In total, Simon & Garfunkel won ten Grammy Awards and sold more than 100 million records. They were one of the best-selling music groups of the 1960s, challenging bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. They are widely considered to be one of the best musical duos of all time. Throughout their career, their music evolved from a standard folk rock sound to a much more experimental folk rock sound, and it always seemed to particularly resonate with the alienated youth of the Baby Boomer generation. What stands out about Simon & Garfunkel are mainly two things. First, Paul’s superb songwriting abilities. And second, how both really were a yin and yang. What better evidence of this than their mastery of harmonizing together. Both made each other better, and their songs still resonate with the youth of today.
Which band or artist should I cover for this series next?
The Police
THE CLASH!!!
Or
THE ROLLING STONES!!!!!
Journey?
Iron maiden or fleetwood Mac
Metallica
In the ocean of comments asking for more bands
I just want to thank you for doing this video on my favorite band/duo. When I was ripping the music from my Dad's old CDs, S&G seemed not that interesting. However upon replaying songs I found I could listen to them over and over again and even the ones I deleted turned out to be gems.
IMHO The Boxer is their best and the rest of their songs feel like they all could be a contender for a second best.
Thanks for sharing that. Their songs are so timeless, and it makes me extremely happy to see younger folks are still discovering them and loving them.
The Boxer is my favorite song of all time. The lyrics, the melody, the instrumentation. Just perfect.
I'd just like to appreciate you for a balanced report on their relationship. So much is made of their personal conflicts making it sound like they ended up hating each other. In truth they were just very different people who had a phenomenally successful run together, and then went their separate ways.
Yep...
A David Bowie video would be stellar. There’s so much interesting stuff to talk about when it comes to him
I love David Bowie and would thoroughly enjoy making that one.
I see what u did there
I never realised that Art never changed his hair-style.
Well it wasn't quite as crazy when he was younger 😁
You can’t mess with perfection
Nor did his son
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!!
..... catch up 😂
When I was a young Kid in the 70s I used to listen to my mothers LPs. She had early Beatles, etc....and the 1972 Simon and Garfunkel best of album. That album engrossed me. I used to listen on headphones, totally absorbed. When I found out that they had broken up before I had even heard their music I felt a sense of loss that seems beyond an 8 year old. I guess kids feel more deeply than we adults can credit.
Old friends sat on their park bench like bookends ♡ I think they wrote that song at a time when they felt immortal. There's a time in our lives when we feel death is nothing but a legend.
Thanks. Paul is a great story teller, I love his lyrics and their voices harmonized so beautifully.
"The Boxer" was S&G's best, imho. I stopped into a bar after taking a final exam when I was a Jr in college. The first time I heard it played on the jukebox, I realized it was the greatest song I'd ever heard. 55 years later my opinion hasn't changed. I've seen Simon in concert a number of times. My son first heard Paul Simon in concert when he was in the womb. Now he's 42. Another great concert: Paul Simon and Bob Dylan. That one was good.
Simon and Garfunkel are always near to my heart and headphones. I saw them during the Old Friends tour. Together, they were magical, but Artie had the voice of an Angel. I wish he had chosen better writers for his solo career, though he had some fantastic tunes.
Thank you for doing my suggestion! Great job by the way! Here’s my next suggestion: The Who. They had a crazy awesome career, and really solid music. Love your channel! Have a great summer!
Well thank YOU for suggesting it. And I definitely plan on The Who at some point
@@mattbeatgoeson Awesome! Oh also, add Def Leppard to your list as well! They’re cool too.
Yes. The who
Maybe GnR
@@cadewashere3049 bruh chill lol..one at a time
I'm a massive fan of Simon and Garfunkel and a huge fan of Mr beat! Glad this video was made!!
Glad to hear it. Thank you much! :D
A Brief History of Blur or Oasis. After, do The Rolling Stones!
So many good British bands
No slipknot
Or do Van Halen, or Jimi Hendrix experience, please
Eurgh, gross!
Amazing video as always. Would love to see a Bob Dylan episode some day.
They are one of my all time favorites I have all their records.
I'd love to see you do episodes on ABBA, Bob Marley, and The Monkees
Nice suggestions!
I would die for an ABBA episode for sure
Yes, Bob Marley And The Monkeys was one of my favorite bands!!!
Hahahaha 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Totally onboard for the ABBA!!!
monkees will be interesting, great band imo
I love Simon & Garfunkel. Bridge Over Troubled Water is still my favorite song of all time.
"Both made each other better! ". Even Paul being a great songwriter, his songs don't touch our hearts without Art. And Art, although having an angelical voice, means nothing without Paul's voice and songs.
Paul was an English major and focused on his song writing while Garfunkel focused on producing , engineering and harmonies it sounds
Thank you for covering them! Such a great duo. I was actually supposed to see them live on their last tour, but the show we had was cancelled due to Art's voice issues. It's unfortunate that I will likely never see them live, but their records speak for themselves!
