Paul Simon's song writing and Art's voice, was a marriage of two talents that became one. I love them both equally, and love their music and always will. I just wished they would put the past where it belongs, and make up. Life is so short and anyone of the two, could go tomorrow. Grievances and resentment are too heavier a bourdon to carry.
I don’t understand why I didn’t appreciate their music when I was young. Now, I find their music so soothing. Highly intellectual lyrics that are so profound, and artistic expression of the music gives me goosebumps.
I got into them when I was maybe 13, 14. My older sister came downstairs one day and disgustedly said, why are you listening to THAT? I just thought, wtf, this is great, but if I have to explain...well, let's just say that is the day I realized my sister was intellectually low brow. All these years later it has held true.
"..but the reason we broke up was ... we were kids and we didn't think it was a big deal to break up. So we broke up." Well, we were all kids once and decades later you, maybe, begin to understand what your parents meant when they said that youth is wasted on the young. Still, that era, when they/we were young produced a great body of music. Some of greatest of it came from Simon and Garfunkel. It's timeless and priceless. I'm so thankful they gave us as much as they did of their amazing talents before they stopped doing it together.
When you have 2 halves that are great in their own right you get a whole when combined, I am just so happy that these two ego greats pulled together & made the best music in history!!
They were TOGETHER... BOTH PHENOMINAL!!! "The Boxer" ... "Scarborough Fair"... "Sounds of Silence"... "Old Friends"... "Kathy's Song"... top drawer talent...
they made such an amazing contribution to modern music and at the most complicated periods of social change... they moved the world in deep psychological way...
I could tell Simon and Garfunkel how great you were and how you moved so many young folks, but they've heard all that before... I am going to tell them and anyone else, that life is all about learning to love and work with one another for now, so that we can do this forever after in the hereafter. It's all about love, forgiveness and acceptance of other people,with all their foibles and falts. Wether they reunite in this world or the next, I hope to hear them again as a duo. What they had was so very special and heaven on earth for multitudes.
The last lines of the last verse ("words of the prophets are written on the subway walls...") are poetry, echoing "Poem on an Underground Wall" ("a single-worded poem comprised of four letters"). SImon has given a lot more, but just that would have been enough.

there is wisdom in that, in knowing when it's over, and not trying to force a different ending. Sad, but less final. I think Paul wanted to grow musically in a much wider direction, and Art wanted go another way. Paul is still inventing himself, the way Dylan does, and Paul McCartney. They survive because they have the courage to make mistakes and get beyond them. And the music they made still resonates.
Turns out that neither Paul McCartney nor Paul Simon could artistically match their output with their partners. Both Paul's were popular but both took a step down musically when they went solo.

Have to admit, they are both considerate to each others personalities, with no ego, despite their career problems. Pity they did not stay active together for longer. Think of the other masterpieces they would have made.
Paul Simon says at the end - if they didn't break up for personal reasons, they would have for musical. He went on to create great music (a poet and a one man band ...). Had they stayed together, there would be no graceland, and all the other gold and frankenscence.
So sad that Paul Simon chose to erase Art Garfunkels vocals from his Hearts & Bones which was to be a great album with both of them. It would have been so much more successful & the fans were waiting for another S&G album. Paul was always jealous of Artie’s superior voice.
I had a lift-back Corolla and homemade speakers way back when. It was a warm sunset in fall, drove to the end of this beautiful old rural road growing over with calf high grass, popped the back, put on "Bookends"... The love of my life was with me, I wanted to surprise her, we didnt as much "waltz" open armed to this song as much as I just pulled her into a hug and swayed until it ended. I miss what we could have been Yvonne. For two minutes of my life I was the happiest man alive, in the right spot, right time, with the right woman... Sharing exactly the best thing ever. Nothing else mattered and I wish time could have stopped. I hope you are blessed, wherever you are now.

