There is nobody like him, and to my knowledge, there never has been. Kenneth Pattengale of the Milk Carton Kids is worth a listen too, and Andrew Marlin of Mandolin Orange is the nearest thing to a mandolin playing Rawlings
Great musicians, brilliant performance. Listening to this in November 2020 I really wish I had an airplane. Today this gathering around one mic would be considered a potential super-spreader event. Hope we can get back to live music one day.
Love the song, love the guitar. Thank you for this music David, and Gillian. I’m rehabbing from a torn quadriceps tendon surgery, and this is like meditation
I heard the Song (Internet-Radio). This live performance is beautiful.... very cool combination of instruments! they play live... respect! greets from austria (europe)
Such a wonderful song. “I’d go flyin’ o’er every sorrowful thing” It’s a very poetic and beautiful notion summed up in just the right key with the perfect words. It made me think of a couple random events and people of the past 10-15 years... The first one being, Colton Harris Moore, the “Barefoot Bandit”, who was a semi-sensation of a young and bold outlaw in the modern era but, in truth he was a dynamic genius born into hard living with tough luck but, enough spirit and grit to take to the skies with the obvious thinking that he may never get to if not then and there despite it being a daring crime to steal airplanes. I still often think about that young man and, how inspiring his story was and is to those of us who dream of flight. The other instance was the more recent event of that sad young man who stole the airplane on the tarmac in Seattle and, took to the skies to say his goodbye to a world in which he lived and wanted to prove he had lived even though as it seems, he was determined to die. It was in his voice where you could hear him liberated from the sadness he must have been enduring. You hear him talk about the beauty of the things he was flying over and the majesty of the mountains that get to stand up there every single day and gaze all around. He also managed to pull off some wild maneuvers which again, I imagine sent a sensation of pure living through his veins. It is tragic that he would later crash and die. It is also worth noting that it could’ve hurt innocent lives too even if he was clearly stating his intention to avoid that at all costs. Good that he did avoid that but, he ought not have done the stunt and, I want to be clear that I feel this way and that his was not a thing of glory. It likely devastated those who loved him but, in my prayers for the ones who suffer with sorrowful things and, the beauty of this song, I will keep these young men in my thoughts and, the thoughts of peace I get when I dream of flight, the silence and the gliding pacific ease of flying over every sorrowful thing. I love art and often I prefer Americana. My goodness, these musicians and artists are such favorites of mine.
Dave projects such an ease and confidence, while playing so intricately, it's leadership energy. You'd think pulling off the virtuosity would be all he could focus on, but he makes it look second nature. You can tell it really encourages the band to get as much out of their instruments and harmonies as possible, especially Brittany who makes the fiddle emote that deep sense of yearning. Such a perfect adornment on top of the song. Meanwhile, the bass player is vibing out hard in the background the whole song 😆
these guys are the shit .the real thing Tom petty loved harmony and loved clarity in music melody as well .these guys got all of that and great character.
I guess all good bands do it but I love how the whole band pays attention to and plays off each other. Music as it should be. I don’t see egos at work here
Yeah, it's freaking me out. Can you tell what he's playing here? I've always wondered if he even HAS a backup when they're on tour. Or if he'd like, bought up a bunch of early 1930s Epiphone Olympics before his playing drove up their value.
Guessing on the headstock it's a D'Angelico, but not one that's currently in production. dangelicoguitars.com/guitars/excel-series/excel-exl-1a/#DAEEXL1ANACGT Edit: It's an original ('59) D'Angelico.
My first thought too. The fret board on that 12 is pretty nice - maybe custom . . ha probably a one-off made especially and only for him? Or maybe he just pulled it from a stone somewhere deep in a forest. I know I've never seen one.
Two fine instruments which they's playin' for us and they deserve them, although the artistry was just as good on that '36 Epiphone and Gillian's '56 J50 Gibson.
Подсел на музыку Дэвида , после фильма Джентельмены. Кто ещё из России тут? Got hooked on David's music after the movie Gentlemen. Who else from Russia is here?
don't know how they found each other, but the music world is the richer for it. either one could have ended up in a band that went nowhere. sometimes a pair beats a full house.
The two of them were nominated for best original song because they wrote it... So naturally they performed the song for which they were nominated. Wouldn't have made a ton of sense to have Willie do it.
Love this song and this video, though I admit I cringe every time I watch it. I'm just convinced that David is going to whack Willie across the head with his guitar. Too close! :)
This song is actually a masterpiece..
A hidden gem... im extremely happy to have stumbled upon this...
After a Josh Blue stand up comedy...
Me too brother! I woke up to the song at the end of the josh blue special and had to track it down
Same here.
Rawlings & Welch ...true treasures ❤️
And willie watson, to boot
DAvid Rawlings is a genious and one of the best folk guitarists ever!
David Rawlings is gods chosen guitar player.
I couldn't agree more
FOR REALS!
There is nobody like him, and to my knowledge, there never has been. Kenneth Pattengale of the Milk Carton Kids is worth a listen too, and Andrew Marlin of Mandolin Orange is the nearest thing to a mandolin playing Rawlings
He's the best folk guitarist ever!
And Brittany Haas on the fiddle? they are all so great...I love this one
I could hear this song every single day. God, it's beautiful.
Dave, Gillian, and Willie. What a trio!
Sorry but you can't forget Brittany and Paul!
Great musicians, brilliant performance. Listening to this in November 2020 I really wish I had an airplane. Today this gathering around one mic would be considered a potential super-spreader event. Hope we can get back to live music one day.
OMG. THEY ARE SO STELLAR! IF THE WORLD NEW TRUE TALENT THIS WOULD BE 100 MIL + VIEWS!
I don’t think they are capable of anything less than absolutely stellar.
I love how Dave pays respect to the violin solo by slightly turning around. Makes the violin lady smile.
Brittany Haas.
Great part! And I like how she kind of tries to "concentrate" again and then Rawlings makes the solo go further/higher and she follows him...
And yet there are folks who say that there hasn't been any good music since the sixties or seventies. There is always good music and great performers.
Agreed - You just have to be a "bit" lucky and KNOW where to LOOK !!!
I love singing harmonies with these masters 🥰
Love the song, love the guitar. Thank you for this music David, and Gillian. I’m rehabbing from a torn quadriceps tendon surgery, and this is like meditation
your soul and heart remember these songs even if you heard them for the first time
I heard the Song (Internet-Radio).

