I went to a catholic conference, had a come to Jesus moment, and was like, "NOPE IM STRAIGHT! How could I ever be queer when I'm such a devote Catholic?!" Well, that didn't last long. I grew to accept myself over time. It took so long for me to actually do my own research and form my own opinions. Pretty soon, I found out how awful and oppressive the church is. It broke my heart. I couldn't believe this group I was raised in thought such awful things about the LGBTQ+ community, sex before marriage, purity, etc. I hated it. After doing my own research, I finally accepted the fact that I'm queer. According to the church, God made me perfect. He made me queer! That's what I know.
    So, when I listened to Bare for the first time, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It's a work of art that perfectly captured everything I'd gone through. While I myself have never been directly targeted like Peter and Jason were, I ALWAYS feel people breathing down my neck saying, "You have to be straight. You have to be pure. You have to be modest." I cried so much listening to Bare, not because of how sad it was, but because I knew firsthand what Peter, Jason, and Ivy were going through. I was astounded there was a musical about my life. It was shocking to me.
    Well, that was a long-winded way of saying Bare is the most important musical in the world to me. It captures my high school life perfectly.

    I saw this twice, done by high school students, some of whom are gay. It was so brave. The director had performed in the show years earlier when he was in high school. Knowing the emotional challenge of this, he asked the audience to remain for a discussion, and people were able to process the emotional heaviness of it. The story isn't true, about one person, but it's the real life experience of tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of people who feel lost, alone, and/or don't know how to be authentic because of religion, their family can't accept them, or other reasons. They were heroes in my mind because they gave a voice to people who have no voice. One performer said her mother apologized to her after the show because she had been dismissive when she came out of the closet. The music is hauntingly beautiful, the raw emotion, the emotional vulnerability, the courage of this story all has the potential to save lives. I wish many many more people would see this show.

      I need to amend something I said in the above comment about some of the performers being gay. That's not the point at all. That was a limiting thing to say. The show depicts struggles with body image, teen pregnancy, parental acceptance, and even rejection of a heterosexual character, Matt, being rejected by Ivy for someone who may be gay. (Jason isn't so sure and Ivy doesn't know at that point whether or if he is). That leads to something else I loved about the play; that it so courageously confronted all of that!

    I like how this video is actually recent. Every time I look up this musicals name, every video is old and the most recent you’ll see is 3 years ago 😅 This musical was the second one I have ever seen, but I never really understood it fully until I rewatched it on RUclips. This musical will always be dear to my heart because of how well it is of showing emotions. We know so much about the characters even if they aren’t really apart of the main cast (The ongoing couple the “I finally nailed my girlfriend” guy and the “I blinked and it was over” girl 😂 also Jason’s parents). For the end, I blame both Jason and Peter. I get Peter couldn’t wait to come out, but Jason was extremely unprepared. Especially with Jason’s constant pressure to live up to his dad’s expectations to be the straight athletic boy. Jason’s fault for reckless thinking for breaking up with Peter and getting physical with Ivy 😬
    I really hope you saw this musical again in action this time instead of just listening to the audios! It really shows you stuff like when Matt accidentally saw Peter and Jason kiss in Best Kept Secret which is why Matt is singing in Confession. This musical is so underrated, not enough people are talking about it and I hope one day I can share it with my friends!
    33:20 I’m surprised, this moment actually made me mad because I really didn’t like the Priest 😂 I remember I immediately said “I wouldn’t forgive him 😤” The musical never fails to make me have strong emotions 😅 Even relistening to the songs I still get sad. Especially Bare which is my favorite song. “The act is beginning, the audience waiting. No! Stay in this moment!” It’s sung beautifully and I like how Jason tries to bring Peter back because it literally is the last moment they’d have. Especially when Jason only talks in a past tense in this song.

    you are literally so wise be my bff i mean- this is my favourite musical, period, and i listened to it enough times already to only get emotionally affected if i'm really needing some drama to shake me up, now tho i was just on eDGE for 35 minutes, felt like i was experiencing it all for the first time again with you. i loooove your comments, i'm feeling all kinds of feelings now the most prominent being happiness that in my life i have found a) bare a pop opera and b) your channel. you're really the most genuine and nice and smart youtuber to talk about musicals out there! anyway lots of luv

    "I'm now seeing they're all villains... and not villains."
    Yeah... that is one of my favourite things about the play, none of the people are really The Villain.
    The real villain in this whole thing is fear, loneliness, and, you know, being 17 in a boarding school.
    It's heartbreaking.

