Here's another twist in the song. He sings I hurt you all the time and he does terrible things to someone, but in the end it turns out that he says all this in a mirror. So to himself. The stage show also fits the theme wonderfully. Some people simply feel more comfortable and like new person after self-harm. That's exactly what happens here with Flake. He is thrown into the bathtub in a black suit, doused with sparks and comes out in a glitter suit. A new person.

Yes, he is connected to the pedestal Rachael. If you look carefully, you can see him unclip it when it is lowered. He is also a trained pyrotechnician (because early in their career they realised that was going to be needed), they don't leave anything to chance. A lot of people believe that this is about a sadomasochistic relationship and he is the one inflicting the pain, but When he sings
"Ich seh’ im Spiegel dein Gesicht" " I see your face in the mirror"
hints that the person he’s singing about is actually himself. I believe that the song is instead about self-harm and the pain and pleasure associated with it.

I agree, Till has such a beautiful, full singing voice! I always love hearing it.
In that case, it‘s a very positive development for people like you and me that Rammstein have actually become more melodic in their recent albums!
I can highly recommend for you to watch the official videos for „Adieu“ and „Zeit“. Both are from their most recent album (from 2022) and you can tell Till just is just a lot more comfortable singing melodically nowadays. Adieu is one of my favourite songs from Rammstein anyways, so I‘d love to see you react to it. :)

I always get a big kick out of seeing someone react to a Rammstein performance, especially if they've never seen the band before. Their shock and amazement at what the band do visually is fun to see because it's a total show and people get that, appreciate just how hard the band works to entertain and thrill. They are amazing live! As far as I have been told, that bathtub is not with a trap-door, but have a protective cover/shield installed, but I can't say for certain.
The lyrics are brutal, but interesting, given that there are multiple interpretations of them... He is alone seeing himself in the mirror... He is forcing the other person to watch him in an S/M relation... The audience is watching him with love, while he sings about unspeakable things and he is thus the mirror to their dreams. That is what really sets Rammstein appart from most other artists today :)

almost certainly a shield. I suspect the pyrotechnics are actually separate from the pouring sparks, so there is very little danger to Flake at all. After seeing the Live Aus Berlin show where Till uses a flamethrower to hit small pyro charges (and some take a bit to actually go off), I think they realized having everything actually separate but appear to be connected is the best route to go for "triggered" chain reactions and in this case it adds an extra layer of safety.

There's a compartment built into the bath to shield Flake from the sparks and for him to take off his cost and boots but it does get very hot inside there all the same. Till's natural singing voice is a bass baritone but to hear him singing in a higher register, try Seeman, Ohne Dich or Wer Weiss Das Schon (Hansel & Gretel) which is so beautiful it reduces me to tears every time. Rammstein know exactly how to put in a show. They're more than just musicians, they're performance artists who give 109% every time. You certainly get plenty of bang for your buck with them! SPOILER
    How the tub-effect works:
The coat Christopher ("Flake") wears is made similar to a fire extinguishing blanket.
So he puts that over himself in the tub. The sparks Till pours on him aren't that hot and go out the moment they touch...anything.
Lastly, the pyrotechnic charges that "go boom" are all directional, they only go upwards, not down to where he's lying.
So...it's loud in there, but not that hot/dangerous.

Slight correction: Flake's real name is Christian Lorenz (he plays the synthesizers). There is nobody named "Christopher" in the band. Closest would be the drummer whose real name is Christoph Schneider (a.k.a. "Doom"). The others are Till Lindemann (lead vocals), Richard Kruspe (lead guitar), Paul Landers (rhythm guitar), and Oliver Riedel (bass guitar).

Re: The pedestal and tub stunt. I'm a Broadway stagehand with some Pyro training among a bunch of other certifications. Til is definitely tied off on that pedestal, it's just cleverly hidden. If you look closely, you can see a safety harness integrated into the pants of his costume. He quickly connects and disconnects himself from the safety tether, it's almost impossible to see. It's probably been so thoroughly rehearsed at this point of the tour that pretty much no one in the audience even notices. When Lorenz, the keyboardist goes into the tub, it has a false bottom and he escapes under the stage to do his costume quick change. Til then does the Pyro trick, which I'm going to guess is a bunch of burning metal powder, like magnesium &/or aluminum, being poured or blown with a fan, out of the large jug. Til comes down, Lorenz reappears in his new costume and we transition into the next number.

