Can you use the electrical motor and the engine at the same time? Mythbusters put a turbocharger on a Honda Hybrid and it got better millage and power.
I have a 2022 Lexus ES300h. I just drove to Maryland from Buffalo NY and back and got 44.5 MPG mostly cruising between 70 - 80MPH. In hot weather I've gotten 50 MPG. Awesome vehicle - fully loaded - a 6 hour drive doesn't even fatigue this 70 yr old driver. Plenty of power on the highway to merge into traffic. Handles great, rides great, best stereo available in a car. Worth every penny.
That engine was better than the newer model Avalon, because the V6 has 10 gears. I owned one for seven months and then sold it. The gears kept getting hung up and thought the transmission was going blow.
I've got the same car. Runs and drives great! Only gripes for me are that the stereo is anemic, the speedometer is off by +3mph, and the button/light enclosure installed in the roof between the front driver and passenger seat is falling out about 1/4 inch.

I have a 2016 Avalon Hybrid with 176,000 miles. The ONLY issue I’ve ever had with it was a wheel bearing gone bad, which was an easy and relatively cheap fix. It’s never given me any major issues and has always been a reliable car with just basic maintenance. They’re great cars!
Have you changed the brakes yet? A friend of mine has an Avalon Hybrid with 150k miles and not replaced brakes yet. I have a 2018 Camry Hybrid hoping for the same.
a co-worker has a 2005 Avalon V6 with well over 300 thousand miles on it. It still runs like a top and gets 35 plus mpg. He does maintenance often and the only mechanical work has been brakes and struts. Its still a great car.
I’d love to know how he manages 35 MPG. I have 06 Avalon with 100k miles in perfect mechanical condition that gets about 28-30 mpg highway and 18-22 in the city
Not sure if this is ever given enough props. To the people who take their vehicles to Scotty so he can teach US .. I thank you. I am sure so many more THANK YOU. I was going to see if he wanted to check my truck as 2 mechanics so far are stumped. But he went north :( I would have to wait until Summer for him to come back down.
The 2nd generation of the Avalon was predicted to be Toyotas biggest mistake ever, not because there was anything wrong, but because there wasn’t. Most of the automotive press thought they were crazy for selling a top of the line Toyota that was far better than the more expensive ES models offered by Lexus.
I’m driving a 2016 hybrid Avalon. Love it. Luxurious, very quiet, great ride, decent handling, amazing factory sound system, and respectably fast. I like the look-front grill is modern looking but more understated. It was this or a Camry. Great mileage-tad under 40 mpg. Teslas and these hybrids in sport mode-very fast off the line. Bought used-great way to get into these cars. Highly rated for reliability. I absolutely love this car. Understated elegance
I now avoid bigger wheels/low-profile tires like the plague. Setting aside the punctures and curb rash issues, I noticed lower-trim versions of cars consistently had better ride quality. Eventually confirmed my suspicion that it was the wheels/tires, after trying same-trim with different wheels.
I love my 2019 Avalon Hybrid XSE. Ive recouped the 1200 dollar hybrid upgrade two years ago with MPG in the mid to high 40s.Also the XSE in not the top hybrid trim level. That distinction goes to the hybrid limited.
Quick question-are you still on the original hybrid battery or no? Either ways these cars pencil well-hybrids are so much cheaper to maintain compared to a gas only car even WITH replacing the hybrid battery along the way.
In June 2020, no one was buying cars, so I went online and asked for best price on a Avalon hybrid XLE. Had an offer on one with moon roof and 14-speaker JBL sound system. It was $6500 under MSRP. Best car I ever owned. Have got 53 mpg on short trips. Could have sold it for a profit in 2021.
Scotty, you da man! I have a 2020 limited hybrid, after 50k miles on crappy California Roads.. I traded in the rim's for 17" wheels. Best thing I ever did, feels like a different car Thanks again!
My friend sold his 2015 ford fusion titanium, which was a very nice car, and upgraded to a 2021 avalon limited hybrid. Such a nice car, and as Scotty says, it is like a Lexus with Toyota branding on it. I’ve driven it a few times and it’s such a fast and smooth ride. It’s a shame to see it be discontinued but at least they went out on a high note.
I have a 2017 Hybrid Camry that is the best car I have ever owned, my parents liked it so much my dad bought the Avalon Hybrid and my mom got the Venza. They average over 50 mpg to work and my 2017 get like 44mpg. Toyota is definitely king of the Hybrids
I bought a used 2005 avalon in 2013 with 85k miles. Now it has 150k miles and still runs like new. No major repairs! Replaced battery, tires and brakes, plus regular oil changes. That's it. And comfy as he'll! Also, 30mpg on the highway!
