The hypocrisy of removing Sokka's sexism is INSANE. The entire point of Sokka being sexist is to show that _sexism is wrong,_ and yet they removed it because "sexism bad." Its OKAY to show sexism if its for the purpose of discouraging it... And then they go and depict Suki in an even more sexist light, by making her instantly fall for Sokka based on looks alone, and her whole worldview is changed because she met a man. In the original, Suki taught Sokka a life lesson... In the remake, Sokka mere existence taught Suki a life lesson (somehow). And ON TOP OF ALL THAT, they still showed the Northern Water Tribe as misogynists! The real reason they made the change is because they were TERRIFIED of depicting any of the main characters with any form of flaw. They were worried people wouldn't like one of their main characters if he had to learn from his mistakes. >:/
God forbid showing one of the main characters with a flaw born out of some wrong view of themselves or the world being worked naturally as the show goes on. "Modern Audiences" cannot grasp the concept of characters not being complete paragons of good and evil.
@@TheTruestZero Your final statement about how the audience could not comprehend that characters being flawed and having both bad and good traits is inaccurate with how many people have complained about this change. Nobody wanted this.
20:01 They also need to consider that Aang is just a 12 year old boy. I mean, sure in the original, Aang was more mature by the end, but he's still just a child and those pitstops helped him grow as a person. They needed to let him be a kid. Air represents freedom for crying out loud!
@@GIGio_Official Sokka can't overcome any negative flaws because he has none.... Aang decided to give a monolog about being a fun-loving, lackadaisical, goof instead of... actually being that way.... Katara got her anger issues bloodbent right out of her... along with the rest of her personality.... We got late game Zuko and Iroh at level 1... so there's nothing for them to grow into... Even Azula I a victim of this mindset to a lesser extent.... The show not only introduced her early, but brought her hidden internal conflicts out and broadcast them through a loudspeaker.... Come to think of it.... they even softened Ozai's edges a bit... And Bumi was done extremely dirty... I'm worried for Toph....
It’s not just Netflix. A lot of Hollywood writers have been doing this for a while now (especially with female characters, but all characters get the treatment a bit). The concept of a character doing something offensive because they are unaware of the offense they are causing, is a completely foreign concept to writers today. With the character like Azusa (she’s a fan favorite so she has to be in on the action right away), we can’t allow her to be the cold evil she initially appears to be. She has to have her reasons from the get go or (they think) the audience will be turned off by her (ironically the opposite is probably more true).
@@KyLewin I can't sign off on the first half, but the latter seems to be unfortunately true.... The problem with the Netflix adaptation of Avatar seems to infect the entire cast, including side/ background characters.... Even characters like Azula and Ozai.... But extending that criticism to all of Hollywood isn't justified... neither is claiming that it's a problem with female characters specifically....
Love how your breakpoint was when the ruined Uncle Iroh. Also, that moment where the camera focused on the female water benders during the attack reminded of the MCU girl bosses' moment in Endgame for all the wrong reasons.
@gravityhero2227 me: (takes a deep breath) Alright writers, you may choose anything in this room to be your punishment for what you did to my boi. Writers: We'll choose your fists. Me: (cracks knuckles) Wrong choice!
@@GoodNeutralEvilChaos Unintentionally Unsympathetic: The live-action's version of King Bumi has him take on a more realistic perspective on the unintentional consequences of Aang's disappearance and has undoubtedly suffered through many of those consequences himself. With that said, he unjustly blames Aang as much as the Fire Nation for the state of the world even while knowing what happened to Aang, and then forces Aang to either kill Bumi or himself as a way to "teach" him to make a Sadistic Choice as the Avatar.
“Yeah, yeah, an ancient art unique to our culture, blah blah blah. Look, I'm just saying that if I had weird powers, I'd keep my weirdness to myself.” - Sokka
Understandable they have to cut bit of the cgi for budget wise But Momo and Appa don't even feel like characters that we all loved, they're nothing, appa is just transportation and momo doesn't even seem to feel like in any of the episodes even rewatching it twice they don't feel like anything.
The biggest offenses of the Netflix adaptation is the inconsistent bending rules and the ending. Like Aang can legit fly, but it is never brought up, or how the firebenders can just one shot kill by burning them alive? and other fire blasts you can just walk away from with no damage? Like wtf? Also, what is the point of including the cave episode if you are going to cut out the entire romance between Katara and Aang?
And I have heard a rumor that they are actually doing their romance. They are so all over the place trying to retcon and fix this that I will be very surprised if the next seasons aren't a shit fest.
Aang not learning how to waterbend kills the entire purpose of book 1 being water cause not once he learns waterbending with katara i thought for the netflix version he can be hesitant at first and then learns and bonds with katara plus the friendship between them didn't really stick
That's the choicr i just couldn't understand. They could've overlooked anything but they chose that?? Or something happened on set that we don't know about.
I really like your analysis; they concentrated so much on visuals and story beats, they completely gutted the characters. That and the god-awful exposition dumping dialogue made me drop this show after episode 2.
They banked ENTIRELY on special effects, not on the bending, the EFFECTS. Bending is an art form, and they sucked all the art out. It's basically the other extreme Shyamalan did. Where he put everything into the dramatic body movement and basically had NO actual elements moving around, they put everything into making rocks fly around and forgot the actors are supposed to be doing MARTIAL ARTS. You can see it REALLY clearly if you pay attention to the people and not the effects. They do Move Key frame Move Key frame Move Key frame. The actors are just hitting queues so the CGI team can layer effects over them as easily as possible. Because of course more dynamic movements are harder to work around effects wise, so they just sunk the budget into the effects and basically cut out the actual choreography entirely. That's an entire facet of the show just neutered. Then of course they fucked up, everything else, as well. It's pretty clear they're not REALLY fans of the show, and people need to stop pretending references proves they are actually fans that just made some mistakes. They stuffed references into every part of the show for the same reason they pumped so much money into the effects, so they could put in as little actual effort as possible.