Since you're trying to hear more of Till's vocal range, you should listen to Ohne Dich or Zeit. A bit more slow and emotional songs. People already mentioned Deutschland which is like a history trip of Germany. That video is full of symbolism, as per usual with Rammstein.
It is very hard to isolate Till just as a lead singer, since the band has a holistic approach to their music. Many elements from their live performance (or video filmed in a set) to their costumes, to the simple prose with a single direct message, to Till's acting and their official videos pouring symbolism everywhere... So yeah, hard to isolate just his voice, all those elements form a final product to be taken as a whole.

i highly recommend if you haven't seen them yet Heilung and Sabaton. Heilung is another one that does great performances so if you like that about Rammstein you'll like Heilung i'd start with In Maidjan. in Sabaton's case they're all about bring history to people through heavy metal Bismarck is a classic place to start with them

Noted, louder vol on Till? I am one of the guys doing the live sound, on video we have noe controll, come to a live show and listen if the sounds are ok :) nice reaction video, loved it :) We usually boost Till's mic around 320mhz, cut some off around 850mhz, do another boost at 1800mhz and upwards, we also have a limiter and a compressor put on his channel but that is a secret ;) and another secret is that a lot of the band members and some of us in the crew are watching reaction videos after a tour to relax. Guess Till or Chriss or someone else might have watch this one ;)

Im proud of you,Miss Ray Ray! *claps wildly* I have heard soo many say "Ramm-Steen",thats how it sounds like for non Americans or non Canadians. But i have never roasted them for it,not even sighed as i know its difficult to pronounce something in a way you arent used to,as you were educated into pronouncing letters and words differently.
And yes,i consider this that one Rammstein song where Till actually shows more range instead of that deep, intimidating "talk" that he is most known for. Did you know that prior to this he used to be a competetive swimmer? I think a German fan even told me that he competed in the Olympics back in the day,i dont know this myself personally, but i tend to trust what people tell me.
Christian aka Flake tends to provoce Till in theese liveshows, wich results in Till giving him a beating, just let it happen 🤣Was waiting for your reaction for when that happened!

The trick with the bathtub is fairly simple, you can see it in another video where there's a shot from above:
Flake is wearing a black trenchcoat and a black (jumpsuit" underneath which simply covers the entire glitter suit up until he is put in the bathtub. Once inside he pulls a fireproof blanket over him (which is stored under a small shelf which also mounts the three pyro charges that create the red explosions when Till pours the sparks onto the bathtub). Flake then simply unzips the covers under the blanket (she also somewhat presses his body agains the tub wall to gain more cover by the shelf), so when he pulls the blanket away after Till signals him that the coast is clear (by lifting up the bathtub at the end) the black coat simply stays inside the bathtub and Flake can do his usual spiel again while he walks back to his keyboards.

The keyboardist Flake Lorenz is actually a very smart guy. He's the main composer along with their guitarist Richard Kruspe. Flake is very humoristic and articulative person.

I don't know this, but I could imagine that Flake (the keyboardist), have some kind of Fireproof Blanket he can put over himself, he should have enough time to do that while Till is being raised.

I wish a Rayvideo only trying to pronounced Rammstein and their songs correctly.
This song for me isn't in a top 10 or probably top 20 Rammstein's songs, but they could put any song in their concerts and seems like a fucking anthem.
I highly recommend the official video of Sonne.

  • @pfeilchen

As i see it, the song plays with the image of sadism, but most of the mutilations and instruments used are also found in battlefield medicine. Right at the beginning Medals are mentioned (quite literally in your face), therefor i think this is about what we do to soldiers, sending them to be hurt and wounded without regret. But in the end we find that we have been looking in the mirror, which means we have hurt ourselves this way.
Pronounciationwise: The letter "a" is in most european countries pronounced like in the word far, which btw gives you a hint how to pronounce the name of keyboard man Flake.
The first song in which Till really showed his singing qualities was probably "Morgenstern". Not too long ago he was singing with french Singer Zaz, the song "Jardin des Larmes" (garden of tears).
