Kinda late to make this comment but I just realized that Black Sigil is NOT a JRPG. It is a Canadian RPG, that's right, made by Canadians, not Japanese. Haha. It shouldn't have been on this video.
I quite admire Black Sigil, but you are correct that the encounter rate is way too high. If you have a device or program that can apply Action Replay codes to the game, there exists a code that substantially reduces the rate. The default rate is 220481EC 0000000F. Replace the 0F at the end with a higher value to reduce the rate. The value I found that works to my personal liking is 220481EC 00000044. There are also codes that multiply the gold and exp gains in battle, which I feel serve as a nice counterpart to balance the encounter rate code. I felt a 2x multiplier struck a good balance. 12034ADC 00002083 is the code for 2x exp. 2x gold has three lines of code- 5202E6A0 E51F1EA0 0202E6A4 E0822085 D2000000 00000000 When Capcom ported the first two Breath of Fire games to the GBA, they actually made similar alterations. Reducing the encounter rate by a considerable amount while multiplying exp by 2x and gold by 3x. The ports are much less tedious and grindy than the SNES originals. Black Sigil is a similar case, dramatically improved by the above codes. Turning a good but flawed and sometimes tedious game into a surprisingly great one that stands among some of the better 16 bit classics.
Black Sigil was one of my favorite on the Nintendo Ds. With it's story, art style, and environment it was great. Sure it's tedious and can be hard, but the way game feels is a lot of fun.
Nice video Hey Eric I have few video ideas to for you in jrpg’s: -Best twisted plots in jrpg -Top love stories -Top multiple endings -Most unique battle systems in jrpg
While i agree about the video about being great, I'm not really sure for some ideas. When Erick make his jrpg videos, he tends to make it non-spoiler as much as possible. And being able to make a list of top endings will require him to playthrough all of them & finish all the games regardless if he enjoys or not just to be able to formulate his own opinion on the ending which can be really hard on his part, and again could potentially spoil. Even researching the facts about ending could also hurt himself for being spoiled.
Hey, guys, thank you so much for your feedback. I welcome all sorts of ideas. Multiple endings is something I can do without spoilers; I've played enough JRPGs with various endings and I think I can do it without spoilers. Most unique battle systems is also a must! Thanks for that idea! The other two, well, they would indeed become videos with spoilers so I might think a little bit more about those. Thanks again!
Definitly good ideas, even more so because of his personnal opinions (like in his list about games he loves nobody else does). There are many JRPGs I didn't play because of critics I checked again thanks to his video and it could highlight good reasons to play "over hated" games.
Izuna was fun. It's a decent roguelike with a fun story. There is apparently a really deep weapon upgrade system that I never figured out - maybe the manual explains it. I liked Izuna's character. There are sexy bits in Izuna 1, too.
I... I'm sad to inform you there's multiple GBA games. Boktai and Boktai 2 are around in english, but the third one, Shin Bokura No Taiyou, has an english patch around, just don't translate the name entry and menus too as those patches breaks the password system and game saving at the very end and locks out the NG+ stuff.
Real good content, glad I checked my recommendations ;) fun fact, I don't see any french videos in my recommendations anymore (kinda sad). I wanted to check if people knew Avalon Code ? If not, it might be worth checking out (for NDS JRPG fans). I got it as import that a friend sent me and I loved it, if you don't know, the main gimmick is that the bottom screen is a book holding information about everything in the game : NPCs, monsters, items... And you can swap attributes from a page to another making an invincible enemy vulnerable to fire, etc. It plays like an action rpg.
another reason the Fossil Fighters games might be unknown is Nintendo's lack of advertising for them. The 1st 2 entries on DS are some of my favorite games....too bad they really dropped the ball with the 3rd game on 3DS.
Hey man! i'm new to your channel. So far, so good! You have really cool videos. Keep it up! About "The Dark Spire", i tryed really really hard to like that game and enjoy it, but it has to much empty places and hidden rooms that have nothing in them. It's like you explore and explore, to discover that there's nothing in the dungeon.
Thank you very much for your feedback. Yes, what you say about The Dark Spire is true; that's why I didn't put it on the hidden gems video, because it has tons of problems, hahaha.
-Fossil fighters -fossil fighters champions -Black sigil -knights in the nightmare -lunar knights -izuna legend of the unemployed ninja -izuna 2 -the dark spire -dungeon explorer -the wizard of oz beynod the yellow brick
Was this game only released in NA or in EU, too? I love the WOZ version of 1939 - R.I.P. last munchkin Jerry Maren - and it looks really good. Do I need an American DS or is a European DS enough?
well Eric, I would highly recommend you play the Knights in Nightmare on PSP, it doesn't uses stylus but rather the control stick. It is one of the most innovative and deepest games out there. I too hated the stylus, though.
