What’s wild is that Shane said he was poor growing up, yet off-brands seem to be a completely new concept to him
Maybe he just thought he was poor bc his mom didn't give him every little thing he wanted 😂
He was probably just a pampered kid who had food/items magically appear in front of him... Never paid attention to how it got there or what it actually was - his mom just presented it to him & he was none the wiser beyond the general idea of not being as spoiled as his peers. It may have just been a concept but not a significant part of his experience growing up... He didn't have to help shopping or cooking, didn't coupon w/ his mom, didn't deal w/ the parentification of worrying about money when you should get to be a child. That is honestly the most charitable explanation I have for why he doesn't understand anything about generic brands or discount stores or drugstore dupes - which is saying something, because it still paints him as an ignorant man baby.
Remember when Shane was freaked out there there was STORE BRAND/Generic food at the grocery store?? Like, are you kidding me? He’s full of it. Also, if he was “so poor” growing up, he’d KNOW what store brand or generic stuff is. He’s just desperate. That’s all. (I cannot roll my eyes hard enough without risking injury.)
Another RUclipsr covering Shane’s videos, maybe it was Mika’s Rhetoric but don’t quote me lol, mentioned that going from poor to very NOT poor does something psychologically to you which makes sense imo. My mom when she came to the US was very good insecure, and only in the last decade or so has had more financial security and now buys TOO much food and cooks too much, we think as a sort of trauma response to not having enough. Shane’s videos lately have felt pretty classist against lower income folks, so maybe it’s like that where he’s lk targeting ‘poor people’ things? Because he’s so above it now lol (he’s also always just felt very ignorant to literally everything ever lol I feel like he’s never used google LMAO)

The wild part is that they’re not even acting embarrassed about being confused. Like for some reason this video and the comments have me thinking about learning that my family is well off even if paying for college and extensive medical bills is a strain on us.
I volunteered at a food pantry during the pandemic and was actually shocked to hear that people would line up outside for hours in 95+ degree heat to get $20 worth of food. But like after the shock came like introspection and embarrassment.
Maybe the first day on earth thing is an act for Shane but like if it’s not…he’s really missing the personal growth opportunities….everywhere…

I absolutely love that Shane and Ryland are implying that the makeup palettes getting messed up is 100% the employees fault and that the employees are purposefully selling gross products when everyone who has ever worked retail knows that customers are disgusting and filthy and messy and ruin everything when we're not looking
It was cut out in this video, which I’m not saying that this guy did it for any kind of malicious reason, most likely he just cut it out for the purpose of getting straight to the point, but Shane does say multiple times that he does not blame the employees at all, and he knows that they are just doing their job. (Not defending anyone, I just wanted to put this out there incase there are people that haven’t seen the original video)

Agreed though on the gross customers though, I used to work at a TKMaxx in the UK, customers would frequently open and test whatever they wanted if they got the chance which meant the product would have to be immediately binned. We had someone permanently stationed in that area because customers couldn't help themselves

agreed, people who have never worked retail would be shocked at how straight up gross a lot of customers are. i work at target, and i automatically damage out any returned makeup, skincare, hair products, etc. even if it looks completely unused bc you really never know and i’ve seen some disgusting stuff in the time i’ve worked there.

