PAUL ATREIDES (The Kwisatz Haderach of DUNE) EXPLAINED

- Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained. As requested, today we’ll be exploring Paul Atreides, as featured in Frank Herberts expansive Dune universe.
Paul Orestes Atreides was the first Kwisatz Haderach, the last Duke of House Atreides, the first and founding Padishah Emperor of the Atreides Empire, and the supreme religious leader of the Fremen as the accepted Mahdi.
The only son of Duke Leto Atreides I and Lady Jessica Nerus, Paul's early years were plagued by suspicions of him being the Kwisatz Haderach.
Fuelled by the historic prophecies of the Lisan al-Gaib planted by the Missionaria Protectiva centuries ago, throughout his life, Paul found himself inching closer and closer to great power - one that would have unimaginable consequences on the universe.

I love how everyone/everything has these unique names and then there’s Jessica and Paul over here lol.
Admittedly, there are a lot more names involved that exist today: Lehto, Duncan Idaho, Piter de Vries, House Harkonnen (from the Finnish Härkönen) and its leader Vladimir. Most notably is the House of our boy Paul: Atreides is the ancient Greek term for the son of Atreus, Atreus being the father of King Agamemnon.
Brings to mind the phrase "Nothing new under the sun." Which was part of the immersion for me, how skillfully Herbert wove bits of our reality into his.
Paul atreides, mahdi, lisan al gaib, usul, muad dib, quizat haderach, the emperor, the preacher.
Paul gets more than a couple cool names/titles as the story goes on 😂
I'm late, but Paul is a Biblical name. I know in invokes the image of a brick layer or something today, but remember he was the Apostle.
I heard somewhere that maybe they want the audience to relate to those actors by giving them "easy" names.
Biblical names.
No matter how many times I heard it,the story of the life of Paul Atreides is still fascinating.
true
Yes it is.
Exactly this. I know this story almost by heart, but I will never not love the unfolding of it, and I will never not be absolutely stunned by the plans within plans plotting and the efficiency of that secrecy.
It feels like it could be real, in a way
Amen. And Leto the II's too. And the Duncans. And everybody. Somebody erase them from my mind so I can re-discover them all again. Or wait, no need. Every time I read again any of the books, new reflections come up. Frank Herbert was a poet, a philosopher, a visionary, I don't even know where it stops.. love Dune with all my heart and mind
This was truly great storytelling. It broke the mold on the "hero's journey" by showing you need to be careful what you wish for. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Paul knew what his actions would bring, but was powerless to stop it.
It's not always absolute power corrupts absolutely, its that the already corrupted are drawn to greater power.
Absolute power attracts those who are corruptible. For some reason the quizatz haderach chose to be incorruptible, putting his species needs ahead of his wants and desires.
@@jordantucker9799Both. It’s a vicious circle.
@@seanhewitt603He corrupted himself when he accepted his ‘fate’. As for putting the needs of a species above another’s or above an individual’s…
What is a species if not the sum of all its individuals? If a human kills all the others humans, does he save the human species? Or, perhaps, killing everyone but sparing a breeding couple, like the bloody Floor story? Imagine an alien making such decision in which you and your spouse are not chosen - would you agree that it’s good idea?
Killings one is like killing the whole species. When a man, woman, or child is killed, the whole humankind is killed. And the humanity in the killer who is an animal that thinks itself god.
“Always be wary of your heroes.” That is the lesson.
Not going to lie, when I first saw the Sci-Fi channel’s mini-series, and then read the book as a teen, I completely missed the fact Paul was seeing the future. I was just, “oooo, space ships, knife fighting, deserts, politics, and sand worms.”
HOW?!?! That is like the entire thing. What exactly did you think prescience and oracular visions were
@@Alaybaba hey I was just trying to get my book reading count in for 8th grade. Plus, I wasn’t prepared for the supernatural stuff, since I just thought it was a simple revenge tale in a deep world
@@JunkPhuJP well spoilers ahead but for those curious on some background on what the hell posessed paul to go ahead with the jihad despite what happened
Basically paul, pre water of life absolutely did not want that much blood on his hands, however when his visions showed he was fucked untill he stops fighting his fate
And thus he allowed the water of life, shattering his soul and became muad'dib
Thanks to his soul being shattered and effectively being a husk with trillions of souls, muad'dib became jaded and brutal, allowing the jihad despite what embers of paul screaming for the massichre to stop.
What remained of paul became the prophet, and thus later, both muad'dib and paul would die,and his being would find himself with leto ll, his son and also a kwizats haderach
I appreciate your honesty
He didn't see the future, he saw potential futures... he chose one and made it manifest. He created a new way.
I honestly can’t wait for the second Dune movie.
Idk the movie was so slow and boring for me, with all the typical stuff, them being betrayed, hero journey, trying to gain the trust of the outcasts, blah blah, snore. It was visually pleasing, but the movie put me to sleep.
@@levansegnaro4637 there's a lot more action in the second half of the book
@@levansegnaro4637 you read the books?
@@levansegnaro4637 the story of Dune subverts the heroes journey. You could say Paul is the villain
Not watched the first one yet, waiting until I can see both back to back.
You can always tell where Frank Herbert's work ends and Brian Herbert's work begins, because the quality drops so rapidly not even an ornithopter can save you.
I love the Duneverse. It has a real nice blending of a ton of cultures with the slight touch of magic. It's almost like the opposite of Warhammer 40k... I mean, 40k is more space travel, lots of magic, and plenty of grim darkness, but they share a few similarities.
warhammer took inspiration from dune and many other sci fi titles, so thats why
Well i guess Most new things in some way consider what has Been done before and take influence one way or another. I dont Mind two universes sharing a few aspects as Long as they dont
@@lucahoffmann9029 thank you for explaining the extremely difficult concept of "inspiration". We are all wiser now, thank you Lucahoffmann9029
Wanna get into the Warhammer universe and games. Where should I start? I don't wanna enough to begin the very first or too old or long ones. Or its inavoidable? Any suggestions?
@@marcomongke3116 just start anywhere. Honestly. The 40k lore is so dense you might as well bring a pickaxe when you start. Lol
Worm boy worm boy whatcha gonna do

