When you buy car from a used car lot the old saying goes buyer beware. When you buy a car from a used car lot you never know what could be wrong with it the odometer could say a hundred fifteen thousand miles when in reality it may have a lot more than that. And sometimes these Auto lots will dope up a car just to get rid of it to make a quick dollar. And usually you don't know if the engine has been replaced or the transmission has been replaced or anything of that car's been replaced until you have an experienced mechanic check the car out cuz nothing is going to hide from a high-end code reading scan tool.

I've bought cars in a number of different states and this is the first I've heard of matching signatures. Guess it varies from state to state. How would the state know if you signed the PINK when you received it in the mail unless you had to pick it up at the DMV? Sounds like a good idea but what a pain in the ask.

its a common sales tactic. most salesperson try to pass the car as belonging to elderly person because old people usually don't drive too fast or stress their car engine too much. now most people try to angle in some immigrants name because buyer will ask questions like "why isn't the original car owner here to sell his car?". so salespersons insert some immigrant country name to imply that owner is not fluent in English or does not know local laws to sell his/her car. you'd be surprised how many car buyers fall for this schtick

@ryan rogers I've been ASE master tech for 25 years, I know only half of Scotty's time but mine has been in the obd11 era. And he always talks about his fancy scan tool. But it isn't a magic wand. One example of him only giving you half the information. I think it was this video or another onehe told you how to reset maintenance light on a Toyota it was hold odometer button and turn key on... It's really set to trip A turn key off, then hold button and turn key to run position continue to hold button and watch odometer there will be
      - - - - - witch will count down to zero. Then the light is rest. The best way to find the whole story or an easier way is Google what ur doing and watch serveral videos on the same subject. Don't get me wrong Scotty's really good but he just doesn't give you the whole story. If you need to you can message me on here or Facebook and see if I can give you any info that will make it easier. I just got off the phone with my son who is a c tech and saved him an extra hour's worth of changing a belt on Scotty's beloved Toyota Camry 2.2 liter motor. I am not good finding people on Facebook. So if you look me up as Christopher Brown in Jacksonville Florida you can find me I'll have a red helmet with a hat on top of it is my picture on there so if you friend me or message me I'll message you back if you have any questions and we can compare my notes with Scotty's notes.

the thing is over the last 30-40 years Chryslers have been endless money pits. crap engineering and parts. in the 32 years i worked on cars Chryslers were one of my biggest money makers. at the end of the 70's was the beginning of the end for Chrysler. anyone remember the k cars? the dodge omni? the frame cradle on those cars were crap, the rack and pinions would tear loose from the frame and you either had to replace the frame or cut access ways thru the bottom half so you could rebolt the rack back down to the frame and then reweld the bottom part of the frame where you had to cut into, and they used this crap design for 15 years before moving on to another design.
replacing the frame was not cheap either the job was anywhere from 350 dollars to 550 dollars it depended on if the customer was ok with a junkyard frame or wanted a new one from Chrysler. and this was back in the mid 80's...

Although I know that all cars are not created equally. I must say that the way you take care of your car will be the most important factor in how long the engine I have a 2008 Nissan that currently has around a 190K. I change my oil on time and I drained my CVT every 50K. So far, I have not had any issues other than my tire pressure monitor lights always being on. I see people who have cars with 20000K miles, but you can already tell that the engine is starting to suffer from the lack of care. It's always amazing to see somebody buy something for $25,000 but neglect spending $15-$25 every 5 months for an oil change.

In Los Angeles, 90% of Facebook and craigslist car sales are dealers pretending to be owner-sellers. I tried to buy a used Lexus 3x cia FB and CL and almost got duped, needless to say, I woke up quickly to the shady car business in LA.

So even an Avalon that's been through hell, chopped and changed had very little wrong with it! LOL Just shows what excellent cars they are. An Audi/BMW/Merc of similar age and less mileage that was one owner and CARED FOR, would have created a christmas tree of warning lights and fault codes (ha ha ha ha - in my best Scotty Kilmer voice)

A few years back I looked at a 2008 Toyota Highlander with 140,000 miles. I had looked at CARFAX beforehand and saw engine replacement at around 80K miles. Paint looked faded and it took some doing to unlatch the hood. In short, the Highlander looked abused. When I mentioned to the salesman that this vehicle had an engine replacement at 80K he looked surprised and said really. I gave it a test drive. The Highlander drove well and handled nicely. However, I walked away.