it seems you don't like rogue-like rpgs, and don't even call them that way. but since there are just a few games on the genre, each one coming out its like a gem just by existing. i beat izuna twice, and i think its very good, the seal system for enhancing weapons is the best thing about the game, and what makes it a little different from other rogue-likes. i also beat zhp unlosing ranger in psp, that one i think is the best game in the genre because of all the customization you get. rogue-like are different from classic and tacticals rpgs in that you need to adapt constantly to random situations (maps, enemies and items available), and that feature makes them addictive and always entertaining.
I appreciate this list as I'm going through library of DS games and trying out new things, I'm really into luminous Arc 2 as well as summon Night and lunar Knights. It sounds like you kind of don't like a lot of the games you list though as you point out how tedious or boring they are often lol
Yeah, that's why I always try to make a hidden gems video and also a most unknown video for every console, to separate the lesser known games that I think are good from the ones that are not that good.
Boktai and Lunar Knights are the best games I have ever played on theme of ambientation, the only one thats weaker is the secuel, but as I saw the on the 3th the thing got hard there
maybe if someone someday can make a romhack of Black Sigil reducing Its encounter rate and regulating the difficulty, then the game would be fully enjoyable.
Lol I was shocked to see the wizard of OZ I picked it up for a friends kids bday think I may keep it for my self lol and get something else it was just $2 lol
The Izuna games look a lot like the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games, and that's a good thing to me! I'm also gonna check out Wizard of Oz because that's a great idea. And Dorothy (or whatever her name is in this version) is cute. And it makes sense that there's finally a JRPG about the story because it's probably one the first isekai in the West.
It's the same subgenre (Mystery Dungeon), like Shiren and Torneko (Only Torneko: The Last Hope was released outside Japan). Also, Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Curry God, and Etrian Mystery Dungeon. The subgenre was popular in Japan before Pokemon made it relatively popular everywhere. Which is why many of the games are Japanese only, specially the older ones.
Fossil Fighters is a fun game. It was not released over here but i was lucky enough to get it very cheap recently. I like the Part where you clean up the Fossils. Overall its a good game. To bad over here we only got the 3DS Game of the Series :/ Black Sigil looks so amazing. Just like the old 16 Bit SNES RPG Games It was also not released over here. That makes it hard to come by and very expensive :/ Never even heard of Nights in the Nightmare. Again not released over here :P Good thing the DS has no Region Lock. But shipping makes it so damn expensive to import Games. Lunar Knights is awesome. Back in the Days. I loved the Boktai Series. Even so i mostly play my Handheld Games in the Dark^^ Thats why Lunar Knights ist probably my favorite of it XD Izuna was for a change released over here. But very very limited. Thats why it is very hard to come by. And it is not cheap. 40-50 bucks and more is not uncommon for it(which is quite much for a DS Game). I dont have it yet. Cant say much about it. But i like Dungeon Crawler. Couldnt find a Copy of Dungeon explorer yet. One day i thought i had. But it was just an empty case. Then the guy gave it to me for free. Now all i can comment on is how the Boxart looks.....its..okay ^^ The Wizard of Oz Game looks amazing. (Again not released here :P) 3D Games on the DS can be a mixed bag. But this one is not that bad.
Black sigil, you had so much potential, why did u waste it?!!It pains me that i had to put this game down because i love rpgs with underdog protagonists(thanks to saga frontier 2),but the encounter rate was simply unbearable.Later in the game,u can get a ring that reduces encounter rate by half,so i tried...i tried..but i couldn't take it until then.Worse battle rate than breath of fire 2,who the hell thought this is good? -Knights in the nightmare:I couldn't understand the battle system either,it was a big clusterfuck already and the stylus made it much worse -Izuna the unemployed ninja:This game is ok and the humorous tone is welcome,it's just a good game.I like those 2 games more because they remind me of Azure dreams but, really,no game of the same style has come close to the greatness of azure dreams as of yet. -The dark spire:Not a fan of dungeon crawlers, tried the game,it's ok but if i wanna play a dungeon crawler i will choose the much better(in my opinion) Etrian odyssey series. -THERE IS AN RPG BASED ON THE WIZARD OF OZ?!!!!
Izuna was very fun. I liked that it was a roguelike with progression. Very forgettable story though. The Dark Spire was good, and like you said had amazing music. But the game was way too brutal and grindy. I don't think I made it pas floor 2.
Knights in the nightmare is so fucking amazing, its so fucking hard at first but then it gets easy to understand, the story is SOOO FUCKING KOOL but discontinued and thrown away ;-;
Kinda late to make this comment but I just realized that Black Sigil is NOT a JRPG. It is a Canadian RPG, that's right, made by Canadians, not Japanese. Haha. It shouldn't have been on this video.
That Wizard of OZ game graphically looks absolutely amazing.
I quite admire Black Sigil, but you are correct that the encounter rate is way too high. Number 3 has one of the most amazing soundtracks in videogames. I love the battle theme, which you put at the intro of your video!
Yes, it's truly a great OST indeed.
Nice video
Hey Eric I have few video ideas to for you in jrpg’s:
-Best twisted plots in jrpg

