JRPGs! I used to not like playing on handhelds but I had to adapt. I noticed in recent years the amount of quality portable JRPGs has been on the rise. Continues on with the 3DS and I also need to get my hands on Vita. I'm actaully playing the 3DS version of Devil Survivor right now.
Gotta be JRPGs. There are just so many exclusives on the DS/3DS (and handhelds in general, like the PSP) that you just don't find on consoles anymore (especially SRPGs, other than Disgaea).
I remember when the DS first came out, I thought "well, this looks nice, but once the PSP comes out, everyone's gonna forget about this console."...Boy, how wrong I was years later. It looks like history is repeating itself too, with the 3DS and the Vita.
Edit: I realize now, that I replied to a 6 year old comment. Whoops.... ____ I'd say the PSP faired pretty dang well though. Burnout, 3 full GTA games, Jak and Daxter stuff, Ratchet and Clank, the many other racing games, God of War, Tekken, the PSP exclusive Naruto fighters. I even personally had a few of the movies. And as an emulation machine with custom firmware, the PSP was fuckin bananas. DS was fun, I had it too. But I mostly remember playing Pokemon Pearl, Mario 64, and Mario Kart on it. Might have had a YuGiOh too. And they were a ton of fun...but I was never massively into the whole touch screen, dual screen gimmick. I just like having buttons and a single screen. Nothing wrong with a classic.
I completed 'Hotel Dusk: Room 215' recently. The art in that game kicks so much ass IMHO. There is a sequel called 'Last Window: The Secret of Cape West' but it only came out in Europe and Japan. :( I hope to see 'Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ' in a future video.
One of my favorite series on all of youtube is your hidden gem series! I am glad that your doing the ds because I don't give my ds enough love :). By the way I also recently started listing to the pod cast and I must say you guys rock! Keep up the great work man!
I just found this channel and I really enjoy your content. It's really helping me with buying games. I have ds but I have only 6 games I've kept since my first ds lite in 2007. I've never played any anime or Japanese style or rpg games. I want to expand my game categories so I can experience more types of games :D

Rhapsody is a remake from the PSOne version, just like Hoshigami Remix and Final Fantasy III. I hope to eventually get SMT: Devil Summoner, but it might have gone up just like Luminous Arc since many JRPGs off the handheld seem to run only a limited supply. I have to admit I still have Dragon Ball Origins 1 and 2, and Inu Yasha DS is held as my favorite nostalgic game on the DS. Phoenix Wright and Trauma Center series, along with the amazing Hotel Dusk which hardly anyone might have even looked at if not for the hyped reviews it received. One of my favorites still is Etrian Odyssey series even though it had a cool novelty mapping system, but that is all it was - just novelty. So many great DS games, and yet the software seems to run more dry as it gets into 3DS even though they still have great games. DS Lite - Favorite handheld system to date, 3DS a close 2nd.
Awesome video, the DS is really a game I need to get into more and this is a helpful list for that for sure! I have played Nanostray and really enjoyed it, but it did kick my ass, never found a copy for myself though. Never played, or even heard of, most of the others. One to mention sometime, and I kind of suspect you will, is Dark Spire. Awesome RPG.

Awesome, thank you for doing this and looking forward to you hopefully covering the great Dragon Quest games and Final Fantasy games that finally got a release stateside on the DS.....pst, no DSi XL when you were covering the hardware?
Hey now, I cover them there overlooked DS gems, and no one can because I say so! Still, kind of hard to believe the system is almost a decade old. Good things tend to last a long time, but still.
Oh lord... the memories... I played room 215 (one of my favorite games on the ds) on my purple velvet DSi... I loved that system, it took me through some really tough times, but eventually I had to sell it because I was flat broke. I've been regretting this decision ever since. I now have a black DSi, which is pretty cool, but my purple velvet beauty will always stay in my heart.

Wow man! I've been a viewer for 12 years now!? I now use your channel as a resource for scouring for hidden gems and unknown/forgotten games and....also nostalgia haha! I'm a 33 year old, new father of 1 and I just wanted you to know how OG you have become on RUclips and how coveted you have become to me and my inner bubble. You are an absolute joy and a beautiful human being. That includes your circle of friends also. They are all exceptional people!
It's a complete reboot of the series. That and the new Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams game are reinventions to the original. The DS game can get a bit repetitive, but it's really fun and has amazing music. I had to order my copy off Amazon as it had such a low print run. But because it's so unknown, it's definitely a hidden gem.
