Civil War (2024) Movie Review - Its Not What You Think

- Civil War Movie Review - Kirsten Dunst stars as Lee, a press photographer whose trying to survive in a country divided. Many people are going to see this movie thinking it's going to be about the conflict. They will be disappointed. Civil War is about the press, journalists and reporters who go behind enemy lines to get the story out. The film is incredibly intense from start to finish and easily my favorite this year.

I liked it. Gave it 7/10 in my review. But yeah the trailers definitely made it out to be a war movie... When in reality.... It's a road movie....
Dang it! Oh well, I still want to watch it, though.
The last third is definitely a war movie.
Glad you enjoyed it
I actually loved it. If anything, it should've been a miniseries. And Kirsten Dunst's performance was incredible.
Is she gonna say they were being sexist on set in 20 years like Spiderman 😂
This movie was a mess and made no sense, why did they think an interview with the president would’ve been possible? Bunch of eye candy with no substance and a terrible ending.
One of those movies I tend to like more, the more I think about it. I like that it was just a "you are there" journey film. Whatever side of today's political divide you're on, this movie throws some nuggets out there for you to like. And even though it's not really what you'd expect from the trailers, by the final scene...it kinda' is. And I say that in a good way.
While it's hard to say if this is going to stay 'on top' throughout the year, it's certainly got me more intrigued about going to see it again than Dune Part 2. That 109 minute runtime might have a lot to do with it. Civil War doesn't overstay its welcome by bludgeoning us over-the-head with its mythos for 3 or 4 hours.
Who actually expected an A24 trailer to be whats advertised? I’m glad it wasn’t just a full blown war film.. I loved this film.. favorite of the year this far.
I think this is what may have helped me. I knew this wouldn’t be a typical warpacked movie made by A24 especially with the budget
Agreed.
They are great at that as well.
A24 LOVES TO PLAY WITH OUR MINDS. I LOVE THAT ABOUT THEM AND I LOVED THIS MOVIE!
The only reason Jesse Plemons was in this is because he's married to Kirstin Dunst
I love movies like this because every side of politics will try to claim it for their team. Like "The Hunt". Haven't seen this one yet but I will when it's on streaming.
The Hunt took shots at both sides, but it probably did go after out of touch rich coastal liberals the most.
@@Mickey-1994 yea, I interpreted it as more of a shot against liberal elitists, but they weren't shy about taking jabs at uneducated hillbillies. I thought it was a good movie though, it was fun.
The hunt mostly went after the liberal elites and made fun of conservatives only a little bit. The main character was a southern woman who served in the military during a time of war. She wins the whole movie and she's very likely a conservative or bare minimum a centrist patriot. You obviously didn't watch the movie. 😂
Think of it as a modern day Easy Rider parable; a road trip type movie with alternatiing moments of beauty, grace and introspection, punctuated by scenarios of sheer terror and ultra-violence. Like Easy Rider, you either got it or you didn't. Personally, it goes into my Top 250 films ever made. The sound design is incredible. This movie will haunt you for days and weeks to come, as you mull over each montage and vignette, wondering about it's irony and the what-if scenarios...saw it in IMAX, which I recommend if you are going to see it once. I'm going back for a second viewing in Dolby this week, to catch any of the nuances I may have missed...
Spider-Man was not there to save his woman in Civil War
I thought it was brilliant. It reminds me of a realistic Christopher Nolan movie with hints of an Apocalypse Now style mission. The music took me to the post Vietnam Era.
Many wanted to know the cause of the war but the context of the war is not important. Most 21st century Americans (except the naive) know how this could happen.
Overall, this movie was an essay warning us (Americans) to not let our politicians lead us in this direction because…, in a war everyone loses.
Since this movie wasn't 100% war fighting, it gave it a chance to have character moments, and how Kirsten Dunst and her crew view the war. I liked the stop-movement picture shots. That was a nice touch
This film was super interesting. While the president is slightly Trump coded, it's mostly politically agnostic. As someone who knows multiple "Boogaloo Boys" a big part of this movie is showing people who want another civil war how awful it would actually be.
Yeah it's hard to tell if it was intentional or just because Trump is in our minds of current day politics.
If generation's in the future watch this, would they assume that's Trump like. Idk.
The desription of the movie was "following reporters capturing the war"
It is what reporters should be doing.
But it does set up a prequal which can show how the country got to where it is
4 mins and 35 second in. I think THATS the point of the movie. I think everyone THINKS there’s a deeper vein to explore with why people are fighting and how people make up their own purpose for doing what they want to do- but it’s ultimately just people, snap shots, snap decisions, and no matter what one character would say to comment on US political unrest… there is no excuse for this future. And the observers who watch don’t ascribe meaning to what’s happening because there is no one truth or suggestion.
However you feel about the idea of a Civil War, whatever reason you believe people would be fighting for what, you’re wrong. Because it’s always bigger than what just you believe and then, at the same time, as small as one person trying to kill someone just because that person is trying to kill them. There is no sense. No point to be made. The truth is these main characters found a purpose in observing and capturing these events- why wouldn’t war be disappointing and meaningless when that’s what keeps being revealed to us about every form of role model and world leader since 2016 and before?