ive worked at a grocery store for 6 months and even i know that damaged and opened stuff sitting on the shelves is unavoidable
Here’s the thing that really upsets me about Shane’s video: his original theory is that “high-end” makeup stores (i.e. Ulta, Sephora, etc.) are selling used makeup to discount stores, but his entire video is based around discount stores allegedly re-stocking returned & used makeup. His “experiment” does nothing to prove his theory. Also if he had just, idk, *spoken* to retail workers at these “high-end” stores, he would have found out that they literally destroy the makeup in-house. My sister and friend worked at Ulta. Anything that was opened/used was destroyed by the employees. Idk their policies for unopened/sealed products. There are literally entire dumpster diving communities based around going to these makeup stores and getting expensive makeup from their dumpsters.
Makeup isn't my field but even at staples and Lowe's, if it's unsellable they just destroy it. They don't care enough about product loss to try to restock bad goods. They'll break it even further so no one can use it.
I wish they would sell these with a warning that actually it's pre-opened or something but I know they'd be legally liable but it just feels like a terrible waste to produce so much trash :/
I assumed his theory was going to be based around how some brands require written off stock to be returned so they can keep track and dispose of it. The store I worked at where I was in charge of writing stuff off didn't sell make-up, but we had to do it with certain food products. We weren't allowed to reduce the price and we couldn't dispose of them in our garbage. The manufacturers were really strict about making sure nothing left the store unless it was sold at the price we'd agreed with them.
I figured he'd found out some make-up brands had the same policy and jumped to conclusions, but no, I apparently gave him way too much credit.
yeah, i'd imagine most big companies are like this. just throwing away returned (used) products basically doesn't affect their bottom line at all, considering their profit margins. the bigger scandal should really be the amount of waste they produce, or how wide their profit margins are when production cost of each item is like $1-5

I work at Marshalls and it bothers me that they are saying “Why would they sell that” as if the store knows the condition of every single product on the shelf. If we find something that’s damaged, we get rid of it and legit throw it straight into the garbage. They’re forgetting that costumers can interfere with products on the sales floor before it’s sold
The realistic answer is "if someone buys it, they'll return it and it'll be destroyed" or "if someone doesn't buy it, they'll find it's been opened & destroy it." That star ALSO looks like it changes from scene to scene?

This could also be considered product tampering which is a criminal/federal offense.
He has to make statements that are provably false. Otherwise he's not getting sued by any makeup company or retailer.
I think the REAL reason it never got shared before is that Jeffree wasn't nearly ambiguous enough when implying it was OTHER influencer brands that were low quality doing it, so shane decided to scrap it because he was worried about being sued.
I mean the 2nd makeup box he bought's inside was clean when the returned one's inside was dirty, the edge of the returned one was also slightly ripped and the 2nd one did not have that rip. Also the star was drawn differently and placed in a different spot, this is absolutely factual and provable by Shane's own video.
He staged it with a pretty lackluster attempt and provided all the video evidence himself. The star being drawn differently is indisputable. So the fact he staged it and passed it off as real absolutely is something he could be sued for, though he purposefully did not name the store so obviously nothing will happen(and nothing would happen regardless because nobody cares). @@habeashumor9814

@@1camila234 no I'm pretty sure dupes are common knowledge, unless you meant the tampering thing, in which case that's also common knowledge. Most items even have "do not buy if tampered with" notices on them which started because someone decades ago laced tylenol bottles with cyanide and made companies begin to use packaging that would help people see if the stuff was tampered with or not.

Hey, i worked at TJ maxx! I can add some input here that I worked on processing things as they came in! In 5 years, I have never seen a beauty product of any kind come in without the manufacturer seal. Meaning it was never opened and it was never resealed! They would get in GIGANTIC legal trouble for selling used products. Any time we had makeup returned, we damaged it out.
What i will say about used products in our stores is that customers will touch things and swatch them CONSTANTLY. And our managers tell us we cant really even tell them they can't do that. We mark out when we can as we find it but Shane is so out of touch with how retail works and we dont know every little thing that goes on in our store, nor are we paid enough to care.
yeah I was just thinking, isn't the usual go to something like you have to damage it beyond use if possible as you're chucking it? Maybe that's Sephora I'm thinking of specifically but I would've guessed big companies like that would not only have to check for sealed items, they'd also have to further damage the returned used stuff and throw it out to try and prevent dumpster diving (which is a horrible thought process but I know there's one big company that definitely does it, I thought it was either TJ Maxx or Sephora). Weird side note but did you know its called TK Maxx here in the UK? I have no idea why. It's the same company, branding and all 😂
Ugh, management should set up a few designated tester products so it's not open season to swatch everything. Some locations do it, but I get that TJ Maxx isn't a beauty store so might not have the bandwidth to do that. But the laissez faire attitude some store management put on is disgusting. "Oh, who cares about tampering and stealing! As long as customers give us money, they can destroy our store and products!"
I know a bunch of people who've worked at Walgreens. They do the same there, accept they do tell customers they aren't allowed to test the products.