Dongled Newegg was where it was originally being sold, and that's where a friend of mine got me my copy. He gave it to me as a birthday present and said "Now I trust you know the history of this game.".
I never played the original but I was pretty disappointed by the DS game. The controls weren't tight and the bosses and level design were all the same. Pretty dull
Nice. I love Retro Game Challenge. Have you ever watched any episodes of GameCenter CX on youtube? It's what the game is based on and it's highly entertaining.
Glory of Heracles - The first game in a Japan-only RPG franchise to be released in North America. "Average at best" is what the few people who've heard about it seem to think, but I absolutely loved it. It's one of the better RPGs I've played, with some of the best storytelling and soundtrack in an RPG. Golden Sun: Dark Dawn - Golden Sun has never been the most popular RPG franchise, but it's my favorite (although I'm still waiting on that 4th game). Dark Dawn, the 3rd game in the series, is a game many fans of the series write off as sub-par to the original 2 games, which I agree with completely. While the first 2 on the GBA were 9.5/10 material, Dark Dawn was closer to an 8/10, which is still better than many, many RPGs out there. Although the story gets incredibly interesting the further you get into the game, awkward dialogue and storytelling mixed with too-easy combat kept it from being as good as the first 2. It still has MANY amazing moments, amazing music, a convoluted but interesting and epic story (even more-so than the first 2), amazing puzzles, and one of the BEST climaxes of any game I've played. Ninja Town (which I'm so happy you guys mentioned) - I love tower defense-style games, and Ninja Town is one of the best! Phantasy Star 0 - I haven't played the other games in the Phantasy Star series, but I really liked this game, which a lot of people say is the worst in the franchise. It can get a little repetitive and annoying at times, but it's a fun little time-killer nonetheless. Teenage Zombies - I freaking hated this game, but my sister was obsessed with it back in the day, so I'll mention it. It's a strange little platformer with cutscenes shown in a comicbook style. You take control of three different zombies with different abilities to traverse the levels, getting powerups and eating the "brainmeats" of aliens who are trying to take over the world.
The Nintendo DS is one of my all time favorites, and an amazing system to collect for since there are so many great games for it! Fun fact: Just like the GBA SP model that you like so much, the DSi has brighter screens aswell and it's a screen of much higher quality so the colors are alot more vibrant and DS games actually looks the best on the DSi out of all the DSs. Even better than on the 3DS and 3DS XL! And Metal Jesus, it always makes me smile to see Mega Man X4 on the TV in your opening every time. One of my favorite games of all time, it's awesome that you picked that one out of all the games you could've picked! Anyway, love your show and I can't wait for Part 2! //Senkai
Have either of you gotten any Japanese games for the DS? I got Xenosaga I & II coming through the mail (hopefully soon) which looks great. I also got Blood of Bahamut, which REALLY shows the power of the DS's 3D capabilities. I showed that one to a few friends and they couldn't believe that it was a DS game.
Contact, LEGO Battles, Bionicle Heroes, Aliens Infestation, Ghost Trick: Phanton Detective, Etrian Odyssey, Shin Megami Tensei: Stranger Journey, Disgea DS, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Contra 4, and the Bleach/Naruto games are all great DS gems
A big problem for the DS lite, and DS phat that the hinges got weak. Not sure about the DSi though. I'm happy the 3DS seems to have strong hinges, and I just use my GBA sp for anything from the past that isn't DS.
kitramsey5150 My credit will never go to "shit". Who uses loans to by games? Also I'm way past the point of using credit cards. That's something kids do to help build some credit. If you're over 25 and still using a credit card, you've made some bad life choices. Now saying that, I'd totally buy all the games she wanted within my budget, which at the time is substantial. She still wifey material.
kitramsey5150 Everyone has a hobby. It's even proven people with hobbies are usually more composed and live longer lives. Seeing how she has a life outside of collecting, I don't think she's even close to being a "problem" hobbiest. I've seen grown men take off their shirts, paint themselves, put on wigs and stand in a parking lot drinking beer and screaming until they passed out because of a football game. Now that too me is much worse than a polite, well spoken women collecting video games as a hobby. I've never thought of game collecting to be a "gender specific" hobby, if anything women should excel at doing it since they are naturally better negotiators and problem solvers than men are which is handy when yardsaleing or at flea markets. As far as that last comment, son let me tell you, coming from someone who owns his own business, has an amazing kid that just turned 4 a couple weeks ago and still has a great relationship with my ex, his mom, that "make me a sandwich" attitude will get you nowhere. My parents have been together for 30 years, best couple I've ever seen and if my dad now or ever before had walked into the house and told my mother to "shut up and make me a sandwich", she would have hit him in the head with a frying pan and left his ass. If you want a "make me a sandwich" girl, if you can even find one, then that's your decision, but I promise you any relationship like that isn't love and is honestly the biggest waste of a life I can think of.