Hahahahaha
@@kevinren3228 there’s a bit of truth there
He only got millions and if not then thousands in the lore, not billions.
Worm boi!!!
When I began reading Dune I just knew that Paul was the foundation for Anakin and Luke Skywalker.
Paul wasn't an inexperienced farm boy like Luke, or the son of a slave like Anakin- he was well educated and trained from the cream of aristocracy
@@markroberts1098give you cream
@@markroberts1098it’s the story of a chosen one with strange powers who walks away from the path and forces his twin children to take up the mantle.
Is that dune or Star Wars?
@@markroberts1098 they also have different names and they like different kinds of ice cream, it means those stories and characters are totally 100% different and incomparable. Are you st-pid?
Paul was legit playing 5d chess towards the end of his life, out maneuvering all of his enemies so easily.
I wonder how they ever thought they would be able to control the Kwisatz Haderach? He was always going to be more powerful so what was the plan I wonder?
The way I see it, it's a statement how the elderly retain so much power in a society built by the young.
You'd expect the physically strong young one to take the reins the moment their capable, but the reality is that the youngster in question has been 'mentally sabotaged' for a lack of better term. Their growth is deliberately shadowed to prevent usurping.
The same thing here with the Bene Geserit. I'd figured they would try to whisk the child away and introduce methods and spice gradually into the chosen person. Deliberately pulling away when it suits them and then applying pressure later. The true reality was that the Sisterhood didn't see a true successor, but a blatant power projector for future schemes. If it meant breaking their chosen prodigy, then I'm sure they could figure mental gymnastic for it.
@@TheNapster153 - There is a massive difference between physical strength and the type of strength that the sisterhood and the Kwisatz Haderach possess. I feel you analogy, while a good one for physical strength, is not a good one for the type of power they wield (I feel it is a whole other ball game as it gives the power not only to control others but to see the very future which in turn does not allow for manipulation by definition if you are the more powerful).
@@PartStupid i think they were betting on their quizat haderach having no political power, being an atreides offspring of a male harkonnen. The youth would have no way to become emperor like paul did so perhaps they figured they could either take the child at birth to raise or manipulate them as they grow into agreeing with the sisterhoods ways. Thats what they do with everyone else. From there the only real choice for the quizat haderach is to become their weapon.
For real, I think that that’s where like the “faith” of the sisterhood was supposed to kick in, just like good Catholics or Protestants think that one day we will have a good “Christian” president and then everything will be alright until Christ comes back. But yeah I’ve had that exact thought like, how could they think that once he had real prescience he would just be a good little boy and listen
Logically the BG thought that their ultimate goal (preservation of humanity) was something a Kwisatz would have shared. Indeed, in God Emperor, Leto II takes control of the BG breeding program to produce Siona Atreides, and precipitate the Scattering. The BG play a bigger role in the next two books as the steward of the Golden Path.
Awesome job, Niyat, and skillful summary of Paul's life. The amazing Dune universe is rich with themes and concepts; the one that stands apart for me is how placing all of your trust, hope and dreams in one person is always dangerous, and Herbert beautifully displayed that warning in Paul's jihad that eventually killed billions. Blindly - that is, uncritically and even worshipfully - following a president, monarch, tyrant, or god-emperor, invariably leads to much suffering and destruction, regardless of how noble the vision.