@@SheilaDeBonisfr, if a store is selling makeup I think they should have a tester for swatching, a lot of makeup you NEED to swatch or else you will have no idea if it will work for you. Thankfully most places that don't have a tester end up with only 1 open one that everyone uses like a tester, but other times nearly all of them will already be opened. Better to just have a tester than a bunch of opened product or people having to return them and it just gets thrown away.

This is definitely targeted to TJ. If i remember correctly Jeffree used to be obsessed with shaming other brands for "stooping low" and having stuff for sale there because it was below him. In my country (unsure if others also have this) we have tiers of dupes, even. We have First Copy dupes which are virtually indistinguishable from the authentic product save for the company seal, and then there's Second Copy, which is produced at third party plants and isn't accurate (mascara brush is different or has poor quality bristles, BB cream that is slightly off-color, etc.), plus shane being SOOO shocked at a tester palette being used (it's literally a tester!!! These EXIST ALL OVER even in fancy makeup stores!) made me roll my fucking eyes so bad

The luxury / non-luxury comparison makes me so mad. Shane swatching two red lip stains and then GASPING like it proves they are the same product is absolutely infuriating. 1 swatch tells us nothing about the quality of the formula or how long it lasts, or how comfortable it is to wear all day! Does it smear? does it pill? does it fade? All he did is act shocked that two different products are the same shade of RED!
His logic is like buying buying laptops from two different brands with the same specs and then concluding that they're similar because of a conspiracy and not because he brought the same fucking product from two different companies. What annoys me more about this "conspiracy theory" is that Shane has a vested interest in it. Considering he and Jeffree have collabed on makeup before, and the fact that Jeffree who still sells makeup is one of the largest influencers that supports Shane makes this feel more like a hit piece to try and make other makeup brands seem shady and prop Jeffrey's brand up as one of the "trustworthy" ones.

Yeah, there was a thing like that several years ago where some MLM HBA product was being pushed by using videos allegedly showing name brand hairspray or something where the label peeled off and there was labelling for another product underneath. The videos were either fake or they were just exploiting people's ignorance to the fact that sometimes manufacturers relabel existing unused overstock packaging materials instead of throwing it all out.
jeffree also used to denigrate other makeup brands for having their products stocked in discount stores, and subsequently got roasted by lots of people online when his own products started showing up there too. so his participation in this video feels like him saying "nooooo my brand isn't discounted because it's declining in popularity, it's a conspiracy!! the surplus products are getting mysteriously spirited away to tj maxx by the shadowy elites!"

I am a makeup artist, I have worked in makeup stores, I can tell you now anything that is damaged is thrown out BUT ALSO there is no way a package made of that material could be cleaned of that makeup, at all. Pigment from the shadows would stain the box and any cleaning (likely done with alcohol) would damage the box VISIBLY, so the only way they could have done this is to stage it (obviously) it's incredibly evident to anyone who thinks about it for more than 5 seconds

as someone who works at a tjx store, unfortunately no amount of cleaning the beauty section will stop people from fucking up the products. Even when there’s security stickers keeping the products closed they find a way 😭😭

My TJMaxx store's skincare and very small makeup section is disgusting.
All opened, poked, prodded with items and if you go later these products are still there trying to be sold.
I then see some RUclipsrs in their stores and it's all clean with a really good selection of products to choose from. Some people in my city are disgusting creatures.
i worked at tj maxx for about 3 years and I can tell ya, beauty has been and always will be THE messiest area. doing markdowns in there was hell.

well.. if u watched the original video he actually drew stars in 2 differnet boxes, while this video just shows him drawing into the second (dirty) and revealing the first (cleaner). not saying we should trust everything from shane, but maybe try to have some facts straight before accusing of fraud?

just like @fepit100 said, he actually did return two different palettes a pocket palette from sephora and one from Anastasia. Jarvis did edit it a bit odd so it looks like the box from Anastasia belonged to the Sephora one. The Sephora one was way cleaner in the box. However, Shane did show that both of the palettes was put up on the shelves again and he bought them, and it is the exact same palettes with the exact same stars this part isn't "fake". If this actually happened, I've no idea. He didn't show any proof that they returned it so he could've staged and actually just act like "look what I just found in the store". It all went very quickly so I'm more inclined to believe that he never actually returned them in the first place.
This is really aggravating. Shane clearly has never worked a minimum wage job. As a former Ross employee, me and my coworkers would definitely hunt for opened, used, and damaged products and take them off the floor. We try our best, but wtf you think we have all day? People do this all the time, literally there is not enough time in the workday to find all this shit around the store!

