July 1970, FSB Mary Ann, Vietnam, A Co. 1/46th Infantry was having a bad time out in the bush, with several casualties, when somebody broke in on the radio, saying "3-6 Whiskey, this is for you," and played this song. I will NEVER forget it. It moves me to tears even today.

We are so privkedged to have lived in this time. I’m 72 so I lived thru it. These guys, James Taylor, Beatles, Stones, Animals, CSN & Y, just in & on & on. & on. Every days was like Christmas w/all the new music. Look at. Eric Clapton! How many bands was he in? Like 10!! Oh brother, never again, not like the BLATHER being spit out now. No sir, give me the 60’s & 70’s!!!

Paul Simon is one of the greatest song writers of the 20th Century. But I have to say, I respect him immensely for knowing to let Art Garfunkel sing it. He openly states that he felt (at the time) that it was the best thing he had ever written and yet he let Art sing it. THAT is real class in my opinion.
The version of this song in The Concert in Central Park is beyond legendary. But then again, that entire concert is legendary.
And yet Art would sing it and never once acknowledged to an audience that Paul wrote it....

@@suehaden6103 I have never listened to a solo Garfunkel concert so maybe those are what you have in mind, but I've listened to most every S&G concert that's available on the internet and Art always, Always finds a chance to mention that all the songs are written by Paul.
I’m glad that Paul Simon decided to have Art sing it. It truly is one of my favourite ever. Paul as the writer and Art’s voice was the best partnership in making beautiful music!

I've often thought of this song especially after my husband died of Covid. Whenever I felt afraid because of being alone; it was like the Lord Jesus was singing it to me. It brought comfort to me.

Very difficult to argue against this. I've heard many renditions of BOTW and to my ear, all sound inadequate compared to S&G's original.
This is the most religious song I have ever heard. Played at my mother-in-laws funeral, because she was a silver girl and very protective of her family. To this day, I picture her singing this to us from heaven.
My husband bought me this album when we first met, because we we both loved this song. I played it at his funeral 41 years later. His headstone has the phrase " like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down"❤
This was my mom's favorite song of all time. Just before she passed away, we (my 3 siblings and I) were at her bedside. We wanted to let her know it was ok to let go. I pulled up Bridge on my phone and played it for her. When it ended, she whispered, "Again." After the song ended the second time, I leaned in, kissed her on the forehead and whispered, "Sail on silver girl... All your dreams are on the way..." She passed a minute later. I can't ever listen to the song now without crying. Crying right now in fact. But they're lovely bittersweet tears remembering the moment. I was holding my mom's hand the whole time and I can still feel her hand in mine. I'd love to thank Paul Simon for writing the song and Art Garfunkul for his hauntingly beautiful vocals.

I have a younger sister that was going through her teenage to young women phase. She knew I was always there for her. She was very shy. She admired me and wanted to be like me. It was kind of like she stood behind me watching and learning. One night we were at a club and I was watching her dance. She had very long blond hair and the spotlight shining on it made it look silver. As she danced I thought about the song and the last verse. With a tears in my eye I thought " Sail on silver girl sail on buy", as in coming out from behind me. "Your time has come to shine all your dreams are on there way" she didn't need to hide behind me anymore but if she needed me I would be sailing right behind. This has been our song and her daughter feels the song also fits her and me because she knows she can always depend on me to be there for her.

This was our wedding song in 1970. Family and friends thought that it was a strange choice, but my wife and I never questioned it. Over the years, whenever we would hear it, we would stop to listen. At least one of us would fill up. I lost my wife one year ago, and this now has a new poignancy for me. God blessed us throughout our lives with this truly inspired song.

I believe God gave this song to Paul because he knew a lot of people needed to hear it. And still need to today. And he had Art to sing it, which was maybe the only man who could.
This is NOT a little hymn, Paul. It is an anthem. And a work of true art. Thank you 🙏🏻 for putting these words and music together for generations to hear, feel and connect to something much bigger than ourselves.
I read something about an interview with Paul Somon and they asked him why he kept Art around because he, Paul, could sing and play. And Paul replied, "Art sings the songs like I hear them sung in my mind".. I thought that was brilliant!