Scotty, i have a LS430, 2005 and my car started shifting very hard first to second ! 134,000mi. I took it to two reputable trans shops and they didn’t know what the problem was. I checked the internet and found a shop in Van Nuys California 89mi. away that said, “ is your LS SHIFTING WITH A CLUNK from first to second” we can repair it if your computer has one of about 6 numbers. Mine did. It took me less than 5 minuted to pull the computer out and sent it to them on a Tuesday they received it Thursday, repaired it and sent it back, received it Friday. I put the computer back in the car and the trans shifted perfectly for the last 2500+mi. The advertised price was $199 with a lifetime guarantee. What a deal and amazing turn around.😉👍🏻

I'd like to take a car to a mechanic like you, Scotty, before buying it, even if it costs me a hundred bucks or more. But I've found that a good mechanic is never available when you want him. And if you wait till he is, someone else might buy the car, especially if the car (or you) is nowhere near the mechanic. That's why I watch your videos and do my own research on a car before buying it. I've found some good deals that way. And that's even when I take the car to the mechanic AFTER buying it.

Thanks about the tip on the Nissans. I bought a 1999 toyota avalon XLS. The OBD Code reader said I needed a mass air flow sensor, o2 bank 1, o2 bank 2. I took your advice and cleaned the Mass air flow sensor. Didn't work so I ordered a new one. I hope with the new air flow sensor the codes will drop. If not I'll try cleaning them like in one of your videos. Any advice you have would be awesome. Thanks Scotty and God bless you my friend and your family as well......:)

Scotty, oil was spilled on a front engine mount in my Holden Cruze during and oil change. I thought so what. About a month later down shifting 4 to 3 was jumpy and often if I coasted down hill at 25mph in third gear the engine would wobble back and forth and it could be felt in the car. With the engine cool I sprayed degreaser all over the mount, waited a minute then washed it off with water. Next day the problem was solved.

First question to ask a seller should be , how long did you own the car ? If the answer is less than a year , I would be concerned , and always drive the vehicle on the highway for a good 15 minutes , some sellers keep the gas tank on empty so that the potential buyer would keep the test drive short

It's tough for young people trying to make a living these days. They need to get to work, but they can't take a bus. So they buy a used cheap Chev or whatever to go from "A" to "B". Then it turns out to be an "endless money pit!" So what can they do? A good used Toyota is too expensive, that's why they bought the Chev in the first place, right? I can relate to this. About 8 years ago I bought a 1994 Ford Taurus wagon. It was only $800 and had only 96k. As a classic it looked clean. I probably looked it over for a good hour before I handed him the cash. I didn't even think too much about it but when I had gone to the DMV to get it plated the DMV told me there where taxes due. But I had to go back to the dealer to pay them. Dealer?! I didn't buy it off a dealer... or did I? Turns out I did and it was a shady deal. Figured out the dealer, paid the tax, got it on the road only to find a few short months later the engine cradle was rusted out. They had welded the cradle to the frame in a way that was hard to see until someone had it on a lift, but the weld had of course broken. Hence it was a pretty dangerous car to drive. I ended up reselling it for next to nothing full disclosure. Luckily it was a cheap car so I didn't lose a lot. But it was one of the first and only times I lost... Never again!

My father and three of his kids have had the Avalon model that was phased out in 2005. My dad's got 243,000 (somewhat abused by grandson). A brother got 255,000. Another brother - hasn't asked. I have 109,000 miles so far - all city miles. Change the oil every 3,000. Transmission drain was 7,500 miles last time with kit and 12500 with kit the time previous. That is about the same frequency in time as people who do long distance driving only. When I am able to get 90,000 miles on a set of rotors, I am not pushing it although the driving conditions are severe. I think that the concept of speed bumps originated in my city - if you drive fast and hard, the car will have problems. Have lifetime alignment with Firestone - what a deal!

I don't need a $5000 scan tool to know not to buy a car with an airbag light. If that thing is on, just walk away. The car has likely been wrecked, not properly repaired, and it could be a major safety hazard that would cost a fortune to fix.

Always buy a new car that way there are no chances of buying a used and abused vehicle. You’ll save an average of $5,000 for buying a used car. If you can afford it that is. I get it.....when you drive off the car lot it’s worth a lot less now but you know it has only been test driven. $5,000 isn’t worth years of headaches.

i was an auto mechanic for 32 years and i also would recommend not buying a car from a used car lot unless they will let you take it to your own mechanic for an inspection first. i have seen cars from used car lots you would not believe,
had one car that was literally two different cars! the back half was from one car and the front from another. when it was on a lift you could see where it was welded together and we checked vins since modern cars have vins stamped in spots all around the car. another guy had bought an 86 olds cutlass in he said he hit a pot hole and now the car was all over the road. i brought in and at 10 MPH i felt like i was in a bumper car. when i inspected it i found 2 bad inner tie rod ends but the big issue was the engine frame cradle was literally broken in half in between where the lower control arm was mounted to it. i told the owner to have it towed back to the used car dealer and tell them replace the frame or take the car back.the used car dealer did the inspection as well so i also told him if they did not fix the issue to report them to the state and the motor vehicle department. also told him if he sued i would gladly give testimony for him. there was no way that frame broke from hitting a pothole unless it was already seriously crack most of the way thru.
and this is just two examples out of 32 years. don't even buy a used car from a dealership unless you can have it inspected by a mechanic you trust. dealerships are no better when it comes to used cars.
