- Once upon a time in the grand space opera of DUNE, there was a man named Duke Leto Atreides I. Born in the year 10140 AG, he was famously known as the Red Duke, and affectionately called Leto the Just. He wasn't just any noble; but the second-to-last Duke of the mighty House Atreides, the father of Emperor Paul Atreides and Regent Alia Atreides with his Bene Gesserit concubine, Lady Jessica and the grandfather of Leto II Atreides, who later went on to become the God-Emperor.
Celebrated for his fair and compassionate leadership, he managed the reins of Caladan before shifting to the harsh desert world of Arrakis. This was all amidst an ongoing feud with the devious Baron Harkonnen.
House Atreides were one of the big players in the Galactic Padishah Empire and one of the so-called Houses Major. The family claimed their lineage all the way back to Old Earth, specifically to ancient Greece as descendants of King Agamemnon, a son of Atreus (hence the 'Atreides' tag). For twenty generations, Atreides ran the show on Caladan, making it a model of good governance. They had a knack for creating a society that was not only well-organized but also spiritually content.
Caladan was a verdant paradise, quite the opposite of the Harkonnens' industrial hellscape, Giedi Prime. But don't be fooled by their utopian lifestyle; the Atreides were also battle-hardened, with Swordmasters, Warmasters, Mentats, and their own unique Battle Language.

It's funny how his ability for making allies made him a target by the ruling powers.
Duke Leto had to much rizz for his own good.
Consequences of the 2nd and 3rd degree, and just plain jealousy.
Regarding consequences, look at it from the Emperor's perspective. Here's a popular man in the Landstraad, with a military force rivaling your Sardukar, with an intelligence network as powerful as a your own, maybe better.
Shaddam IV could never allow him to live in case Leto became the focus of a rebellion against him, even if he had no intention.
It's always great when you're looked at as "beneath me". As soon as you're looked at as an "almost" equal, that greatness/ability becomes a death sentence, so to speak.
I think Leto was power hungry, and had his eye on Shaddam's throne...that's why he accepted Arrakis (and endangered the lives of his family), even though he suspected it was a trap...He thought he had more time to recruit the Fremen on his side...Leto probably knew he would have the Landsraad behind him in his claim to the throne (on top of the Emperor's treachery)....Baron Harkonnen in the book dreamed of House Harkonnen gaining the throne the same way - during a conversation with Fenring he feigned horror that the Emperor might attack him, but secretly hoped it would happen - so he could rally the Landsraad behind him
I also think this is why Leto didn't marry Jessica...he wanted to maintain the option of a favorable political marriage...and what would be more favorable than marrying one of the Emperor's daughters and taking the throne? So perhaps Shaddam was not the only one wishing Leto would marry Irulan..maybe Leto was also wishing it
I never understood why Corrino didn't marry Irulan to Leto. Their children would continue as Corrino and Paul would remain Atreides. And the emperor would have gained a powerful and popular ally instead of relying on the the scheming Harkonnen.

Do you find the answer the books give unsatisfying. Shadam muses on how he wishes he could have married Leto to Irulan. But he's too old. Which I take to also include he has a family that's too well established. Even though he technically isn't married and that's specifically so he could be, he might as well be married. He'd never love Irulan and his first son and heir would always be Paul. Really Paul and Jessica would both need to be killed for it to all work smoothly.
@@pseudonymousbeing987 Yeah, I remember something along those lines, but marriage is supposed to be a political transaction. In that sense, it would make quite a lot of sense.
And as I said, their "secondary" offspring could inherit from the Corrino line while Paul would remain the Duke of Caladan - now also bonded to the royal family.
The books state it was based about the idea of creating a hybrid between the two houses - Paul was to be a girl and married to the Harkoen and then their child would have been the chosen one.
The Emperor lamented this, but I think real Politick dictated Leto had to go, since he was too popular. Even with his honor, its not too hard to imagine someone using them to overthrow the Corrinos.
oscar isaac was perfectly cast. He is a master at portraying a decent man, who still conveys a hint of being capable of F'ing you up if he has to

Well Leto the first was killed as a baby, he was killed by a Harkonnen attack on the Freman while Paul & Chani were away. Duke Leto the Just had two grandchildren carry his name.

I would love more coverage on the battles Duke Leto fought in the days before Paul was born. They sound interesting, like why were they fought and who was involved who won why they started how they finished and how it impacted everything else
Leto is an example of "always keep your leaders to account, even if you love them."
In the books, its clear he focuses a lot on his image (something about a propaganda center). And despite his skills as a leader and the strength he wielded, he still failed his House. Some of it is attributed to his honor, as he would have never refused an order from the Emperor, despite knowing it was a trap. But a lot of it was his inability to play to real Politik. If he really wanted to, he could have married any of the Great Houses and forged an alliance that would have given more protection. But didn't out of love.
Actually he would ask help for the fremem people. He sent someone to make peace with Fremen people in advance. If he succeed, he would have a very powerful army in a strategic place. It was a political strategy too
@@edumalafaia11 yes and it was a good plan, but even then that plan depended on speed and time, which they didn’t have.
Also, in the Imperium at the time, the Fremen were seen as less than citizens, so no one would care if the Atreides made an alliance with (in the minds of most of the Imperium), a few ten thousand desert scavengers.
As faster and more guaranteed plan that would lasted longer and been more widely recognized would have been a marriage. Which of course Leto refused out of love for Jessica.
And if someone in his circle actually spoke up and confronted him about this, maybe something more permanent would have arisen. But everyone loved him so much, no one questioned him.
And that really is the lesson Frank Herbert was trying to teach. Always keep your leaders to task, whether they enable you to normalize horrible things for fun, if they are the most noble and honorable person you know, or if they use religion.