Some people don't look too deep into this stuff or haven't seen the original in a while. But when you watch the two back to back the difference is night and fucking day.
The people who like this show are people who did not watch the original show I feel. You'd have to be crazy to think this show is anything but terrible
the funny thing is nickelodeon already did a really good job of balancing the tone. netflix was so worried about how they're going to balance being a lighthearted children's show with genocide, but nick did a better job of it in the work they adapted. like the scene where aang realizes the air nomads really are dead - in the original show katara comforts him by saying she and sokka are his family and they're always gonna be there for him and she shows she can relate to him because she has lost someone she cares about too. it's a nice genuine scene and you can understand why she got through to him. in the netflix show, katara's like aang it's ok to lose people because that's when you find out how strong you are (??) which is an insane thing to say in general but especially more so to a kid who literally just found out his entire people got genocided. and it kind of leaves you thinking like.... why is aang ok with this? because if someone said that to me i would strangle them. i've lost loved ones and if someone i just met earlier that day came up to me and said it's ok because now i can find out how strong i really am i would punch them in the face. what the fuck. that's doing the opposite of handling tough themes with care. edit: frankly aang being super serious and depressed about his duty as the avatar right from the start doesn't even make sense. if aang is truly supposed to be a silly goofy kid before the ice, he needs to be a silly goofy kid after the ice too. that was basically just a nap. natla aang is depressed right from the start. instead of actually being a goofy kid, when he sees other kids playing he just smiles sadly about how he used to be a goofy kid too once, which is not really what an actual child would be like. i hate to point to original show scenes, but the original show scene where they go penguin sledding quite literally does this way better. katara says "i havent done this since i was a kid" and aang says "you still are a kid" which in two lines of dialogue illustrates that katara has had to grow up too fast because of the war and losing her mother, and aang hasn't and still acts like a kid his age. natla has the characters monologuing and expositing about what kind of people they are all the time but the original show which actually had love and care put into it and natla is just a cash grad written by people who were either just there to collect a paycheck or overruled by higher ups at every turn
I knew it was gonna suck immediately. The bending looks like ass. The SPECIAL EFFECTS look good, way better than that OTHER abomination, but SPECIAL EFFECTS are not BENDING. Bending is an art form, and this show completely lacks the attention to detail that the cartoon had in spades. They're banking entirely on the special effects to cover their shitty choreography, and sadly it mostly worked. Then there's the actors. NO. Sure they LOOK good enough, but looks aren't everything. I saw the set photos of the show, and NOBODY was smiling. Not ONE person, not even Aang. It was ALL dour faces, the same expression across every character, except Katara who for some reason just looked bored while she was waterbending which makes no sense at all. I knew this show would have garbage writing, they would make changes to the original that made no sense, they'd PUMP this show just FULL to bursting with FAN SERVICE in order to distract from how awful the show actually is, and the show would be completely missing the optimistic charm of the cartoon. And I was 100% correct, this show is TRASH. Straight to F Tier, do not pass Go, do not collect 100 dollars. They made massive changes to many beloved character, Bumi and Iroh are both unrecognizable as characters, they made ZUKO a goodie fucking two shoes from the very beginning despite how much that ruins his ENTIRE POINT IN THE SHOW, they introduced Azula WAY too early and her and her 2 friends are just ATROCIOUSLY cast, they don't even look like the characters at all. Especially not Ty Lee, JESUS what did they DO to her? They kicked out Roku ENTIRELY so they could force Kyoshi into the show both stealing away Aang's character development AND agency while they were at it, then they just shoved Avatar Kuruk in there too as MORE FUCKING FAN SERVICE and once again ignore Roku's existence. But, hey, it's not like it's LITERALLY Roku's fucking bloodline and best friend's bloodline that are at god damned war right now!!!! They inserted a bunch of lore around Ko that was completely unnecessary because MORE FAN SERVICE even if it bloats the story. I just hope they don't get a second season so they can't ruin Toph too. They'll probably make her an unlikable bitch while also casting a girl that can't act because they think strong wahmen is just being a dick and not letting anyone tell you otherwise. Honestly the show would be better off if they went the Ember Island Player's route and for Toph they just cast The Rock.
I remember one youtuber being mad at people calling it ass right away before it released because of the "no sexism" and "game of throne fans" and his video aged badly
They introduced Azula wayy too early in my opinion. I watch so many reviews on the live action and your one has to be one of the best one. You deserve more views. You explain very well for why aang wanting to leave permanently makes it more painful for him and guilt and also idk why they show us sir Normads getting wipe out. We didn’t need to see that
The casting of Azula was wrong too. Azula is supposed to be one of the biggest highlights of the entire story and this version of her made me wanna cry with how bogus they did her.
They made Azula like Zuko. A bit of a cry baby and throwing tantrums... Which is nothing like Azula at all. It was honestly disappointing because I love how we don't see how Azula truly feels until the final when she has a mental breakdown. The live action just goes ahead and shows us exactly how she feels while taking away Azula's mask of perfection and confidence. @@Christo_Trismegistus
One thing I want to point out that a lot of reviewers skip (for decent reason as it is a small issue but I feel VERY representative of the problems with the live action remake) is HOW Zhao needs to kill the moon spirit. In the original, the spirits are explained to have simply remained in the human world when the spirit and human world separated to benefit man kind, thus leaving them mortal. Short, sweet, not many areas to take offense to or dig plot holes in. In the remake, despite having the guideline of the original show, they change it so Tui and La ONLY come to the mortal world 1 day a year, being vulnerable ONLY during this day (meaning they DONT decide to either A. Delay their visit to when the Northern Water Tribe ISNT under attack or B. Throw in their lot with the Northern Water Tribe). The spirits are ALSO still immortal to human weapons and bending, requiring a second muguffin to be introduced, Kuruk's knife, for the sole purpose of killing one of the spirits and to allow Kuruk to alert Aang that someone is coming with his old knife and thus run to the oasis. The gang NEVER had any chance to try and deprive Zhoa of the knife nor do they learn about it until Zhoa is already landing in the spirit oasis on a war balloon. Even later if you count that only Sokka is there when the war balloon lands and Aang, the one who knows about the knife, doesnt show up till Zhoa is litterally 10 seconds from stabbing the fish with the magic knife. Something that didn't need to happen in the original, as the gang was already heading BACK to the spirit oasis due to Yue's connection to the moon spirit. So they add and change details that just muddy the water for no reason.