Paul Simon is one of the best popular songwriters of our generation. And if the only song he ever wrote was this one, he would still be.
A troubled generation needed to hear these words, thus Paul was given the inspiration.
They just don't have artists like this anymore. These are two of the greats. This era of music can never be replaced, and never ever topped.

That is so true. I don’t listen to much modern music. Too much banging and clanging. Like they are trying to drown out the sorrows of this world instead of accepting and embracing them! I can’t even think when the junk of today comes on. I just got hooked on Adagio in G minor and of course there nothing more powerful than listening to Pavarotti singing Nessun Dorma! And THIS that Mr. Simon gave so little credit to is a masterpiece that touches the soul.

I think God knew the world needed this song. He sent it to us through a greatly talented and slightly bewildered musician. They say He works in mysterious ways.
As much as I view RUclips every day, this is my very first comment. I was a very introverted 15 year old girl who felt very left out of life when I first heard this song on the radio and it became my song. I bought the LP and played it over and over on Daddy's stereo at night gazing out into the night. I wanted to be a Silver Girl with somebody following behind me. BOTW followed me all my life and never lost it's power over me as my soul song. Other songs came and had their day and went, yet this one stayed with me. Now I am nearly 66, and they can play it at my funeral. Paul thanks so much for writing Bridge Over Troubled Water and submitting it. It has had a lifetime effect on this one little girl!..... Linda

My mother wanted this played at her memorial in 1997. I get very emotional every time I hear it. Art has the voice of an angel. And Paul is sheer genius.
Paul and Art sang so many wonderful songs together, but Bridge over Trouble Water was so moving and almost haunting in the way it touches one's feelings. To this day it still gives me chills when listening to it. Paul's song writing abilities really came out in this song, and Art's voice is so masterful.
First time I remember hearing the song, was riding back home with My Grandfather on a Country Road, after visiting an Uncles Dairy Farm. My Grandfather was about 70, and He liked Simon and Garfunkel and played them loud in His 66 Plymouth Fury! I always liked Simon and Garfunkel myself as well!
My Dad had a green 66 Plymouth Fury 4 door. I traveled alot of miles in the back of that car listening to the radio and choking on cigarette smoke...

In between- as an adult- I had suffered 17 years of severe brain trauma from psychological abuse as a child. I'm healed today-- and I encourage others whenever I find discouragement in a person. I"ve always been an encourager even in the dark times because of moments like Bridge Over Troubled Water when 8- it put something in me that was missing--it gave me hope. As a retired university music professor and professional musician of almost 50 years, Bridge Over Troubled Water has been hands down the best contemporary song I have ever heard, let alone had the privilege to perform. Thank you for this valuable insight.
Hearing Paul Simon recount his process, I recognize how it mirrors that of Mozart to a T. In terms of the composition itself, the strength of the melodic line combined with its length (longer than that of pop music of the time) directly reflects the melodies of Mozart's multitude of works, both operatic and instrumental - which have and continue to resonate deeply with people around the world now for over 250 years.

Adding my own story: This was my grandmother's favorite song. When she was in hospice, I left long enough to go buy the greatest hits CD, and she, too, was able to leave this world accompanied by this amazing and beautiful song. It will always make me cry. Sail on, silver girl.

Yes!! I always got that from this song too! Lyrics like: "I'll take your part" as Jesus took our punishment. And "Like a bridge..." as Jesus is our only bridge to Father God in Heaven.

Also, the part where they talk about the title first being incorrectly called, "Like a pitcher of water." As soon as I heard that, my first thought was how Jesus said he was to be poured out for us, like it was prophesied in the Psalms:

Everybody in comments is forgetting to include Larry on the Piano. I think without that, the song would have never been as big as it was. It was a great song but the piano really gave it a shot in the arm. You dont hear many pop songs being played in churches but Ive heard this one played in them many times over the years. Then Larry went on to write the guitar solo on one of Breads biggest songs "The Guitarman" after he joined Bread as their Bass player. He was a great musician as well.
The piano touches my soul as much as the words sung by the only perfect voice who could do it.