kitramsey5150 I'm not saying a woman can do anything a man can better, I'm just saying it's perfectly fine for women to collect games, or anything else for that matter. I know situations are different from person to person, but I've seen the strength of women through my mother. Without her, my family would have been a mess. She's the glue that held and still holds everything together. The strength and mental fortitude of my mother is sometimes awe inspiring. Physically I'm stronger than her, mentally, my mother is a literal super hero compared to myself. This is all kinda pointless because the video game collecting is just a perk for her, I just said she was wifey material because she has a great attitude and personality on top of sharing a hobby of mine. Now I'm a veteran, played sports my whole school life and work out at least 3 times a week, so she'd have to go to the gym with me. Beauty is beauty and she is very pretty, we just got to work on getting her healthy and I'd clinch the perfect 10. Already got the plan my man, just need that DM lol. Don't take RUclips comments so seriously, sure I'd put a ring on it in a heart beat, I'm 30 years old and can pretty much tell you from the first 30 seconds of seeing someone and hearing them, if they'd be wifey, so just take this for what it was man. Just me giving a random compliment to someone that'll never read it lol.
Just found your channel. Love it, and gotta say that the sole fact that you mentioned that you guys were drinking a home brewed black ipa sugarcoated it for me ^^ craftbeer+gaming!!
way too many rpgs and turn based games, two of my least favorite genres, the latter in particular i have absolutely no interest in, didnt like it from the early final fantasy and pokemon games and still dont to this day, i find the whole turn base genre to be incredibly tedious.
omg, i was thinking; wow shes very attractive, but it probably stops there... but shes a gamer? AND a homebrewer? all grain too, shiet son. MJR, you need to grab that up.
The DS is one of my favourite systems ever. Children of Mana was great, Mario Hoops. Also, Battles of Prince of Persia was one of the strangest entries in the PoP series, and quite decent.
The launch DS was really stupid, they had better screens as the GBA SP+. It had an actual backlit screen yet they used the front lit screen from the original GBA SP instead...then upgraded the screens in the DS Lite, that's just stupid.
Yo MJR - I just wanted to say, you've recently inspired me to get a 3ds. Got a great deal on the black with gold details Zelda version on eaby. have to say i absolutely Love it! you might find this interesting, but i made the decision because you recently picked up a virtual boy as well and said how much you liked it for what it was. I LOVE the virtual boy- and that's how i knew i could trust your judgement with the 3ds. My first few games are Steel Diver, Paper Mario, And Star Fox 3D- which are all KILLER ( I know you like steel diver- very cool game, esp for a launch title). Couldn't be more happy with my new system. Thanks for doing what you do Metal Jesus, keep it up always.
thank you so much for introducing me to dragon quest rocket slime! i never heard of the game since it wasn't released in europe and i haven't seen it in any other nds recommended lists, but now that i got it for myself i'm having so much fun playing! great videos, keep on creating and stay awesome!
Rocket Slime is great. I mentioned it on your FB channel. I picked it up relatively recently from GameStop for like 5 dollars. I cant imagine it being that expensive elsewhere.
Great video, when did Devil Survivor take place in a High School setting? 5 of the dozen or so of playable characters are highschooler but that's about it, aside from the Persona games, most Atlus games don't take place in that kind of setting, I'm still glad it was included in the list mind you, same with Hotel Dusk, amazing adventure title, love the style and the story.
