- Diesel Power Challenge 2017 Presented by XDP’s nine reader-selected contenders compete against 2016 champ Charlie Keeter, in an event designed to assess each driver’s skill. On the obstacle course, the spotlight shifts from a truck’s go-fast prowess to the driver’s ability to navigate a coned-off, CDL-style training circuit while maneuvering with a 10,000-pound tractor-carrying trailer in tow. Completing the course with the quickest time can help a driver inch closer to claiming the overall DPC title.
Starting October 9th, 2017, 2017, host Brian Lohnes takes you through our weeklong torture test that features 6 competitive events, 10 trucks, and 23,172.2 combined horsepower and torque at the rear wheels. We push Cummins-, Duramax-, and Power Stroke-powered trucks well beyond their limits in this search for the ultimate street-legal diesel truck and driver.

Jm4c93 I love this segment, true truck skills. although the trailer for the sled pull has me excited to see it! To be fair though, driving an 11 sec qtr mile in a truck is fairly skilled., and launching with that trailer on the dragstrip... At least when the wheels spin or torque twists the truck towards the wall, or should I say it's not as "brain dead" as some of these comments make it seem.

backed up semis in narrow loading bays in the past. Mirrors only. Perfectly boxed in. At the time, my truck license was just 7 months old. Nowadays, i laugh my ass off at dudes struggling to park their camping trailers WITH THREE GUYS HELPING BY THE SHOUTS
What I like about using mirrors only is that you can keep a trailer straight by simply turning your steering wheel to the mirror that shows the trailer breaking out.

a diesel dually ford,chevy&dodge ..each fully loaded, each with a trailer fully loaded. timed race to top of mtn.

This is the best part of the DPC, it separates the guys who actually know how to drive and deserve to be there from the guys who just have a bunch of money to throw at their truck and think they're cool.
Error at 10:11, his time was 2:30.74 but announcer said 2:38.74 because the 0 that they use in the text has a slash through it.

You can't back a trailer by using mirrors then you shouldn't be pulling a trailer.
This should be part of the class c license test. It would eliminate 95% of drivers but the ones that did pass you could say they are competent enough. Seriously though. Just go to the boat ramp at salmon season and bring some snacks cuz it’s like a highlight real of people in big trucks and expensive boats that literally can’t drive either of them. It’s hilarious.
lets buy a big ass dually just to show that we cant back up a simple 16ft trailer

Really how different would the car drive without that bobcat on the trailer. It doesn't effect backing up.
The bobcat doesn't affect how you reverse? Have you ever driven with a load on a trailer? It certainly does make the trailer behave differently. Not by much but it makes a difference.
Especially on a trailer like that. Weight really affects a bumper pull trailer. Goose necks, not so much.

They did actually, after every event this year they tested duallys from every manufacturer. Watched the live stream months ago 😂. I'm sure it'll be a different set of videos later.
you can have two different classes
its not all about power or the width of your wheel base. its all balance and driver controls.
Would have loved to see the ‘95 Dodge run in this, I guess the engine was cooked... It could have done very well being a smaller single cab truck...
I'm a die hard ford fan and love powerstrokes, but its kind of ashame there is no competition from duramax in diesel power challenge. Literally every year it seems like there is only one duramax, and it either does horrible (like this year) or it breaks. I know there has gotta be some duramax guys out there that can compete with powerstroke and cummins in this competition.

This is always a good competition for DPX. Backing a trailer is a whole different animal than drag racing or sled pulling. It's kinda fun to see everyone's technique for backing through the cones, but at the end of the competition, you can tell whose don't it before and who hasn't.
Seeing these guys in there big jacked up trucks, some of them struggle to back up a trailer. So good!

Why does motor trend half ass this series so much? This is such a cool competition yet they somehow make these videos boring as hell and cant even give the video enough info.
Will they show the part where they tailgate the shit outta some chick in her Honda Civic going to school.
Or the people on scooters/motorcycles going through gravel construction zones.

If you can't drive/back a trailer and you drive a truck like this... you shouldn't be driving one. Also... If you can't do it with your mirrors, you can't do it.
They should be penalized for not using their mirrors.

Seriously though, my buddy has a near impossible corner into his backyard without a trailer, let alone with a 20’ gooseneck. I’ve seen better driving by my drunk 85 year old grandpa in a campsite trailer park with little to no room.

I learned at 14 how to drive a trailer, at 27 now I know for a fact I can whip a trailer better than everyone in this video. I drive a trailer everyday of the week, and heavy loads on the weekends. That these dudes would probably lose control of 😂😂 only dude who did good was the 5.9 4 door

Growing up in a small town with farms all over watching these guys fail to do what their trucks were designed to do is truly hilarious. Or maybe because all the old farmers around here back up 20-30 ft trailers in there sleep.

I'd try it with my stock "87 Dakota V6 gasser! I have a 4X6 for a bumper and a harbor freight hitch, what could go wrong?!?
its backing up and turning corners, any stock diesel could do the pretty much the same times, its all about the driver
Jackson Bennett sounds good ill meet you there with my four banger 97 Dakota and you can watch me tow the trailer a couple feet off the bumper then violently rip off the bumper.
A stock truck would do better in this event, the massive turbos on these trucks don't get a chance spool doing this! A stock truck with a small turbo would have much better low rpm grunt due to the quicker spool and so would be better in these short slow maneuvers
In this particular challenge yes. And it showed by how some of the very high torque trucks got their ass whooped by a guy who knew how to back up a trailer.
However a 10.000lbs trailer drag race is something else entirely
I would love to come do this I'd even use my 1996 f150 with a 300 i6 I have a 16 f250 with a 6.7 but my 96 is a single a cab so it turns way better but it wouldn't like that 10k

By the way this is cool. This is what these trucks are designed for. Kinda. If you own a Cummins and don’t have a trailer well. That # should be zero unless you got the truck first so you could go buy your trailer haha

You should have seen my brother in law back in his tent trailer lol ! He had to get my 80 year old Dad to back it in,and he did in 1 shot and no problems..I would have backed it in,but I was laughing so hard,my eyes teared up and my contact fell out lol...It was one of the funniest 15 minutes of our lives !!
We were looking out the house bay window and just dumbfounded on what the guy was doing !! short box F 150 and a small tent trailer he couldnt back it in the wide driveway and 1/4 acre lot !! No cars to bother him,double wide driveway and straight !!!!! LOL !
Scary thing is now he has a Dodge Ram 2500 with a 5th wheel and lol he smashed out his cab window not only once, but twice in 3 months ! And the 3rd time he took it out lol ! He also smashed the rear 1/4 side of the trailer and bent the trailers wheel,just a complete idiot..he needs a self driving car lol !

Diesel Patriot 1776 That may be so, but if that's the case it's a terribly bad rule. Who wants to win by default because the best truck is ineligible to compete? Just think, Michael Jordan would have never won three back-to-back-to-back NBA titles if there was a dumb rule like that. I heard Miller was unable to comply with Diesel Power Challenge rules regarding emissions equipment being deleted, not a repeat winner ban... I don't know?
I wonder if an older truck that can use low range without engaging 4wd drive would do better here.

I love diesels, but I hate seeing those clouds of black soot. I have been to countries where this only happens because the country is too poor and corrupt to afford new public transit. It's disgraceful and unnecessary with today's technology.
I love watching these but the announcer just strikes a nerve with me. “Oh he’s clean doing great” Just before they take out 3 cones. “He’s dead center” When obviously he’s over to the left. My god just shut up and let me watch.
