- The Fate of Streib Abductors from B5's All Alone in the Night (episode 11, season 2). Please note this is all the relevant CGI extracted in order from the episode.
I recently started re-watching (yet again) my Babylon 5 DVD box set collection. Figured I'd do a favour to all my subscribers that did so because of the B5 content I uploaded in the past.
Although it's entertainment, we can also consider it educational for anyone studying CGI of the mid 90's.

Yes. Another good point why b5 is the best sci-fi series ever. Because why not.
Oh yeah, with the Minbari flyers too, I love teamwork. And Susan and the Agamemnon's captain weren't messing around either.
This is the first display of an omega class ships firepower. When I first watched this I wondered why no backup ships were brought considering they were fighting an advanced alien species - because they needed no reinforcements. After the very short battle I answered my own question - this is one seriously powerful ship.
Human warships might not have that much maneuverability, or artificial gravity...but they make up for it with some of the biggest damned guns and thick armor. Might not match up to any of the Older races very well, but something like the Streib or any current species, they can absolutely tank.
Love the bit where the Agamemnon doesn't even finish coming out of the hyperspace portal and is already firing its big ass main guns.
Funny enough they never show the Omega Destroyers true firepower. Those beam cannons were considered "light weapons" and the two oval rectangle shape structure in front of the ships fires Gigaton class mines which are similar to the Narn's energy mines. Also along side of the ship were rows of red squares hatches which are 72 missile silos for more long range engagement. But coolest one I think is that fighters were originally meant to launch in the rotating section of the ship and use the centrifugal force to launch them similar to the Cobra Bays in the Babylon 5 station.
Unfortunately due to limited CGI budget they couldn't show it which such a miss opportunity. Would have love to see what the Omega Destroyer can really do if they were able to show its true potential.
Delenn commented that the last Raider of the stribes was over minbari's space,unfortunadly for the stribes,the minbari's get to stribes home world AND the minbari's sure they never forget It!!!
well it's nice to see an earth ship actually destroy an enemy ship for once
No kidding.
Relentless abject defeat gets old, especially when it’s by overpowered aliens who never suffer damage even from direct hits.
EA did win the dilgar war. Doesn’t change that Earth is a middle power, Minbari easily beat them, and shadows/vorlons could easily single fight beat the minbari.
@@Cjdergrosse Far as i remember the Minbari only won because their Stealth Systems meant Earth ships had to close to literally point-blank range just to get any hits.
@@Cjdergrosse yes, said in passing and explored in expanded material. To the original commenter’s point, it’s nice to SEE an EA ship actually do something against an alien power. Only at the end of the series, when the Drahk became a punching bag for the ISA did we see any EA ship live up to its reputation as a true middle power. And by middle power, I mean one of the major younger races.
For example, despite how much the star fury is praised, can you think of visual examples of them besting alien fighter craft, with the exception of raider or centauri/Narn transports? Even in lost tales, the only shot shows a centauri fighter wiping them.
@@Cjdergrosse EA won the Dilgar war with Hyperion class ships - we've seen an Omega take out a hyperion in a single blast in Severed dreams. We've also seen an Omega one shot a white star - although sadly it was already on a collision course and took out the omega as well.
I wonder if the name "Streib" is an nod to Whitley Streiber who wrote books about Gray aliens and their abductions of humans.

It is, actually! IIRC Stracynzski mentioned that in canon the Streibs were named for Whit!

You didn't put in Ivanova's reactions to the Streib spacing their captives. She said "Those arrogant sons of.... TAKE THEM DOWN!" in an angry tone.
Sorry, but that part was live action and I'm only posting CGI.
That is the best part of the whole interaction.

@@FurdemonLar Because, I guess, copyright law does not apply to CGI. Way to stay on the side of the angels. Also, of course, your critique clearly puts this into the realm of fair use.

If you mean the scene at 2:46. These aren't stribes. These are all the prisoners the Stribe took. During the battle, the Stribe are asked to surrender and release all those they have kidnapped. Instead, they push all the prisoners into space. In response, Cmdr. Ivanova also orders the ship to be destroyed, which the Earth Destroyer then does.