Thank you MJR! I, a ds game collector, have been waiting for you to do a Ds hidden gems video and it was great. Can't wait for parts two and three. The Ds is such a good system that this should have ten parts instead of three.
i dont know if its a "hidden gem" but SNK vs Capcom Card Fighters was/is amazing. it has so much high quality art and portraits of snk and capcom characters plus a lot of backstory and trivia on the cards.its a joy to look at(i bought a ds just to play it)
Great timing with the this video matey - just got myself a DS back and looking for some game recommendations.. Nanostray 1 and 2 are superb shooters but as you said they're as hard as balls... lol
Tales Of Innocnce is to me,one of the best DS games ever made. Sadly,it was never officially released in the USA,but there IS an English patch for the game. You obviously need either: An R4 ds Cartridge (to allow download and play on an actual DS) OR An Emulator (to allow possible play on the computer) English Patch Download tinyurl.com/n5hkfz2 Simply drag the Tales Of Innocence game rom (found on most ds rom sites) onto the bat file that (LITERALLY) says drag Rom here to patch the game. {The Rom/Game MUST be Japanese/original version of the game for the Patch file to work}
I'm deducting points for not mentioning Devil Survivor's great story even once or mentioning 999 although I suspect that that game's popularity is rising anyways
I haven't watched the other two parts of this yet, but there are two more videos for DS hidden gems...999 might be in one of them, but again, haven't watched 'em yet so I don't know for sure, that game is definitely one I'm looking for though as I've heard lots of good things about it, and Spike Chunsoft is definitely a company I like the games of (*especially* Danganronpa).
My favorite Nintendo DS games are: Aliens Infestation, Ultimate Mortal Kombat, Battles of Prince of Persia, Tetris DS, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Animal Crossing: Wild World, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, Wall-E, Drawn to Life, Ghostbusters: The Video Game, Tom Clancy series, Moon, GoldenEye: Rogue Agent, Contact, Chrono Trigger, Scribblenauts.

Agreed. I can't stand these obnoxious youtubers. Metal Jesus has quality content and seems like a geniunely good person.
There is a significant lack of yelling in his videos, which is nice as a headphone user (too cheap for PC speakers).

JRPGs! I used to not like playing on handhelds but I had to adapt. I noticed in recent years the amount of quality portable JRPGs has been on the rise. Continues on with the 3DS and I also need to get my hands on Vita. I'm actaully playing the 3DS version of Devil Survivor right now.
Turn Based Rpgs, the genre that mostly disapeared from consoles found a new home in the DS, and Turn Based Strategy.
Mine would be RPGs. Chrono Trigger is my favourite. Also Pokemon, Radiant Historia, Final Fantasies...
RPG's. The GB/Gba/DS seemed to rock for rpgs ^_^.

Layton's Apprentice Did you know the director behind that game created a spiritual successor called Chase: Cold case investigations?
Yes I did! It came out just this month actually. The main protagonist looks just like Kyle Hyde. It's a shame it's only available on eShop, though.

I love how spunky Kinsey is. She's always so happy and cute to watch.
Finally some recognition for Rocket Slime! Loved that game.
//Senkai
2019 and I'm here seen this amazing video
Have either of you gotten any Japanese games for the DS? I got Xenosaga I & II coming through the mail (hopefully soon) which looks great.
I also got Blood of Bahamut, which REALLY shows the power of the DS's 3D capabilities. I showed that one to a few friends and they couldn't believe that it was a DS game.
Man, you have so many good videos... :D
Contact, LEGO Battles, Bionicle Heroes, Aliens Infestation, Ghost Trick: Phanton Detective, Etrian Odyssey, Shin Megami Tensei: Stranger Journey, Disgea DS, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Contra 4, and the Bleach/Naruto games are all great DS gems
Hotel Dusk is so good. Couldn't stop playing when i bought it
you should import the squel from europe
Chris Marsh Yeah, i heard it is as good as the first one
A big problem for the DS lite, and DS phat that the hinges got weak. Not sure about the DSi though. I'm happy the 3DS seems to have strong hinges, and I just use my GBA sp for anything from the past that isn't DS.
Kinsey is so wifey material
kitramsey5150 My credit will never go to "shit".
Golden sun for the Ds has beautiful graphics for the time
Hotel Dusk is hidden? well, not in europe, it has a tv commercial indeed.
Sorry for my english, i'm spanish.
Kinsey is super hot!
Are you blind?
+Globez123 She really is. I'm crushing on her :D
+Alex McCrea right.... these boys don't get out much
+2k0wen most of them are like metal Jesus about 40 yrs old playin video games in the basement
+Alex McCrea if you don't like video game why watch this video????
way too many rpgs and turn based games, two of my least favorite genres, the latter in particular i have absolutely no interest in, didnt like it from the early final fantasy and pokemon games and still dont to this day, i find the whole turn base genre to be incredibly tedious.
Dude kinda' looks like an overweight Weird Al.
Ben Tarr oh thats why he looks so goddamn familiar..
4 years later and..... LMAO
I love retro game challenge and appreciate any list that speaks fondly of it.
kinsey is awesome!
