JMS is a decorated veteran of television production hell. B5 was almost cancelled multiple times during the original five year run, and he always found ways of keeping it alive and running.

Gosh, I remember way back in what must be early 1994 loving Babylon 5.
I was an avid Amiga gamer too so loved the fact that all it's revolutionary CGI was done on an Amiga with a Video Toaster.
I especially loved that the squadron of attack fighters didn't 'bank on invisible space air' and instead used thrusters to alter their course.
It would be fascinating to see a reboot.

That’s one thing that always lives with me - the spaceship mechanics were _realistic!_ The design of the Starfury (putting the pilot upright and at the centre of the craft) is still inspired. And having them drop out of Cobra Bays, using what is essentially a fuel-free radial launching system.

"Reimagined" is a warning word when it comes to current day media.
Besides that it is generally the lazy way.

Agreed, the original is my all time favorite scifi series. When it comes to re-imagining I hope they do something like what happened in the scifi series Andromeda, though technically not a re-imagining they still altered a lot of the series between season three and four.

    • @knghtbrd

The usual way they do fuck it up is with cardboard cutouts of "strong female characters" who are not two of those three things. Joe knows how to write strong women, and although he has written a few weak ones, he doesn't like them much because they're not interesting characters.
If Joe Straczynski is making the reboot of his own universe, I will trust him to do it well unless or until he shows me that he didn't. Not every idea he has is amazing-the B5 spinoff movies for TNT were hit and miss, and Legend of the Rangers was not great either. But I will still trust the Great Maker has plans if he intends to reshape the universe. Faith manages.

I was a superfan, eventually writing licensed products. That said, I view a reboot with nothing but trepidation, in this day and age. I fear the odds of a good result are slim, since JMS was held back from some of his intentions, unlikely to happen now. If anything, his wilder ideas would be pushed as not far enough. I fear the show runners know far less about how things work nowadays, actors are not as believable as responsible adults, and JMS will be forced to let modern writers do more of the work.
JMS said he saw the whole story in a moment of clarity, and I kept saying that the farther he got from that moment, the worse his ideas held together.

Don't do a reboot, you can't replace some of the original actors and the roles they made to perfection. Lets just create a new story that takes place after sheridan dies and grow from there. That would be much better and keep the original intact.

I would rather a new idea. Could jms do a story about a colony ship in a universe with no hyperspace maybe on a 1000 year journey and maybe no aliens, at least at the start. I think people like a mix of weekly A plot, story arc and some light relief plots. Maybe also put the latest science into the story.

I'm on the fence with this one. If it were just a reboot, I'd say hard no. However, with JMS still at the helm the way he was with the original series back in the 90s, I'm willing to test the waters (though I would like to see cameos from the remaining original cast). Barring this, I would _really_ like to see a remastered version of the original with updated CGI.
This was one of my favorite shows growing up. The story line was complex and often took us in unexpected directions, the characters were extremely well written and fleshed out, and they tackled moral problems in realistic ways (particularly Mr. Garibaldi's recovery from alcohol addiction, which actor Jerry Doyle tacked in real life; as well as Garibaldi using his recovery to help his friend Dr. Franklin with drug addiction).

I'm in need of some good space sci-fi. The current Star Treks aren't satisfying, so I hope this works out since I enjoyed watching B5. The reboot better be a solid production all around because The Expanse has set the bar high, and JMS has got Warner behind him.

  • @CentralNexusPrime
    @CentralNexusPrime 5 месяцев назад

I am concerned. B5 worked the first time because of the story arc. That includes several surprises. Truth remains hidden until key scenes in certain episodes. They worked around actors coming and going. A remake would require new replacement twists and plots.
Granted technology has advanced fast. Handheld high resolution video devices could have been problematic in a police state. I’d like to the story grow to encompass new technology based on current technologies that should be available 150+ years from now. Back when the show was first launched the internet was young. Would a galactic internet work?

If it weren't for JMS being there I probably wouldn't be paying any attention to this whatsoever, but since he created it, it's his to play with in any way he wants. Hell, tell us MORE STORIES in that universe, but reboot the show without Peter Jurasik, Andreas Katsulas, Bruce Boxleitner, Mia Furlan, Walter Koenig etc. (sure, some of the cast are still alive, but too old to actually get back to their roles)? NO! Please! I am afraid. I am very very afraid. To me, the original B5 was perfection. Well written, visually stunning, great stories and sub-plots. And the characters? Perfection. But in 2034/2024? In the age of Woke? DEI? All the nonsense out there in the world that tends to ruin things? What are we going to get? What kind of craziness will the studios introduce into the B5 universe? And am I the only one out there who thinks that just because you can do a thing, you should do a thing? Can't we just leave B5 alone? Unmolested? Not ruined? I guess if JMS in kept involved, things might turn out alright. But in this day and age, with the poor caliber of people running things, I don't hold out a lot of hope.

