    • @LM.312
      @LM.312 11 месяцев назад +11

      Respectfully, she doesn’t “get a pass” because she didn’t ask for that pass to begin with…She’s Filipina so why can’t y’all just accept that and let her represent who she actually is rather than try and claim her? I’m sorry but sometimes Hispanic people try to claim Filipinos like we want to be you and it’s honestly very weird.
      Also, for anyone who is interested: The Philippines was conquered centuries ago. There’s this misconception that Filipinos and Spaniards are “basically the same” when that’s such a misguided idea set in a lack of understanding. And sadly, a lot of Filipinos are also guilty of fueling this narrative that they are “basically Hispanic,” while dismissing other aspects of their culture under the rug while highlighting the Spanish influence. This is bad because it contributes to the erasing of what was once our culture, in its entirety, rather than just cherry picked bits.
      One misconception I notice is that we carry Spanish last names simply because we carry Spanish blood. In reality, we have Spanish last names because the Spaniards forcefully assigned them to us, whether we had Spanish in our lineage or not. Don’t get me wrong, there are cultural influences for sure as well as the country converting to Catholicism, but there is also so much more regarding Filipino culture that has influence from other countries as well as their own.
      Also, it’s important to mention the toxic beauty standards Filipinos have set for themselves. Newsflash, a lot of Filipinos don’t even look “Spanish,” they look Filipino! None of my relatives really look Spanish, a few could pass as Hispanic but most of them are undoubtedly Filipino/Southeast Asian in looks. But unfortunately there is a lot of self hate in the Philippines which contributes to the idea that they need to act as though they are “basically Hispanic.” In Filipino media you will see it- they fill their media with the most white passing or Hispanic passing Filipinos they can hire. If you are mixed with white or Hispanic, they will likely hire you to “represent” Filipinos. It’s an unfair representation set in toxic beauty standards, which contributes to the world believing that “all Filipinos simply look Hispanic” when in reality Filipinos are an extremely mixed race with different “looks.”
      The Philippine culture is too diverse and influenced, the topic is very nuanced in ways that even it’s own people don’t always want to talk about, which is why I wanted to bring this up.

      Actually the Philippines was a colony of Spain for over 300 years and was part of the Galleon trade with Mexico that went from Manila to Acapulco and back. Spanish was spoken and taught in schools up until the US colonized the country in 1898, after which we were made to use English. The Filipino language itself still has a lot of borrowed Spanish words but is based on one of 172 languages and dialects that we have (even the Filipino greeting of Kamusta is taken from Como estas). We even have Chavacano, which is our own Spanish-based Creole language spoken in the province of Zamboanga.

But now everyone is sensitive we have to have this race complaining that race complaining saying someone is taking a role from another race like I don't understand is my movie shouldn't I be the one to pick who I think is good enough regarding their race as far they look a bit similar to the part and with a little makeup on they can look like the character and also can act the part very well even if they are of different race . Some people may look the part but can't act as good as the one who doesn't so you are telling the writer or producer to go into the world and start checking everyone from that race till they see someone who can act. People keep forgetting not everyone can do a good job when it comes to acting . This race thing is getting ridiculous and ruining movies and shows . This is why we don't have good movies anymore how sad, And also didn't Vanessa acted the part long time ago nobody complain about her acting but now they know she isn't the race they thought she was and now they are here complaining like their lives depends on it .

The problem starts when a small group of select Americans decides that they’re going to use historical events from hundreds of years ago to justify their bad behavior and life choices, and ultimately put the blame for their failure onto another group of people who had nothing to do with said history. Filipinos can be considered as Hispanics. You don’t have to speak or know Spanish in order to be Hispanic. Hispanic really just means that you come from a country that has significant historical and cultural ties to Spain. Although the Philippines is obviously in Asia, many aspects of their culture has been immensely influenced by Spain. Of course, the Philippines does retain a vast amount of their own unique Southeast Asian/Austronesian culture. But this in no way diminishes the impact that Spain had on the Philippines, or on other countries that it colonized, which many retain aspects from the cultures that inhabited its region before the arrival of the Spanish.
    So if you’re Filipino, I would see no error if you were to identify as being Hispanic. Hispanicity is not dependent on race. There are many people of African, Asian, and other ancestries that identify with Hispanic culture, because their country of origin was influenced and colonized by Spain.
    This also of course doesn’t take away from Filipinos being Asian. They are 100% Asian. But again if they choose too they can choose to identify as Hispanic. Just not Latino. Latino means from Latinamerica, and obviously the Philippines is in Asia.

      When the Phillipines and the Viceroyalty of New Spain (Mexico today) were Spanish territories, there was an annual trade route that went from Manila to Acapulco and back. It was referred to as the route of the Manila Galleons. That annual trade route lasted for more than 250 years.. It was the first Trans Pacific trade route.
