From what I've always understood, when the Hollywood brass forced her to start on diet pills, was the start of a long downward spiral. I, unlike you, never got to meet Mr Rooney, I always liked him, and I'll bet her demise, hit him hard.

I had the immense pleasure of working with both Mickey Rooney and Judy's daughter Lorna Luft in Las Vegas a few years ago. It was an amazing experience and I will always consider myself blessed beyond belief. I will never forget how much love they both had for her after all these years. Whenever Mickey would speak of her his eyes would tear up and Lorna would also get emotional. A couple of years ago Lorna, Liza, and Joe brought her back to Hollywood she is resting at the Hollywood forever cemetery. Mickey is there as well. I go there often and I always sing to Judy. It is something that I treasure. She was by far the greatest talent to ever appear in movies and I have always idolized her ❤❤❤

MGM did not do anything to Judy Garland. The issue is what MGM did NOT do. Garland's mother was the first person who introduced her to pills years before Judy came to MGM. This pill issue was already in place after she came to MGM and started down the path to stardom. Yes, MGM was a maker of stars as commodities. Was Judy Garland going to be an exception to being treated as a commodity? Hell no!! Being a commodity was one of the prices paid for fame regardless of whoever the star was. This was the studio system way at all the major studios. What MGM did not do is get Judy Garland the professional help she needed at a very young age after she came to the studio. The escalation of her fame combined with her pill addiction being fueled by the studio was not giving that girl any type of coping skills for real life. Also, her mother and whoever else outside the studio were not taking any initiative to get the girl the professional help she needed . In this regard, both her mother and MGM had underlying motives which were harmful to Judy as a person. Money was definitely the major factor!! Greed, greed, greed....so, please, stop placing the sole blame on MGM!! MGM did many positive things for other stars!! MGM just did not handle the Garland pill issue appropriately, but MGM did NOT get Judy addicted to pills. That was already in motion before she came to the studio!! Child actors in Hollywood: many of those lives became so screwed up because those children were not mature enough to deal with real life issues, and many of their parents were out for the dough.
My advice to parents who have children who are thinking about show biz: Do not encourage!! Let that child make that decision when they are of age. You'll save yourself and your child many headaches!!!

I loved Mickey despite his flaws. He admitted bluntly in his autobiography. He told it like it was. He didn’t blame others, he took responsibility. One of few autos I liked , because brutally honest. Most who write autos are boring z, and make it sound like they are victims, nothing is ever their fault. One of best autobiography I ever read. It’s true Hollywood went to his head, he got to cocky, married 8 times, gambled.had affairs. He was young. And he did have to pay piper years later, I heard his last years were not happy. Laurence Olivier said he was one of best Hollywood actors of all time, and he didn’t do method acting , he was natural.

During the filming of Meet Me in St. Louis Judy Garland was sitting at a table in the studio commissary with some other adult actresses when Margaret O'Brien walked in. The other adults at Garland's table started talking about the special life O'Brien must have been living as a Hollywood star. Garland nearly went ballistic since the age difference between her and O'Brien meant that that law would no longer allow Hollywood to do to a child like O'Brien what it had done to Garland when she was a child.
But, it wasn't just the law that made a difference. Shirley Temple worked for Warner Brothers and was always treated well by the studio and was never seen as a cash cow by her parents the way Garland was.

Judy Garland was 12/13 by the time she came to MGM. Judy was already a veteran vaudevillian by that time, and Ethel Gumm, her mother, had already introduced her to the pill issues. Ethel Gumm 's underlying motive was dough. Ethel Gumm did not even take any initiative to get Judy the professional help Judy needed for something Ethel herself initiated. Awful, awful!!!

I would have preferred hearing these comments coming from Mickey Rooney, not having the Narrator repeat what Rooney said in past interviews. Also, the editing is terrible with confused, out of timeline order and not supporting the narration. I really wish that RUclips had standards for video postings, especially since thousands of viewers are attracted to the subject matter, but are given badly produced videos, many with misleading content. But the inevitable question has been why they didn't marry. But they were both affected by the pressures and the "pep pills," or "vitamin shots" MGM gave them. What is appalling is that all of this was going on without controls. Had they both had agents to control what the studio could do with them, things might have been different. There was no need for MGM to abuse them they way they did. And being so important to the studio, they were in the best position to negotiate in their mutual best interests, particularly since their salaries were not proportionate to their value. But getting back to the subject, we never really learned the "shocking truth." All of this information has been revealed before. Just another Click Bait for a mediocre video.