You really think a version of this movie where they do a bunch of exposition trying to wedge in modern political ideology would’ve been better?
Garland is trying to say that modern political parties aren’t all that different from one another and yet they still would get to the brink of war with neighbors. This movie doesn’t work if they add in all of the political exposition. And he doesn’t get that big of a budget
I don't think I said it would be better. I loved this film and recall stating that he was brilliant for not going in any specific direction.
Did Saving Private Ryan go into detail about Hitler's rising and sides and factions!? No....
There's so much you didn't understand about the Directors choices.
Offerman & Plemons were shown in one capacity, one scene in the trailer/s and their names aren'ton the poster!!
Glad you enjoyed it though and speak your mind, it's refreshing.
Yes and WW2 is a real war, this isn’t a fair comparison lol.
The films by no means was boring.. very intense, people are just mad it was apolitical
Because the trailer was misleading
Your opinion is subjective just as theirs.
@@lIlIlIlIlIlIIIIIIII we must test people anxiety levels throughout the movie to see if your statement is true
The road trip element of the film is very 28 days later, which Garland also wrote
I was expecting a road trip movie with the war as a backdrop, with the characters changing along the way. Only one did and in real life there is no F'ing way the President would still be in DC in that situation. Would have been choppered out to a secure location weeks before!
I auditioned for this film and got a callback too. Maybe on the next A24 film.
How did you get to audition?
Congrats, man! Who did you audition for?
Q1: I got the audition from my management company at the time. To give you a bit detail, majority castings/auditions are through agencies/managements. There are occasions where the casting directors do post their breakdowns on wide variety of websites that anyone pursuing acting can submit. Those roles need a wider net because of maybe a specific physical need to language and such where the typical casting calls through agencies might not yield much result. For example, if they need to cast a 6' 4" or above actor that speaks Navajo then they would post that widely to all available sites.
Q2: I auditioned for the role of Bohai, the reckless driving Chinese journalist. After watching the film, I can see why I didn't get cast since the other Chinese journalist, Tony had long hair which I do also and perhaps too close in looks (type wise). They went with an actor that had a more professional journalist look. Coincidentally, the actor that plays Tony was from management company that I was part of.
@@bklyncrook Oh, I see! Well, again, congrats on your callback. I hope to see you in a future A24 film!
Thank you for sharing, that was an interesting read.
Will give this one a go! Thanks for the review adam.
Awesome movie! I love how the president was asked for a quote before he was shot, then the soldiers posed with his dead body like a trophy deer, complete with cheesy grins.
I can agree the meaning or meanings of the film was a bit subtle
But I loved it. 👍🏽
"Dune Part 2" or "Monkey Man" are my candidates for best film in 2024 (so far)... This film was incredibly boring, and the two deaths at the end were kinda ridiculous 👎🏽
Civil Bore. That is all.
Gawd do I love Men. Big fan of ex machina. Great review!
Glad you liked it. What about those deaths though? The end? Took me out of it. Also the music took me out of it.
This is by far the most spoiler filled "spoiler free" review.
You didn't see the movie then.
Adam does not understand this film. Garland did a brilliant job of not permitting it to become a Blue/Red debate, which would settle nothing. This film is for those who understand that this country has been taken from the people by both parties, that it is on a trajectory of coming apart, and that before it can become something new it is likely to be a hell of a mess. That was what Garland set out to do and he has done it very well.
Wrong
I wholeheartedly disagree.
I can live with your disagreement.
@@howardskillington4445 Honestly... you've got no choice in the matter so glad you've accepted your fate. 🤗 It was a horrible movie and I love most movies normies hate. Many many other people echo my feelings.
The trailer definitely looked interesting. The way you put it, Adam, sounds like the film takes a somewhat neutral pov of whatever is going on in the story and put all biases aside. At the end of the day, I feel like afterwards people's biases would kick back in for the most part and the conversation starts from there.
I agree with everything you said. I enjoyed Civil War, but Dune 2 is the best movie I've seen this year so far.
It can’t be that hard fighting people on rollerblades and wearing Stetsons anyway. Will have to see this though.
😂😂😂
I agree with this guys review, very well said.
its no john wick.
much to many folks chagrin lol.
The movie starts out in episode (2) which means you came to that conclusion without having seen the prequel . The prequel of the full script clearly explains what lead up to the civil war. 1. It begins with Mr. T. loosing his court trial and being sent to prison. 2. The maga movement will see this as rigging another election. 3. Within Mr. B's first year in office during his second term, the immigration crisis goes out of control. 4. The maga movement in California & Texas unite to close the borders by forming the Western Forces patriot militia.. 5. The script explains that after 2024 the two party system is broken and from that split become the (nationalist) & (loyalist) parties. 6. By Mr. B's 2nd year in office Alaska will succeed from the union. 7. Once Alaska succeeds the loyalist party will form their own militia to try and prevent other states from succeeding. 8. By Mr. B's 3rd term in office, Mr. RD will allied with other nationalist to form the the Florida Alliance to help the Western forces fight against the Loyalist movement. 9. By Mr. B's 4th year in office the entire country will be in such turmoil, that the country will not be able to hold another presidential election and Mr. B's cabinet will stay in place for a (3rd) term. 10. Within Mr. B's 3rd term he will BAN the Free Press and and only allow what the nationalist party calls the fake news medias to broadcast his messages. 11. By the ending Mr. B's first year in office of his 3rd term (civil war) will spread across America. THIS is where we see this MOVIE begin. The first part of the script was deem to controversial so it was discontinued.