When I worked the makeup department in a big box/department store I know I always appreciated it when customers brought me opened, used, or damaged products. It would save me from extra rolling around the dusty floor. I could just throw them in a little bin and then when I finally had time later, scan them all out of inventory, give them their little tickets, etc. Obviously I can't speak for everyone, and I don't know if discount store workers (e.g. Ross) feel differently because they encounter it more frequently. I'd say general rules: just be polite and kind, and the worker will most likely know you're coming from a good place. @@shelby8101

L’Oreal owns so many companies. I learned this while working at Ulta. Just because a company owns another company, does not mean they sell the same products at both companies. Plus, the colors of those lipsticks may look the same, but the quality, packaging, and ingredients may be TOTALLY different

I am so confused about why they were so worried about returning the makeup. They were at cvs, which has a 100% satisfaction guarantee on cosmetics, used or unused. I was a beauty adviser there for 8 years and can confirm we damaged out all used make-up and i went through the shelves all the time to pull used products to damage them out or turn them into testers.

As someone who used to run the beauty section at TJ Maxx, there's literally nothing we can do about customers digging their grubby fingers into our makeup. No matter how much we police it, it still happens. I would spend hours of my day checking for fingerprints in pans and then destroying the products that had been touched. I am positive we missed some, but at that point it's up to the customer to return it if it's been used. All this to say, the products we receive are not used, or expired. And if you want to see the colors or check if it's been used, just bring it up front and someone will be happy to carefully open it for you!

I’m a licensed cosmetologist and I’ve worked in makeup a lot throughout the years and it’s just thrown in the trash. They don’t sell it or recycle it. They are required to destroy it. Doesn’t matter if it hasn’t been opened yet, it still gets destroyed and trashed if it leaves the store. They won’t even let employees take them or anything let alone anyone else who could sue them for negligence with all the pathogens that could be spread via used makeup.
Also, when it comes to similar luxury product, it’s different quality. There’s about 6 or 7 makeup suppliers for all companies in the USA and this stuff is made in those giant containers. The pigment varies in these big containers so the higher pigment stuff will go to the more expensive brands who pay a premium for the best quality while the lower pigment stuff goes to more affordable brands. Hence why when he tested that dupe, you can see the pigment is much more rich and condensed.

Also, sephoras and ultas have sample products to test pretty much everything in the store out, so there’s pretty much no reason to open up a product for sale unless you’re trying to steal it. A lot of people opening stuff in discount stores are trying to see what the product looks like vs trusting the color on the packaging, etc. that need is eliminated at higher end makeup stores
i worked in one of those discount store, and one of the task of the people working in that department was to check if the product was used. i mean ofc we don’t always know if something’s been used and we can’t control people from not testing those products. also we weren’t payed enough to check if every single thing had been used yknow

I used to work at target and occasionally worked at the customer service desk. When anyone returned makeup we would damage it out. We specifically had to put it in a plastic bag and zip tie it shut. Other damaged items that people returned would just go in a regular bin to be thrown away. But makeup items were different. We would send it off somewhere else to be properly disposed of.

I just want to say that, it's a common misconception that "oh in recycling they just burn and destroy the trash anyways so why should i sort my trash?" and throw it in the normal trash bin, but the thing is, sometimes the only thing you can do is burn it and you cant actually re-use it, but by sorting it, you can destroy the product responsibly using filters and systems to make sure that no harmful substances are leaked into nature or harm workers, or just end up in a land fill.

