Nancy continues the Great Basics series. The book is available at www.onpoint-tv.... This time she will show how to set the nine patch on point. She loves quilts that are made on point. It makes the quilt larger and more interesting. On point means the blocks are set on the diagonal. When the quilt is on point, you have to put in setting triangles, corner triangles and setting squares.
Last time Nancy showed how to make the nine patch blocks. The last step with the nine patch block is to spray sized it. She likes to use a wool mat because it helps the block dry quickly and more flat.
Next Nancy will do some math for the setting triangles and corner triangles. Follow along with Nancy as she explains how to do it. Nancy has spray sized the fabric. Square off one side and turn it around. Nancy cuts the squares then cuts the diagonals. If you are using striped fabric, make note which direction the stripes are going when placing them in the quilt. Place a post it note for each section.
Building the quilt in halves helps to put it together easier. Pin the rows together before sewing so the seams line up. Sew and press with spray sizing. If using stripes, make sure the stripes are always going in the same direction.
Next time Nancy will do the border for the quilt.

Hi, Nancy. I’ve been quilting since 2019 and have taken several classes sewing blocks that have challenged me. I’ve learned a lot in those classes but have learned so much more watching your videos. I’ve become a better quilter but will never be perfect. Thank you so much for your instructions!
Thanks Mary!
Your attention to detailed explanations is awesome
I appreciate that!
I've just discovered your videos and am so excited! I am a self taught quilter (about 10 years now). Your instructions for setting on point squares are spot on! I just set my first on point "without" a pattern and it came out marvelously! Thank you si much! You are my "God wink" :)
You are so welcome!
I had a large flower basket print scrap so I fussy cut some pieces, intending to put them on point and then suddenly realized I had no idea how to cut setting and corner triangles without a pattern! So THANK YOU for making this video. I have been puzzling for days!
I just love the way you teach on how to do....You are the best. Very easy to learn your way. Thank you.
I appreciate that!
I have the gallon of Best Press and two bottles like you have and love them. It is the most economical way as our quilting supplies do add up.
Thank you for this series! So very helpful!!
You are so welcome!
I’m a beginner and I just found you.
OMG! You are amazing! I love how you explain everything. I learned so much today thank you!😊
You are so welcome! Thanks for the kind words!
You are such a great teacher, Nancy! I have learned so much from you! Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Thanks for the tips on cutting stripes! Very useful and I love the look.
Glad you like them!
Your videos are the best! Each step and the explanations are clear and logical. The camera work is perfect. You are a great teacher! Thank you.
Agreed!!
Thank you so much for explaining everything to us... loved your tutorial.
Most welcome 😊
You are such a good teacher. Easier to understand
Thanks!
THANK YOU for doing this video. Ive always wonder how, but couldn't figure it out. Will continue to watch your VERY INFORMATIVE videos. Your a great instructor.
Thanks for watching!
I love the stripes 💕 On point is always more interesting 🧐
Love this instructional video! Question: if using striped fabric for the triangles, does the stripe have to run horizontally? I have one that I would like to run vertically.
you can have the stripe run anyway you like :)
Excellent concise instructions!
Thanks ☺️
How cool. thanks so much
I have been busy working for the last few months, stuck in the UK during this unhappy time. I have missed my home in Spain, and am having to rely upon the integrity of my builders out there during my enforced absence. My involvement, limited to Messenger and WhatsApp!
The ‘point’ Nancy is, I had forgotten how brilliant an educator, and explainer you are. Watching this set of videos reminded me that you are the person to watch if an explanation on quilting is required. When I have a little time I will, of course, be purchasing your book. Keep safe. Many regards. Alison Eyers UK/Spain. 😀🙋🏻
Thank you so much Alison!! I hope you will home in your happy place soon - Nancy
Love how u explain please can u do more scan and cut videos
Excellent video, great teacher
Thank you! 😃
I’ve missed you, glad yo find this. Thx Nancy.
You are so welcome
well Nancy girl, i am so very glad i decided to watch this series. I've been piecing for 27 years and I have never seen the strip fabric tip. OMG I have a quilt on my design wall that i have looked at for three (3) days wondering what it needs. I'm here to tell you I am going to do this method. What a hoot, my sister will have a conniption fit when she sees it. Thanks
Very good!! Can't wait to see how it finishes up :)
Use caution with anything but water in the mister as the droplets are easily inhaled. I found inhaling the Best Press was causing breathing issues. Spray without leaning over the piece and allow ALL the mist to settle before pressing.
I know it's kinda off topic but does anybody know a good website to watch newly released series online?
Cool Stripes! Thank you!
Thanks
Love my wool mat
I have enjoyed watching your tutorials so much, you are always speaking pearls of wisdom! I love the lower fabric against the presser foot is the one with the most uptake! That is so important. Thanks so much for the details you provide. I was gifted some squares and will be following the next couple of videos so I can get this together. Thanks for sharing the math, I have booked marked this video to get back there again.
You are so welcome!
Thank you. This video is super helpful.
You're very welcome!