Woke, diverse, and inclusive science fiction? Is such a thing even possible? Yes, and I’ll bet you love it, despite your protestations.
Star Trek (The Original Series) had an Asian, an African (and a female one at that!), a Russian, and a half-alien on the bridge serving in important roles.
Star Trek: The Next Generation had a handicapped (blind) African-American steering the spaceship, a robot, a grumpy Klingon, and another half-alien on the bridge. And the captain was *gasp* bald! Scandal! And he was played by a European actor! That’s so unAmerican!
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine had a *double gasp* African-American commander! A lady first officer! The doctor is Indian (and played by an actor with a Middle Eastern name)! Will the war on White Males never end?!
Did I fail to mention that your beloved un-woke and un-DEI Babylon 5 had a budding romance between Ivanova and Talia? A woman Pope? Franklin and Marcus posing as a newlywed couple on their honeymoon?
Sorry, bro. You don’t need to worry about “the woke” taking over Babylon 5, or Commie-Nazi DEI indoctrinating a generation of sci-fi viewers. It’s already happened. It happened a long time ago. Babylon 5 is not the poster child of the White American Male way of life; it’s the opposite. Like all good sci-fi, Babylon 5 shows us our future, and the future is made of infinite diversity in infinite combinations.

@@brimstonewinpete9306 Actually, that would be the Babylon 4 story with Jeffrey Sinclair as the Minbari not of Minbari. If you watched the series through and through, you know what I mean by that saying. One, it doesn't retread the past (other than the incidental connection to the original series with Jeffrey Sinclair but goes into what happened in the first shadow war. So it is a reboot and then WHAT happened to BABYLON 4 since the Shadow War. That can be a whole series into itself including the interstellar politics THEN! Which I would not be surprised is not all too different than politics on earth and during Babylon 5's time. Surprising history isn't all that different than today and likely even in the future in a time like Babylon 5.

Babylon 5 is and always will be the most important piece of fiction in my life. It has inspired me throughout my life and helped me overcome terrible situations. Babylon 5 means the world to me. So believe me when I say I want this new version to succeed in honoring its predecessor. I'd be extremely skeptical if this new series was being created and produced by a whole new team. However, JMS himself is the one attempting to bring it to our screens! He is an excellent writer with the best understanding of his previous work. Additionally, he's had much more experience with writing and producing since B5 ended. He is yearning to use all of his talents to tell a new, wonderful story that will pay tribute to the original. I think this is amazing! All the folks saying for them to "leave B5 alone" and "not to ruin it" don't understand one simple, basic truth: the original series will always be there. You can always go back and watch it, rewatch it, hang out with Garibaldi, enjoy the frenemy bond/rivalry of G'Kar and Londo, and have your heart broken by the best series finale ever to air with Sleeping in Light. Those episodes and the original movies will always be there. If the new reboot stinks, trust me when I say I'll be going back there! However, JMS brought B5 into existence once. It was wonderful! However, as much as I love B5 it was also plagued by production issues and cancellation issues. The original plan for the Shadow/Earth Alliance conflicts had to be rushed due to a near certain cancellation. Then when they got picked up for a final season JMS had to adapt. Don't get me wrong, some of the very best episodes are from Season 5. Unfortunately, so are some of the worst. JMS wants to do right by his life's work and bring a new version of B5 to modern audiences. And I think that's great! The show was there for me when I needed it in some rather terrible times. I think we owe it to him to trust his vision. We also owe it to potential new viewers to be supportive of JMS' attempts to bring B5 forward for them. It helped me and continues to inspire me in almost every aspect of my life. People need good role models, positive stories about what's right, what's wrong, and how to deal with adversity. I trust JMS. He won't let us down. I, too, am cynical concerning recent productions and the terrible writing of some of those programs. But this is JMS himself bringing it to us. He'll do a fantastic job. And while I'm not religious myself, sometimes "faith manages." Be hopeful. Don't let the world grind you down to a point where you can't even give the creator of Babylon 5 a chance to bring it back. For goodness sake, with everything going on in the world now, dammit, we need Babylon 5 more than ever.