Does anyone know if Paul and Eddie are maternal twins? I'll have to research this because I happen to know that Paul Simon is left-handed as I am. I saw Bob Dylan and Paul Simon at the Hollywood Bowl in 1999. Perfect June night. 6th row seats with Val Kilmer and his girlfriend a couple seats down from us, Jack Nicholson just behind us with his head thrown back the entire time with that inimitable grin. Simon played first. Dylan played next. And then they played together. Magical. Seems like another lifetime ago.
Something about the ‘harmonies’ of two people singing together, who are such opposites. Similar to the Evenly Brothers, their early inspiration. Whatever the differences, somehow musically it works as a perfect whole.

Simon and Garfunkel are like the colors blue and gold. Which is the better color? That's a silly question. Put blue and gold together and they greatly enhance each other. Paul was a great writer but his solo albums were hit and miss. Yes, he wrote Graceland (leaning HEAVILY on the music of the South African musicians!) But he also wrote One Trick Pony and CapeMan, two truly awful albums. Artie had the epic Angel Clare, then some good but not great albums, although I really enjoyed Scissors Cut and Everything Waits to be Noticed. But The Simon and Garfunkel years were the best. I admire both immensely and anyone who says one is more gifted than the other is being juvenile.

The Paul Simon lookalike is his brother, Eddie, not his dad. Eddie and Paul played together on stage at least once - Art was there too and he stepped aside while Paul and Eddie played the guitar piece called Anji together. It's on RUclips somewhere still I'd imagine, I've seen it a few times (some years ago now).

I read in the recent Paul Simon biography that Eddie is a music teacher - he's younger than Paul but apparently got into guitar far more naturally than Paul so there's a good chance he did indeed teach his older brother how to play! I agree that normally that would be a crappy thing to say, but if you ask anyone whose voice they remember, Simon's or Garfunkel's, 99.9999% of them will say Garfunkel. So, yes, he was more popular in a musical sense, but he admits that he wouldn't have had the popularity without simon's motivation and drive.
And Paul said he didn't think he'd have had the courage to go it alone because he was too shy. Art's confidence and popularity with the girls gave him the idea of them performing together. Art even said they took something from the other that made them sound good together.
As much as I loved S & G, Paul made better records on his own which got better and better and became world music - better than anyone else except Dylan & The Beatles - I love Paul Simon's music
Paul Simon’s music is boring & mediocre without Artie’s voice. Just think of Artie’s delivery of Bridge Over Troubled Water, April Come She Will, his lead vocals on American Tune & Scarborough Fair. He was always the dominant voice that the audience loved. Paul couldn’t tolerate that & that’s what drove them apart.

Actually, Art wanted to do movies 6 months out of the year while Paul Simon wrote the hits, and then Art would come back and sing for 6 months - then leave again. Paul Simon was doing all of the HEAVY work. The BOTW song did not break them up...
This clip was from a very long time ago. A more current clip has Paul saying they haven't spoken to each other in years and that he'll never work with him again. As far as I've read or heard, they are still not on speaking terms.

He has vocal paresis for the past 3 years and it was supposed to heal but his voice is still weak. He has tried to sing again in public but had to cancel a fall tour.
I remember when I was about 13 (it must've been 1974) I got BRIDGE OVER TROUBLE WATER for Christmas and I was so embarrassed. I was listening to rock by then (everyone was) and I asked my mom, how come this album? And she said, "I asked the salesman in the record section of Sears what all the kids were listening to." *face palm* I still listened to it but it didn't mean nearly what it means to me now. (Hope that guy choked on his commission lol)

Nah, you could see in this video at 11:35 how they were just tired of each other. They both wanted to decide how the song should be performed and they both wanted to be the center of attention and they'd known each other so long that they had no tolerance left for each other's disagreements. It looks to me like nobody's fault - they just couldn't work together any more.
Paul was easy to miss when they were both performing. That must be why he became such an amazing songwriter. He said everything was because he's short. People thought Art wrote the songs, so Paul couldn't easily get credit for his genius. Now they're both old, so I'm sure they're more balanced now. People have different tastes, though. I never though Art was all that hot, even back in the 60s. Sometimes the camera panned to good angles of him, and he looked pretty and angelic, but not overall. They both looked amazing in their 15-16 year old promo pics when they were Tom & Jerry, though, like teen heartthrobs. It looks like Simon got a faceful of plastic surgery, veneers, and what looks like a hair transplant in the late 70s to early 80s, so he looked good at that time.
He's saying "Arthur, Arthur" because he was referring to the standing ovations Art always received after singing Bridge Over Troubled Water. I think Paul was revealing that he felt jealous of Art in these instances without actually admitting it.