I've worked at Ulta for over a year, and any product that has even been a tiny bit open gets disposed. I spend multiple hours a week destroying eyeshadow palettes, dumping liters of $100 shampoo, and cutting cords on Dyson Airwraps so they CAN'T be used again. He literally could've just taken 5 minutes to call an Ulta and had his theory squashed.

I know several ladies who worked at cosmetic counters. ALL cosmetics, medication and vita mines have safety seals on the package. As we all know, you have to open the tape on the box, open the tape on the makeup, or the little seal around the lipstick and then you can get to your product. And there is even another plastic layer over powders, eyeshadows, and some lip sticks. So if a customer brings back a return and the tape on the box has not been opened, then it becomes a store sample. Or if the tape on the box was opened, but then the seal on the product was not, that also becomes a sample. But if the first seal on the product itself was broken then that item goes in the trash.
I think the way that high end cosmetic companies work is this: They have raw products such as oils and waxes that expire easily. They are even sensitive to extreme heat and cold. So when these products are within 6 months of expiration, they then sell the raw product itself on to the discount cosmetic companies. Or they themselves will begin packaging their own products under the bargain label, as in the case of YSL/Loreal. Then they place these bargain labeled products in drug and discount stores. They get the tax write off, and also the benefit of not having to pay disposal fees. Some items are not allowed in landfills, such as oils and other products that can catch fire. Also, any company can change 1 ingredient in a product and get away with duping it. For example change almond oil for less expensive coconut oil and sell almost the same product. So I see no reason to pay the high price for that luxury brand.
It's wild that he's going after discount stores, and not counterfeit makeup which is an actual issue that has the potential to be much worse for the customer. Discount stores you kinda know what you're getting into, you've gotta make sure it's sealed properly, not tampered with, etc... Counterfeit can look so close to the original but have ingredients that are sometimes not even legal to sell. That's a much cooler topic that's not punching down on overworked minimum wage employees and the people who shop in the store.

Honestly the thing with the make up boxes is even if it was the same box and not one with a star in a completely different spot, there's no guarantee that pallet inside is the same one. I used to work in a discount store that sold make up, and if we ever got spare packaging from something that was written off for any reason we'd probably end up taking the box and putting undamaged product inside - because the boxes get way more banged up than the products inside them.

I worked at Target and Kohl’s in customer service. One of the first things we’re supposed to ask when someone is returning makeup or skin care products and the like is “did you use/open this?” If they didn’t, then it’s ok to put back on the shelf since it hasn’t been used. If they did we’re supposed to throw it away because it’s contaminated

Wow. I thought Shane was going to purchase hospital swabs and swab discount makeup to see it any germs are on there. Like this is the worst possible way to run this experiment. He has so much disposable income, why not send them to a lab to get them tested so we can have scientifically proven results? This man is mentally stunted I’m so sure of it