Very pleased with my Yaris Hybrid, UK £18k this year , I get between 60 to 72 mpg, where the gallon is 4.55 litres( tank to tank,) . I have the highest profile tyres I could get, so far no damage.
I have been driving my first hybrid the past two months; a company car (BMW X3 xDrive 30e M Sport/ PHEV). Combined HP is just under 300HP. Most of the mileage is from the work commute, on roads with speeds between 30mph and 45mph, max. Range on electric is around 27 miles...but I live in a mountainous place with the office in the city (Lausanne, Switzerland), so plenty of opportunity to benefit from the kinetic recharge. I also recharge the battery to its full capacity every night. The commute is almost entirely done on the battery (to/from). The gas over here is pretty damn expensive...ranging from $8.30/gallon down to $7.30/gallon these past two months. I have topped off the gas tank every week and a half...spending around $15 to bring it back to full. Considering both weekend driving (some highway mileage) and the daily commute, I have saved around 85% in gas expenses these past two months. Considering electricity expenses, net savings is around 70% or about $350 per month in total. Would I own this as a personal vehicle...no. It's a BMW! Perfect company car, with its 4 year lease and full maintenance plan. However, if I were to take a mid-sized SUV as a personal vehicle, it would be the Toyota RAV4 PHEV. Similar size and better range. Cannot beat Toyota for reliability. I cannot imagine what the maintenance costs would be with the BMW in 5 to 6 years, but I assume it would be eye watering.
Avalon’s in general are the best kept secret in the car industry. They’re as big and comfy as a Buick with the reliability of a Toyota. Usually have the JBL sound system in em too, really great cars and often about the same price a a similar used Camry.
I went to order a RAV 4, none available but there was a Venza that just came in. I bought it. After 3 months of ownership I really like it. Typical milage is 42MPG. Going up through the mountains in WV it gets 36 MPG at 74 MPH. I didnt plan on buying a Hybrid but really like it.
So true on the tires. First year I got 3 flats and I had insurance, Toyota replaced them all. That's like 1300 bucks right there. I popped a couple more times...but I've learned to avoid pot holes, etc. and this is on the Camry (newer 2018 low profile Hankooks). Handles great though!
I have a 2011 Avalon with 123K miles. It looks, runs, and drives likes its new. In some ways it has that feeling like a heavy German car that is planted to the road and sails down the highway. But when you need it to it makes quick turns and emergency maneuvers without losing composure. And it’s quiet inside and the backseat legroom is enormous, like a town car. I get 22-24 city and 30+ highway. For the new model the XLE is the model to get or swap out the low pro tires/wheels. I test drove a XLE and fell in love. I’ll probably get one. The Hybrid MPG is real and amazing. Guys I know get 50+ in Hybrid Camry’s.
With gas approaching $7 in San Diego, I’m glad I got a Camry hybrid two years ago. Gets me 48 mpg in the real world and 52 if I drive like a grandma. I can only get 52 when there’s almost no cars on the road though because people around me regularly drive a good amount over the speed limit at all times.
I owned a 2015 Avalon Limited hybrid. Put 130,000 miles on it. It was the best car I've ever owned. Got 38mpg all around. When I heard this was the last year Toyota was going to make this vehicle, I bought a 2022 in January. Now, this is the best car I've ever had. My experience has been around 44 mpg, all around, and I don't drive like my grandmother. I will drive this into the ground, or until I can get an SUV that gets 40+ mpg with all wheel drive here in MN.
I have a 2008 Acura RL-SHAWD....that I wouldn't trade for money or chalk. I'm 70 now, I hope it's my last car purchase. It's cat quick, all wheel drive, comfortable as hell, and you don't SEE one at every light. Old man heaven. 😎
@@kannermw Agreed. Nothing lasts forever, including old men... 108,000 miles; I shop online; drive about 75-120 miles per week, hitting car shows and such, driving range, a par 3 golf course nearby....it's ALL GOOD. 😎
I have a 2021 Avalon XLE Hybrid. I have 20,000 miles on it. Nice comfortable riding car that gets 45 mpg in town. Glad I bought it. Doesn’t have low profile tires.