The legend stated that the Atreides family came from a noble family that originated in Greece on Earth, and that they rose to prominence during the Butlerian Jihad. House Atreides specifically claimed descent from King Agamemnon, a son of Atreus, in Greek mythology.
I already knew most of this lore, but it is still great to hear it from someone who is so knowledgeable about the Dune universe. Thank you Niyat for your dedication.
Finally watched this new movie. Was done really well and made a lot more sense than the old ones that I still enjoyed a lot as a kid
Hell yeah! I just started reading Dune a couple days ago! Love your stuff Niyat
Awesome! Thank you :)
A very complicated timeline explained in a concise and entertaining way. Great video.
Love all the new Dune videos. Since I've read the series of books, it's nice to see someone else's point of view and breakdown.
I’ve been hanging for this video by you for forever!
I sometimes wonder what would've happened if Paul had the strength of will to proceed with Golden Path instead of surrendering and having Leto go through with it. Leto was ruthless for 3 millennia, but Paul in some ways was wiser and sticker, yet considerably gentler than Leto. While it's true Paul and Leto both saw Golden Path as the only way to save humanity, its interesting how Paul would've gone about preparing for it, since he didn't merge with sandworms.
He would have merged with sandtrout, that was the reason why he refused the Golden path, it was a choice to terrible. That's why he told Leto 'you did what I couldn't do.'
Paul was probably a bit too sensitive and too attached to his humanity to properly navigate the golden path. From the start he felt trapped by his destiny and often reluctant to accomplish the duties tied to it
It's like you saw my YT history. I subbed to you, then decided to get into Dune, and then you release this LOL Thanks!! V excited c:
Hehe perfect!
Paul is such a powerful figure. He desperately wanted to stop the fighting in “his name,”and yet each step he took brought him closer to it. Eventually bringing about a tyrant. Fulfilling his visions. Makes you wonder what came first? The chicken or the egg?
Another fantastic video. You never miss!!
Great breakdown! Thanks for the upload!
Binge rewatching all of your videos 👌
23:18 That is a really pretty drawing of Paul Atreides in all white robes. I love it.
I enjoy watching your video, your presentation and professionalism. Good job.
I always wondered how they would've kept the Harkonens from killing the female Atreades after the wedding.
By controlling both of them. The Bene Gesserit whole source of power is controlling their prospects
Can you do one on the spice melange itself, or the technology of dune like the holtzman engines and shields
Great suggestion Ian! Adding that to the list :)
@@filmcomicsexplained Yes please! :D
Glad I started watching your Dune videos. You cover everything and more fantastically. All your film and character videos are the best I've seen. The Dune books are quite a read for sure. When it comes to science fiction I can't stop picking up new novels. One day I hope to see Neuromancer adapted into a proper film. If they could do Dune, Blade Runner and others. I believe it's possible for a faithful adaptation of that along with the rest of the Sprawl series. Again lovely stuff my man!
Absolutely loved this well played sir ✌
I love how you read that line, But I will never do her bidding. Well done!
Pls do a long video about Duncan & how he eventually became the KH! How through his ghola’s being reborn again and again with their constant memories of living and dying they became greater that Paul & Leto!
Jason is going to have a steady career if each Dune book gets greenlight.

