  • This is a quick video on where to look for rust and rot on a panther platform car. This mostly applies to vehicles exposed to road salt, a southern vehicle will probably not have these issues. Any questions please comment!

    Great video. The gas tank on my car recently fell on the ground after filling it up at a gas station. Someone was calling me on my cell phone and I pulled into a space while in the gasoline station. While I was parked and attending to my phone I heard a noise. I thought someone had thrown something at my car or may be a tire hit my car from the highway. I saw nothing. So I got back in the car. I did not jump on the highway right away which was next to the gasoline station. After a while I started up the car and someone got behind my car while I had it in reverse. I did not in a million years think that I would be dragging my gas tank. It really freaked me out. I called me insurance and a tow truck came and put those pulling straps to hold it. They could not move it because it was full of gasoline. So they had to use a small flat jack to lift it up. The straps held it in place. I am thinking about putting a long metal flat bar attached to the chassis with Chrome screws to prevent the tank from falling again. The tank is sitting upright in a vertical position in front of the trunk. Death was following me, but God was on my side I guess. For those who have have not had this happened to them CHECK underneath that the gas tank is secure from those metal straps as well as the fuel lines and brake lines, especially if your car is old and has rust. Do not ignore the rust. We are used to just checking under the hood, but if you are living in the north you are at risk because of the rust. I hope I have saved lives with this information. Get undercoating and clean that rust before it spreads like a cancer. It can be very very dangerous and serious, especially if you have family riding in your car. This is serious stuff. Thank you for sharing your video with us.

      @@wjye Finally found a nice one in CT yesterday, black on black 2003 LS Ultimate. I guess they salt less there because for being a non-garage kept car it was pretty dam close to rust free underneath. Anyway thanks again, helped to know what to check out

      I think this car was a 2008 or so. Unless I'm mistaken, the MMX driveshaft was only from 98' to 01. I could be mistaken but I think all the other P71's afterwords just had aluminum driveshafts.

      Looks like a p71 driveshaft. I don't know what the metal matrix DS is but this is an 03+ p71 (can tell from the rubber floor and the front suspension) and they all had aluminum driveshafts. I thought my 01.5 did as well but I can't clearly remember now.
      I was under the impression that all police spec vics had an aluminum drive shaft for the increased top speed.

    Sadly, both of my torque box spots on my 98 Town Car are ate up pretty badly. I didn’t know the 03 and newer frames were stronger.
    Sad to let such a great running car go because of two spots on an otherwise solid frame.

    I have a 2001 grand marquis it has no rust except for the drivers side dog leg and I noticed a lot of others have the same rust as well any advice at keeping at bay? I might sand blast it then try spray some wd 40 in the seam what do you think?

    • @wjye
      @wjye  8 месяцев назад +1

      If it’s not rot, sand it and paint it. Fluid film works great to keep rust at bay. Anything like old oil or grease will work too.

    • @commonsenseisdeadin2024
      @commonsenseisdeadin2024 6 месяцев назад

      What is the "dog leg"?
      If you sand blast it then you just need to bare metal prime it, paint and clear.
      If it's more than surface then I'd suggest encapsulating it (por-15 is solid)

    • @stevenboll322
      @stevenboll322 6 месяцев назад

      The dog leg is the part of the quarter panel that reaches down towards the bottom of the wheel well by the back door

    • @commonsenseisdeadin2024
      @commonsenseisdeadin2024 6 месяцев назад

      @@stevenboll322 ahh makes sense now 😂
      The issue there (as well as the area from the bottom of the front fender to the front door) is the amount of dirt and shit that gets packed in there! Por-15 and then fabricate a ramp to kick it all out and seam seal (or the like) around it or just cut the section out considering it's under the car as well as the side "ground effects" cover it.
      Oh and if you cut any body panels, first you need to always seal the bare metal (obviously) but do not use cut off wheels! For one, obviously paint does not like heat but either does metal (as seen in the video where the cats are and the tail pipes run)
      The front fender always gets dirt and foliage and gets stuck behind the fender well so it doesn't get washed out when washing the car.
      The best solution to stop it is to cut all compromised metal out. With how thin sheet metal is once it's "surface" rust, it is already pitted and 50% through!
      BTW, do not use WD-40! As he said, fluid film (which is lanolin oil/wax) or used oil works good however oil is messy and needs to be cleaned off otherwise it can build up some unwanted elements and aid in corrosion. "Fluid film" can also end up loosening scaled rust so it's a good idea to spray it on and give it a few weeks then go over everything with a wire brush again and apply again then you are set for a while (some people see years of coverage but your flavor will vary. Just check on it every oil change, you will see the film)