The question you should ask is do you want to spend the extra $14,000 now or over the next 10-15 years in the extra gas from the lower gas mileage. I doubt the hybrid would even save you $14k in gas over 10-15 years.
good point. no savings on anything. will end up paying a whole lot more in maintenance n repair costs on that "jet engine" hybrid, which will be a small fortune ($$), as it has to go to the dealer for everything.
CR: today's average hybrid costs about $1700 more -two exceptions:Ford Maverick and Lexus NX SUV. In 2015 CR calculated most hybrids took 8 years to pay for themselves through fuel savings. Today, improved tech and higher gas prices mean the average payback is 4 years with $4 a gallon gas and 12,000 miles driven a year. At $3 a gallon payback period increases to 5 years. Consumer Reports November 2022 Thanks Scotty-love your channel!

I have a 2020 trd. 305 hp. Gets better mileage than the 2015 camry I traded in for it. Consistently 31mpg hwy. The engineering / efficiency on these cars are mind boggling.
Gotta love toyota hybrids. Friend of mine has a 2012 Prius C (might be a 2011)with 190k, she still daily's it with no issues. I do have to say it was extremely slow when I drove it lol.
the prius C lacks soundproofing imo, they are fun and nimble, the regular prius is a happy medium, the camry hybrid is just too massive but great for cruising long distances
@@extremedrivr it depends what your needs are, not everyone wants good looks as their first criteria especially after a certain age. Prius are pretty good for camping and off-roading. I can't think of a similar sized hatch
My 2015 Toy Corolla S, with 30k miles, new oil every 2k, just changed CVT Trans-Oil, use Seafoam on a regular basis in both the gas and oil, run 93-octane all the time. Milage on a regular basis running mostly in Sport mode in town and regular mode when over 50 mile per hour and my milage is average 38~42 always. The low milage is 32 and running hard at 65 to 85 mph gets 53 mpg (no stop and start). Moral of my story: change your fluids and keep your engine clean in and out. Done. Bravo Toyota for the very popular 2015 model, what a car! Oh, I forgot, it says "S" on its backside, however that only gives you leather-wrapped steering wheel, sport bucket seats with leather and contrast stitching, everything else you'll have to do yourself, i.e., exhaust, ram air intakes, coil overs, etc. And you won't regret it. Tuning this car pulls it up to a whole new level.
Another great video Scotty. A lot of people think low aspect tires handle better but it's really just the opposite. The wider the sidewall the better the handling. Those eggcrate front grills might look neat but are impossible to clean. A simple horizontal or vertical slot design is a lot easier to maintain.
2020 Camry Se 4 cyl, I have the slim tires. I live in PA which is notorious for bad road as well! But I have had 0 issues and have traveled from PA-SC multiple times. Maybe just lucky 🍀 but so far so good and great handling too! Really surprises me he pooped two tires in just 2 months!
Avalons are so nice - the only thing I don't like is that MASSIVE grill they started putting on them. Takes an otherwise gorgeous car and gives a face not even a mother could love!
@@icosthop9998 is it 4x4? I also have 4cyl 4x4 Tacoma, ~22-23 mpg. Much more wind resistance and less acceleration but great little hard working trucks. Even if they have to slow down for biggest jobs, 12 gears gets it done :-)
I have an 02 RX300 with 298k miles and climbing, original drive train. My family has always been GM and Ford folks however a number of years ago, my brother, being the rebel he is....came home in a 2001 4runner. He still has it and now has 350k. That began the shift. We now have 4 Toyota/Lexus products in the family and that number is only going to grow.
My 2014 Toyota Avalon is the best car I’ve ever owned. Zero issues Toyota dealers have been trying to get me to trade it in. I would never trade it in. It’s the most reliable car I’ve ever driven.
I bought the 2019 Avalon Hybrid, the one thing I didn’t like was road noise from tires, , I bought a new set , much better. I wich I would have bought Michelin with the foam liner, but the only set Costco had was over a year old . My rims are the middle offered 18” . I’ve always been concerned about the shutoff. I never heard about tire blowouts ? Until now.? I paid $39,000 and now with gas in 2024 in Southern Utah is back to $4 a gallon I’m saving a lot of money. The car still looks brand new and worth $35,000
I have three Avalons, a 2021 XLE, a 2022 Limited, and a 2008 Limited. The Avalon was one of Toyota's best cars. Of all of them, the 2008 is the most comfortable to drive, and has a build quality that's hard to beat...
@@Nestle245I will clarify... My husband drives the 2021 XLE which was my car initially. I bought the 2022 Limited a few months later for myself. The 2008 Limited is my daily driver.