I’m a former Sephora employee. We actually had an insurance policy for returned makeup and damaged products. It gets shipped to the company and they dispose of it. We were told that they recycle the packaging and dump the products. I’ve heard speculation that the insurance companies *might* resell to discount stores, but I honestly have no proof. Either way, I do know that the high end companies have a plan for disposing of products.
It's a major liability for them to resell and there's no logistical benefit for the third party to do that considering how product is shipped. Products are separated by flammability and type so they can be properly disposed of. Only folks that are trained to separate can do it and it's shipped off by Operations. I'm a current employee and sometimes things are so damaged or get damaged further after being tossed around in bins.
The more likely conspiracy here is that they're lying about the recycling part and it actually just ends up being dumped in a landfill somewhere in South East Asia.
I previously worked for Ulta. All used products may be returned with a receipt but ARE destroyed, I had to do it personally several times. Lipsticks are sliced out of tubes, palettes are cracked and broken, tubes are emptied and thrown away with regular trash. Flamable items are sorted separately and disposed of in accordance with local laws. Companies don't want you to get their products without paying their set price. They're not reselling anything.
Yea. Did you notice how weird it was that Jarvis was acting like Shane's experiment was some horrible, unethical thing to do? I can't find anyone commenting about it, but I feel like he really misunderstood that whole thing. He was implying that intentionally returning a used product could negatively affect other consumers, but the entire point is that the store shouldn't be putting used items on the shelves to begin with. It's like he thinks that it's against store policy to return used items and that Shane was pretending they weren't used, but that makes no sense, because the whole experiment relies on the fact that the store accepts used products as returns. If the employees didn't know the items were used, then it wouldn't be some conspiracy related to stores knowingly selling used items, it would be about consumers tricking stores into accepting used items.
Idk it just really bothered me that Jarvis was making such a big deal about returning used makeup in order to see if it would end up back on the shelves. It's bothering me that I can't find anyone else talking about this. It can't just be me who disagrees...
Okay anyone that has ever bought makeup will know that most stores will have an unpackaged display/test option for people to swatch on their skin, usually hands or arms, to see how it looks. Those test ones are not taken by consumers and they are not used directly on people’s faces. Unsanitary as it may still be, it is nowhere near what they are trying to push. Granted, any part of them potentially opening the packaging is cut out (which makes it feel more suspicious imo), and it may vary place to place or product to product, but this feels like important information to leave out.
Anyone that has ever worked retail where makeup is sold knows perfectly well its customers that open, test, and damage things once they are on the shelf.
I work at Target and our policy for makeup is literally: If its broken we sell it on clearance, if its a return we have an entire process where we have to ask them "has this been used, was it damaged when you bought it etc." and also, most of the destroyed makeup is 90% of the time TESTERS that WE put out for customers to use. We do NOT sell testers to customers and will throw them in the trash once they have been utterly destroyed or can't be sold anymore.
Edit: to clarify, we do not sell makeup that has been opened or used. We will accept returns due to store policy but that makeup is typically thrown away after refunded. HOWEVER, If the product was returned the same say it was purchased and the product is completely sealed (I.e, Shrink wrapped + intact carboard) we will put it back on the shelves. I live in Australia so policies in the US will differ.
i also work at target and at our store we have to destroy all makeup returns, even if it hasn't been opened
I live in Australia so Its probably different elsewhere but I think some stores do it here while others it depends what the product is ie, nail polish or completely sealed pallets

It definitely wasn't the same star. Did anyone else notice that the palette they showed getting ruined was clearly a different palette from the one they bought the next day? When he draws the star at 16:53, the inside of the box is pretty dirty with makeup dust. The one that they bought and ripped open at 19:36 has a completely clean box. There's no way that the inside of the box somehow got completely cleaned after they drew on it. So either they contaminated and returned multiple palettes (essentially guaranteeing that someone would buy a palette that they contaminated), or it was fake, they bought a new palette, obviously didn't find a star, drew a new one on, and staged the dramatic reveal later.
He bought two different makeup packages and drew a start in both, one was clean, the other was smudged. In this video he makes it seem like the one in the start is the same Shane ripped open at the end, it's not.
@@anominize5397 Exactly, which begs the question: did he return both palettes to give himself a higher chance of buying one that he had contaminated among the many on the shelf? This would mean that there is at least one more palette that he ruined still on the shelf that some stranger is going to end up buying.
Or is it all staged? Is the palette that he ripped open one that he never returned at all, and he's just lying about finding it on the shelf in the store? In that case, he essentially framed this discount store of selling contaminated cosmetics. No wonder he was afraid of getting sued, because lying and essentially framing the store is something that could probably actually get him sued (and likely would if he did it to a larger brand store and not a discount store).
Not sure about other stores but where I work, make-up can't be returned unless it is a faulty item or something. It's similar to underwear or swimmers, most stores I know of don't allow those items to be returned because of hygiene issues. I don't believe it was returned for that reason, plus, wasn't the original packet dirty inside? The one Shane had after was clean.
As someone who used to work for Target, customer’s opening makeup products is incredibly normal. People don’t care if it’s not supposed to be opened if they want to look at it we can’t really stop them for doing it but we were told not to let them buy it if it was open.
When I did do customer service for Target, they were extremely hell bend on making sure that make up, baby formula, electronics, and medical items were never put back on shelf’s even if they weren’t open. It’s more of a safety concern then anything that Shane thinks it is 😂
Shane and Jeffrey are appalling. And yes, you can get sued. I'm an attorney, if you do what they did, take products, open them, touch them, mark them and then put them back on the shelves you can get sued.
It is not the responsibility of the consumer or manufacturer to test a store this way. A customer could claim that they used one of the opened products and then refer back to the video where they talk about licking the products and putting them in their asses and given the reputation of these two an argument could be made that the products were adulterated to some extent.
I'm not sure how successful it would be and in all probability that type of lawsuit would be settled but it could be brought.
Standing in a court room accusing Shane of giving you pink eye for having put the makeup pallet in his ass is a crazy scenario that I would be just elated to witness
I feel like “what is the action they want?” Is a great way to summarise the problem with Shane’s videos. He always brings up a problem/issue that most people know about and make a big deal about it but he never presents solutions.
While we're on the subject of how understaffed and overworked employees at discount stores can't always keep up with auditing their shelves: It is really important to check the expiration dates on things you're looking to buy from these places. I've seen former dollar store employees talk about how hard it was for them to keep up with throwing out expired food and how sometimes the higher ups would get angry at them for "wasting" product when they did hunt it down and toss it instead of leaving it up to be sold expired.