The spacing of the captives was just asking for the EAS Agamemnon and its fighter escorts to kill the Streib. The Minbari seem to be quite satisfied that the humans took out the Streib and turned their ship into scrap metal. I guess the Streib made enemies of the Minbari too in the past? Why get Minbari hands dirty when another race can do the hit for you? The Minbari can say the humans were justified in exacting retribution for the Streib killing the hostages. The Streibs were probably one of the Shadows lackeys anyway?
They raided Minbari space in the past, and the Minbari pursued them back to their homeworld, much as Earth did here.
Yeah, Delenn said that the Streib had raided the Minbarri in the past.
"We tracked them back to their home planet and made sure they understood the depth of their mistake."
Considering what the Minbarri did to Earth after an actual understandable misunderstanding, you can only imagine what they did to the Streib.
@@gatedude07 The Minbari did not kill off the Streib, as their planet and one of their ships exist. It is like the Minbari are teaching the Humans how to ass kick other aliens who do bad things to you. The Minbari are the masters and the Humans are the apprentices. Oh, wait, that is Star Wars, not Babylon 5. I got the wrong franchise. The Steib may have PTSD from being beaten up by Minbari and Humans? Minbari only fear the Shadows, Humans fear Minbari, and the Streib fear Minbari, Human, and anyone else who beat them up too.
They were a technician/scientist race of the Shadows
@@gatedude07 I like to think that the Minbari laid waste to the Streib homeworld after wiping out their military forces and all orbital structures but refrained from wiping them out completely and told them "Next time you anger us, we'll make your race extinct!" before leaving.
Never see an X-wing flip around like a Starfury.
Science guys often say the Starfury is the best design of a space fighter to date.
@@harryc1971 We could build something like it with modern tech, but it's fuel range would be pretty bad until we get better tech.
@@danielboatright8887 unless you use ion drives like satellite systems use. Specially with a carrier ship for maintenance and reloads/refuel
The X-wing, as cool it looks, is actually a rather crappy design. Four engines but not in a position that would really help with manuvering much. Spread out guns that make sure you either need to compensate with using them as turrets or they don`t actually hit whats exactly in front of them, and useless wings that do nothing.
Its not unlike the design for The Last Starfighter?
I never recall seeing this episode. 2:48 is very disturbing... Didn't see the rescue of that fighter pod..
Not shown in the video, but the Streib spacing their captives was the stupid move that resulted in an enraged Ivanova calling for the Agamemnon to take out the Streib ship, which they happily did as you can see.

The Streib ship may have been designed for hit-and-fade kidnap ops but was definitely out of its league in a straight-up fight!!
Which is pretty telling for this species' ability to learn given the Minbari already curbstomped them the last time they ventured out of their space. It's how the EA knew where to find them.
I do wonder though why the Streib didn't send any other ships to save their abductor ship?
@@girlgarde Given that they weren't expecting to be hit, they likely didn't have heavy combat assets near enough to save their ship.
@@girlgarde - They might have done that in the past when they tried abducting Minbari. It likely ended with them losing a lot a ships. Since this was an Earthforce destroyer accompanied by a wing of starfuries, this was clearly an "official" response and not just some random folks trying to pull off a rescue on their own. The Streib likely considered that even if they called in more ships, so would Earthforce. Remember, the whole reason they do this is to see how easy to conquer a species might be. Based on Earthforce's response, the result of the experiment was probably that Humans aren't that different than Minbari when it comes to these situations and it's better for the Streib to keep their heads down rather than start a war.

Very bizarre design on that Streib ship.
They may be able to pick on little fighters. But an Earth heavy cruiser? They're way out of their weight class!
Specifically, a cruiser designed with lessons from the Earth-Minbari war in mind.

01:53 Is this the only time we see a ship coming out of hyperspace through an "entrance vortex"? I wonder if this was just a CGI department goof or if those vortices are actually bidirectional.
Probably a goof. You don't see any ship lined up to go into that jump point.

Why do I tend to remember the B5 episodes more than Star Trek?
More believable maybe? More down to earth? Maybe a bit more realistic?
Those are my reasons, B5 showed humanity at it's worst AND best but more believable. Star trek tended to remain more optimistic and didn't really show humans at their worst.

@@Darkwintre That would be a very good point on including DS9 into it except.....it's a known fact that Ds9 was a rip off of B5.

How would the Streib stand up against a Shadow Battlecrab? Or would they even try?
It always irritated me how stupid and weak the Human forces were. Send in forces right away.
