  • Here's probably the oldest vacuum cleaner I've unboxed on my channel so far, a Hoover 612 from the 1950s I believe. This machine is in pretty good shape for its age, but it has a few issues which I will hopefully sort soon. I will demonstrate this cleaner as soon as it is fully working.
    The video also features a sneak peek at my latest vacuum cleaner, the new Dyson Light Ball upright.

    My father bought this model from an estate sale in Toronto back in the early 1980's. Apparently the old lady that owned it bought it brand new in either 1947 or '48. My father used it as a commercial vacuum for years for his cleaning business, then years later I acquired the Hoover 60 for my own cleaning business. But eventually I got rid of it. Although the motor seemed to be working fine, it just wouldn't pick anything up anymore. I figured the brush roll was the problem. The brushes were so worn down, they wouldn't even touch the carpet. I searched EVERYWHERE to find a replacement brush roll, but was unsuccessful at finding one. Same with the original bag. It got so thin and worn out after years of use, and AGAIN, after an exhausting search, I couldn't find a bag to fit that old model. It was a very specific fitting for that bag on that model and there just weren't any around. Also, keep in mind that this was in the VERY early 2000's, so looking for replacement parts for the Hoover 60 on Ebay wasn't really a reality yet at that time. My best chance at finding parts for that vacuum (at that time) was to contact actual vacuum stores and Hoover dealers (which I did,) and none of them had any brush rolls or bags to fit that vacuum... so I reluctantly junked it.

    I’ve got a 612 just the same, complete with its tool kit and it’s original brown matching bag and still working fine. They were made to last.

    The 612 is practically bomb proof and an excellent performer on carpets when working properly .The grey bag is from the commercial version of this machine .The bag has been fitted to the bag flange the wrong way round .Nice machine to use with its spring loaded suspension at the back

    This was my childhood vacuum cleaner. My grandmother bought it new in the 1950's. Then in the late 1960's gave it to my mom. I remember fixing the bottom of it when it came loose. It was a similar US model.

    Based on the fact the brushes are screwed in,it is the same style that would be original. Might have been replaced 20-30 years later but it's definitely the right brush roll.

    It's a treat to see a pre-1960s Hoover upright on ibasaic. It would also be nice to see you review a Hoover 119 from the 40s.

      Also I love the original Hoover vacuums before 1938. Those machines rocked!

    This vacuum was known as the Hoover Model 60 and it was originally released in the USA in 1940. It took 9 years for it to appear in the UK (1949), in which it was renamed the Hoover 612. This is how to tell if the owner of the vacuum is from USA or England. :-)
    Also, the reason the basket was in there was to act as a brace to protect the vacuum slightly if the box should get smashed and to keep the handle from busting a hole through the package. I just bought a vacuum and the seller did the same thing but used small cardboard boxes.
    Also, be very careful with old cords. Not at all saying old cords are bad, it's just that you cannot see if the fiber and paper insulation has rotted inside and allowed the wires to cross each other. Had an old auto work light that had been in my garage for 40 years unused. I plugged it in, no power. Before I could reach to unplug it, the entire cord exploded in my hand and caught fire. The wires had crossed over inside the cord and created a dead short. There was globs of molten rubber insulation all over the wall, the cord insulation was on fire, and the cardboard insulator on the end of the plug caught fire and was burning on the socket. I never got electrocuted because I was properly insulated (rubber sneakers and rubber contractor gloves) but I dropped it immediately and cut the power at the breaker panel and dumped sand on the fire. Not a bad fire, only as big as what you would have on a candle.

    I still have and use a 612 with tools also a 119 Junior which is an early model with Red name plate. I think still so simply to use, one foot pedal only.

    This Hoover 612, originally released in the USA in 1940, took 9 years to appear in the UK.The vacuum cleaner was styled by .the designer Henry Dreyfuss who abandoned the fragile looking teardrop design of the 262 for something way more substantial looking. Magnificent styling with gold hammered finish and featured a "dirtsearcher" headlight which extended the full width of the stylish bakelite hood.

      Henry Dreyfuss also designed the Western Electric 302 telephone.Also known as the "Lucy" phone because of its constant appearance on "I Love Lucy".....Ha

    These Hoover 612 are actually far superior in materials and design function than the ultra expensive American Kirby's.

    That's going to be a great machine. I use to have a friend who had a similar thought later one from the mid sixties, in fact the same one that Rusty just started restoring. They were as you know still metal based with the baker lite hoods and were exceptionally robust. The Dyson did a very nice job and quickly. The Hoover of course will be slower but it will really shake a rug and a darn sight more than the Dyson did.

    Those old machines are pretty cool to take apart and rebuild. I was surprised at the sound it wasn't very loud and sounded quite healthy. Looking forward to seeing the "after" video once you get a chance to go through it properly.

    Very nice! RE the lower handle bolt, I think the one I sent you will work, however I should have plenty of spares, because this takes the opposite of the one you needed (square peg under the head on the thin end). I'll have to dig my 612 out of it's hole and check! If it is I'll send you some over! The Agitator looks legit, and probably quite clean underneath, but judging by how stiffly it spun without a belt youll need new bearings in it, and underneath the end caps will be full of thread! Yours is a million times better than mine! I've got mine half filmed up, need to finish it off and get it uploaded, might do that over winter! The motor sounds fantastic though, drop of oil here and there will have it running like new! I'd love you to do a vs video with your usual thorough professionalism when the 612 is running right, would be fantastic to see!

    • @ibaisaic
      @ibaisaic  6 лет назад +2

      I will check that one of the black bolts you sent will fit. I am surprised that the agitator is genuine as it looks too good. I haven't taken the end caps off yet, but once it's all cleaned and oiled I think it will be OK. I have a replacement bag flange on the way, so all I need is a new bulb.

    • @ibaisaic
      @ibaisaic  6 лет назад

      Do you think the height adjustment is OK, because it didn't seem to do much.

    • @beko1987
      @beko1987 6 лет назад

      To be honest I can't say I know much about the height adjustment on these... Not got that far with mine! If it's like the 262 I think you push down on the handle, which moves the whole back wheel assembly then do something else... Mines about 20 minutes away at the back of the shed, so I have no chance of having a quick look, Amy won't let it in the house at the moment!

    • @beko1987
      @beko1987 6 лет назад

      Hang on, I'm being simple again! I'll take some smudges of the manual and send them over!

    • @ibaisaic
      @ibaisaic  6 лет назад

      I'll have another look at mine shortly. I have the belts but I can't really try it out until I get the replacement bag flange. In the meantime I will give the agitator a good clean and vac out the bag so it's ready for its first test.

      ibaisaic sounds good, its such a shame most modern vacuum cleaners aren't built to last like these where, some of these are in their 70's and 80's now and still run nicely. Can't see many modern one lasting so long. As much as i love our Dyson DC40, can't see it still running in 30 years time no matter how much i look after it.

      Like the colours in the video there were some Australian models that had a gold colour on the lower handle as the shipping container sunk and were recovered and rebuilt and painted and sold as new
      The ship name was kikoriki or similar

    the bag is on the wrong way round .thats why it wont fit .Turn the bag round so that the logo is facing the front

    • @ibaisaic
      @ibaisaic  6 лет назад

      If you watched the video, I mention about the bag probably being the wrong way round, but that was not why it would not fit on the cleaner. The metal bag flange had a broken part which prevemted it from fitting under the securing latch. I have since fitted a replacement flange and the bag now fits, even if I have the wording at the back.