That's a statement I can sign. He'll do right by the source material or he'll walk away. He has proven he will do so by burying Crusade after corporate meddling. So on this front, I have absolutely no concerns.
And for the people complaining about 'woke culture in Hollywood nowadays': Have you taken a good, close look at the cast and roles in clasic B5? They were what we nowadays call 'woke' back in the 90s already. Only that it's not served with a sledgehammer to the forehead. And again: As JMS has proven he can do this in the original series, I'll be damned if he forgotte how to do that in this day and age.
So best leave the man be in regards of demands, wishes and propositions for the reboot. It's his baby, he knows best how to do justice by the source material while showing off how he has developed as a writer over the last quarter of a century.

I wonder if his roll continues to exist, just never as the commander of B5. I can see the Mimbari after recognizing the 'life fource' of Valen in him and the legend that Valen himself gave the Mimbari of the Rangers, that the Mimbari may have directly worked with him to develop the Rangers.
I'd also like to see more involvement of the Technomages myself. It was kind of a 'weekly Savior type thing' on Excalibur, but I can see Galen being introduced earlier, and having several intersecting arcs with the main story of B5 station. No he's no where near as important of a character as Sinclair in the roll he had, but I've a long suspicion that there were a lot of people who enjoyed the Galen character from the perspective of seeing competent technology people as various types of Wizards at the time. That said, what counts as 'competent' these days mostly amounts to 'they have a bunch of paper that says they can do this stuff, but 3 years of work in related fields for experience." vs. people who spend their lives building their fundamental understanding of the field, and demonstrating that knowledge and understanding, in what they do, with little ceremony. Besides, I liked how the technomage arrived at one meeting, was advised that spy devices were forbidden, and blew apart one or more of Londo's monitoring devices in the room. Just me perhaps.

I would have preferred Sinclair for the reboot, it would have given more legitimacy to it not just being a pale imitation of the original. With that I am kinda worried that they might go the same way as Strange New Worlds did with Kirk.
I'm thinking that the best option might be to have Sinclare replace Warren Keffer in the original series and add Commander Sinclair as the Starfury Wing Commander and give him a unique dynamic with the Station X.O. Lt. Commander Ivonava that can still recieve het promotion mid series. This could also lead to a cheesy plot point for an episode where Sheridan is missing and Sinclare and Ivonava butt heads because of a difference of opinion on how to proceed with the Search and rescue. They can still have Sinclare there at Menbari request and maybe even as the station commander for part of the pilot to be relieved by Sheridan. they could even play up the dynamic of Sinclair not being Earthforce's first choice as the reaso for the last second substitution. But that is just one possible thought on the topic.

JMS’ talking about not wanting to retread but still going with a reboot is kind of a joke. You want to go over new ground? Move the timeline forward 30-40 years and have us follow the son of Sheridan and Delenn. Do it in a way where the original show is barely referenced and re-introduce this universe for a new audience.
The reality is everything JMS did post season 4 m, B5 and not B5 has been pretty mediocre. The man had one GREAT story in him, and he burned himself out doing it. I simply do not believe that lightning will strike twice. The original will always be there on blu ray thankfully.

Rewatching B5 as enjoying three reaction channels doing a first watches. The show was great until the cancellation messed with the 4th season. Not to mention with 5th season the new network sticking their finger in to stir things up beyond the distraction created by the cancellation. Then the network killed Crusade because they didn't understand the audience. However some of the things JMS has done and said over time causes me some concern in today's environment. I fear whatever network picks up the tab will have their own agenda which JMS may be too inclined to support. Just hope it doesn't diminish the original like several other re-make / re-imaginings have done to other classic shows. Unfortunately it will probably be on a pay streaming service which I will not subscribe to.

Most of the streamers are losing money, and the studios keep making more shallow crap for "Modern Audiences". I hears a while ago that of the 200 (or more) series on TV, cable, and streaming only about 20 have any appreciable audience. The other thing I heard is that after these "popular" series end almost nobody watches them later, while reruns of Friends and other things made in the 90s, 80s, and older, end up having larger audiences which keep watching them. I suspect a B5 reboot will have a president Clark as a Trump lookalike, assuming Trump wins the election, and any timeless entertainment and philosophical value of this series will be sacrificed to make current political and cultural points, thus making the series dated and dull within 5 years.

I think that a reboot will just have people comparing and complaining about the alternate versions of existing characters , and will dramatically draw away from the revisioning. There was room to examine the remainder of the Crusade story line at the very least in a continuation, but who knows.

Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting in moments of transition... to be born in moments of revelation.