Great job. I really enjoyed this video.
Just saw part 2, was crazy good.

Very informative thank you
I got to see Hans Zimmer live this year 2022 and it was a magnificent experience, played Interstellar, Bat Man, Gladiator, Inception, pirates of the Caribbean and more but there was one song played in particular I didn't recognise and watched Dune 3 months ago, then I recognised it immediately. So I was listening to the Dune soundtrack without even knowing it. Mind blown.
Must have been an amazing experience
@@GianniEndo It was absolutely brilliant! It was even better known that Hans Zimmer turned down Christopher Nolan because he was dedicated to doing the Dune soundtrack.
I really enjoy all your Dune videos. I also enjoy the way combined the extended Dune universe & with the Frank Herbert universe, thank you.🙏
Good stuff. Well done!
Something interesting about the ability to see the future is the question of if you see one particular path or set of events are you able to change that path or are you blinded by the visions of the possible futures. This question is basically a question of is it the knowledge of a particular set of actions that that really makes them happen or is it a case of you can avoid the problem because of knowledge of it. I understand that there are many different ways to interpret the ability to see the future and time travel and many other things however in this particular case its possible that the ability to see the future or travel in time actually works as a blinding mechanism. A good example of this is with technology and how if one answer to a particular problem is found its very likely that no other options will be found under any circumstances but not impossible to happen its just a case of a certain type of technology will blind you to others that solve the exact same problem but slightly differently from what was first found. You have seen that in the real world because we had a mechanical means to cool down materials to well below freezing with only the use of the sun, however even though this discovery existed well before the common electric freezer or AC it wasn't rediscovered until the traditional freezer and AC were invented because of popularity of those methods and many other things. I will also say that we have a very interesting method of cooling and heating using sound and geometry to make something that is extremely cold on one end and extremely hot on the other. If you are curious about the two technologies I listed search "acoustic cooling" and "solar mechanical freezer" if I can post the links to the concepts or a good idea of them I will edit this post or make another post with the links.
I so much your essays on the key characters in the Dune universe!

Jason Mamoa did a pretty good job as duncan, at least I thought. Which was pretty surprising to me, not because his skill at acting but because he looks nothing like idaho does in my head
Excellent writing and production!
Good job...
I'm excited for the next Dune!
Have you covered the Sandman comics and the show at all or no?
You want to understand Dune? Read the books. No movie, tv show, or video will help you experience this amazing story like the books will.
Indeed, it's the foundation
However, videos like this can give you bits of information that didn't exist until Frank's son decided his last name would be a meal ticket. Such as: i had no idea Piter was on goblin mode trying to kill baby Paul.
Yes, the books are awesome. However, I am not sure why this story hits so hard. I feel like it is a long standing human memory. Creepy to some extent.
@Ftm Rivas It's because it's filled with occult inversions of Christianity (as misunderstood in the west - the real deal is in the East, Eastern Orthodox Christianity which more and more people are discovering and joining in the west including America). Lots of double-think too.
I can't read while driving 😂
I've read, what? 19 Volumes now and I always thought the House Books were pretty good. I like the timeline way that you edit your uploads. They're good remedials for when you haven't time to read 19 Volumes. Again. Good stuff, thanks.
Thank you job well done 👍 subscribed 😎
On prescience... It wasn't flawless, Paul could see knots in time, a nexus where multiple futures were possible but unknown until those events had played out. A good inclusion to stop the story being seen as entirely predictable.

Please more dune explained videos! Perhaps about Baron Harkonnnen?
Keep up the dune content.
Clever, having Paul talking to the real Kwisatz Haderach in the opening scene of your video like that.
Molded for greatness, he is, Paul.
Ways of the word and voice of the Benne Gesserit from his mother, Jessica. Ways of the politics, nobility, and justice from his father, Duke Leto (who is noble in both status AND kindness). Ways of the sword from TWO of the greatest swordsmen in the entire Imperium, no less. One of them being a Ginaz Swordmaster (Duncan Idaho), which is superior in every way, even to a Sardaukar.
I believe the reason Paul left the Golden Path, was because of his empathy. He SAW he had to take a drastic road in order for humanity to evolve, for humanity to become greater, to avoid stagnation and ultimately become extinct. After reading up on what Leto II did in order to achieve the Golden Path, I can understand why Paul refused to do so. It wasn't weakness, it was just human nature, to empathize. Not that Leto II was evil, Leto II was remarkable in his own way, able to shoulder enough guilt and responsibility to drive a normal man insane. Leto II saw what he NEEDED to do, and he just said "Okay, if no one else will, I will." All for the benefit of the ENTIRE human race, regardless of whether they were good or bad.
The more I delve into the Dune universe (no pun intended), the more invested I become. God, everything is just so... GOOD! Uuugh.
[DOOM/Attack On Titan/Warhammer 40k] What If DOOM Attack On Titan And Warhammer 40k Had Same Universe
Good summation
FATHER, THE SLEEPER HAS AWAKENED!
Both Paul and his son Leto ll loved humanity too much and both expressed it in diametrically opposed ways.
Paul loved humanity too much to shut himself off from them.
Leto ll loved humanity too much to allow the possibility of its death and deliberately *severed* his connection to mankind to save it.
Accepting the ultimate loneliness and an unknown level of eternal consciousness in the worm fragments; out of that love and in full knowledge of what he was sacrificing of himself.
@@tyrantworm7392 So true. While I don’t condone actions that cost many lives, I, at the least can understand their choice because of the gravity of it. I’ve read the Dune books up to Heretics and I’ve yet to read *what* exactly each of the Prescient Atreides saw in their visions regarding what would happen if Leto didn’t make the choice to become what he became. I know only that what was seen was too horrific to countenance.
The characters such as Thanos, Leto and the God Emperor of Mankind in Warhammer, all made a choice because in truth there absolutely *wasn’t* any choice, the forces arrayed against the future of sentient life in each respective setting was too immense and if measures weren’t taken the outcome was inevitable. So they made the unthinkable choice, because *no one else would* , even if it meant being vilified by history.