One day I had to walk through the reception area and Mickey Rooney was standing there talking to the receptionist. In just the short time it took me to do what I'd gone to that area for, I discovered that Mickey Rooney had the filthiest mouth of anyone I'd ever come across. I swear that every third or fourth word he said was f**k, and that didn't include all the other curse words. I had always liked him as an actor, but I lost a lot of respect for him that day. Was he incapable of having a conversation without a script? He came across as egotistical and disrespectful. It doesn't surprise me that he did nothing ) Judy while she was still living, as she might've taken some of the limelight away from him. He had years or a couple of decades to do so. That's not Judy in the speedboat with Mickey, regardless she worked hard for MGM but they exploited her & wore her out & yes they made great movies together as Andy Hardy & Betsy Booth. Forever Dorothy of course but she was wonderful in everything like The Clock, Meet Me In St.Louis, The Pirate & I Could Go On Singing just to name a few & Oz of course. She was too good for MGM tho she made them heaps of money. Should have won for A Star Is Born or at least tied with Grace Kelly. Oh geez she was a tough lady married 5 times & bearing 3 children, don't know how she found the time but she left behind a memorable volume of work including concerts & radio shows not just films. So sad that the drugs aged & killed her at a young 47. She had SO much more to give us but she definitely needed a break. She'll never be forgotten & TWOO is always shown somewhere around the world. Mickey certainly outlived her dying in 2014 at 93.

It is obvious none of you have read June Allyson’s autobiography, like I have; although it is mostly about June, and Richard (Dick Powell )only a few tidbits about Judy.
But she revealed, around 1950, Judy confided to June, that if Mickey then had proposed
marriage to her, she would’ve married him, in a second !!!
And she confided to June again, later in 1960, that if Mickey proposed to her, again, she would still would marry him in a second !!!
And YES, I read Mickey’s autobiography too; he said he will always see her as a sister …
In later years he thought of opening a dance studio so he and Judy would teach young
hopefuls how to dance … why didn’t this video mention that? 🤨

I think it hurt Judy that Mickey didn't love her romantically. I don't know what more he could've wanted in a woman/partner/wife. I've often wondered what might have happened if they married. Part of me is a little salty Mickey didn't love her like she loved him. Feels like Mickey was influenced by all the rude and negative things the studio execs said about Judy, causing him to want someone else. Of course, I am guessing, but I feel hurt for Judy that he didn't love her that way.

I wonder what would've happened if Mickey loved her romantically instead of like a sister. I think it hurt Judy that he didn't.

Good video but the "secrets" have been common knowledge for years. I expected more insight and understanding which never happened in this video. Such a pity. I did meet a drunk Mickey Rooney in a pizza shop in Santa Monica once.

Repetitive, dull, hacked-up bio of the magnificent Judy Garland. Very poor editing: "Judy" in some clips is actually Elizabeth Taylor, or Deanna Durbin (among others) with Mickey Rooney. The only "shocking truth" about this video is that most of us already knew everything mentioned in it. Rooney died in 2014, so nothing new under the sun here.

I always head that Rooney, in his private life, was a real sub human. Ask his many wives! Not a nice person by ANY definition. How he acted in public was nothing like the real private Rooney. But of course that could be said for many of us I guess. This video, while entertaining, was just click bait!

Lorna has said she thought her mom may have suffered from bipolar disorder and of course everything mentioned here and things not mentioned which includes sexual abuse her dad being a closeted homosexual who was run out of town in a scandal involving a teenage boy. Judy in turn married two gay men herself as did Liza! Both she and Liza have had terrible struggles with mental issues and addiction. It seems the greater artists suffer greatly, think Janis Joplin for example. Great actors as well! So many greats have had the same tragic experiences but not starting in childhood.