I have been unapologetically in love with Bridge Over Troubled Water since I was a very young woman. I still weep when I hear it. It touches my life experiences, hopes dreams and prayers. I am decades past being that young woman and I pray that I am never too advanced in years to feel my heart yearning and to cry.
I believe God put those words in Simon’s thoughts to write a song of deep loving comfort for those who needed to hear those words.

This song got me thru the recovery of being a child of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. That and, I am an island. It saved me and helped me continue to have compassion. It helped me be willing to be a mother. I can't explain how strongly it resonated with me in the late 80s. It was the warmth I needed when I was alone in foster care. It makes me cry to this day because it was my life. I was the one that was there for everyone but no one was there for me. It's taken 50 years, but my wounded child's soul has healed and I have a small wonderful family that I love deeply. Thank you for this wonderful gift at a time when I needed it.

You know there has been so much written about and famous artists have talked about the fact that they know how much some of these songs mean to people. From weddings, funerals, graduations, making out in the back seat, watching a sunset, party's and so on and so on. These songs are the soundtracks of our lives. Thank you for sharing that moment.

I have always felt that this song was a message from God and Jesus and have always obtained such comfort from it. It is wonderful to hear that it does seem to be divinely inspired. We were on a trip to DC a few years ago over Memorial Day and walking by the Capitol. Suddenly we heard the song! Art Garfunkel was practicing the song for the evening’s concert. I agree. There was a solemnity to the entire experience and the gospel music influence and simple lyrics just go straight for the heart. It's like an expression of agape love, a beginning of a description. What if Christian musicians after it was released closed the circle by adopting the song back into expressions of Christ-like love to others (I feel South-Korean singer, Sohyang, seemingly did in her version, though more musically bombastic).
All these songs are such a gift. We are so privileged to have lived through all this great music. It was such a joy and comfort to me growing up.

The last years of my Dad's life were very challenging after my Mom passed away. He was lonely, and for whatever reason, the other family members, although I truly believe they had a great love for him, hardly ever made time to call or visit. During those years, a day never went by that we didn't talk on the phone, nor did a weekend ever pass that I didn't visit. One time we were driving to our favorite restaurant when Bridge Over troubled Waters came on the radio. When it ended, my Dad told me it was his favorite song and that I was his Bridge Over Troubled Waters. It was a lovely compliment, and now, all these years later, whenever I hear it, I always think of my Dad. We were great friends!

I've never been impressed with Amazing Grace, seems overrated, but this song is truly impressive.
I was fortunate to be in my late teens when the song came out and like most of us teenagers - we knew this song was magical and that it would be a big hit, I am now 70 years of age and I still sing it to myself when walking in the hills in my beautiful Scotland! The singing, the piano etc was just fantastic, even my Grand children sing this song, they as a group were as famous as the Beatles back then! Sending love to you guys! Great job!

It's a "Humbling" song.
I did a large portrait of a woman’s face lying down in pinks a and magentas. I titled it SAIL ON SILVER GIRL AND ETCHED THE TITLE IN THE WORK.
I was fortunate enough to see the boys perform in concert back in 2003. When Artie stood at the edge of the stage, and sang this song, it was like magic.
I was maybe 12 years old at the time. My father had just recently killed himself. This song lifted me up so many times when I was down that I don’t know what I would have done without it. I had no idea how magical the music was at that time because I was too young to have any other reference. Paul Simon was young too. How did he do it? It’s nice to see he had a team of believers.
Came out during a sad and lonely time in my life as well--though not as tragic as yours.
Respects for making it through such a raw situation at such a young age. That has to be one of the hardest things to learn to accept as real. To me, this song is the audio equivalent of a feather duvet with a fleece cover on a cold night. You can wrap it around yourself. For a little bit, you can feel safe and protected, snuggled deep and warm in the music. It carries some of the pain with it's last fading notes. We still have the same problems as 5 minutes before, just a little bit easier to carry. Music is as close to magic as us mere muggles can preform.