Do a video about the technology of Dune, in how before the spacing guild they had robots and computers. Then, after the spacing guild, it was simple yet advanced machines and tools. Then how does technology change again after God emperor Leto and then lastly in the final book chapter house Dune.
Watching the portrayal in "Scifi channel's" [Children of Dune] was truly heartbreaking.

@@clifftanton8385 to be fair, it's a bit much to ask of any (human)..
To be "the guy" aka the savior of humanity, you have to build it up to a point where humanity is self sufficient and reliant enough to survive an apocalypse and genocide...and then commit the apocalypse/genocide yourself.
Leto II killed trillions of people and scattered humanity to the far ends of the universe, everyone ran and fled from his atrocities.
And ONLY because Leto II was the worst thing that had ever happened to humanity (so far),
That humanity survive when the robo wars (2) happened.
Humanity was so spread out from how badly Leto II messed them up, when the robots came back from the edge of the universe to finally wipe out all living beings, it was too hard to find everyone all at once to activate their "nukes".
The robots had to do it the old fashion way and kill each human one body at a time instead the superweapon they prepared.
Because the robots hadn't planned for another being to have decimated the human race so badly that they evolved and spread out so randomly and widely,
That the human race was given enough time to mount an offensive and beat the robos.
Paul didn't feel like being spice Hitler, even if doing so saved the human race.
It's a tight morally gray rope to walk, and I believe the book talks about how Paul felt like shit that he basically forced his son to walk the line
This video made me go and buy the original book, going to see what all the fuss is about. I'll try and remember to come back and tell people from an outsider's perspective if it's good Sci-Fi.
such an incredible story
Given that the House of Atreides descends from King Agamemnon from ancient Greece, does that make them the descendants of Zeus, of the Greco-Egyptian Argolides and Phoenician Cadmeides or did Frank Herbert was simply considering Agamemmnon from a historic perspective rather than mythological?
Because I would, otherwise, find this ironic that the ultimate Super-Being happens to be none only the descendant of some of old Earth's early greatest theocratic rulers, but also hinted to be an unsignificanfly _more-but-human_ in ways that even the Bene Gesserit couldn't fathom...
There’s no magic or Gods in Dune
Humans who sought eternal life renamed themselves after historical names when their consciousness were put in a machine. Thus the names you see and the laws against thinking machines in the future dune universe
@@heathwillmann6279 I am pretty sure that the Dune expanded novels explicitly states that years prior the rise of the Titans and Cymeks into political prominence and of the thinking machines, both Greek-descended Old Empire aristocrat-gone leader of the Cymeks/Titans Andrew Skouros/General King Agamemnon and his biological son Vorian Atreides were already claiming to trace their ancestry further back in the "Old Empire" Era to the House of Atreus and Agamemnon of Myceanean Greece. Not as a pseudohistorical putative pedigree but a *matter-of-fact based* historical pedigree. Agamemnon is a mythified historical figure instead of a legendary heroic figure of epic mythology made of composite historical and mythical figures, in Dune lore.
However, Dune never openly admitted that the former Achaean ruler's claims of divine ancestry were true. They're even completely brushed over. Nevertheless, the expanded lore implies that the House of Atreus always had a foreboding destiny and specialness that might defines and fashions any of their direct genetic descendants in the far future-- this may or may not implies there's something not ordinary about the Atreides's bloodline that may dates back to the Old Empire.
I got into Dune after watching the 2000 SyFy Miniseries of the same name.
Oddly, i see little acknowledgement of that show and glad there was some with the Old Man and Leto II in here.
Is it me or no matter what I read or watch this is the hardest lore I’ve ever tried to understand
