    From what I recall hearing of Duke Nukem Forever's development, George Broussard's obsession with wanting to make things perfect with his work made work on the game a literal hell for all involved.

      @jasonblalock4429 2 года назад +50

      Yeah, there was a big post mortem published in 2009 (iirc), which had a ton of unflattering stories about Broussard. One anecdote that stuck with me is that Broussard was obsessed with keeping up with ALL new technology. So, like, after playing The Thing game which had amazing snow physics for the time, he demanded a snow-based level that would beat it.
      (And, of course, the problem there is that The Thing's developers had been laser-focused on making a great snow sim, and put most of their time into it from the start. Broussard wanted to equal their effort, but on a whim.)

      @@jasonblalock4429 One comment of his I read was; "we will make sure that Duke Nukem Forever is the best game on the market when it's released" (something along those lines anyways). Guess he truly wanted that reality... very unrealistic. Unsurprising that this didn't happen.

      @@FrameRater I wish I would've had the foresight to save one developer's comment in a forum years ago, which further explained that Broussard's problem was not that he was a tyrant, but that he was a teddybear of a guy. Apparently he was very pleasant to be around and no one wanted to confront him about his bad decisions, either chosing to go along with them or leaving the project altogether.
      Something to consider, as there seems to be a lot of unwarranted vitriol for Broussard as a person.

Which they finished at the direction of 2K because it was either Gearbox help polish what was made and release it OR 2K sue 3D Realms for wasting millions upon millions of their dollars and having nothing to show for it but multiple different incomplete, builds of games....
      Gearbox who 3D Realms sold the IP to have made zero Duke Nukem games...Likely because Duke Nukem is kinda garbage, was never really amazing except for children who loved the dirty words and pixel strippers.....

    I think the Quake engine is actually "id Tech 2" (which encompasses Quake 1 and 2), since id Tech 1 is for the DOOM engine games. My research on the matter brought a lot of inconsistent results, unfortunately, so I'm not really sure.
    4:55
    Maybe it's better to drop the "id Tech" term to avoid confusion. You can call Quake 1's engine the "Quake 1 engine", and Quake 2's engine the "Quake 2 engine".
    Would love to hear your thoughts on this, Framerater. Good video as always!

      Saying "the Quake engine" felt wrong so I tried my best to avoid it... shouldn't have done that. I'm now reading something (Giant Bomb summary) that calls Quake's engine "id Tech 1.5". They were given the name "id tech #" years later to make them fit the then new naming scheme, so it's really confusing and all the stuff written at the time they were being used refers to them as "quake # engine". It's a bit too messy to be honest.

  • @Web720
    @Web720 2 года назад +50

    Fun fact:
    Despite popular beliefs, DNF 2011 did NOT use the UE2.5 engine. The engine development history is Quake 1 engine -> Quake 2 engine -> Unreal Engine 1 -> Unreal Tournament 1 branch of UE1 -> UT1 613. So DNF 2011 is running on a heavily modified UE1 build 613 that this version of the leak also uses. They backported some stuff from UE2 into UE1, the only other dev I can think of that did this was Tripwire where they backported some UE4 features into UE3 for Killing Floor 2 iirc.
    Another fun fact:
    The latest build of DNF that we have is the October 2001 build, pretty near to the E3 showcase. However there is the fabled 80-90% completed version of DNF that is built on top of DNF 2001, the December 2002 build. This was before or a bit after George Brussel Sprouts creamed his pants when he saw Doom 3's lightning and shadows tech and wanted that in his game. The new render apparently, when implemented on top of DNF 2002, made the game too dark and the textures just black. So they had to restart development again, that's why the 2003 version of DNF shown looked VERY Doom 3 like. The Dec 2002 version apparently had over 10 hours of gameplay and it was going to be like a Deus Ex Duke.
    I would post links for the sources, but RUclips REALLY doesn't like links that aren't YT related.

    • @ElOctopodo

      The story about the 90% complete version is, judging by every account, a complete fallacy. Only Frederik Schreiber supports this narrative, and even though he had access to the betas, his track record as a developer who can discern when a game is fully finished or not is spotty at best. What developers have talked about before though is that the 2002 build had "way more cool stuff in it", but that doesn't necessarily means any of it was more polished than in 2001. Broussard's development roadmap essentially boiled down to coming up with "cool stuff" for the game, and seeing if it clicked when implemented (a strategy that worked great with Duke3D but was disastrous for Forever), he even got in a twitter argument over that same point a while back. Charlie Wiederhold, another developer present during this time, explained in the Duke4 forums years ago that, had they stopped adding stuff and had they focused in polishing what they had (which they did not), the game only would have been ready by late 2003/early 2004. My assumption is that the 2002 build will contain lots of left-field concepts that DNF developers have fond memories of (like a full working arsenal or the inclusion in the story of the NegaDuke character, an evil clone of Duke Nukem created by Doctor Proton), but in essence it will not be any more complete of a game than the 2001 version that leaked. My two cents.