It’s ironic that the creator says he didn’t watch the movie and yet repeated nearly EVERY single mistake that was made there except the fact that the cast is mostly accurate in terms of appearance. But other than that, every single mistake from the movie is made with this show. From the lack of humor, the wooden acting, the rushing and terrible pacing, the overly serious tone, the pushing together plot points that don’t work together, to the godawful dialogue and characters acting completely out of character and ruining them as a result… The show is just as bad as the movie and you can’t change my mind. And as we learned the hard way with Korra, you cannot tell stories from this universe in an effective manner in a short format. I honestly struggle to find anything nice to say about this show. It just pissed me off that much.
I feel you brother. The only thing this show has is its visuals, but in order to enjoy them, you got to turn off your brain or the context of what's happening with give you a fucking conniption.
I didn't like how it looked, apart from the bending itself, the clothes look too clean and the scenery looks like magic, I think it's the lenses they used, the focus point seems to strong and harsh and everyone looks round like a biscuit
You are one of the funniest reviewers on this platform. You put a lot of time in the thumbnails with me wanting another video just days after it comes out. I'm really wondering what your next videos will be.
What they did to Sokka or what they did to Katara? How they altered Aang's character or how they altered Zuko's? The way they handled relationships or the way they handled the mythology? It's practically a contest in picking which unnecessary change hurt the show the most. (Or at least, which one drove me the most crazy...) If they were this bad with the character's personalities, I shudder at how badly they will blow it with Toph...
If they were too scared to show mild allowed-on-Nickelodeon sexism that got quickly resolved, then hoo boy. Toph is gonna be butchered to hell and back.
52:07 , this is not Ang, "the same guy who learnt from paku to then secretly teach Katara at night, since the goats like that, to then be caught red handed point blank by paku leading to more later conflict" this Ang does NOT agree with Paku, sooo who is this Fraud !!!!! :[
Amongst all the things that bothered me, the one that bothered me most was rewriting Aang not to bolt from his responsibilities but making him "go on a stroll" while the Airtemple was destroyed. It's an important characteristic of Aang to avoid difficult situations by bolting (one he never truly learns to abandon as we see right before the series finale when the gAang pressures him into unaliving Ozai and he, again, ditches. Or earlier when he burns Katara and runs off to hide, etc.). It's his "flaw" he has to deal with and the guilt he has to carry. I'm not saying he's a bad person because of that and in the end he fulfills his duties, but still. He prefers avoiding conflicts and difficult situations. So making him "go on a stroll" doesn't have the same impact on him, the world and his progression throughout the story. Even more, pwople being mad at him and claiming he ran away (looking at you, Bumi) doesn't make any sense in this case because he simply didn't run away. People are being unnecessarily cruel to this kid in this show. Edit: oh and another huge disappointment was Katara. She's been my favourite character because I identify a lot with her. I'm also the "mother" of my friend's group, I'm more mature and responsible. But I can also joke around and do silly stuff when I'm comfortable. And I'm also very passionate about justice. So having Katara be this... Bland... Was a such a let down. I don't want to bash this young actress, but I feel like she wasn't the right fit at all.
"We wanted to appeal to adults too!" Okay, and the OG appeals to adults just fine. And that one had the cartoon element. Netflix is like a bad ex that doesn't want to admit their own faults
@@GIGio_Official weirdly enough, this is the one aspect I think the movie does better. the costumes, I mean. they aren't 1:1 to the show like these are, but they actually feel like they'd be worn every day by regular people. the show's just read as cosplay to me. thats my ONLY compliment for the movie to be clear haha
@@GIGio_Official The costumes are not even that great. They are too bright, they looked unsuded. The movie actually did better costumes even Aangs arrow looks rediculous
@@ONEPEAKFRFR Let's just say if you think they changed alot of things unnecesarily, made the world smaller, characters stupider and basically everything and more said in all these atla remake critisism videos then fate blows it all out the window and goes above and beyond to not even resemble winx club at all, it might as well have been a different show, the only thing they kept in its full orginal is some, not even all of the characters names, not to talk of the characters themselves, techna isn't there at all and for some reason (a whitewashing attempt went wrong) we have terra, flora's very white cousin in the group and flora nowhere in the 1st season then shoehorned into the 2nd as some sort of apology. If you're more of a casual fan then you'll probably appreciate it for what it is (a riverdale fairy edition revamp), if you are even half of a diehard fan then like majority of us you're gonna be very offended.
Let's just say the Powerpuff girls live action would've been worse if it wasn't so bad even the detached cretins in Hollywood thought it was a bad idea
Here's an idea, make 1 book, 2 season. Pacing will be great, more seasons, more money. You'll have 6 seasons of a great show. That's around 6 years of content.
I think the problem there lies in where would you break up the season. Season 2 they cut break it up after Appa is taken and Season 3 can be after the failed invasion, but season 1. I don't know where they would cut it.
@GIGio_Official i would break the 1st season, just fun and games, introductions of characters, and the world. Ending it with the revelations of the comet. Starts with low stakes, then build it's way up.
where netflix went wrong was in creating this adaptation. didn't understand the characters or the story so they just looked at them on a surface level and went with that. also making Azula strong wahmen rather than menacing psychopath fire bender with miliseconds of character depth late in the series. they should have left it alone if they were going to butcher it so badly
45:48 that makess the war all the more intensse on the orginal, as when we see the room aang's mentor died in, we see that he suffocated all of the soldiers there before he died himself
Showing *that* scene in live-action would've been AWESOME -- salvaging this plot divergence a bit...but no. In N-ATLA, there's no final stand where Gyatso vacuums out all of the air to kill himself along w/the attacking fire benders; instead, Sozin opts to broil Gyatso.