I owned a 1961 Austin Mini. The engine was modified with dual carbs, headers, ported and relieved cylinder head with a 4 speed trans. I was able to get 52 mpg. Don't talk to me about good fuel mileage.
I had a 2014 avalon hybrid for a cpl years . I averaged about 41-44mpg. I have a fairly light foot. I could get from LA to Vegas and back on a tank. Didnt really seem any better in town city driving. I think it was better on road trips. Was a fun car to drive. Lots of power. Quiet. Smooth at high speeds. EV mode quits about 13mph And engine kicks onz Stereo system kind of sucked. Blue tooth never worked right. Heads up a replacement windshield is like $1000. Also scrape the bumper constantly. Waaay more comfortable than a Prius. Smoother and quieter. I'm a big dude. Prius is tight fit. Was a fun car. Sport mode the steering tightens.
I love the Avalon. I talked my best friend into buying a used one from the Toyota Dealership back in 2016. It is a 2014 Avalon Hybrid which is still going strong. Such a nice smooth ride. I always thought I would purchase one someday but we went with a 2022 RAV4 Hybrid instead. I do remember the first TV commercials for the Avalon back in 89-90. I liked them back then too.
The only reason hybrid cars give better mileage in the city than on the highways is because of speed. The average speed in the city is much lower than the average speed on the highway. Also, air resistance is not linear, it goes significantly up with speed. Regenerative breaking recovers some of the energy from stop and drive in the city and that only leads to the better mileage. However, if you drive your hybrid or any car at a significant lower speed on the highways, you can always get better mileage than any city driving.
I have a RX 450 and bought the wife the new UX both are hybrid. Apart from being excellent cars the customer service is the best i’ve experienced in 40yrs driving .
Great shows Scotty, really enjoy your productions. FYI the 2022 Avalon 3.5L is 6 sec quarter mile. The 2022 Avalon Hybrid is 6.5 to 7+ seconds. I have a 2020 Avalon Touring 3.5L, get about 30sih mpg when my foot is tame. Had a 17 Camry Hybrid, which seemed to keep out accellerate many cars with the CVT. Good car but went back to convential engines for fear of failing technology. Love my Avalon Touring though. Sizable but fun care to drive. Wont touch anything but Toyota, but I service my cars myself. Developed trust issues wth dealer service.... Take care! MP
You don't have to worry about transmission failing on an eCVT because it doesn't really have one. The engine will have much less hours and heat on it as well. Not sure what's to fear.
@@thedopplereffect00Never cited the CVT as a concern specifically, more on the entire hybrid system and controls. That said, CVTs are different, but have their own complexities starting with the belt. It was still a good car in 19 when I traded it in. Actually relly liked it but love the Avalon Touring.
@@michaelp.4831 There is no belt in an eCVT. It's a motor generator with a planetary gear system. Look up some demos on RUclips of how they work, it's quite fascinating how simple they really are.
BTW, I love the fact that there was not accessory drive belt as everthing was electric. I suspect the decent horse power it had was due in part to no accessory drive loads. Seems to me that if manufacture went electronic on the PS pump, AC and so on, this could result in better echonomy. As it is with my 3.5L Avalon, I am back to a serp belt loading the engine so some degree. Still get about 30+ which is pretty close to my old 2006 2.5L Honda Accord which topped out at 32MPG.
I have a 2014 Toyota avalon hybrid with 120K miles. ZERO problems. 39 mpg original brakes. Most reliable car I have ever owned. Only issue I have is the touch screen is not readable in daylight because of glare. I hate capacitive touch buttons. barely touch them and it engages them. Seats are not comfortable for taller people. But the trunk is huge. It has over 500 miles range. I would recommend the toyota avalon to anyone. I will keep it for the next 10 years at least. Recently bought a Tesla Model Y Performance. Best car I have ever owned. I absolutely love that car. Seats are comfortable. Touch screen is huge and quite visible in sunlight. Full Self Driving is getting Crazy good. The smart phone app is great and charging in my garage is so much cheaper per mile than Gasoline that I am never going back to gasoline in future car choices.
I think you are right as Toyota is going to try and gouge consumers with Lexus like pricing and wonder why no one buys them. They intentionally NEVER marketed thr current gen Avalon for fear they would cannibalize too many Lexus ES350 sales that command a 20% price premium for nearest equipped equivalent.
