Crown Vic ‘Fatal Flaw’ steering column bearing CHEAP easy fix

A cheap maybe even free fix for the steering column bearing that’s notorious for failure. Well this isn’t the ‘right’ way to fix it, it’s worked well. I have the OEM kit to fix it but the zip tie method was so easy and cheap to do and has worked perfectly fine that I haven’t bothered to do it. This is a quick fix to get you back on the road or as a peice of mind. This is a response to Mr Randoms video on the same topic.

What kind of zip ties do you use? The force pulling on that shaft is immense. My zip ties stretched and failed immediately. And they were beefy.

I just used black plastic zip ties from Walmart. They’re still holding strong. You can get stainless steel zip ties and try them too. In my case there wasn’t really a ton of force pulling down the shaft. I’d take a closer look at that, there might be something else going wrong too.

Hey man can I email you a video or what happened to mine? I think it’s exactly what you’re talking about. My mechanic just ordered me a junk yard steering column assembly but I may just try the zip tie trick.

Post up a video if you can. If it falls out you can pop it and the shaft back in place. You just gotta make sure the shaft is seated properly on the splines or your wheel will be off and it’ll feel bad.

I watched your video. Yeah that’s what happened to mine when I dropped my dash to replace a heater core. Zip tie method fixed it up. Might still be best to get the actual recall kit as the column itself isn’t bad, just the plastic bushing slipped out. Dumb design by ford