@@Jp63a The original AtLA had Gyatso's remains surrounded by the remains of Fire Nation soldiers, thus a room-level variant of what Zaheer did to the Earth Queen was implied (or a reasonable head-canon guess to make based on presentation). But Netflix's AtLA (N-ATLA) didn't give us that final stand (which would've at least justified starting the show w/the Southern Air Temple vs. the Katara & Sokka meet Aang scene), but instead had Sozin burn Gyatso to death.
its bad enough they changed Aang's motivation to fly off, leading to his disappearance, but then to have the audacity to change Bumi from being Aang's only connection to his past & a source of support... into someone who is bitter and angry at the avatar for abandoning the world WHEN IN THAT VERSION AANG DIDNT EVEN DO IT ON PURPOSE??!! You can't have it both ways Netflix!! You cant make Aang's disappearance an accident and then turn around and have Bumi blame him for it!!
Exactly! That bothered me so much! It didn't make any sense to make Aang not actually run away, but people still blaming him as if he did. Also, that's Aangs character flaw - he ditches when he wants to avoid conflicts. And that's his arc in the original series. To no longer avoid conflicts (even though he still does sometimes - right before the finale when the gAang pressures him into unaliving Ozai and he, again, ditches).
@PaddleboardingFL I mean... You technically can. Bumi doesn't know Aang's motivations at that point. He could have presumed Aang ran, and blamed him for it. The problem doesn't arise from that, though. It arises in the fact that the Bumi in the live action isn't Bumi. It's a senile, angry old man badly pretending to be Bumi. As well as the fact that they're having Aang feel the guilt of his desertion, when he never deserted. What they should have made him feel is survivor's guilt. That would make SO MUCH more sense in this version, but noooooooo. The guilt for running away is practically the only part of him that they kept, and it doesn't fit.
My critique is that the adaptation probably was lit for a specific amount of episodes. Sometimes u have to do with what u got so merging episodes from the animation into 1 or 2 isn’t a bad idea. We act as if the writers are the only one in control of the project when in reality we know there’s a lot going on in the background. My issue with the show is more so about how it was handled, the writing, in which Zuko should have been more stealth like. He could have even paid the pirates as a merc group to capture the avatar for him at night and that would have easily merged another episode into the mix and made a bit more sense as he wouldn’t risk being found out. The other issue is budget management, Netflix gave the team a limited amount of money to work with and it’s up to the producers to figure it out. And finally, child actors are limited to the amount of hours they can work with. I’m sure this also created complications in the show, among the fact that they can’t just keep these kids young forever, they’re growing/ maturing people that across episodes will become older than their animated counterparts. This means they’re in a race against time to finish the season, and perhaps the entire show. Personally, I’d rather they would have given more time to polish the acting for these kids, especially the actor for Katara who seems to have issues expressing her emotions as Katara. The writing is sometimes good but then when it drops the ball it drops it hard. The cave of 2 lovers being explored by Katara and Soka instead of Katara and Aang was just disturbing. The brotherly love did not transfer well at all, especially when “love is brightest in the dark” phrase was played out. Not that it mattered because the glowing rocks in the dark didn’t even help out as it led to dead ends meaning the 2 lovers didn’t really have an escape method. Cherry on top, the 2 lovers, Oma and Shu have been shown to be of the same sex which is just BS re writing of characters
The female water benders story pitch couldve worked. The story shouldve had Katara teach the women willing to fight the ones who were tired of the rules. This would’ve happened after Aang showed her moves and got caught. Have her go back to the healing hut then have the teacher try to start teaching with Katara getting more and more annoyed. Then she bursts and gets angry. She talks about being tired of being controlled by the rules and she wants to stop the Fire Nation’s attack. This speech could be similar to the Earth Kingdom prisoner speech. She add in how her mother was a non-bender and protected her as she grabs her necklace. Talk about what they can do as benders and fighters. The ones who stays she say something like make sure you are ready so its not that disrespecting the ones who dont want to fight. This story could work with Katara lesser abilities in the Netflix or be even better. Since it was after the fight you could even have girls talking about how no one ever stood up to Pakku before, that can be the inspiration. This couldve been a good girl empowerment scene instead of just showing women. If the original show Im not sure if anyone got a name besides the Teacher. The Netflix version couldve done so much yet changed what was perfect instead of adding to the toppings of a wonderful dessert.
The show lacks in storytelling, but makes up for it with its visuals, though even that is sometimes questionable. The backgrounds are sometimes very obviously fake, giving the world a shiny and plastic-like feel. They really butchered the characters and their story arcs. I'm truly trying to forget everything about it; the writing is terrible. I can't see the second season being any better, especially since they messed up major plot points in the first season.
The biggest letdowns for me are that Aang never learns waterbending on-screen, Zuko's scar looks pathetic, they made Bumi bitter and angsty toward Aang for some reason, and Sokka doesn't express enough range as the original. Everything else is either an improvement or just ok.
I think the netflix writers misunderstood Aang with regards to drive and focus in the beginning. Aang DOES care about mastering the elements. The writers forget that the gang travels on Oppa. A living creature that needs to eat, rest, and sleep. Aang has traveled the world before. The gang is going to places that aang has mostly been to before. You see this when he looks on his map and points out places to visit ON THE WAY TO THE NORTHERN WATER TRIBE!!!!! ITS FOR OPPA THE LIVING CREATURE THAT AANG CARES ABOUT.
I would argue that the creators don't know Avatar anymore either. 1st - they did work on the Netflix version, they left early. 2nd - they also made Korra. In that show they broke many of their own rules for the world that they created. And although they intentionally made ATLA not to be preachy. They waited until the last 3 seconds of the show to show us that Korra is a lesbian. (See she was gay and you liked her). I don't care what someone's sexuality is. Never have. Nor do I need to be told that I liked her before I found out that she's gay. But what we don't know is what creative differences was between Netflix and the creators. Only the new shows will tell us about the future of Avatar
I could make a whole video alone about how much they changed Bumi for no reason. If it didn't break the flow of the video he would have gotten his own section.
