- 1960 - 26 year old Jessica Avet opens a stack of 20 letters from her father, J Francis Avet, addressed to her before he was drafted in 1940. Francis left his 6 year old daughter knowing he might not ever return, so wrote with the intension for Jess to read a letter on her birthday every year for 20 years. Jess never read a single one, until her 26th birthday.

It's sadder to realize that the father is trying to get her to do the dance she does at the end when she was a kid with him one last time before he left. She's upset and doesn't do it, and by the time she does he's already gone. She can only dance without him now.

what I understand from this story...: he got drafted into the army and left his 10 year old daughter on her birthday. She was so heartbroken and hurt by him leaving her, she couldn't open the letter/birthday card he left her.... until she was older. She felt regret and restless from not reading it earlier and now she lost him, unable to thank him..
I don't know how close I am, but that's my outlook on it... beautiful storyline nonetheless. these guys never fail to amaze me! GEESH!

That makes a lot of sense because it would be odd for someone else to be opening a letter addressed for his daughter's tenth birthday. In the last scene the little girl holds her hand to her shoulder (a motion of self comfort) which the lady also does.

Every time I listen to this song I can't get over how much it sounds like the singer is smiling as he says "Shirt's on backwards, Not on purpose". I don't think I've heard any songs with such clear yet subtle emotion like Half Alive's. Easily one of my favorite bands. Never stop doing what you enjoy and thank your for sharing your art.

The artistry, choreography and emotional resonance depicted in this music video is poignant yet succinct. The song that serves as it's vehicle is enhanced by the weight of it's melancholic climax of us realizing he's shipping off during WW2.
This could quite possibly be the greatest music video ever made. Who ever directed this was clearly moved and inspired by the song.

The number of surreal things that happen in this video and the possible meanings is amazing.
My favorite is when you see the father leaving for wherever. The door opens out, and is opened from the outside by the other two men. Not only is where he is going foreign to her, but it feels like he's being taken away from her as well.

Wow, that line. It gave me chills.
When facing my depression and I tend not to get excited about anything anymore I stumbled upon a video describing how I was feeling and they told me “I literally don’t have to feel that way” then I came to the first realization of this part of the song “I don’t need to run away” meaning I don’t have to “end my life” cause I really didn’t find anything interesting about this world
Then I got to find out about Christ and he showed me that I wasn’t depressed I was just longing for something different and everlasting which was him (Christ) and then this this line from the song I got to understand better “everything I am is everything I shouldn’t be”
It’s like cognitive dissonance where the life you’re living isn’t lining up with the life you want to live
