- At Kopitiam, you can try traditional Malaysian dishes, and experience traditional Malaysian coffee shop culture. Kopitiam is co-owned and operated by Chef Kyo Pang, a Malaysian refugee who has taken asylum in the United States, as it is illegal to be queer in her home country. A majority of the trinkets in Kopitiam, as well as some ingredients, are from Malaysia, purchased by her family and shipped to NYC. Insider stopped by Kopitiam to taste Kyo's take on generational family recipes, and try Malaysia's national dish - spicy and savory Nasi Lemak.
EDITOR'S NOTE: This video shows the dish, Nasi Lemak, being eaten with chopsticks, which is not how the dish is traditionally eaten. At 5:10 in this video we say that Nasi Lemak is topped with white rice. Traditionally, the dish is made with coconut milk rice.
At 4:09 Moonlynn Tsai, former co-owner of Kopitiam says, "In Malaysia, you can still get hanged if you're LGBTQ." There aren't laws in Malaysia that state members of the LGBTQ community, or those who participate in gay or lesbian sexual activity, will be hanged or put to death. There are recent documented cases of LGBTQ discrimination in the country under Sharia Law, which applies to Muslilims in Malaysia, and which has resulted in punishment. There are also additional documented cases of extra-legal discrimination.

everything looks nice BUT.. no one eats Nasi Lemak using chopsticks.. :)
Agree
She eats abit and goes. MM OMG. Smfh
I am sure the food is nice at this cafe but yeah.. no one eats Nasi Lemak with chopsticks.. you either use your hands or a fork and spoon..
@@gary_tms XD
There is no spoon on the table bro
I know Malaysia is a fusion of Malay, Indian and Chinese but they don't use chopsticks especially on their well known dish.
thats true
Ikrrr 😂😂
We only use chopsticks on the Chinese dishes
That’s so true Malaysian never used chopsticks to eat nasi lemak
Felt like food insider just stereotyped Asians accidentally. A subtlety of racism.
Eating Nasi lemak with chopsticks 😂 Malaysians be like 'dude hold my sambal belacan'
Anonymous 00 hai
Hahahhahahaha they doesn't know we eat Nasi Lemak with bare hand
She wants to enjoy the flavor on each grain of rice with the chopsticks
Anonymous 00 No one reacts regarding the (lack of) skills?
Oh damn 😂
I'm malaysian chinese ,i'm pretty sure we don't use chopsticks to eat Nasi Lemak
I'm form Malaysia and yes we don't used chopsticks while eating nasi lemak. XD
True
Yes lol
And bakuteh is *D E L I C O U S*
We use hand or spoon
We are not full on asian
I am from Singapore, the neighbouring country of Malaysia. I am very sure Malaysia's law DO NOT hang anyone from the LGBTQ community. And why is there a need to state that in the video when one could just celebrate Asian cuisine without any such farce?
yeah. thanks for bringing this up. Literally nobody is hanged for being LGBT. And it also only applied to muslim
Its not western media without something homosexual in it..
Globalist trying to push down their things? Well media would always be media regardless west or east.. if its only about food, not quite the attraction, so to 'spice' it up, add on some 'sambal' to make it tasty 😆😆😆
@@abdullahzubair3922 well there is that whole debate for the past year or so where the government wants to enact sharia law on non-Muslim which is a complete fuckery and bullshit. Also lgbt may not be hanged but the government are ACTIVELY seeking out Lgbt ppl and putting them to JAIL.
PLS do not downplay this shit when its real or if u are not part of the lgbt community in Malaysia. Its 2020 and honestly getting jailed for 10+ years just for being gay is JUST AS FUCKED UP and that applies to all races.
Christopher Keroro yea but the sharia law was rejected in the parliament because Malaysia’s governing system is democratic and there is more than 1 race and religion at play here. It wasn’t the government that wanted to, it was SOME people in the government. And I have to disagree that the government is ACTIVELY looking for gays or lesbians or transgenders to put them in jail. I do know that, the approach is different if you’re a Muslim.
You'll not get hanged for practicing lgbtq in Malaysia. You only get hanged if you eat nasi lemak using chopstick
You got us in the second half
😂😂😂😂
Yes chopstick with nasi lemak are offense to us
Go tell 'em!
Eating nasi lemak with hand: normal.
Eating nasi lemak with spoon and fork: also normal.
But, eating nasi lemak with chopsticks: unbelievable. This is new invention. She's not from Earth.
dude she could barely get any rice with it
Haha..agree...and I am chinese, eat with fork and spoon, my sons eat with hands.
If anyone catches me using chopsticks to eat a single kachang, 1 ikan bilis and 2 grains of nasi lemak rice, please smack me across the face asap.