Fr they added so much from season 2 but skip a good part of season 1 . So it made it seem rushed and messy. Also what the hell is wild cove. It’s such silly writing on how katara and sokka find aang. That’s why you don’t try to fix stuff that ain’t broken
I’m so scared for season 2. Everything is so clunky. Thank you omg we didn’t needed to see azula in season 1. Like her introduction was perfect we didn’t need to chnage it
I don't know how i will put my mind in disbelief of season 1 if they release season 2...It's like i'm watching house of the dragon but i just can't stop thinking about how the long winter and other prophecies like the prince that's supposed to unite the realm unfolded in s8 and how it was not a big of a thing as people in the past think of it
@@GIGio_Official too many BS especially at the ending episodes, it's like trying to catch a million falling wrecking balls with your bare palms... Remember when kuruk said his spirit was wounded beyond repair because of all the spiritual battles he had??? How can that be possible if his spirit is the avatar spirit??? Shouldn't that be transferred to everyone after him because they're reincarnations not different people passing a power down a generation line... This isn't my hero academia's one for all... They didn't want the instant KO kyoshi gave him at kyoshi island and since they set up that he needs to be in past avatar shrines to contact them (despite kyoshi talking to him outside her shrine and it's going to cause a lot of problems if all the shrines are destroyed, so no more talking to his past self??? Because they really wanted to do the giant kaiju koi fish thing, so they just broke the main lore of the avatar (and the actual meaning of avatar and reincarnation, the actual dictionary and etymological definitions) to achieve it... The book is called book of water, kuruk hardly showed up, Aang didn't learn water and we didn't even see anyone learn water or learn the philosophy of water, the push and pull that katara told aang about back in the pirate episode, no going with the flow, no nothing... We'll spend that in the book of earth... Because we wasted so much time in omashu, we didn't get the blue feel of the season with a lot of coastal villages or villages near lakes, streams or dams that they went to or solve a lot of problems with water considering they can't fight against water benders like the avatar show did for season 3 with fire benders knowing it's going to take time for aang to use fire in combat... There's so much thematic-wise and even directing-wise that they messed up in... Why is aang looking in awe as he bent sir at the beginning, something he has been doing since he was young??? There's no cultural feel to their bending, like it's something they used to because it's their way of life... Katara in the cartoon was the only one who was at awe when she started bending for obvious reasons, the rest just saw it as a natural way of life for them... It's like being in awe as you make a common meal you've been making for 5 years non stop... It's too theatrical... But at least they got the fact that the earth bending hung gar movement is actually rooted in the stance and the muscle tension from the stance should be maintained throughout the movement so no bumi in the cartoon didn't earth bend with his neck, he just braced himself and stiffened his muscles as he went into the stance like he's about to lift a barbell... Just crop out a person lifting a barbell and putt them in that cage and you'll know what he was the rest of his body was doing in the cage so when the earthbenders captured aang in omashu in the live action, they got that stance right, that's hung gar although the show didn't make the transition from the stance to movement fluid or fast and it just made it look clunky, slow and corny... Sorry, I'm making a comic rewrite of Korra to post on RUclips so I learnt a lot about avatar to try and connect ATLA to the ideas, concepts and scenarios ALOK tried and failed to show so a lot of these information is forever plastered in my mind...
I'm 20 minutes in and I'm surprised you haven't mentioned the fact that they gave Aang the ability to fly, with no glider. They showed this happening in episode 1 and I turned this s*** off immediately cuz I knew it was just downhill from there.
I’m so happy and excited that you’re back. I just wish I could start being a member of your Patreon again. I’ve missed you, Gio. Please don’t leave again 😭😭😭😭
I actually think the brush scene with Zuko and Aang isn’t a bad addition, but it should have also included the stuff Aang said in the animated version. A question to break the ice, followed by silence, followed by Aang talking a little about his past, and then Zuko answers the initial question to show he might be opening up (and then he attacks because he’s not there yet). It’s not bad, but you have to have Aang talking about his past to make the scene actually work. It shows that the conflict isn’t inevitable and that there is another path, but Zuko isn’t ready to take it yet. Personally, I think Netflix should have broke each book from the animated series into 28 episode seasons. You just don’t have enough time for this story if you go with just the eight episodes of modern streaming seasons.
Avatar Book 1: watering down. Its crazy how much they simplied and had to hammer in so many moments just leaves you beat. To keep this short, my biggest hate has to go to Azula, and Katara ending up convincing the tribe. Azula in the show never needed to seek attention she had it but in the Live action its like she's a brat. Convincing the tribe in the show Pakku slow changes when recognizing the necklace came from Katara grandma showing what he lost, and let the tribe help in a defensive way. If you shove people that have never fought in a war, i'm not a strategist but that sounds like you just adding bodies. Don't get me started on the change to Bumi. I understand what they were going with but even with that logic makes NO SENSE IF YOU THINK FOR MORE THAN A COUPLE MINUTES 🔥😡💢
Those goofy, cartoony scenes represent real world emotions and reactions. You don't need to go as big, but you do need to understand the emotion to recreate a facsimile of it
I'm 26:43 into the video and I'm hesitant to keep watching... Not because of the video itself, but because we knew this, we knew Netflix would ruin it and many of us had hope... Until it was released and that hope was shattered... I don't think I will ever touch it, not even to hate on it. Why must animated show stories be lowered in quality for a live action show that doesn't need to be will never be understood by me.
