    They are super photographs, every credit for doing that on what is known as Black Eye Friday in the North east of England. I've only did street photography once in a smaller city up here, with a female associate, we both got challenged a few times and there was some hostility too - that was on an afternoon, god knows that it would have been like when the alcohol is flowing!

    Hey Mali, what a great watch but also brought back memories of a night in Birmingham I had about 18mths ago. This time of year, with the early dark nights & mornings, I used to go into Brum ,I live in the midlands, or up to Liverpool as I work in Warrington for some street photography. The last venture into Brum at night to take some tram shots & general street stuff I got threatened by a drunk guy, who I had noticed following me in the distance. After setting up my tripod, out of the way of pedestrians in a quiet corner, he suddenly appeared right in front of me. Calling me a pervert, paedo & other names, saying I was taking pics of women. I showed him the back of camera but it was a no good, he was after fight & said if I did't leave he'd smash my face in. I've never packed away my gear so quick while trying to calm the situation down. The 15 min walk back to the car, looking over my shoulder felt like ages. Suppose partly my naivety for going alone at night was a poor choice. Not been back on the streets since.
    Great vlog and well done to you and Gary for the restraint you both showed. 👏

    I stupidly got into it once with someone, but I was technically wrong because it wasn't a public space, it was a little strip mall which is private property. It was one of the first times I tried photographing people and I was trying to figure out my settings and how I should do it, and the subject was a guy who may have had a mental impediment and was playing the trumpet. Another man saw me looking at him and holding my camera, and trying to stay out of sight because I wanted it to be a candid shot. The other man was staring at me and I gave him an attitude. Another part of the equation is I'm a white woman and this was a mexican-american area of town, so they guy was wondering who I worked for. I ended up apologizing for my stupid attitude, and I learned a few things that day. Don't insist on my rights as a photographer, (even though I wasn't in the right that day anyway), be friendly with people, and I'm willing to erase my photo if it really bothers them. And also, have more confidence and don't try to hide what I'm doing. That's probably what got me in trouble that day, besides my stupid attitude.

    Wow you pulled all the stops out there Mali, I just hope all the other street photographers on here watch this video they might learn something! Like any other big city Liverpool is not the easiest place to do street photography some days are ok but other days there is always some mad crackpot lefty ready for confrontation. The amount of good candids really did show how well you knew your skills in this episode, if ever there is a situation where you need to forward your work to anybody then this is the episode to show them. Credit must go to Gary too for the filming of this blog. I think you handled the incident really well, and it maybe good training if you ever visit Glasgow on a Friday night! Well done Mali and Gary....

      @@MaliDaviesPhotography well it's true you know. So many of us go out to shoot fun stuff but intimidation gets in our way. A positive attitude and then similar response by subjects seems to go a long way and once rolling it's like endorphins keep pushing you forward - but often getting that movement started is tough. I wonder if having Gary with you was a driving force? I tend to be more outgoing if I have 'backup' as it were, lol. Or are you typically that energetic on your own? Anyway, I really have been enjoying the podcasts of late.

    • @MaliDaviesPhotography
      @MaliDaviesPhotography  8 месяцев назад +1

      @dennislee8253 thanks for the podcast listens that’s very appreciated as it’s so niche. I love making those and I’ve got a really good one to come this weekend.
      It’s a good question about company, in street terms it doesn’t make much difference, I just love to be out with the camera and to meet people can be interesting even if they are confrontational. Usually they have a good chat. I’ve got a couple of video where I’m out on my own but not finished editing them. I think in street photography it’s good to have company to share the excitement! Getting a shot or seeing shadows and light play or a situation open up. It would seem though that I do get quite animated and the more you do it the easier it gets. I’m definitely going to record an inbetween episode about this and give you a mention, it’s a great idea and subject to talk about 👍 stay well take care.

