Identity theft: How criminals use a low-interest credit card scam to steal from you (Marketplace)

  • It starts with what sounds like a promising phone call: For a one-time fee, you can lower the interest rate on your credit card. But the person on the other end of the line isn't with your bank or credit card company - and what that person is really after is your identity.
We obtain a database of names of people who have had their identities stolen through this scam, and inform them about the breach. And we talk to experts and a former fraudster who tell us how you can protect your personal information, including testing whether Equifax and TransUnion are doing enough to protect you.

I work for a major bank. A credit freeze wont help but make it harder on great regular clients.
There will always been easier/lack lenders. Where there is a will there is a way that remains true for fraudster. They will simply remove the freeze or borrow debt around it.
Best practice be conscious were you share your information. Fraud alerts can help avoid major issues. Credit monitering is reactive since it informs you when its happened so you know after an application. Alerts force full applications to check with you at your contact #.
Makes me laugh they did not mention the effectiveness of the alerts. They also failed to mention if they were able to obtain any card. Does not sound like it since I am certain we would have heard it.
My bank requires a person to visit in person with picture ID plus declines if the applications is not similar to the recent information.

So rather than only asking the politician, you should have also asked Equifax and Transunion why they don't offer that type of service to Canadians when they do for Americans.

@@LycanWitch I think the majority of the profit Equifax ect make are from fees they charge creditors.
When a potential creditor (banks ect) runs your credit, they have to pay the credit agency a fee. I suspect that if the credit is frozen, the creditor does not have to pay a fee. Frozen credit certainly disrupts the credit business so the credit agencies don't like it.
Equifax actually lobbies the Canadian govt to not have to freeze credit. I dont think they would do that if they could make more money freezing it.

I sent CBC an article regarding the schemes of business Equifax has been operating on and they never continued the investigation. Equifax and Transunion don't care about consumers, they care to sell your information!
In Canada, there is no FCRA (Fair Credit Reporting Act) the way it is in the United States.
Credit Report freeze is a thing in the US and creditors would have to ask consumers to unblock or to give the access code.
Just a quick comparison, even though the US uses their Social Security Number as a de facto national ID (not the case in Canada) their protection against these schemes are on much higher level of security than what being offered in Canada.
    Some further details:
    1. credit/consumer reporting agency (including US Experian and CHEX) will be held liable for anything like this and/or fraudulent activities.
    2. creditors who obtained consumer reports have to notify of any decision and/or info being used against customer.
    3. Please look above, Canadians aren't being protected and the government does not enforce such an act.

When I lived in Mexico, the bank I dealt with always sent a text message onto my phone every time I made any type of a transaction indicating the amounts being moved too. It was set up automatically. This way I could have found out right away if anyone ever got a hold of my debit card's pin number or anything about it at all. I loved it. This type of service would be just as effective if businesses would send a text to our phones asking if any of us just agreed to open this and that or refinance a mortgage, about to buy a car, whatever. The text would have to be confirmed with a yes or a no before the business would proceed with the whatever transaction.

This is an insider operation between staffs working in the banks and financial institutions and the fraudsters. The first step to put a stop to this is to thoroughly investigate the background of the people they hire. Second is to minimize the or secure certain information of customers to some of these suspicious staffs.

    • @PhyllisGlassup2TheBrim

Fraud alert only works if the credit follows the proper procedures. You are supposed to contact the individual using the phone number they provided on the alert. The person must confirm they applied for the credit prior to approving the application. It only works if the creditor follows the procedure for clearing fraud alerts. There is nothing preventing them from just approving the application without calling you first.

to be honest, every single episode produced by this TV anchor is a dark sign for the Marketplace show. Nothing's against you but your contents should have been less biased and less misleading. One of those example:
    - Why not available in Ontario (just a province?) - it's simply not available all across CANADA as you said. You also acknowledged the availability from the USA (which again, a federal regulation)
    - You mentioned 2xcredit alerts etc. etc. then "credit card only checks on 1 credit bureau etc. etc." you made the bank look bad and lazy for the fact they only checked one type of report. If you ever work in loans, you'd know why, especially there's a fee to obtain these reports from a business perspective. These information isn't available generally as consumers are quite clueless about credit reporting anyhow.
    - You asked the government, you never mentioned the most important aspect of credit reporting that the government is able to mandate: the access and use of credit report. Credit reporting is being overused in Canada as employment screening, don't forget these employment screening is generally done by a third party vendor and once these are obtained, it's also causing more and more concern of privacy issue (of course, identity theft)
Just some 2c here, if you guys wanna read up and pass it around. Cheers.