Subbed, you nailed the points here! 😃 I love ATLA & LOK, they are 2 of the best shows ever created, (IMO), and will always stand the test of time, even centuries from now as 2 of the best examples of great storytelling, and for me, my favorite shows of all time. All Netflix had to do, was follow the storyline from the OG series, they could change how the characters get to their destination, character growth etc, but not the end results of it, they could've put 3 episodes of the OG series in each of the Netflix episodes and it'd total out to the same length, they were lazy, and just didn't care about being true to the spirit of the show, as well as not incorporating any real martial arts, (apart from Zuko doing some flips and what not), to differ each bending form, as each nation is supposed to fight differently, and Aang NEVER learned water bending, in book 1, titled: WATER, which means in season 2 he's either going to magically learn water bending off screen, or maybe montaging it...either way, huge fail there. 🤦🏾♂️ The most frustrating changes to characters for me was with Bumi, Ozai and Azula. Bumi was way to angry, bitter, spiteful, and hateful, instead of being the humbled, funny, and intelligent, yet crazy, silly and strategic king he's meant to be to his best friend, who teaches Aang how to think outside the box, as he'll need that to defeat the Fire Lord. Ozai was so underwhelming, no real anger, fear, tyranny, I am not scared of him at all, he's to emotional, not cold and heartless as his show counterpart. Azula is supposed to be extremely intelligent, the best of anyone else who comes up against her, witty, fierce, competent, terrifying, yet calm and collected, and extremely good in hand to hand combat, as well as tactical planning, my favorite antagonist next to Ozai in the series and this show ruined her. 😞 Well...seasons 2 & 3 are coming, time to watch them ruin one of the best characters in the series, Toph, and the arcs for the whole crew, hoping that you review those seasons as well, Ik it'll be 10X better than this show is, lol. 💯😆
Tbh, Avatat was my childhood but I never was aware that Toph was blind until when I was like 14. Anyways, it's good show that Netflix fucked up more than even the Flash
I'm not saying he was wrong, I'm saying they should have neve put Iroh in that position in the first place. They didn't have to in the original. It felt unnecessary
@@GIGio_Official they didn’t have it in the original because it was a children’s show with stricter guidelines. This is live action and they are actually able to get away with people dying on screen and (it is technically a war), realistically people die in war but outside of that I agree with ur other points, I was overall disappointed in the show as well.
@jahmelbrewater4568 You're not getting the REASON for the objection to Iroh being there. Iroh is honorable, and would NEVER attack a man from behind like that. Being sneaky and crafty, using blind spots and such as an advantage is one thing, and he uses it to escape a few times in the original (for example, when held captive by the Earth Nation), but he never went to the extremes he did in the live action. You know, the extremes of BACKSTABBING and KILLING a man from behind. That's not Iroh.
@@dragonmaster1360 he didn’t backstab him he was defending his nephew who won the fight, and dropped his guard. Then was about to be attacked from behind because the other dude was a sore loser
I think it's really stupid that they say they wanted a "more mature" show, but then left the characters at the exact same age. The characters are still all kids in this show. If they were older teenagers the shift in their behavior would be easier to explain and they could've cast better, more experienced actors to play them. All this shows is that they were more concerned with mimicking the show than adapting it.
If you think Netflix ruined Avatar i wojld love to hear your thoughts on the book series Lockwood and Co by Jonathan Stroud. I personal think it was a great adaptation.
It may have ruined Avatar but it also saved avatar since again we have been waiting for a animated movie or new avatar series after korra ended atleast we can have fun arguing about this netflix version it has good ideas tbh like making yue a waterbender because tbh she should been a waterbender all along and as for bad moments yeah some parts are rush but hey it did give some time for us to wait until the creators of avatar finally made something like upcoming avatar movie or earth avatar series oof lol
That's what made the script for this video so hard to write. The show isn't objectively bad, but it fails in the details that made the original the juggernaut that it is. But you're right. Did give us something to talk about until those animated movies.
@@GIGio_Official Yeah like why cant they a new world that is inspired by avatar not a copycat ya know it would be cool to see a futuristic avatar and it was directed by michael bay where the benders has epic cool gear and epic action like the bayverse transformers oof lol
idk i love new Netflix show, not enough to really watch it but they made good work on EVERY THING that not involve humans. CGI is good, decorations, costums all in place. but other shit is garbage
Don’t forget Mike and Bryan tried to gaslight us when they first left with hints towards Avatar Studios. Acting like they didn’t leave because Netflix was ruining everything
My brother said something interesting about this whole thing *It feels like they wanted to make the series happen after the original series but couldn’t come up with their own plot and knew it’d be more popular if it was a remake instead.* I gotta hand it to him. He does have a point.
This morning I was literally thinking netflix thought this was a big hit and like a few months later nobody talks about it... then you talked aboit it 😂😂😂
I just pretend every live action is in a Parallel Universe to the original show or movie it makes the anger and frustration and disappointment less annoying . Then it can go both ways .
I don't believe Saka was sexist. In real life women are physically different than men. They humbled Saka in the OG because of modern gender politics not because he was wrong.
@@GIGio_Official the problem is, avatar the last Airbender is just to perfect of a show. It makes no sense to add or take away from it. It would be better if they kept everything as close to verbatim as possible. Anything more or less is degeneracy lol

20:01 They also need to consider that Aang is just a 12 year old boy. I mean, sure in the original, Aang was more mature by the end, but he's still just a child and those pitstops helped him grow as a person. They needed to let him be a kid. Air represents freedom for crying out loud!
It just feels like they missed the point entirely. Like Aang barely feels like a character in this adaptation .
Netflix believes that the protagonists of The Last Airbender are not allowed to have flaws....
It’s ridiculous, like I thought I was crazy until I realized t am avatar has no internal conflict at all throughout the series
@@GIGio_Official
Sokka can't overcome any negative flaws because he has none....
Netflix doesn't seem to get that flaws are just what makes a character human, which allows them to grow!
@@KyLewin
I can't sign off on the first half, but the latter seems to be unfortunately true....

Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
The live-action's version of King Bumi has him take on a more realistic perspective on the unintentional consequences of Aang's disappearance and has undoubtedly suffered through many of those consequences himself. With that said, he unjustly blames Aang as much as the Fire Nation for the state of the world even while knowing what happened to Aang, and then forces Aang to either kill Bumi or himself as a way to "teach" him to make a Sadistic Choice as the Avatar.