The Lexus ES is basically the same car as the Toyota Avalon. I'd stick with the gas-only version, opposed to the hybrid. Hybrids are more expensive to maintain, and when the batteries go out they're VERY expensive to replace.
Toyota hybrids strike a nearly perfect balance between gasoline power and electric which yields excellent economical efficiency. All electrics are too expensive, so overall it is not as efficient in total cost as a Toyota Prius hybrid.
Hey Scotty, love your channel. I'm from Niagara Falls originally. Anyway, the Avalon with the V6 does 0-60 in approximately 6 seconds. This hybrid can't come close. Just an FYI brother
The Avalon is an excellent car. I used to have one, a hybrid. It's also reasonably well priced (entry model) but Limited trim gets pricey. This car is NOT better than a Lexus, sorry Scottie. Maybe comparatively to the money, but not in absolute terms. I testdrove these cars and two things immediately come to mind. 1) The Lexus ES is quieter inside. Not that the Avalon is noisy, but I noticed the difference. 2) The ES is more compliant on uneven road surfaces. Again, the Avalon is not uncomfortable BUT the ES suspension is tuned differently, and those two reasons alone are worth considering the ES. Moreover, the building philosophy of a Lexus is different. You may not notice that the first 100K miles, but over time, you can tell. Welding is different, sheet metal is different, quality leather in the ES is better, stitching is different. Rivets are different. Details, details. A Lexus is NOT a luxury Toyota with a different logo.
We have an older Avalon, 2009, still going strong. My 21 year old son drives it. He loves the luxury - leather seats, sunroof, heated seats with memory, JBL stereo, reclining back seats and limo like legroom. Avalons are good cars. I’d go for the hybrid just because Toyota hybrid systems are bulletproof, we had a Prius, and we have a RAV hybrid. I agree with Scotty, skip the sportier model / the lower profile tires.
I’m thinking of picking up a touring or a trd Avalon tomorrow! High hopes cause I’m dying to get the touring… haven’t test drove yet but I already know I’m going to love it
Just bought the 2020 Avalon Pearl white with the glitter paint in it xse! Love it got it for 28,000 with 18,000 miles damn near brand new! Favorite car I’ve owned 301 hp and rides like a cloud
Scotty you should talk about tires more. If you have loud road noise switch your tires out for what’s called a touring tire, you’d be amazed how much quieter the road noise is and gentler the car handles bumps.

Really gonna miss the Avalon. I've seen lots of footage of the new Toyota Crown, and it just doesn't cut it for me, the Avalon was a classy flagship.
Yea the crown is just ugly. Idk why toyota even bothered
Too bad the Avalon was NEVER fully appreciated....had it been, there'd BE no Crown. 😎
I actually hope the crown does well, because I means that the real crown sedan could come and it looks really good
The 2nd generation of the Avalon was predicted to be Toyotas biggest mistake ever, not because there was anything wrong, but because there wasn’t. Most of the automotive press thought they were crazy for selling a top of the line Toyota that was far better than the more expensive ES models offered by Lexus.
Well u market demand based on suv or suv presence more than anything so can't argue with carmaker when demand say
Would you recommend the one you have for ride sharing like Uber or package delivery in general?
I now avoid bigger wheels/low-profile tires like the plague. Setting aside the punctures and curb rash issues, I noticed lower-trim versions of cars consistently had better ride quality. Eventually confirmed my suspicion that it was the wheels/tires, after trying same-trim with different wheels.
The hybrid version is only $1-2000 more MSRP. That $14,000 difference is all trim and dealer markup.
I love my 2019 Avalon Hybrid XSE. Ive recouped the 1200 dollar hybrid upgrade two years ago with MPG in the mid to high 40s.Also the XSE in not the top hybrid trim level. That distinction goes to the hybrid limited.

It’s a shame to see it be discontinued but at least they went out on a high note.

I got me a 2019 XLE with 4500 miles. Yep that’s right. It’s awesome. Good mpg if im in eco mode, great power if im in sport. Comfy.

Another great video Scotty. A lot of people think low aspect tires handle better but it's really just the opposite. The wider the sidewall the better the handling. @OldDood. I like Toyota sedans because they are fundamental reliable cars.

I'm lucky. My XSE Camry has low profile tires, and I've had no problems.
That dash cam sound had me looking around like that sounds familiar.

He waves his hands more and he bounces .
Scotty you should talk about tires more. If you have loud road noise switch your tires out for what’s called a touring tire, you’d be amazed how much quieter the road noise is and gentler the car handles bumps.