    Here’s a few of my top favorite musicals that I didn’t see on your list:
    RENT (classic if you haven’t seen/heard it)
    Tick...Tick...BOOM! (Same person who did RENT, and I honestly prefer it 😂)
    Throughly Modern Millie (set in 1922 and based on Chrysanthemum)
    Repo! The Genetic Opera (not a Broadway musical, but still so amazing!)
    I love that you’re diving so far into the wonderful world of musicals. There’s such a diversity to them and you can have a song for any occasion. Also, it’s on your list, but Book of Mormon is HILARIOUS. Can’t wait to see more from you!!

    • @horrorhistory7342
      @horrorhistory7342 3 года назад

      I also echo repo!!!! And I recommend American murder song, a project band by one of the creators of it Terrance and his friend. There’s two albums, one about the donner party and one about 1816: the year without a summer, I recommend both. American murder song isn’t really a musical but it kind of is because of how it’s presented.

    I played Peter in the summer 2015. This show has such a deep personal connection to me. I grew up gay and confused while going to Catholic school and was able to really relate with both Peter and Jason in different ways. We had protestors at our performance everyday (I lived in the same city as the Westboro Baptist Church. IYKYK) During our production gay marriage because legal in the United States. This show changed my life. 💕

    I had a bootleg audio of the workshop version of this show that was I think from 2005. I think as someone who also grew up queer and deeply closeted in a hyper-religious environment, I was able to sympathize with most of the kids because they were all being told in some way or another that they were intrinsically wrong and they were hurting, and hurt kids often lash out and hurt others, ESPECIALLY in an environment like this. The worst bullies I ever had were at church and the religious school I attended. It's shitty but like. Who's gonna teach them anything else when they can't even trust their hurts to the adults around then bc the adults are CAUSING them?

    The songs are lovely, but the staging really helps with separating life vs dreams as well as public vs private spaces.

      Also (depending on the production) you can see Jason down the drug right before 'Bare', so even the break through between them wasn't ever going to be enough.

    AH I have so many words to say about this musical!! So buckle up!
    I admit that my knowledge and even my interest in theater is pretty minimal. Bare was my first exposure to musicals, and it came at the perfect time - I remember lying in bed with these songs in my headphones while everyone else was asleep, 12 years old in the midst of my own similar turmoil. I am a lesbian raised in a religious cult, and have felt the same pain, pressures, and despair as these characters. I connected so deeply and personally with the storyline of Bare that it became the soundtrack of my younger years. The ending of course was tragic but at the same time, it gave me a feeling of knowing this experience was not being survived by me alone, and that was an important takeaway for me. Personal story aside, I'm so happy to see more people appreciating this musical for all its drama, chaos, and sadness. It's a reflection of many true stories put together in such an artistic way. Your thoughts on each track were both fun and insightful! Loved that clever analysis of the cover which I had never payed much attention to. Genius! And I really enjoyed your input on the musical details too - I've always loved the return to the main melodies throughout so many tracks, they are great to play on piano!
    Did you know the writers of Bare want/are planning to do a movie? Apparently it's been in the works for some time, not sure of its progress though (late 2021 began filming). Also, the singer who plays Peter (Matt Doyle) was also in an LGBT movie adaptation of Romeo & Juliet - a coincidental tie in with the R&J themes in Bare!
    One final note - I have a musical rec for you!it's not a traditional musical, and is criminally underrated. It's audio only and features 2000s/2010s rock singers (literally Brendon Urie is in there...). It's called Razia's Shadow and is created by the band Forgive Durden. Absolutely worth a listen, beautiful otherworldly love story that I hope you'll love, or even react to! The storytelling of it is just so enchanting

    • @Barbara2.0
      @Barbara2.0  2 года назад

      I'm so sorry to hear you struggled growing up and really hope it only made you stronger. It's beautiful to know you can relate to a show in such a personal level that it helps you through tough times, isn't it? The magic of art.
      I didn't know they were planning a movie, that would be really cool to watch :)
      Thank you so much for you kind words and recommendations!