It wasn't a mutual break-up in 1970. Paul decided he didn't need Art anymore. With modern recording technology he could do 2 part harmonies by himself. You can hear this in several of Paul's big 70's hits like Me & Julio, Kodachrome and Late In The Evening. But he did reunite with Art for the song My Little Town which was a hit in 1974.
Mr. Beat you just kill it with everything you make. I’d feel lucky to have you as a teacher that helps you understand the truth and has fantastic music taste!
best song - the dangling conversation, best album - Wednesday Morning 3 AM
I absolutely love Simon & Garfunkel because my dad was always a big fan. I have all of their original albums on vinyl that my dad bought each one brand new when he was in high school and college. Many of their songs have apecial meanings amd memories tied to them for me.
Honestly, it doesn't matter to me which group/musician you cover. I just enjoy these videos!
Well thank you! That means a lot 😊
I just got into these guys today after hearing Scarborough fair for the first time….. thankyou for making this doc
Sound of Silence is still one of my favorite songs ever.
you gotta do a brief history of paul mccartney and the wings
Holy crap, I was just listening to Wings, no joke! They are highly underrated.
@@mattbeatgoeson as someone who has listened to all of their songs, they really are underrated, and that is saying something for a band with PAUL MCCARTNEY HIMSELF
This is a great video on an awesome duo! A video on Rush would be great, they are a phenomenal band, but they also had the same 3 members all the way through their legacy until Peart passed away, their instrumental talent is also unbelievable.
excellent work. love that you read some of the lyrics for "Punky's Dilemma" - amazing track
I’d still love to see ones on The Beach Boys, The Who, and The Monkees
Heck yeah
Rush would be a unique one, seeing that it is a Canadian band, a country that I don’t think you’ve done a video about any of their bands (I could be wrong, but I can’t think of any off the top of my head). Plus they are a great prog rock band, a genre that doesn’t normally get talked of too much.
Yep, I have yet to do a Canadian band!
Rush is so good. Top 5 band for me
YESSSSSSSS I WAS WAITING FOR THIS ONE
Great video man, thank you very much ❤
Thank you for this!
I am 47 so not old enough to have enjoyed them in their youth but have since I was a child.
Saw Paul twice right before he quit touring. The first show was an experience. Some how I scored tickets 6 rows from the stage. By the encore, which was The Boxer, I was close enough to see the individual hairs on his body through the swelling tears in my eyes.
Made several life long friendships while his music wafted around us.
Think I am going to go listen to "Diamonds on the Souls(soles) of her Shoes" now ❤
It would be Amazing if you did bands like The Doors, America, or bands like Metallica or Weezer. Keep
Up the great work!
Check out Pat Finnerty for Weezer
Saw them on SNL. Art: "So I see you've come crawling back."
WHAAT? I just discovered this channel and imagine my surprise when I heard my favorite history teacher from the internet Mr Beat is narrating! The BEAT in The Beat Goes On is the one and only Mr Beat! And he has a pop music history channel too! SUBSCRIBED!
This Is A Fabulous Video! Love Simon & Garfunkel! 💙💛✌
April Come She Will brings tears to my eyes every damn time. Of course part of the reason is it is played in Parks and Recreation, my favorite TV show, in a very emotional scene. Bridge Over Troubled Water album has the best melodies though.
They had so many aliases, can we even be sure that their real names are Simon and Garfunkel?
Awesome video. I'm 17 and they're my special interest right now.
I understand that they were going to record another studio album together after the 1981 concert in Central Park, but they had yet another falling out, and Paul Simon completed the album as the solo project "Hearts and Bones." This might have been worth mentioning.
This needs more views!
You forgot My Little Town that Paul sang with Art for Art's album. Great video!
This video was awesome! I'd love to a video on the history of the white stripes
This one was so good damn
Don't reall listen to them, but I am always up for stories of how great acts started out. Your voice also server the video really well
What a different video Mr. Beat! Have always loved Simon and Garfunkel ever since I borrowed all of their albums from my Dad growing up. My personal favorite song is Frank Lloyd Wright which is really about Simon’s relation with Garfunkel not the famous architect. Other favorites are Richard Cory and Most Peculiar Man. Still can’t believe that Simon briefly married Carrie Fisher. Would loved to have been a fly on their wall (or maybe not)!?!
Another awesome video, love the channel. Maybe a video about Fleetwood Mac,their story has alot of twists and turns
Thank you, and great suggestion!
I love Simon and Garfunkel!!
I would love to see a Tom petty or Grateful Dead episode. I’m loving these! Thank you!
These videos are amazing! I love all the details you would never find out other ways. I think you should do Aerosmith next!
Very well done.
Mr Beat made this? What a wonderful surprise.
I’d like to see a brief history of U2 in a future video
This was so interesting and gave me a much better insight into the life of Paul and Art. Love them both equally.
Great job 👏
Would love to hear what was behind them getting together again on "My Little Town" and "Wonderful World."
This was a great video..enjoyed every second of it...Still waiting for oasis
They are on my list!
