Been using K&N filters on my Motorcycles and cars for years and still do.All the issues you hear about K&N filters, are caused by people not knowing how to clean and re-oil them. Here's what I do.First off, don't use that cleaner,it does not work. All you need to do is submerse the filter in warm, not hot, soapy water.Let it soak for an hour or so,then run clean cold water through it for about 10 minutes.Once this is done, shake the excess water out of the filter then just leave it do dry naturally.Once you are happy the filter is dry, very, very lightly spray the K&N oil onto the outside of the filter, making sure you have covered all of it,do not spray oil on the inside! and there you go,job done.

Good to know on the Mountune / K&N. I plan to get that for my new vehicle. I like that you just have to spray rinse and let dry to use it again for another 10,000 miles instead of changing every time you get an oil change. Thank you for that information.

I prefer Dry-Flow Air Filters vs Oiled Air Filters. Why? Allow me to explain in further detail.
K&N has 1/3 the dust holding capacity of OEM filters before restricting, and passes 47x more fine dust. Basically, you got a filter that you have to clean 3x as often as you would replace a regular filter, with the only advantage being that now you only have to pay for the cleaning kit.
They don't necessarily run better so to speak, it's actually less restrictive on air flow. You can actually see more light passing through a K&N filter vs an AEM or AMSOIL filter. This is why as I've told many groups and forums over the past few years, K&N Airflow benefits are only right up until it accumulates a bit of dust.
    1. These filters pass 47x more fine dust, they need maintaining 3x as often, they cost 2-4x as much as an OEM filter (not including the cleaning kit), and as an added bonus, they have a tendency to foul up MAF sensors if you aren't careful when you're oiling them.
    2. TBH with you they're not appropriate for street cars, and that's primarily due to the poor efficiency. Cummins actually has a TSB out telling techs to check what filter is being used when their trucks come in with dusted turbos. Google " turbo dusting " if you don't know what I'm talking about. Last tech I spoke to, he denied warranties on several trucks when they showed up with dusted turbos and a K&N filter. Poor filtration efficiency = not suitable for street cars. Modern engines with tight tolerances, low friction piston rings, and turbochargers should not use K&N filters.
    3. Often, they do start showing issues, but these are usually long-term issues, not 40k miles. Think closer to 100k miles. Bottom line is these filters suck for filtration, but what's worse is they clog 3x faster than an OE filter media of the same dimensions, so you're cleaning them 3x as often, and any performance benefits are negated totally half-way through the filter's dust loading cycle. On those merits, what exactly is the benefit of the K&N filter if you're not cleaning it every 5-10k miles? These are good filters if you have a track built car and you need something that flows a little better when clean and you don't drive it enough to dust load it, but for a daily driven vehicle, they have a number of drawbacks that can be easily addressed with a better synthetic nanofiber filter like AMSOIL, the Injen EA (also made by AMSOIL), or AEM. These filters allow you to run a larger conical filter for the increased surface area (which reduces restriction), while not having to deal with the poor filtration efficiency while maintaining flow under dust loading. That really is the bottom line. There are better filters out there that don't have the drawbacks of this antiquated 1970's filtration technology.
In closing, I happen to own a Focus ST (2018) I opted for the AEM Dry-Flow Air Filter. It traps more fine dust and dirt, costs actually less than other filters and doesn't require me to have to buy a cleaning kit. Not to mention less down time between cleaning.

Nice video man...I have been watching your channel from Namibia in Africa! Just a note mate, I actually have a Cobb filter, did a single coat of oil like you did there about a year ago. I actually found dust on the inside of my intake tube by the PCV line. Recently I cleaned it again and applied 5 coats of oil to the filter...no dust so far, no oil on the MAF sensor. Namibia is arid, just like Arizona, thought I'd share it with you.

I have a 2017 Focus ST and even though you have moved on I want to comment. Your videos made me purchase an ST. It was a great play by play. Also, you don't need to spray the inside of the filter with oil....you don't want that sucked in. Future reference for future cars lol. Now on to the Tesla video's!

Isn't the air coming through the non-capped open end not getting filtered? It seems it would get sucked directly into the inside of the filter from the engine bay.

@RGBGFIVE I would go back to stock air filter ASAP. oiled air filters like the K&N have issues in the Focus ST, the oil builds up in the intake and eventually coats the MAF sensor and causes it to overheat. That is why the red disappears from the filter, its getting sucked through the filter... Bad mojo.

That's a really good point you bring up and mine did lose the color as you know. I actually haven't put it back in since I cleaned it but I am going to talk to the people at Mountune to see their opinion on it.

Just purchased my K&N filter for the ST today! I'm curious if you had any issues with the housing seating back into place with this filter? It definitely took some work to get it into place... Not forceful, just not easy. Did you notice this with your K&N?

Thanks for the tutorial mate, just curious with your intake, do you have the full intake piping or just the high flow filter? If you only have the filter, do you still get extra intake noise and can hear the blow off valve more with just the filter?