@Jade traditionally nasi lemak is eaten using our right hands in malaysia but often times we just use spoon and forks. People kept mentioning the chopsticks is because we never use chopsticks in Malaysia

Imagine eating pasta or steak with chopsticks. That’s exactly how we Malaysian feel right now.

Never heard of someone getting hanged because of LGBTQ. Sajat seems fine to me.

Ok, I'm Indonesian but eating nasi lemak with chopsticks is sacrilegious
Looks really appetizing and tasty.
But had to say this, before you publish anything about a country's law, please get the fact right.
No one has ever been hang in Malaysia for being an LGBTQ and the newspaper cuts you shown are about laws which applicable only to Muslims which the owner of the shop is not. You cannot say seeking an asylum when you're not sentence for an offence. She stated that she was afraid of people and her family judging her not from the law enforcement.
Though there are discriminations against the community, what are not should not be overstated.
Ps: really love this channel but please, put the agenda aside from food from it's contents. This time, it had gone beyond subliminal and become blatant advocation.
Never in my mind for my comment to be seen as condemning any party. Though this might be too big to ask, Please, for those who are replying to this comment, refrain from making any comment about the shop owner. We are not her acquaintance, we do not know her real circumstances. So please don't make any assumption.
Sorry, long posting.
Thanks... i am about to comment about that... the video was misleading about the laws in malaysia.
Smells like immigration or asylum fraud tbh
Exactly true. Couldn’t get my head around her reason to leave Malaysia; and there is no such hanging for ppl here who are part of the LGBTQ community.
If you claim gay, you can get asylum( immigration permit) lots easier. I think she is using her “gay” as an excuse to get asylum just for better opportunities.
LMAO here come the homophobic Malaysians

This episode touches the deepest part of me and my identity. The host is Muslim, just like me. And the both owners are LGBTIQ individuals, just like me. I am from Indonesia, it's similar to Malaysia in how the society treats us as homosexual. And the story of their struggle is real, living in a muslim majority country as minority. Thank you Insider ! I hope more and more episodes have inspiring background story. ❤️🧡💜💙💚💛

Eating rice with chopsticks breaks my mother's heart
Kesian pulak tgok minah Parsi tuh makan nasi lemak guna chopstick🤣🤣
Kopitiam accually stands for coffee shop there's thousands around Malaysia.
*Does the word "tiam" literally mean "spot" or "shop"?*
I speak *Vietnamese* , where it *sounds both like* our word for *"spot"* (except we spell it as "điểm") as well as *"store/shop"* (which we spell as "tiệm").
Actually, it's Hainanese pronunciation. It's more like "kopi-diam" with the T more softer. Maybe Vietnamese had similar sounds because of the proximity to Hainan Island.
@@Suite_annamite Hi I am teochew from Singapore. Diam in my Chinese dialect means a shop

Hold up. Those dishes probably represent only like 5% of Malaysian flavours and they love it. Should we export more??
Indonesian here. Its said that in order to be able to go global, you need to focus on few specific dishes first. Example could be seen from Thais with Tom Yum & Viets with Pho. I understand that our countries similarly have rich culinary culture, but maybe we should push my nasi goreng & your nasi lemak to be known by the international general population first before proceeding with exporting the other 95%.
@@AmjaddTheGreat U r right, they barely know our country tho, let alone with the our diversity in people, culture n food

For all those butthurt with the fact *hanged to death* , she said its in the *LAW!!!!* . It doesn't matter if someone has been hanged, but the fact that it's in the law means it's a possibility to occur since legally it's fine.