I was 9 years old when this record came out. I heard the vocals, especially Art Garfunkels and thought "That is what angels sound like when they sing in heaven" I have no idea why I thought that but the thought stuck with me for all these years.
I was a little girl when this came out. It is so beautiful and has brought me to tears so many times. Life is better because of songs like this. Thank you.

I’ve always loved this song but it means so much more to me now. I suffer from Post Traumatic Stress from 24 years as a professional firefighter. The words resonate with me as I’ve had help and am now helping other firefighters get over that bridge.

At that same time, my grandfather died. I was very close with him. This song played on the radio in the limo on the way to his funeral. I was inconsolable. This song always reminds me of that day.
This comment made me cry. I associate certain songs with my mother and fathers death too. This was one of my mother’s favorite songs.

As I layed with him and held his hand In His final hours, I too played this song....it is a beautiful song with beautiful lyrics...and even though i had literally not thought about or listened to the song in many years, that is the song I played and will forever hold dear in my heart......
The simplicity of the lyrics is the genius of it. Writing complicated lyrics is easy. Saying something in a new way, simply, is what makes great songs great songs.
This duo had several very memorable songs, perfectly executed. They were special.
Rolling Stone magazine called it perfect. And perfectly arranged and recorded. It is stunning.
I love the way Paul expresses himself......thoughtfully, deliberatively, and with no hype.

It was written specifically for Garfunkel, who initially said No. You sing it. Weird but true.

Paul created the rough draft, number of musicians polished it to perfection, Art...gave it the heart and soul and life to live eternally.
Paul Simon is Mozart, Lenon, Bach, Mercury, Beethoven and Elton John. Paul is the single best singer/song writer of my lifetime. Nobody is better. Nobody.
I'd put Dylan there or McCartney but I'm inching towards Simon as being the greatest. I'm 36 and really got into Simon a year ago. He's one of a kind and methodical in his writing and melodies. I admire that craftsmanship. I'll continue to listen.
When I first heard this song, I am about 17, and now I am nearly 70, too good, one of the great songs in the world.
I was 15 years old and my mother died. Every time I hear this song my eyes always fill up with tears. It is and was so powerful for me back then. It is and always will be a perfect song. Just magnificent. Thank You, what talent and Genius. Thank God I was brought up in a time when all these musicians back then were writing music with such style and originality.
I'm with you Eddiewhaler, I was also fairly young when my grandmother passed (my mothers mother). This was one of her favorite songs so they played it at her funeral. I also get teary eyed when I hear it too because it reminds me of her.
eddiewhaler, sorry for your loss. But I totally agree with you. This song is very powerful and when a song like this gets tied to something very personal to you, it causes it to become even moreso. I have found that being able to find songs such as this that you can latch onto can also help you to first be able to deal with, and then able to remember with such emotion that it will be a part of you for the rest of your life.
I have a similar story. I almost bust into tears when ever I hear the first few notes...

About two or three years ago, there was an exhibit about you at the Jewish Museum of Maryland in Baltimore on Lloyd street. (kind of in the downtown area) My girlfriend told me about it. Sorry I didn't see it, but as I was told, it had one of your first guitars, a letter from summer camp......that's all I remember.
I play the "Sounds of Silence" on the harmonica. What a song, as is: "Bridge Over Troubled Waters." Now I'm not going to leave my girlfriend, but I like the song "Fifty ways to leave your Lover" "Just slip out the back Jack, "Make no plans Stan", "Drop off the key Lee" and set yourself free. All your songs have so much feeling and meaning.
When I had a chance to call in into the hospital where my father was passing, I played this and told him he was always my bridge over troubled water, and how knowing he was there, allowed me to be very brave in the world.

Larry Knechtel's piano on this took the song to the next level. It set the stage for the entire recording. His work with BREAD also made them a better band when he joined them! RIP LK!
Absolutely. It was Larry Knechtel's piano work that made this song a masterpiece, and he deserved to have songwriting credit for this unique and stunning contribution. Art Garfunkel also had a lot of input into things as well.

It’s amazing how many songs The Wrecking Crew, of which Larry was a member, took to the next level due to those studio musicians’ skill and creativity.
