Natural beauty, but if you see pics of her around this time, with less dolled up make-up, and compare her to the beauties of the day, it's easy to see why she was insecure about her looks.
If it weren’t for The Wizard of Oz and this awesome documentary, I wouldn’t be a film buff, a lover of classic cinema, or someone pursuing a job in the film industry! Watching this documentary again was nostalgic, charming, & even gave me goosebumps several times. Cheers to those who become lovers of cinema because of this excellent documentary of a genuine American classic!
I watch this movie since I was a kid, or when I was in elementary school when my old teacher played the movie for us. Now I'm in junior in high school ❤
RIP Dame Angela Lansbury What an incredible legacy this iconic movie has still touched so many people!!! All the toxic drama that was going on behind the scenes and MGM's work system.
Actually just watched this last week on tv. I love to watch these types of movies to help me break away from the life we're living today. All this hate, violence, no compassion from people is so hard to deal with daily. Watching innocent movies like this allow you to just calm down and have some peace.
I’m 31 and yet still to this day find hard to believe The Wizard Of Oz was made in 1939. It was the first time I was exposed to Hollywood’s Golden Age outside the Disney Animation canon. What happened behind the scenes doesn’t change my respect for this classic.
The original 1990 CBS Broadcast was equally edited: the Baum mini-bio was excised, the LIFE GOES TO THE MOVIES 1939 montage, as well as everything after the Oscar sequence.
The Wizard of Oz is my childhood movie. I love the cast and sad that all of them are deceased. But the legacy of the Wizard of Oz will continue. Judy Garland really had a loving voice
Ray Bolger saying right off the bat that Judy Garland (a literal child at the time of filming) wasn't pretty, but "plump", is actually wild. Women are obviously still held to impossible standards today but to say that on camera with your whole chest about a little girl is just crazy to me. And not that it matters what she looked like anyway, but she was absolutely beautiful!
Love the documentary so much. When I first saw this at age 4 after the movie was over on VHS, I was like "What is this?" I didn't know what a documentary was? But I love it. Obviously I am a Wizard of Oz fan. Also R.I.P. Angela Lansbury.
A tragedy what Hollywood put Judy and Shirley through. Such a dark industry. With plenty of secrets just lurking in the shadows. But atleast we got one of the most recognizable timeless movies of our time.
She was close if being cast as Mary Poppins probably why Disney brought her back for that other film by Bedknobs and Broomsticks in the 70’s along with David Tomlinson who also was in Mary Poppins
I remember watching this on TV with my parents in the early 90’s. We taped it with our VCR and watched it frequently. Years later I bought the 75th anniversary DVD set and we watched it again since it was an extra on one of the DVD’s. Great to watch it again on here!
We had a TV recording of The Wizard of Oz from November 1991 on VHS. After the movie, it cut to this documentary which I guess my mom taped from a previous viewing from a few years prior. Brings back a lot of memories.
@@thegoodguy44Judy garland was slapped by director Fleming for laughing everytime when they filmed the scene when lion was introduced when that scene was filmed…
12:48 Gorgeous Gale Sondergaard. Too bad they never had the thought to do a live action version of Snow White because Gale would've been a great glamorous witch (and they could cast someone else as the bad witch so Gale wouldn't have to be the bad version).
I love this beautifully narrated documentary. There are different versions of it though. This one includes some scenes with Rooney and Garland I had never seen before but it’s missing the segment about the contributions of various directors and why Victor Fleming had to leave.
You should include: the abuse dorothys actor experienced bts, the asbestos snow, the injuries both the tin man and scarecrow experienced due to there makeup, the overheating the cowardly lion experienced due to his costume
It makes me wonder how much the film and the stars would have changed had Dorothy and the Wicked Witch been changed: Shirley Temple or Gayle Sondergard. But I still think they made the right casting choices; I just wish they treated Judy better. Hamilton was supportive to her as much as possible; both will be missed.
This might be the first DVD making of (yes I know it was originally a tv special) that I ever saw and given that the 1999 WIzard of Oz DVD was in heavy rotation growing up I watching A LOT.

This has probably already been said but Margaret Hamilton is THE definitive Wicked Witch of the West. Also I miss Angela Lansbury. R.I.P. to these legendary ladies.
So sad to realize all the people who made this wonderful movie are gone, even the presenter of this documentary Angela Lansbury is not among us anymore 😢

Look up Shirley Temple's interview with Larry King as to what happened to her & her mom when they were brought into MGM offices & left alone with Arthur Freed & William B. Mayer... when Shirley was like, 11 😢
@stanfordite1 me simply making ppl aware of an interview isn't a lie. What Shirley Temple herself claimed happened to her & her mom at MGM that day might be. Do you have evidence of her lying about this? Because she made it pretty clear
"She wasn't pretty, she was plumped" I gasped! She was sooo pretty! The men was so cruel with her
When I tell you my jaw dropped! She was beautiful

“She wasn’t pretty, she was plump” sir… have you seen yourself??
I know right. I don’t think she was plump.
Maybe plump meant something different way back then 😅

You said it beautifully. I pray each night. I grew up in the 60s and 70s. Magical time. In my life.
This movie is undoubtedly a masterpiece.

Seeing how they made the tornado in this documentary is what inspired me as a kid to pursue a career in film and tv vfx. Changed my life ♥
Happy 85th Anniversary, The Wizard of Oz (1939)!
Just in time to release the first part of Wicked: Part 1.
The pain, trauma and bullying the cast endured to make this classic should never be forgotten. ❤💔❤

May they all rest in peace.

It was probably meant as a compliment but it certainly hits different now.
agreed, although I think it would be better if men learned to keep their 'compliments' to themselves 😅
Ray was spot on with his comment.
thank you so much for this valuable input, CiscoBudge567
By 2029, this movie will celebrate its 90TH Anniversary, and hopefully it’ll include a theatrical re-release.
There was a theatrical re-release in 2013 for the 75th anniversary. It was remastered for IMAX and presented in 3D, and it was amazing to experience.
@@brockbuster I remember that '13 re-release. I was so disappointed that I missed it. 😕

Judy did not experience abuse. The snow was not asbestos, it was gypsum.
15:38 the way he used that arm was interesting
Amazed that Buddy Ebsen outlived a majority of the cast, his vocals were better than Jack's but Jack had the physicality.