Excellent tutorial!!!!
Glad you liked it!
Beautiful! Definitely making this one!
Have fun!
I am looking for a gothic letter style wall hanging quilt you made some time ago..I found the lettering style and would like to try one of them. Can you help. Thank you.
I think you are looking for the Celtic Quilted Letters by HE Design. I can't see that she is still designing but you might be able to find it on Ebay. Good Luck :)
Thank you for this tutorial!!!
You are so welcome!
Thank you Nancy, very clear!
You are so welcome!
Where do you buy that mister for spraying, I looked on ebay and amazon, I don't see it. Joanne fabrics has the best press cheaper.
I bought my misting spray bottle at a beauty supply store, Sally Beauty in my area. I’ve also seen them at my local quilt shop.
@@maryking9815 I am talking the one nancy was using
Donna Richey my friend Laura has the misters in her online shop www.firesidequilts.com.
Looking fabulous 😘💐
I love the arm pin cushion, you mentioned a pattern but I can't find it on the website
Hi - It's under the "notions" portion of the shop - here's a link
www.onpoint-tv.com/product-category/notionsandtools/
A non-related question: Where can I source paper piecing patterns, the actual pattern papers? I love your New York Beauty! I've looked everywhere! Well, obviously everywhere but where I should, lol. Love your vids! Karen
Hi Karen, you can purchase my NYB pattern on our website www.onpoint-tv.com/product-category/patternsandbooks I make my patterns, paper piecing and otherwise using Electric Quilt 8, and there is tons of patterns included with that program. I am working on a new pattern/class for a Christmas wreath to come out soon :)
@@QuiltingWithNancy Thank you, Nancy! Looking forward to that Wreath!
Thank you for sharing ❤️💗❤️💖
Great tips
Nancy did you ever use he stripology rulers? Its amazing how they work.
HI Donna, I have seen these, they are basically the same as the June Taylor Shape Cut rulers that have been around forever, way before the ones from CG - i have used them but for two reasons I'm not a huge fan; 1 - it's an extra ruler, most quilters already have a basic ruler and you can do the Power Cutting with your regular ruler, no need for a special purchase and 2 - I personally do not find them as accurate - those little slots tend to move a "smidge" when you are cutting, maybe not so much that everyone notices, but I noticed so for me, I will use the rulers i already own and us the money I saved on more fabric :).
Thanks for watching and thank you for the comment!!
OnPoint-TV I was considering these. I’m new to quilting and have 3 rulers. I didn’t realise they weren’t 100% accurate so won’t be buying one, thanks for the heads up
Will the spray sizzling gum up or clog your wool mat?
Not that I have noticed.
What is the name of the rotary cutter you are using?
Olga Ergonomic.
can anyone tell me how to set appliqué on point? I want to do a Baltimore album style quilt and I would like them on pointe. Thanks
It depends on the design as to if it can be set on point - want to send me more information? QuiltingWithNancy@gmail.com
Nancy thank you for your thorough instructions, I haven’t started yet because of all my gardening, but I will be tackling it soon, thanks for sharing. 👍❤️😊
Where’s the link to getting a design board?
I'm sorry Helen, What design board? do you mean the pressing surface?
@@QuiltingWithNancy sorry, I meant the big board you were laying your quilt pieces on. You said there would be a link to getting it or to find it but I couldn’t find it! Liked the o point video very much!
I have on-point patterns that indicate that one should sew his/her blocks into rows of two, four, six, four, two (for example), and then have you sew those rows together, then rotate the quilt and square the quilt, cutting off half of each on-point block to create the square edges. I’m nervous about this, as this doesn’t have the triangles as a “border” so to speak. I don’t know if this makes any sense, I hope so, because I’d like to know more about how to piece these types of patterns. Any suggestions? Would you be willing to make a video on this topic, or is it a more advanced technique?
Hi - I think i know what you mean and will try to schedule a quick video but basically what they are telling you to do is to cut that square on the edge in half, leaving a bias cut square on the edge of the quilt - not a good idea. A bias edge is very very stitchy and although it is possible to get the borders on before it stretches all out of wack it's not easy - and this method wastes fabric. Can you send me an email with the name of the pattern and designer so i can more fully research before i do the video? quiltingwithnancy@gmail.com
Nancy do you use a round hole throat plate not the slotted one for wide sideways stitches? Sorry don’t know the proper terminology.
I broke a needle because the hole was not bigger. So dumb it cost me $100 because I tried to change the needle and it fell in the machine and I have numb hands and no way could I get it out. Lesson learned let my hubby change the needles.
HI Brenda, i use the "normal" face plate, the one with the slot. Because i move my needle to the right to get my 1/4" stitch i can't use the single hole face plate. To use the single hole face plate i would have to use the 1/4" presser foot which i have not purchased and if i can do the stitch with what i already own, I'm not one to spend money on a new foot when i could purchase more fabric with that money instead :) - Nancy
just finished a 'On Point " top and before I added the border it wasn't square .
Be sure to follow the bordering instructions to get the quilt square.