Thanks for a beatiful song. It grows and gets better and better every time I hear it.
Such a wonderful song.

Followed them for years and saw then in Perth Western Australia a year or so back! Killer to see, inspiring musicians!
I can watch this endlessly...

Love this band
David, I'm glad your guitar found you and it sounds awesome. I sure liked that old one though!
"oh the times they are a changin"
I guess all good bands do it but I love how the whole band pays attention to and plays off each other. Music as it should be. I don’t see egos at work here
I love this song!
Great song!!! Heard this at the end of Josh Blue "comedian " looked it up immediately and is now in my playlist!!
Fantastic Brittany.
True "country music" as I believe it should be.
Brilliant in every way .
Perfection!
the look on the rhythm guitarist's face while he's watching gill and dave do their thing just says 'best job ever'
That rhythm guitar player is Gillian Welch
Heather Higgins I meant the guy on the right.. hence ‘he’s’ 😏
Willie Watson
Dave still sounds like Dave, but man it's weird seeing a different guitar in his hands.
yeah. the 1935 Epiphone is such a vintage tone. you really cant beat it

I like it! Love his playing, not a fan of the Epiphone.
My first thought too. The fret board on that 12 is pretty nice - maybe custom . . ha probably a one-off made especially and only for him? Or maybe he just pulled it from a stone somewhere deep in a forest. I know I've never seen one.
Music ROYALTY !
Two fine instruments which they's playin' for us and they deserve them, although the artistry was just as good on that '36 Epiphone and Gillian's '56 J50 Gibson.
I really want her J50. Its a really lovely sounding guitar. And I love pre 60s Gibsons more than just about anything lol.
Great again, love the new guitar better sound, Thanks for sharing.
He probably can a cardboard box sound good but man i really dig that old Epiphone.

Went to music school together!
Absolutely perfect.
...watching Brittany glide that bow across those strings is just magic...
damn i love this
Love the Hat Gill!
(Bronco Sue?)
Hooters Gibson
Wow!
If you can keep a dry eye when that fiddle comes in you're a better man than me
That was great.
i find myself here alot...
Back here again
I can't find it anywhere but I remember them singing a song called "camptown man" anyone else recall this one?
You're probably thinking of "hard times" ruclips.net/video/k35haKwqY14/видео.html
Wickedness 💛💚❤️💯🔥
Willie Watson just doing his part on the side.
I would fly to Tennessee for the day if I had an airplane too
I heard "Airplane" on a Josh Blue video and had to find it.
If I could only fly........
What kind of hat is Gillian wearing? That’s cool
Cool hat for sure...a bit big on her, but none-the-less a great style lid.
thats Willie's hat lol
A list of the players, please...
Brittany Haas Paul Kowert I think
JB Robertson Willie Watson, formerly of Old Crow Medicine Show
Anyone else hear a young Mick Jagger in Davids single style in this one?
Dave can’t wrestle and dance that thing like he can his little Olympic…
I just love Willie Watson. I am very upset that Dave Rawlings and Gillian performed at the Grammys instead of Willie Watson who sang it in the movie.
The two of them were nominated for best original song because they wrote it... So naturally they performed the song for which they were nominated. Wouldn't have made a ton of sense to have Willie do it.
The song is great. But is it just me or the video and the sound are not synced in this video? There's a big lag when I watch it
Damn. That is a decent song. I approve. Lol
Is Gillian ok?
Hearing Dave not play his olympic sounds so strange.
To me he could play a shoe-string and it would still sound great.
What guitar is that, that David is playing?
Love this song and this video, though I admit I cringe every time I watch it. I'm just convinced that David is going to whack Willie across the head with his guitar. Too close! :)
Thanks for sharing that picture. Now I gotta cringe too. "Bam", "Whack", that´ll teach him, lol.
I know!!! :) @@elwray3506
охуительно
who is the fiddle player?
Ha. Never mind. Brittany Haas. Fantastic addition to this group.
She is the tip ot the iceberg among new fiddlers. Go do some surfing...
Seems like Dave's retired the Epiphone
milliewray what’s that he’s playing now?
He tours with both guitars
Nah, and Gill hasn't retired her J-50 either. I think the larger archtop might work better in a one-mic studio setting like WFUV's.
Here's the story on the guitar. www.fretboardjournal.com/features/excerpt-david-rawlings-unlikely-new-archtop/
Wonderful music, but why do they have to wear these stupid hats?
Hmm blue grass and maybe the hats aren't stupid
@@garybishop317 According to Gillian the music they play is country
I like the hats.
I'm getting one...👀👍😂
I also had an Texas/Tennesee "Cowboy" Hat! Greets from Austria (Europe)