    Hi Mali a fantastic vlog showing the ignorance of some security guards. I had a similar experience when photographing the Manchester Christmas Markets. I was stopped by a security guard and asked if I'd got a licence to take photos of people. I told him I didn't need a licence as I was in a public place but he kept telling me I couldn't carry on without a licence. I told him I'd leave (which I did) and moved to another part of the market in a different area. I emailed the security company and explained that they needed to educate their staff regarding the laws of street photography and I received a half-hearted apology 🤔 I also posted about my encounter on one of the Street Photography groups on Facebook and I received a few replies with links to documents that explain the laws so I'll have them printed off ready for next time I'm stopped. That aside you got some fantastic images. Bold St is one of my favourite locations but I'll keep an eye out for that 🍆 😊

    Mali: I loved this! Great tack sharp images! Would love to know the average ISO you used and if you had to use Denoise software! I just got a Nikon Z-8 and I’m loving it! I love all your work and you are hanging out with a true master!!! Thanks for taking me along!

      Thank you so much for watching. Now a surprising fact about the images, most are black and white straight out of camera and no added denoise. I was shooting a lot wide open at f2.8 or f1.8 1/400 of a second at iso 1600 sometimes higher. It did hurt to give the camera back. I loved it!

      Thanks so much for watching. On this occasion using the new Nikon Zf I shot Raw and Jpeg mono straight out the camera, 90% of these images I ended up using the mono jpegs. Rare for me to do that, but the quality was superb for black and white.

    I’ve been shooting Street Photography for around 10 years and though I’ve had a couple of people moan etc I’ve never had any real hassle or arguments, when I do it’s usually from some jobsworth Security trying to tell me the law that he actually knows nothing about.

    Some absolute crackin' shots there. Particularly like the one at 13:41. Modern romance, both staring longingly into a take away box (at least it wasn't their phones). Personally I'd be more scared of the woman at 14:35 than the usual gobshite muppet you always bump into. She looks like she could turn you inside out.
    I had the 'Security Guard' treatment outside a Comicon at a conference center in the late summer; I told her politely but assertively that she was talking mince, she walked away.

    • @terryrees8574
      @terryrees8574 7 месяцев назад

      If you're in a public space you can photograph. Period. People in a public space can have no expectation of privacy. You can take photos of most things but some buildings you cannot photograph for monetary gain as they are copyrighted. I believe this to be correct. @malidaviesphotography correct me if I'm wrong.

      @@terryrees8574 so I have this problem during events where I do photos for the organiser (I'm not a pro just doing some charity a favour) where the charity then told me some people contacted them and did not wish to be in the photos and then we have to look through each photo for those people and that's time-consuming. I wonder what are the best practices for that.

    • @MaliDaviesPhotography
      @MaliDaviesPhotography  7 месяцев назад

      Yea no doubt, but you would have to adapt alittle. Focusing speed, size and weight of camera. The nifty 50mm for canon is a cracker of a lens and would make the setup alittle more discreet. Any camera will work for street, just shoot to the limitations and have fun.

      @MaliDaviesPhotography Sorry, yes, I have a Canon 90d but only have a Zoom lens for wildlife. I do have the Sigma 17-400 as well as the Sigma 150-600mm

    • @MaliDaviesPhotography
      @MaliDaviesPhotography  7 месяцев назад +1

      @KPP365 aah cool, yea a smaller lens may help and get you used to moving your body than zoom. But to be frank, the 17-400 would work. The snobbery around what should be used is rife, try your sigma and see how you get on. I personally just prefer a prime 28 35 or 50mm but have a go with what you have 👍 good luck and have fun

    I don't think photographing people in Liverpool or Glasgow is a good idea! Last time I did it in Glasgow I was physically threatened by a very annoyed drug addict who chased me. Not the best way to look after your gear. Fortunately I managed to give him the slip. The point is some of these drugs can give them a boost, try running at our age! All you need is someone to grab or dislodge your camera or lens. A bad idea! Dangerous, is it worth it? NO! The "security retard" was a seriously tricky situation.

      I’ll photograph anywhere, at the end of the day, most people are ok and if not they will eventually walk away. This guy bored me and there are police around, we spoke to them not long before this numpty came on the scene.

      Yes you handled it well, there is a high chance that some nutter will damage your camera gear. I remember street photography 40 years ago, I got chatting to some of the homeless and even sent a copy of one image to a post office as the guys didn't have an address of their own. Great stuff. But recently, very dangerous due to spice! Take care mate.
