      @@Fluterra I've had PDK on my 981s. With the GTS4, I obviously have the manual. The Torque curve is very strong from 2-2,500 rpm, that is why you don't have to wring the hell out of it in every gear. I'm still running in, so haven't taken over 4k when the screaming engine / exhaust note really starts, but it is already beginning to show it self from 3500-4k. So - unless you've actually driven one, there is no point having an opinion I'm afraid. I was worried with all the talk of long gearing, but as Harry says, it really isn't an issue and given you can do 80+ in second, real overtaking at near legal speeds is always superb.

    I just picked up mine yesterday with manual in SoCal and now getting PPF/CC. Between this video and SavageGeese on the GTS 4.0 there was zero hesitation when I ordered it in February as I've been eyeing one of these for quite some time. And this may very well be the last of the breed which makes it even more special. Can't wait to pick it up and go straight to the canyons.

      Thank you! These are exactly my thoughts about this fantastic sports car!
      All these annoying "critics" about the gearbox, mostly coming from people who have never driven or will never drive or own this car, is totally ridiculous!!! Just keyboard warrior clowns, but nothing more... LOL!
      A lot of crazy people are just commenting and criticizing about things, they really have no fucking clue!
      The 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 maybe is the best (kind of "still affordable") open sports car on the planet, period! But sadly too many clowns are still raging about the 718 Spyder/GT4 and GTS "gear box and gear ratios"... Hahahaha!!! This is almost too funny.
      The manual transmission/gearbox of a 718 GTS 4.0 is the most satisfying thing you will find in an open sports car/roadster, because it fits perfectly to this car.

    I have the 718 Spyder and feel compelled to back Harry up on this.. the gearing, long though it may be, is nowhere near as problematic as most other reviewers make out. The torque more than makes up for it and I manage to use gears 1 through to 4 quite easily on a series of back roads. On the subject of MPG.. I've regularly seen 34 mpg average on A roads.. 718 GTS, GT4/Spyder.. you can't go wrong! Great review!

    • @bobpleau
      @bobpleau 2 года назад

      For me it's no problem at all. Though the torque numbers seem modest, the reality is that there is plenty of torque, even at a low 2000 rpm. And it makes sense with six 4"ø cans traveling a 3.1" stroke... those are V8 muscle car pistons.

    • @JackPickle
      @JackPickle Год назад +1

      Totally agree. I also own a 718 Spyder. Utopia - could the gears be slightly shorter, of course. But that is splitting hairs. I am enjoying every minute with the gearbox in these cars and more so than my 981 GTS PDK. Even if Porsche reduced 2nd to 70mph, law breaking speeds are still very close. The key as Cowan states is the torque. It almost feels like there is a small turbo on the engine! This all results is fun short shifting and the ability to pull in any gear. GTS 4.0, Spyder and GT4 are very hard to beat. Mine is a keeper car given NA ICE is a dying breed

    Harry seems to like this car as much as I like my new to me 97 Miata. Miata, the best British Sports Car ever built in Japan. I just turned 70 and a young man still resides inside this old body. I hadn't driven a sports car in years, and I love this Miata so much I've neglected my BMW motorcycles for a couple of months now. It's just so much fun to drive on twisty roads, it's hangs a corner with a tenacity I'm not accustomed to. I retired from stock car racing 15 years ago, I was still fast, but not as fast as I used to be. It took me more time to process, I was a step slower. I bought a BMW motorcycle and fell in love with dragging parts in the corners, and my dog loves the rear seat. If I hit the lottery I'd buy that Porsche, but I don't play the lottery, LOL. I still run my auto repair shop, maybe when I sell the building I'll get a used Porsche in 15 years. PORSCHE, Proves Only Rich Suckers Can Have Everything.

    Great video, great car.
    A couple of thoughts:
    1. Porsche have put amazing engineering into the modern 911 to make the rear engine location work, handling-wise, and not kill its drivers with snap over-steer. The Boxster benefits from all that engineering expertise AND has the engine in the right place for a sports car.
    2. The reason the GTS exists is precisely because of the attitude that Harry expressed where he said he wasn't interested in the 4 cylinder 718s. A lot of people shared that attitude (including me when I heard my first 718 at the Porsche factory) to the extent that here in NZ they were discounting new ones and the price of second hand 981s shot through the roof. A lot of people really love that flat 6 and are totally unimpressed with that farting 4, irrespective of how good it actually is as an engine. There's something about that flat 6 howl when you give it some welly...

    • @TassieLorenzo

      2 is a good point, but seems to completely ignore the important role of EU CO2 fleet emissions limits? The rules are specifically designed to reduce the sales of big gas-guzzling 4.0L ICEs (and provide a seamless transition to electric by 2032) after all, regardless of it being Porsche's bread and butter and what Porsche customers want. Wouldn't a nice 660cc sportscar like a Honda S660 fit the philosophy of treading lightly and minimising emissions better? :)

    After driving hundreds of cars over the last few decades, I honestly believe my 981 Boxster is one of the most complete sports cars ever made. I suspect it'll eventually be replaced with... another Boxster. Great review, Harry!

    Being a 997 C2S coupe manual owner for the past eight months, and being a fan of analogue rather than digital when it comes to cars, I have struggled to imagine what my next car would be. Now I've followed Harry for a long time (I purchased the first issue of evo and appreciated the content there as a teenager) and watch both his channels, so I trust his opinion: I guess I've found my next car! Maybe in a couple of years' time after I've enjoyed the 997 some more.😄