Oh Boktai! The GBA game was awesome with the "sunlight Gun" which you had to charge in sunlight
Thanks to your videos, I've played several great games, thank you Erick.
No problem, thank you for watching :)

Avalon Code? Check out the video that I will upload next tuesday ;)
i feel like i remember everybody having a copy of Lunar Knights when the DS came out.
I own Lunar Knights, very good game though I haven't played it in years it was fun from what I remember
Coolest thing of D's is they're bringing back ps2 rpg
You have me interested, could you tell me exemples please ? I only know Disgaea DS.
knights in the nightmare is awesome but i lost the game before i got the chance to finished it
Just download emulator on your phone or pc
company known for creating unknown games xD hahah it made my day
Yeah, check out their library and all of their games are really unknown.
another reason the Fossil Fighters games might be unknown is Nintendo's lack of advertising for them. The 1st 2 entries on DS are some of my favorite games....too bad they really dropped the ball with the 3rd game on 3DS.

-izuna legend of the unemployed ninja
-izuna 2
-the dark spire

-the wizard of oz beynod the yellow brick
In that Wizard of Oz game, watching Dorothy Run reminds me of Sonic the Hedgehog for some reason. LoL!
Was this game only released in NA or in EU, too? I love the WOZ version of 1939 - R.I.P. last munchkin Jerry Maren - and it looks really good. Do I need an American DS or is a European DS enough?
@@christianappel1998 I think American DS games work on European DSs; iirc, regular DS games are region-free.
well Eric, I would highly recommend you play the Knights in Nightmare on PSP, it doesn't uses stylus but rather the control stick.
It is one of the most innovative and deepest games out there. I too hated the stylus, though.
I kinda had the feeling that the PSP version would be superior. Sooner or later I'm gonna have to download it and play it.
Erick Landon RPG glad to hear that.

I just finish it yesterday

Boktai and Lunar Knights are the best games I have ever played on theme of ambientation, the only one thats weaker is the secuel, but as I saw the on the 3th the thing got hard there
I've got Dark Spire going on the side; got to level 4 so far
The Wizard of Oz one is great. I actually like how it's an RPG based on a kids book
Izuna is one of the few games that was like Torneko on PS1,so i kinda liked it.
I didn't know there was a 4 installment to Boktai :O i might just check it out now!
maybe if someone someday can make a romhack of Black Sigil reducing Its encounter rate and regulating the difficulty, then the game would be fully enjoyable.
You sound like nervous whenever in camera, but great vids, I req u should do top 5 hack and slash DS games
Lol I was shocked to see the wizard of OZ I picked it up for a friends kids bday think I may keep it for my self lol and get something else it was just $2 lol
1:47 my thoughts exactly xD - i was first here! - no, gimme this fossil! - shovel smmaashu!

I love fossil fighters dude fingers crossed for a forth game
Fourth? Is there actually a third game?!
Erick Landon RPG yeah it came out on the 3ds it’s ok but they changed up a lot of the original mechanics that made the first two so charming
Oh, I see. Thanks for the info.
Black sigil is pain in the ass..
they really need to get better with rpg graphics
eat a churro