Paul Simon says at the end - if they didn't break up for personal reasons, they would have for musical. He went on to create great music (a poet and a one man band ...). Had they stayed together, there would be no graceland, and all the other gold and frankenscence.
So sad that Paul Simon chose to erase Art Garfunkels vocals from his Hearts & Bones which was to be a great album with both of them. It would have been so much more successful & the fans were waiting for another S&G album. Paul was always jealous of Artie’s superior voice.
I had a lift-back Corolla and homemade speakers way back when. It was a warm sunset in fall, drove to the end of this beautiful old rural road growing over with calf high grass, popped the back, put on "Bookends"... The love of my life was with me, I wanted to surprise her, we didnt as much "waltz" open armed to this song as much as I just pulled her into a hug and swayed until it ended.
I miss what we could have been Yvonne. For two minutes of my life I was the happiest man alive, in the right spot, right time, with the right woman... Sharing exactly the best thing ever.
Nothing else mattered and I wish time could have stopped. I hope you are blessed, wherever you are now.

Does anyone know if Paul and Eddie are maternal twins? I'll have to research this because I happen to know that Paul Simon is left-handed as I am. I've been studying left-handedness for quite a few years. And I found through medical journals and studies that it occurs more so in twins then one of the two twins will be left handed it also occurs more so yet and female twins. If you look at many of the great musicians in history, most of them are a higher percentage of left handed people.

His brother is so like him, I never thought of Paul as shy, but watching all these interviews, I can see he is a bit shy too. So both he and Art, were shy handsome young men. I love them so, and hope one day soon they will be friends again.

I saw Bob Dylan and Paul Simon at the Hollywood Bowl in 1999. Perfect June night. 6th row seats with Val Kilmer and his girlfriend a couple seats down from us, Jack Nicholson just behind us with his head thrown back the entire time with that inimitable grin. Simon played first. Dylan played next. And then they played together. Magical. Seems like another lifetime ago.

Something about the ‘harmonies’ of two people singing together, who are such opposites. Similar to the Evenly Brothers, their early inspiration. Whatever the differences, somehow musically it works as a perfect whole.

Simon and Garfunkel are like the colors blue and gold. Which is the better color? That's a silly question. Put blue and gold together and they greatly enhance each other. Paul was a great writer but his solo albums were hit and miss. Yes, he wrote Graceland (leaning HEAVILY on the music of the South African musicians!) But he also wrote One Trick Pony and CapeMan, two truly awful albums. Artie had the epic Angel Clare, then some good but not great albums, although I really enjoyed Scissors Cut and Everything Waits to be Noticed. But The Simon and Garfunkel years were the best. I admire both immensely and anyone who says one is more gifted than the other is being juvenile.

The Paul Simon lookalike is his brother, Eddie, not his dad. Eddie and Paul played together on stage at least once - Art was there too and he stepped aside while Paul and Eddie played the guitar piece called Anji together. It's on RUclips somewhere still I'd imagine, I've seen it a few times (some years ago now).

Their dad is shown in the interview, a black and white image on stage - he was a well known musician too...at least in the locality. Paul might have been there too - can't remember even though I only watched it twenty minutes ago! I read in the recent Paul Simon biography that Eddie is a music teacher - he's younger than Paul but apparently got into guitar far more naturally than Paul so there's a good chance he did indeed teach his older brother how to play!