This is a good one. Getting to that time to go back and watch/listen to all of your videos on characters or stories relating to Dune. This is my favorite Sci Fi movie series happening these days. I’m a non reader so these videos help greatly

QUESTION TO ANYONE: what happens to Planet Caladan and the people during the destruction of the Atredes army on DUNE. So far I have not seen or heard anything about what happens on Caladan and what happens when they find out Paul is alive and is the ONE. Does anyone know this?
When Paul became emperor fiefdom of Caladan was given to Gurney Halleck, who Paul trusted to rule while he was away

If I'm not mistaken, in the time between The Fall of Leto and the Ascension of Paul, Caladan was given over to another House, but I'm not sure which. Is it possible they just let the planet "lay fallow"?
@@JunkPhuJP it was given to Count Fenring, a close friend and advisor to Emperor Shaddam IV & another possible Kwisatz Haderach that wasn't viable because he was a genetic eunuch. He's married to Lady Margot another Bene Gesserit. Until Paul came to power who turned it over to Gurney.

i have to say ,i like the Buttlarian Jihad and how the stories lead to Dune ,Atreides ,Harkonnan even the sisters of Roszak ,the Holman shield , the mentats, even the sword masters.( sorry about spelling ) , im a prequel guy and love to know how things got how they are.

With the details and research you do for your videos it would be great to see the backstory, powers and abilities and the impact the characters have. Whether it’s the Hashira to the Demons. The seasons are amazing and with the second to last chapter coming out in a few months, definitely would be neat to see.

Just a calculated show of b*lls and fighting prowess, to gain loyalty...not too different from the Harkonnen gladiatorial combats...How do we know Leto (or the 'fight organizers') didn't have the animal drugged to weaken it and slow it down? Rather than risk the bull killing another Duke? And that bull would not have killed Leto's father in the first place if he didn't enjoy and engage in such a cruel, brutal sport...so perhaps the Atreides were not so virtuous after all

i don't get why villeneuve claims his movie is closer to the books. when the books say the sardaukar were equiped in harkonnen fashion to cover them. duncan idaho only recognising them AFTER they start fighting, because he recognises their style and skill.
i think that’s simply a change necessary for a movie adaptation. it would be difficult to communicate that visually so they make it clear when the sardaukar show up.
Leto was a normal stand-up guy who managed his realm in peace and prosperity.
Compared to the other houses shown so far maybe even too down to earth😂
Good thing AI is forbidden in the universe of Dune, otherwise i think the Duke might have been boinking machines...

No society has ever preserved, peacefully, stability, prosperous without having also a strong military tradition and skills
In a world where hollywood/the entertainment industry likes to make everyone morally grey/anti hero’s/villains with good motives, it was refreshing to see Duke Leto essentially be an altruistic character who treated everyone with trust and respect. I like to think he died believing his sacrifice ended the Harkonen invasion because he deserves to go out like that
The video miss characterizes Duke Leto’s response to being ordered to rule over Arkas. The video says he jumped at the opportunity, the book gives the idea that the Duke saw it as a an attempt at banishment, Second the video says the Emperor offered Sardukar as an incentive for invasion of araks, this is miss leading cause it was Duke Harkonen who required the sardukar so the emoporer could not claim ignorance of the event

Paul showing up at the round table meeting after killing the hunter seeker made his dad so happy, also btw at the meeting u hear them talking about how many freemen their was on Dune and the Harkoneen estimated 50,000 to 100,000, which was way off the atreides mentat did some math and said it was possible their was millions of them. That underestiation by the harkoneen proved to be their dowmfall as they where attacked am beaten by the freemen

I think leto was the third last to hold the title of Duke. Pual and leto both held the title. Second to last is penultimate.
People please read the books or listen in audiobook format. They are so much better than the movies
Absolutely. The books are amazing. But it is nice to see a visual portrayal, even if it’s not fully fleshed out. Villeneuve did an incredible job.

As a character though keeping him alive he wouldn't really function because he's too perfect. There's nothing really to change. To see a perfect dude win and knowing that all he's done is whole life is when win no matter what, is not interesting in a story

The movie would’ve been better with a backstory or more character dev. My hubs never saw the movie or read the book… so he didn’t understand any of the stuff. No explanation of what the true spice was. Why they wanted the house to go down. What the hell having a girl meant. It was pretty bad. I read all the GOT books first but u can watch the series and have most understanding of what is happening

Not drawing attention to where the film diverts from the books and where the works of the father seperate from those of the son feels a disservice to properly explaining the lore of Dune.
I'm a super 40 Imperial fan boy, and with Amazon and GW getting together, I fear that product will come off as a Dune/LOTR ripoff.
Ahhh an Imperial fanboy, nice. I hope they do the lore justice. It’s an insane and dark world, idk if they can pull it off. I’m also worried…Amazon completely botched Tolkien‘s works. But hopefully Cavill will make the difference.
The new trailer for the new Dune movie was really disappointing, against Villanue is putting visuals over world building and context, the Harkonnen seems like Albino monsters, also, what should be in the first movie, Shaddam, Irulan, the Bene Gesserit and the Spice Guild are now in this movie, hell, they added what it seems flashbacks of the interaction between Paul and Irulan, that should have been in the first movie, this whole trilogy is a mess, like the Star Wars Sequels, good visuals, very poor and barren storytelling.