Could you do a video on the Kinks? I love watching these
In My opinion Jefferson Airplane is a very underrated band with an incredible history and it should be covered in a future video.
Wow, being a big S&G fan with all their album (except Artie Garr on Octavia) your RUclips was so well done and complete! Nice job!
I appreciate the encouraging comment!
Why specifically octavia
@@tynoter8156 I have no Artie Garr records...He did two I believe, One on Warwick records and one on Octavia records. He did the same as Paul and recorded song under a pseudonym
Excellent episode of one of my favorite musical acts - I learned a lot. I was waiting for however mention of their song "My Little Town." I'd say that the Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel form the basis of my taste in music. And they both broke up the same year :(
I feel the same! The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, and Bob Dylan are to me the Holy Trinity of my music taste.
yes I too was confused that there was no mention of My Little Town. That was a new song in the early 80s that was to be the start of a new S&G album but ended up being a one-off new song they both released on solo albums. Paul played it live on his last couple of tours.
22:21 - I think my favourite Simon and Garfunkel song is probably April Come She Will. It’s a lovely song, it’s just a bit short.
Oh nice one!
Would love it if could do one on the Rollng Stones!
Great video.
Do a video about the Beach Boys, Joe Cocker, Jimi Hendrix, CSN, Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young, or Johnny Cash. Also sorry for so many suggestions
Could you also do the evolution of television shows and cartoons as well?
I'm surprised you didn't touch upon the final song they recorded together "My Little Town" which is among the darkest songs Simon ever wrote.
"Only Living Boy in New York" is my favorite S&G song as well, and I think Bookends is my favorite Album as well. though of course, I am a huge fan of Simon's solo work, considering "Graceland" to be one of the best albums of the 80's
Please do a video on The Kinks at some point!
Can you do Metallica or weezer
Or AC/DC
Yes, yes, and yes at some point 😁
@@mattbeatgoeson yay
I want episodes on Black Sabbath, Elvis Presley, KISS, and The Rolling Stones. Can you do them?
Awesome!
O’Jays should be next.
Halfway through the video I was like “this sounds like me beat!” And then I saw the name of the channel
Thank you for sharing. I am a big fan of these talented artists and always wondered what the issues were between them. I can understand now why they kept it a secret. That's embarrassing. Participating in toxic relationships is just a waste of time. Life's too short.
Maybe do metalica or Aerosmith? Idk I personally felt as if they sorta defined a generation and the genres they were going for? At least IMO. Either way do what you want, also really great vids man, hope u reach 100K soon!
THANKS
would love to see a brief history of Cream
Motley cru, Guns and Rose please and Bon Jovi please, Kiss!!!!
I know everything there is to know about them, but I rlly just want a video on them!
People will love a video on them!
I would like to see a video about Yes. It’s my favorite band
Perhaps a history of the jackson5-jacksons would be interesting
What about Wishbone Ash? I just stumbled again over them, like I do every 3 years... :-)
The Talking Heads would be cool
Great suggestion!
Love some Simon & Garfunkel. Never knew their history so this is very interesting. 👍 (small pedantic note: It’s Chesher rather than Chesh-eye-er😎).🙂
I love to see an history of Van Halen, EVH is a guitar virtuoso imo.
I think a episode about SOAD or Cream would be cool
My dad was at the Central Park concert
Good video! In the late '60's, I would have called "Simon and Garfunkle" my favorite band. Since then, I have veered into Hillbilly Music, with lots of pedal steel, but I still greatly enjoy many of "Simon and Garfunkle's" songs.
The biggest musical influence that "Simon and Garfunkle" had in my circle of friends, was Paul's use of finger-picking the guitar, instead of just strumming the guitar.
--- Finger-picking resulted in songs, sounding much more MUSICAL, while strumming sounded boooooooring.
--- In the early 70's, Simon's finger-picking songs were the RAGE among my friends.
--- About 15 years later, the first guitar tune I taught my eldest son, was "Scarborough Fair", my son LOVED IT, and then he continued to forge his own path.
--- Ironically, one of my favorite "S&G" songs, is STILL the not-finger-picking "Richard Cory".
Rock
My favorite also.
I think these may have the record for breaking up then getting back together regardless they made some classic tracks
It would be great if you could create an episode for Rush
how did i just realize this was Mr beat
can anyone recommend their song for me? I recently listened to bridge over troubled water, I need a song that calms me
Please do a Brief History on KOrn, that would be awesome
"I Am A Rock" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water"
Solo: Art: "When Someone Doesn't Want You" and "Angel Clare"; Paul: "Kodachrome"and "There Goes Rhymin' Simon" 🎶🎶🎶
Do The Who! Excellent history!
You should do Michael Jackson
Absolutely, although I might wait awhile before I make it.
Yes indeed
Hey, Mr. Beat. Can you please do a video on a brief history of Madonna?
Do a brief history of metallica!
Right on!
You have to make a "A Brief History of Foo Fighters"