As someone who has worked in this store, allbeit in Germany: it is almost impossible to keep people from just disregarding all signage and tapes and just ripping open the make-up... BUT we did not accept returns for any cosmetic products, earrings and some of course food items

I worked at Ross for 5 1/2 years and we NEVER resold returned makeup. We threw that shit out immediately.
Also, like.... if makeup gets tossed into a box with other stuff and transported on a truck, it's gonna look fucked up and grungy. We had to throw out perfectly good makeup sometimes because it was complety broken.
Which is ironic because the DC would just send us (Ollie's Bargain Outlet) all the damaged ones they noticed before shipping out to other stores (Ross, Marshall's, Wal-Mart, the usual suspects). As long as the package was 90% in tact they gave no shits and we'd basically make the call of what to mark off as too damaged or salvageable, the amount of things perfectly secured on the truck yet blatantly broken before it ever left the distribution center was a bit ridiculous. I get we would sell dinged up shit for a "low low price" but come on, a microwave that looks like someone kicked the glass in is a bit overboard. God I'm so glad I don't do that kind of work anymore, 2 years of POS, 3 of freight flow supervisor/warehouse manager, and 1 of store manager was enough for a lifetime. I mean who walks around with shit coming out of their pants and just flings it like they're kicking off a shoe, _seriously?!_ PTSD, man. :|
now, i expect corporations to do everything to save a penny, no matter what damage it might do to their employees or customers. thats WHY this conspiracy is so fucking stupid. makeup goes on your face - on your eyes, lips...some of the most sensitive skin on your body. the danger of contaminated products giving a customer conjunctivitis ONE TIME is not worth trying to save 34 cents worth of eyeshadow. the second a customer had a complaint, these drug stores would sell out sephora and ulta and whatever as the suppliers of faulty makeup. why would any business ever bear a responsibility they could pass on? and because of that, why would these big brands EVER expose themselves to that risk?
And then paying all the staff off so they don't tell anyone. Or paying a lawyer to draft NDA's
10:39 that’s 100% a test pallet they put out so you can see how the colors look on your skin. You swatch them on your hand. They also give you q tips to swatch with.
I’m just a casual consumer and know that. Can’t imagine selling a whole make up collection and still being confused going into a Sephora or ulta.
I work at a popular store that happens to sell make up along with just about evrything. When someone returns make up, if it is unused, we might put it back on the shelf. It has to be un used, un opened, and not damaged in any way (usually its returned because someone didn't know they had a duplicate at home, but it is still rare for make up to be 100% un opened and un tampered when returned).
If it is damaged, it is thrown away or taken home by a cashier. If it is used usually it will get thrown away. It depends on the discretion of the cashier or shift lead.
Either way. Customers are not paying for make up that has been used or damaged. And there is no discount store, as a cashier we are the ones who throw it away, or mark it in the system as having been thrown away before taking it home.