@@BumpBobLooly that is just as dumb as having the Air Nomads discuss joining in the war.

“Yeah, yeah, an ancient art unique to our culture, blah blah blah. Look, I'm just saying that if I had weird powers, I'd keep my weirdness to myself.” - Sokka
Understandable they have to cut bit of the cgi for budget wise
But Momo and Appa don't even feel like characters that we all loved,
they're nothing, appa is just transportation and momo doesn't even seem to feel like in any of the episodes even rewatching it twice they don't feel like anything.
That's how lifeless they made Appa and Momo, I ended up forgetting they were even there.

They do
Move
Key frame
Move
Key frame
Move
Key frame.
I’m actually baffled how the general public likes the live action adaptation. I couldn’t get past episode 3 with how much I HATED it!”
Some people don't look too deep into this stuff or haven't seen the original in a while. But when you watch the two back to back the difference is night and fucking day.
The people who like this show are people who did not watch the original show I feel. You'd have to be crazy to think this show is anything but terrible
I made a review of each episode.... yep it kinda suck after first episode.. first episode is passable.. later episodes became a chore...
the funny thing is nickelodeon already did a really good job of balancing the tone. netflix was so worried about how they're going to balance being a lighthearted children's show with genocide, but nick did a better job of it in the work they adapted. like the scene where aang realizes the air nomads really are dead - in the original show katara comforts him by saying she and sokka are his family and they're always gonna be there for him and she shows she can relate to him because she has lost someone she cares about too. it's a nice genuine scene and you can understand why she got through to him. in the netflix show, katara's like aang it's ok to lose people because that's when you find out how strong you are (??) which is an insane thing to say in general but especially more so to a kid who literally just found out his entire people got genocided. and it kind of leaves you thinking like.... why is aang ok with this? because if someone said that to me i would strangle them. i've lost loved ones and if someone i just met earlier that day came up to me and said it's ok because now i can find out how strong i really am i would punch them in the face. what the fuck. that's doing the opposite of handling tough themes with care.
edit: frankly aang being super serious and depressed about his duty as the avatar right from the start doesn't even make sense. if aang is truly supposed to be a silly goofy kid before the ice, he needs to be a silly goofy kid after the ice too. that was basically just a nap. natla aang is depressed right from the start. instead of actually being a goofy kid, when he sees other kids playing he just smiles sadly about how he used to be a goofy kid too once, which is not really what an actual child would be like. i hate to point to original show scenes, but the original show scene where they go penguin sledding quite literally does this way better. katara says "i havent done this since i was a kid" and aang says "you still are a kid" which in two lines of dialogue illustrates that katara has had to grow up too fast because of the war and losing her mother, and aang hasn't and still acts like a kid his age. natla has the characters monologuing and expositing about what kind of people they are all the time but the original show which actually had love and care put into it and natla is just a cash grad written by people who were either just there to collect a paycheck or overruled by higher ups at every turn
I believe 3 season is a go and approved by netflix
I remember one youtuber being mad at people calling it ass right away before it released because of the "no sexism" and "game of throne fans" and his video aged badly
Season 2 and 3 were greenlight several months ago.
From the lack of humor, the wooden acting, the rushing and terrible pacing, the overly serious tone, the pushing together plot points that don’t work together, to the godawful dialogue and characters acting completely out of character and ruining them as a result…
The show is just as bad as the movie and you can’t change my mind.
Maybe they should have watched the movie to learn what not to do
I didn't like how it looked, apart from the bending itself, the clothes look too clean and the scenery looks like magic, I think it's the lenses they used, the focus point seems to strong and harsh and everyone looks round like a biscuit

Bro Aang is unrecognizable in this adaptation.

@GIGio_Official i would break the 1st season, just fun and games, introductions of characters, and the world. Ending it with the revelations of the comet. Starts with low stakes, then build it's way up.
And this is why I’m only sticking to ATLA
where netflix went wrong was in creating this adaptation. didn't understand the characters or the story so they just looked at them on a surface level and went with that. also making Azula strong wahmen rather than menacing psychopath fire bender with miliseconds of character depth late in the series. they should have left it alone if they were going to butcher it so badly
This show was so unnecessary in my opinion.
They should have just made an Avatar Kyoshi animated show and made all of happy
@@Christo_Trismegistus I agree with that
45:48 that makess the war all the more intensse on the orginal, as when we see the room aang's mentor died in, we see that he suffocated all of the soldiers there before he died himself
@@acsound ah, I must have misremembered a headcanon as fact, I'm sorry
@@acsound It would make sense as the clothes were intact and not burned, and it would have taken the soldiers powers away, but that wasn't the case
I never watched the live action series due to the fact that the original creators of the series left the project.
I think that news dropped like 2 years before the show actually released. I just rm reading that and going "bet it's bad I don't even gotta wait"
6:04 yes there is some plot hole : the spirit of the forest that they kind of just forgot about (D & D reference game of thrones season 8)
OH FUCK. I didn't even notice that.
its bad enough they changed Aang's motivation to fly off, leading to his disappearance, but then to have the audacity to change Bumi from being Aang's only connection to his past & a source of support... into someone who is bitter and angry at the avatar for abandoning the world WHEN IN THAT VERSION AANG DIDNT EVEN DO IT ON PURPOSE??!!
@PaddleboardingFL
I mean...
Cherry on top, the 2 lovers, Oma and Shu have been shown to be of the same sex which is just BS re writing of characters
using the ember island clips as commentary was genius
You even ignored Sokka's sarcasm, he's the sarcasm and meat guy and they lost one, now hes just the ponytail guy.
Also justice for iroh when?
In the series fear of not making characters unlikeable, they succeed in making ALL the characters unlikeable IMO
Yeah, I often felt like I was watching a school play. The props all looked so paper-mâché, especially in Omashu. Really took me out.
20:53 but that wa the point?? that was "iffy" for a reason, let main characters have flaws again, damn!
