@@zyamadeadborn1785 Yeah, was thinking the same! Some smal branches on the bottom to hold the box stabel and some random. On the pipe I was thinking about å branch going towards the mouth piece, and drill a hole so I can fit the mouth piece there. Sounds good? Was thinking about some leafs laying on the log box, or is ut too much?

@@runemoe9559 I'd recommend you look at the "poker" pipe shape. It's generally a log with a tobacco chamber drilled in and a stem poking from the side. That one base shape could be customised into some more "nature-looking" one with the main part being like a thump and the stem and mouthpiece - a branch.

I love the video and when I saw that part I had a flashback to basically doing the same thing and having some unpleasant results.
I do it with an angled grinder every time I make projects like these, but I put the wooden piece in a vice and do it from there, it gives much more exact results

Next time make sure to use briar wood for the pipe bowl, and only use natural waxes on the outside of the bowl, none on the inside. That way your pipe will be able to be smoked. You can also use pear wood, cherry wood or rose wood, but the best wood for a smoking pipe is briar wood, it resist better the heat.
Thank you! I have searched a bit after I made the pipe, and found out that briar is the most commomd wood. I don't have access to briar atm, but I have some birch burl wood, and that is the hardest and strongest wood I have local. Do you have any ideas if that will work? This is a long shot since this was 3 years ago, but I am looking to make a pipe, but I'm curious as to how to clean a home made one. Any ideas or am I overthinking it?
The spade bit can be ground to the shape of the bowl . . . makes things a bit easier. In some complex briar sculpture pipes, I've gone so far as to cut the tobacco bowl out with a carbon steel folding knife! Try that! The bowl is drilled first and the smoke hole has to be aimed precisely to the bottom . . . there is a way to make a 'jig' to assure accuracy from a drill press . . . rather than by hand . . . a smoke hole drill bit is also fabricated, but from steel rod.

I would go back and take away the internal varnish. Either leave it bare, or mix ash with water and paint that on the inside. Great work apart from this. The case looks amazing too!

@@Dkthearn depends. Probably want to use something without glues. Certain adhesives are better than others.

@@BradShreds Wouldn't it still be dangerous to have those chemicals in your mouth? And what about the possibility of accidentally inhaling? Wouldn't you want to reduce the chances of breathing in chemicals if you breathe in accidentally? These aren't rhetorical questions, I'm legitimately asking because I'm new to the world of pipe making (but not woodworking). I always use mineral oil and I never finish the inside of the bowl, but I'm making cannabis pipes (It is legal in my state) so you're supposed to inhale on those.

, I was wondering about the Danish oil in the bowl. Also the walls look really thin.
They might look thin, but they do their job and I dont think they have to be thicker.

Man... that's not a smokable pipe.
I agree. the bowl wall is too thin, the stem is glued to the bowl make it impossible to clean it and he should not use finishing oil.
M K is it okay to use wood glue?? i use titebond 2
@@Geoff nope. A regular bought pipe always has a friction fit. To enable the cleaning of the stem and clearing blockage from the tobacco. Also the finnish inside and the glue even in the stem is going to heat up and release toxins.
Michael De Coninck thanks for your reply. That sounds understandable. I'll keep that in mind. I made my bowl out of one piece, but my stem is made out of two pieces, with a carved out channel and glued together.
I'll replace my stem with a commercially bought one so there's less risk of leaching chemicals from my glue (although the smoke at the stem should be much cooler than at the bowl end, and titebond 2 has a max heat limit of 200-400f). I still dont want to risk extra chemicals, even at lower smoke temps of around 80-100f.

um conjunto muito bonito. parabens. mas voce entende pouco de cachimbo(tobacco pipe) faço algumas observacoes tentando ajudar. a madeira tem que ser briar porque resiste ao calor da queima do tabaco no fornilho, depois precisamos tirar o canudo para limpeza e a piteira precisa removida para troca por desgaste. e o verniz usado(nao serve o oleo) precisa resistir ao calor. por outro lado. sua arte ficou linda.

to make a bowl cutter, I took an old paddle bit (3/4 inch) and used a grinder to remove the tips, both center and sides, and then rounded over the whole bit. I also sharpened the sides from the center out, one on one side and then flip it to sharpened the other side. I think that this is called a "flat spoon bit" but I don't know.