Dragon Ball Z Attack Of The Saiyans is awesome RPG on the Ds and I’d say a must have for DBZ fans
Ah yeah, My boy SMT Devil Survivor getting some well deserved praise.
omg, i was thinking; wow shes very attractive, but it probably stops there...
but shes a gamer? AND a homebrewer? all grain too, shiet son.
MJR, you need to grab that up.
samljer You talk about women like they're prizes to be won...
The DS is one of my favourite systems ever. Children of Mana was great, Mario Hoops. Also, Battles of Prince of Persia was one of the strangest entries in the PoP series, and quite decent.
Make sure to include Radiant Historia and 9 hours 9 persons 9 doors in the next one, they have really great stories.
I thought Tiny Tim passed away years ago?
+paincalledliving hahahahaha! Fuck yeah dude! You are seriously funny.
:(
I still have my phat DS (and still use it). Still works fine since launch.
Kinsey has great taste in games.
HOTEL DUSK!!!! One of my favorite games! You must check out the sequel, Last Window (that was only released in Europe and Japan).
Last Window was even better! Both great games!
getting your butt kicked in video games is very fresh in 2014, LOL!
Keep rockin' man, great videos as always, greetings from Croatia!
Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime is some good stuff! Very fun game!
Hotel Dusk is totally one of my complete favorites on the DS. A bit cryptic at parts but I LOVE the style and dialaouge.
Honestly, this girl's taste in video games is off charts, played them all
The DS was great
Some of the best RPGs are on that system.

thank you so much for introducing me to dragon quest rocket slime! i never heard of the game since it wasn't released in europe and i haven't seen it in any other nds recommended lists, but now that i got it for myself i'm having so much fun playing!
great videos, keep on creating and stay awesome!
Rocket Slime is great. I mentioned it on your FB channel. I picked it up relatively recently from GameStop for like 5 dollars. I cant imagine it being that expensive elsewhere.
The fat ds may be chonk but mine is sturdy...ds lites break all the time
Are any of these really hidden gems? They are good but all pretty prominent. at least they were in the game shop I worked uin.
She's cute !!! The first shooter game you two previewed looked fun . Going to search for it definitely !
I love the ds and I love your interview s I got my new ds you inspire me to f
2 of my fav ds games are custom robo arena & ultimate mortal kombat ds
Same I want a new Custom Robo game and a medabots game sadly the medabots games are only released In japan
@@GamerBoy870 #Medabots
Hotel Dusk... Failed to mention the "Ah ha: Take on me" resemblance in the animated moving art. Heh.
And here we are im back again, after get bored with switch and 3ds
Great video, when did Devil Survivor take place in a High School setting? 5 of the dozen or so of playable characters are highschooler but that's about it, aside from the Persona games, most Atlus games don't take place in that kind of setting, I'm still glad it was included in the list mind you, same with Hotel Dusk, amazing adventure title, love the style and the story.
Thank you MJR! I, a ds game collector, have been waiting for you to do a Ds hidden gems video and it was great. Can't wait for parts two and three.
The Ds is such a good system that this should have ten parts instead of three.
i dont know if its a "hidden gem" but SNK vs Capcom Card Fighters was/is amazing.
it has so much high quality art and portraits of snk and capcom characters plus a lot of backstory and trivia on the cards.its a joy to look at(i bought a ds just to play it)
Awesome list so far :) Old video I know but just getting back into playing one of my favorite systems
Avalon Code,Black Sigil,Time Hollow,Trace Memory, so many good games on DS
Great timing with the this video matey - just got myself a DS back and looking for some game recommendations.. Nanostray 1 and 2 are superb shooters but as you said they're as hard as balls... lol
Tales Of Innocnce is to me,one of the best DS games ever made.
Sadly,it was never officially released in the USA,but there IS an English patch for the game.
You obviously need either:
An R4 ds Cartridge (to allow download and play on an actual DS)
OR
An Emulator (to allow possible play on the computer)
English Patch Download
tinyurl.com/n5hkfz2
Simply drag the Tales Of Innocence game rom (found on most ds rom sites) onto the bat file that (LITERALLY) says drag Rom here to patch the game.
{The Rom/Game MUST be Japanese/original version of the game for the Patch file to work}
I'm deducting points for not mentioning Devil Survivor's great story even once or mentioning 999 although I suspect that that game's popularity is rising anyways
I got Nanostray for 2 bucks after all these years. Lol