I was thinking as well while I had nothing better to think of - Art Garfunkel is doing shows regularly again now (I've seen him once since he lost and regained his voice, at Vicar Street in Dublin) with Tab Laven on guitar. If Art had hired Eddie to play at the concerts they could have called themselves Simon and Garfunkel again! I mean, who's to know it wasn't the original Simon!

I agree that normally that would be a crappy thing to say, but if you ask anyone whose voice they remember, Simon's or Garfunkel's, 99.9999% of them will say Garfunkel. So, yes, he was more popular in a musical sense, but he admits that he wouldn't have had the popularity without simon's motivation and drive.
That’s very true! But I think they both have very recognizable and unique voices.
And Paul said he didn't think he'd have had the courage to go it alone because he was too shy. Art's confidence and popularity with the girls gave him the idea of them performing together. Art even said they took something from the other that made them sound good together.

Paul Simon’s music is boring & mediocre without Artie’s voice. Just think of Artie’s delivery of Bridge Over Troubled Water, April Come She Will, his lead vocals on American Tune & Scarborough Fair. He was always the dominant voice that the audience loved. Paul couldn’t tolerate that & that’s what drove them apart.

Paul wrote the songs but the listener isn’t thinking about who wrote the song - they are listening to the famous SINGER who delivers the beautiful sound to our ears. Does anyone think about Paul Anka when Frank Sinatra sings My Way - I doubt it. Many great singers don’t write their own songs but have wowed us with their vocals & style (Frankie Valli, Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby, Perry Como, etc.). The list goes on & on - songwriters are nothing without a great singer to deliver the words with beauty & feelings that give us goosebumps. Paul was so fortunate to have a great talent like Art Garfunkel to deliver his words on a piece of paper & bring them to the top of the charts. A voice like no other. ❤️❤️❤️

Black people changing their names wouldn't do much anyway (unless you're a biracial person that can pass for white) because they still look black. Some Jewish people who look a certain way can get away with no one knowing they're Jewish which is why some change their last name.

Turned out to be the WRONG choice. With that guitar he coughed up One Trick Pony and CapeMan and You're the One and Surprise. Garfunkel wouldn't have let him put out that garbage. Simon was hit or miss as a solo artist. Take away the S and G years and his legacy is seriously in doubt.

Actually, Art wanted to do movies 6 months out of the year while Paul Simon wrote the hits, and then Art would come back and sing for 6 months - then leave again. Paul Simon was doing all of the HEAVY work. The BOTW song did not break them up...
This clip was from a very long time ago. A more current clip has Paul saying they haven't spoken to each other in years and that he'll never work with him again. As far as I've read or heard, they are still not on speaking terms.

Kerri Wilson That’s so true Kerri. The fans loved Art’s exceptional voice & his stage appearance. I never thought Paul’s voice was anything special & he was envious of Art’s good looks. I agree that he was a great song writer but Artie made them successful - the fans love him.
Nah, you could see in this video at 11:35 how they were just tired of each other. They both wanted to decide how the song should be performed and they both wanted to be the center of attention and they'd known each other so long that they had no tolerance left for each other's disagreements. It looks to me like nobody's fault - they just couldn't work together any more.
Paul was easy to miss when they were both performing. That must be why he became such an amazing songwriter. He said everything was because he's short. People thought Art wrote the songs, so Paul couldn't easily get credit for his genius. Now they're both old, so I'm sure they're more balanced now. People have different tastes, though. I never though Art was all that hot, even back in the 60s. Sometimes the camera panned to good angles of him, and he looked pretty and angelic, but not overall. They both looked amazing in their 15-16 year old promo pics when they were Tom & Jerry, though, like teen heartthrobs. It looks like Simon got a faceful of plastic surgery, veneers, and what looks like a hair transplant in the late 70s to early 80s, so he looked good at that time.

He's saying "Arthur, Arthur" because he was referring to the standing ovations Art always received after singing Bridge Over Troubled Water. I think Paul was revealing that he felt jealous of Art in these instances without actually admitting it.