This adaptation is the definition of missing the point
Aang getting devious Backshots in the Thumbnail
Edit: I'm referring to the original premiere thumbnail.
I beg your pardon?
wtf are you talking about
Touch some grass
I wish he kept that thumbnail.
HUH?!
37:01. That scream still haunts my nightmares!
7:35 I don't mean a shit on you too much but this single sentence makes me feel like that you don't understand the Avatar series
The biggest letdowns for me are that Aang never learns waterbending on-screen, Zuko's scar looks pathetic, they made Bumi bitter and angsty toward Aang for some reason, and Sokka doesn't express enough range as the original.
Everything else is either an improvement or just ok.
My problem is in that ladder "ok". This adaptation shouldn't be just okay when all they had to do was follow what was already there.
49:58 I mean, he's a little out of line but he's not wrong.
50:06 Your honor
38:00. That "f*ck no, baby" really got me!
I disliked how they remade Bumi episode, one of my fav from the entire original
21:20 took it from my mouth
I could make a whole video alone about how much they changed Bumi for no reason. If it didn't break the flow of the video he would have gotten his own section.
@@GIGio_Official Still great video sir, you got yourself subscriber
Fr they added so much from season 2 but skip a good part of season 1 . So it made it seem rushed and messy. Also what the hell is wild cove. It’s such silly writing on how katara and sokka find aang. That’s why you don’t try to fix stuff that ain’t broken
I’m so scared for season 2. Everything is so clunky. Thank you omg we didn’t needed to see azula in season 1. Like her introduction was perfect we didn’t need to chnage it
I don't know how i will put my mind in disbelief of season 1 if they release season 2...It's like i'm watching house of the dragon but i just can't stop thinking about how the long winter and other prophecies like the prince that's supposed to unite the realm unfolded in s8 and how it was not a big of a thing as people in the past think of it
1:00:30 plus he would die in the avatar state so no more avatar afterwards...
OMG HOW DID I FORGET THAT! THAT'S EVEN WORSE!!
54:50. "Avatar cheatcodes"! Up, down, down, up, left, right, right, left, 69, 96, 96, 69!
finally a youtuber who saw the dog shit that was netflix avater show
It had to be said. lol.
Lol , "Aang is being warned by his avatar cheat codes" 😂😂😂
What live action avatar movie?
There is no live action avatar movie
hey, so, I LOVE you're videos, but i was wondering if you could make a vid on disney's Moana 2?
They left out the growth curve of sokka on kinship island too
Those goofy, cartoony scenes represent real world emotions and reactions.
You don't need to go as big, but you do need to understand the emotion to recreate a facsimile of it
Great video! You managed to clearly capture all the ways that the live action adaptation fails.
I love ATLA & LOK, they are 2 of the best shows ever created, (IMO), and will always stand the test of time, even centuries from now as 2 of the best examples of great storytelling, and for me, my favorite shows of all time.
The most frustrating changes to characters for me was with Bumi, Ozai and Azula.
Well...seasons 2 & 3 are coming, time to watch them ruin one of the best characters in the series, Toph, and the arcs for the whole crew, hoping that you review those seasons as well, Ik it'll be 10X better than this show is, lol. 💯😆
52:06 SIR THAT'S A CHILD (in the context of the show at least) 😅😅😅
I’ve been waiting for you to come back
It’s been too long gio but happy to see a new vid 😊
It truly has been. Happy to see that you stuck around!
Have you ever considered comparing the adaptation of "Mo Dao Zu Shi"?
Tbh, Avatat was my childhood but I never was aware that Toph was blind until when I was like 14. Anyways, it's good show that Netflix fucked up more than even the Flash
THe fuck you mean you didn't know was blind?
6:04 So a polished turd? Pretty to look at from afar but horrible to get close to and smell?
1:02:08 I disagree with this point he attacked zuko from behind after losing and the uncle was just defending his nephew
@jahmelbrewater4568
You're not getting the REASON for the objection to Iroh being there.
Sokka was always known as the backbender lol
The only reason I'm glad this crappy remake exists is to see another dope video from you. Like usually you killing it bro. 🔥🙏
You know what, when I watched the original show as a kid, I thought Katara looked like Dora The Explorer, sort of.
If you think Netflix ruined Avatar i wojld love to hear your thoughts on the book series Lockwood and Co by Jonathan Stroud. I personal think it was a great adaptation.
Id check it out if I didn't read at like a 3rd grade level lol.
welcome back my friend! i hope all is well :)
They didn’t ruin it… the cartoon still slaps. They ruined their live action version of the show though, 100%.
50:07 That's a violation, mate. 😂
No idea what you're talking about. lol
Is there any chance for you to do a Brooklyn 99 retrospective?
My brother said something interesting about this whole thing
*It feels like they wanted to make the series happen after the original series but couldn’t come up with their own plot and knew it’d be more popular if it was a remake instead.*
I gotta hand it to him. He does have a point.
What the Christopher Columbus😂
Yes. There are objective things wrong with it. It is pandering and lost its identity.
At this point if you want a good live action avatar just watch the rdc hood avatar
I have been waiting for an upload for so long! Missed the videos!
"Netflix ruined avatar " yet the show is better than the movie .
You sir have the best review of Netflix's Avatar! Great video!
This morning I was literally thinking netflix thought this was a big hit and like a few months later nobody talks about it... then you talked aboit it 😂😂😂
The one piece live action ain't it bro, it's literally just popular to like it
I just pretend every live action is in a Parallel Universe to the original show or movie it makes the anger and frustration and disappointment less annoying . Then it can go both ways .
I don't believe Saka was sexist. In real life women are physically different than men. They humbled Saka in the OG because of modern gender politics not because he was wrong.
I like your genuine fury towards this crap adaptation!!!
Avatar is sacred to me. I couldn't stand for this degeneracy
@@GIGio_Official the problem is, avatar the last Airbender is just to perfect of a show. It makes no sense to add or take away from it. It would be better if they kept everything as close to verbatim as possible. Anything more or less is degeneracy lol