    Even though I am forever (lol) grateful that we finally have the 2001 build of DNF and all of us can FINALLY enjoy it the 1998 build always looked really cool too. It definitely would be fun to mess around with it and not too long ago, someone did leak some assets from 1998. Even back then 3D Realms was able to pull off some incredible stuff even with the Quake 2 engine based on the leaked models from the 1998 build. The team was unbelievably talented and way ahead of their competitors when it came to innovative ideas and design elements. 1998 to me also has the BEST sounding Duke Nukem theme out of the entire series and is one of my most favorite musical themes of all time. Really hope one day we get our hands on that build as well!

    What frustrated me back then and ever since was that I would have been more than fine with Forever not being cutting edge. I'd have honestly taken another Build engine game and been perfectly content.
    Small related thought: All the post-3D games focus on the humor and action, which... y'know... obviously, but some of my favorite moments in 3D were the quiet exploration parts with the creepy ambience echoing through the city levels. Scrapping the id Tech work was really the stroke that put Forever on development life support. They could have made a good game on that engine. Would it have been the most "advanced Quake engine game"? No, not with games like Half Life and Halo around the corner. But it would have been a good game that people liked and it probably wouldn't have meant an end for the franchise.

      That's a good question, which would probably require a deep psychological study. I will say though, whereas most RUclipsrs will talk about one thing regarding a game, I prefer doing what nobody else has. My journey on RUclips is a weird, not entirely successful one, but as long as it's fun I'm gonna stick around. 😃

    I thought that I read that the work on the quake 1 engine was only done for screenshot purposes, as the quake 2 source code was not available to 3D Realms at that time.
    But could be that this was only a rumor?
    13:48 I never noticed the kiss there ^^
    Nice seeing FrameRater covering the DNF topic. Since the leak of the 2001 build I also got into this interest about DNF again. :)
    Am I the only one, who also would like to see an leak of the 1998 build? Seeing the 1998 E3 trailer, at least something was there. I liked the content and feel in the mines. Had some classic and also interesting concept for me, with all the ducking in the minecart or escaping the giant rock like indiana jones. And yeah, I like in generel the feeling of late 90s games. So the graphics are also somehow cool to me.

      Now that the 2001 build was leaked, I REALLY want to see the 1998 build. I doubt we will, or at least not for another 30-some years (hey, I hope I'm wrong!). The 2006-era also interests me, mostly because of how secretive it is. Supposedly Duke had a working jetpack around that time.

    Not true what you say at 10:10 .. I worked a lot with Quake 2 back in the day. Converting stuff from Q1 to Q2 engine (models, textures, levels) was relatively easy. Coding had to be redone but i also did that successfully and i suck at coding.

    • @FrameRater
      @FrameRater  Год назад +1

      @@FrameRater Oh, quick answer! Well, if he said so.. but it would have been really a waste to just throw everything away. When I work on games i always try to reuse stuff i already have, even if it's just as a placeholder.
      By the way, very interesting video i just watched the other parts! This all wakes a lot of memories. Duke3D was the first game I made maps for.. the build editor was fun and easy to use. Later i also started to make levels for Quake and Quake2 but didn't really like the editor at first.. later there were better ones available. I also started to make mods around '99 i think. One of my projects was a mod that ported contents from Quake 1 to Quake 2. Most of the stuff was actually working so thats how i know it's doable, even for someone with little experience back then. :)

    I wonder why IDtech2 was used. There isn't a significant difference between Q1 and Q2 engine that couldn't be implemented by a single coder.
    3D realms had a chance to create an icon that change everything (which was Half-Life, the game based on the same principles - interactivity and setpieces). But no, "we gotta be better than everyone!". EGO ruined Duke. Ironic.

    Geroge Broussard seems like the kind of guy that just needs to let things go and let the game come out. I mean a game might not be good but it's better to get the development hindsight and possibly make another game than have one game take such a long time to come out.