Сверло нужно переточить изменив форму. Таким нельзя!!! Нужно убрать остриё сверла. Срезать полностью направляющий шип. Клей не допустим! Такой клей как ПВА он от температуры становится снова липким, мягким, текучим. От влаги из воздуха и табака он то же станет снова прежним, жидким.
Drill need to reground changing shape. This is impossible !!! Need to remove the tip of the drill. Cut off the full guide pin. Glue is not allowed! Such a glue as PVA it becomes again sticky, soft, fluid from the temperature. From moisture from the air and tobacco, it will become the same again, liquid.

@@youngbierbankl7814 He screwed up the bowl. There's a large pit left by the bit that has no airflow, and will cause whatever you smoke in it to go unburnt, becoming a complete waste. He would have been better off using a round bit.

@@samhall856 not ideally, no. With the hole drilled the way it is, you'd have to start the bowl over with a rounded bit.
@@youngbierbankl7814 in addition to previously stated, I see some more engineering mistakes.
First, see how the smoke channel in the stem made. At around 0:22 you can see, that there is an angle in the smoke channel under the bowl. That angle makes a great trap for moisture and tars from tobacco, and it cannot be properly cleaned, because a pipe cleaning rod cannot go through there.
Second, the mouthpiece is made of two pieces, glued together. The smoke channel in that is made with a mini-drill with a milling cutter. This method cannot make a straight path for smoke, so there will be turbulences, that make smoking uncomfortable. In smoking pipes the smoke channel is polished thoroughly, so nothing bothers the smoke. Also, all these little obstructions catch moisture and tars, and that pipe will soon smell as an ashtray.
Third, it is glued together. Not only it makes proper cleaning almost impossible, it also gives us a question: how would that glue act under high temperature? As far as I see, there is some sort of woodworking glue, like polyvinyl acetate. I really doubt it's good at withstanding high temperature, like over 60 degrees Celsius.
So, as a pipe smoker with some experience, i wouldn't smoke this one.

That craftmanship is truly impressing! What tree did you use? :) I was thinkin of doing one with Walnut and Cherry/Oak

Some how i can't read your last comment, but I used Danish oil, since that is food and toy safe. I also use that on my wooden coffeecups if are interested in watching my other videos. I used oil inside the bowl too, but the experts in the comment section said that was a mistake. I don't know how to treat the inside off the bowl right, and what type of oil you need to use, if you need oil inside the bowl. I have seen, and also smoked with a lot of different pipes, and my experience is that the inside get burned anyway. So make your walls thicker than, and the hole smaller. 18 mm hole should be perfect! If the hole is as big as this one, it will be harder to get the tobacco thight enough, and you will not get the good fire u want..

I had no idea how to build a curved stem! I usually use a pice of Willow because it's naturally hallow. And do a male female insert to be able to take it apart to clean. I use softwood for the bowl ( juniper, pine, box elder, ECT.) And then hemp oil on the inside bowl Olney. Boiled linnseed oil for the rest. Quite an interesting take on all that fancy equipment too! I oln I have a small Dremel and hand tools.

You spent more time and effort on the case then the pipe. And permanently affixing the stem to the bowl was a major mistake.
Yeah I know that now that I shall not glue that two parts togheter. But I was not able to make it fit tight enough without using glue.. Next time I am gonna make a pipe I will take yours and all the other advices I have got. Thank you :)

i think that you are not a smoker . if use this pipe for smoking , cannot be last long , because it is difficult to clean, and no filter can insert the pipe.

I've done something pretty similar to this. All that was different really, was that I burned designs onto the outside of the box, and used a clasp like latch instead of magnets. And I at the time all I had were basic hand tools, so it took about a month to get it right.

@@runemoe9559 You could use that rounded Dremel bit you used to clean out the stem to work details such as flowers or wings and the like into the bowl and stem.

@@Klabauterbub thats great to hear! Use Briar instead of the wood I used. Also make it posible to take of the mouth piece so you can clean it. Dosent recomend glue ether.
