Dear Barbara, thank you. I started Newsies, but I stopped after 15min because it was not that easy to get into the story in the beginning, but I wanted to watch it before I saw your reaction and now I am in love with the music! Thank you for giving me a reason to brighten my horizon and giving me the excitement to try something new!

I got to see the OBC (a week after they were on the Tony Awards) with my older sister (who grew up a Newsies movie fan) and our seats were literally 3 rows away from the stage... if you ever get the chance to see the show up close, take it! The dancing was incredible up close (should also mention that the moving set pieces were HUGE and a small part of me always worried it would topple over onto us when they moved forward lol) and I managed to get one of the newspapers that was danced on and thrown during Seize the Day (btw, the audience went absolutely NUTS when the song ended)... everyone was incredible and super sweet when I did stage door afterwards and I'm so happy that some of them came back to do the pro-shot (esp. Jeremy Jordan - his Santa Fe live is an experience :D)! Glad you got to react to this! :D

Once and For All is my absolute fav song musically in this show. The tension is building the ENTIRE song - it starts in A minor and you hear all these tritones in the accompaniment (one of the most dissonant intervals, which creates extra tension) which just builds up and up and up same with that fast tempo until you get the three times the ensemble repeats "once and for all" getting higher and louder each time until the song finally FINALLY resolves into the parallel major with big full chords it's absolutely FANTASTIC and I could go on about it all day

Crutchie's original actor and the one in the recording is actually Andrew Keenan Bolger, who also graduated from University of Michigan, the same place Starkid started. Plus on the non- PG side "with their sticks and their slugs" in Once and for All , slugs are bullets. They are saying that Pulitzer's goons would have shot them! Also "soaking em" means beat them up. Hence why in the U.S. at least the only songs that schools do is Seize the Day.

7:00 I was a dresser on a production of this show and I can confirm it's incredibly tiring for the dancers. We had way more instances of swings and understudies going on than any other show I worked on at that theatre, and you could smell the Tiger Balm down the hall from the chorus men's dressing room. It was really fun, and we got a much younger crowd than our usual elderly folks, but WOW it looked like it took a toll on the performers.
As for the unusual tenses when they talk - I'm not super up on the history of the dialects of New York, but it's definitely specific to that era in NYC, in lower social classes. That dialect was influenced by the huge number of immigrants who resided in New York, with Italian, Irish, and Yiddish dialects probably having the biggest influence. So I would guess the 'we is' form was influenced by some language other than English, although again I'm no expert.

Not gonna lie, Newsies is my favorite musical of all time (not even exaggerating) it really is such an amazing show and it's so much fun be in as well. I played Katherine in a summer theater production about 3 years ago and it was the most fun I think I've ever had with a role (still exhausting because I hardly had any tap experience at the time, tons of other dance experience but very little tap)
On another note. I have had a fan crush on every single newsie at least once. Something about boys who sing and dance WELL just is an almost guaranteed crush in my book. (However Spot Colon is still my fav Newsie)

This musical is great, although there is a certain irony in Disney producing a musical about the power of strikes whilst also mistreating their own employees...
Also, as far as I know, live performances of this show are increasingly using both girls and boys in the ensemble, which is also more accurate to the actual strike, which also included both male and female Newsies

It's a weird story with a lot of fantasy sequences, so as amazing as the original cast is, I recommend the Vanessa Williams cast album because there's a lot more dialogue included connecting the songs and giving context. I just discovered this channel, and this is such a great idea for a video series! I'd love it if you could react to The Scarlet Pimpernel by Frank Wildhorn. Listen to the OBC recording, and then the Encore Cast Recording. A couple of the tracks are the same, but others are sung by different actors who give them a different feel, and a bunch of the songs are in a different order, giving them a different context within the show. It's an interesting exercise to compare the choices that were made. (Also, this is only my second video of yours that I am watching, so I don't know if you do this, but it might be a good idea to read a plot synopsis before going in so you have some context. You could even read a synopsis of the book the musical is based on, which is different in a lot of details, but would be enough to give you the general idea without spoiling specifics for the show.)

I know im super late, but the reason that they all use present tense for some words is that they havent been taught proper english. They are very poor, and don’t have a proper school to go to.They use ‘is’ instead of ‘was’ cuz thats what they learned. Davey, on the other hand, has grown up with parents who taught him english. He speaks more properly compared to the other newsies, who don’t seem to understand that ‘a’ becomes ‘an’ with a vowel.
But then again I could be wrong, english isn’t my first language either lol

New Yorkers have different grammar choices and pronunciations. Instead of using “we give them a war” it would be “we gives thems a war”. It’s a really unique artistic choice in Newsies and is why I love it.

You should listen to In Trousers, it's the prequel of Falsettos and though it doesn't make much sense on its own it gives you an insight into why Marvin is the way that he is and ITS SO GOOD

I always say Sondheim took over the late 80s early 90s, Alan Menken took over the late 80s to late 90s maybe early 2000s and Lin Manuel took over the 2000s with influence from both ❤️

Newsies is one of my favorite musicals! I like the 1992 movie as well but the broadway show is a little different. I’m glad you watched the show in the end. It was SUPER frustrating to listen to you try to piece it together with just the soundtrack. So many questions that you had would be answered by just watching it.

Do you only watch American shows? Because if not I think Our House could be a cool one to watch and see the differences between American and British theatre/humour. It's a jukebox musical based on the songs of Madness and the original West End version was professionally filmed for television so you could watch the whole show, like Legally Blonde