Civil War made zero sense and I have no clue how this film is getting good review… I don’t trust any of them.
I thought. the film was great! I read about the story before watching it, so I knew exactly what the film was about. I can see people being disappointed or confused by what the trailer presented.
Its there fault. Misleading. If you watch the trailer many tought its action movie. But its opposite.
If you're an Alex Garland fan I highly recommend his show Devs. Seems like nobody knows about it
Liked and subbed
"Incredibly well shot" - actually,, lots of problems with accuracy. Clickbait.
As soon as I heard that California and Texas were teamed up in this movie I knew it wouldn't be realistic. Those two states are about as opposite of the spectrum as you can get politically. I lost any interest in this movie as soon as I heard that.
Great film this… from a Brit.
The movie was intense, terrifying, and it feels like a horror movie! I love it!
9/10

Say it ain't so !!!!!!!😢
You are my favorite
This movie sucked but not quite as much as GxK. It had some good stuff in it but they could have brought us through so much more than they did in an hour and 50 minutes. I feel like modern script writers don’t know how to write anymore. It feels like I could watch a 2 hour movie and come out with nothing to say but “the gun sounds were cool”.
so this movie is batman v superman level of gimmick?
Yeh I hated this movie. I thought it was so boring
Awesome review of my favorite movie!!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Nice! Really solid flick.
This film is basically the closing days of the civil war. I guess social commentary wasn't needed. The journalists mission is to interview the President before the Western Militia reaches the nations capital. My gripe about Civil War was the movie doesn't give us enough of Nick Offerman as the President. We should have at least got to know his motives as commander and chief. I was pretty satisfied of how everything is implied for the most part. It was nice little character study. It's not a great film like most people are saying. The ending was so God awful, it needed a smarter finish.
I don't think that a film not taking sides will help it hold up. I've seen quite a few movies that came out in ww2 that were afraid to take a political stance or choose a side. having a bunch of characters that can't decide if they are cool with nazis or not, doesn't hold up well lol. but you know what did hold up well? the movies where where they were brave enough to take a stance like ' the nazis are the bad guys'. so I'd say the movies that hold up the most are ones that take a stance. a stance that seems obvious now but was potentially controversial back when it was made
This movie had nothing to do with taking a stance. It was shot through the eyes of journalists who's job wasn't to have an opinion, but film and report it as they saw it.
@@Iacon40kbut they actually didn't report anything. They took a bunch of pictures with no added context to it whatsoever. In fact they didn't interview one person during the whole road trip.
@@s.n.9485
Their job was to get to DC fast as possible to get an interview with the president before the western front arrived. They didn't have time to stop and interview everyone they came across.
Who are the bad guys in America today? the people that don't vote like you.
Not even worth watching on a plane.
This movie was just a political bait and people fell for it....and Spiderman gf wanted more money, soo let's cry about that too.
It may not come out as political but you have watch between the lines a president in hiding from his people the film is more political then what he's saying. Stick with people who actually know how to review a movie let alone a war movie. His review is a thumbs down. Thank you Roger Ebert
People thought FMJ was garbage about a journalist soldier but now it’s a cult classic. This definitely will be thought of the same way someday but sooner.
FMJ made sense at the time. America wasn't in turmoil and coming off Top Guns box office run, America was primed for GI films...as I stated in my own review. I thnk its trash, its divisive, and truly makes zero sense
Definitely a tedious bore. A disjointed childish and cliched script. How embarrassing for the actors involved.
I dispised Jessie... She was annoying and what she became in the end made me really really angry.
She became Lee. Circle of life.
@@AdamDoesMovies
Not at all. Sammy has been at the game longer than both of them and he still kept his humanity.
Jessie and Lee are examples of bad media that we hate...
I don't disagree with you but Lee was the one mentoring her. She idolized Lee. It made sense for her character. Doesn't make it right but it felt like a natural conclusion.
Saw an imax showing today and the movie is insanely intense there were multiple times i jolted like i got shocked by electricity and every shot and the acting was stellar 10/10.
This was a horrible movie and that comes from somebody who likes all of Alex's other movies. I instantly lose respect for any movie reviewer who says otherwise. 😅
😂😂😂😂😂 totally missed the plot.... You are projecting your viewpoints on the film, you wanted the director to "join a team"... The film is about how tyranny develops when people "pick a side"...
I never said I wanted the director to join a team. In fact, I stated it was brilliant that he didn't.
What a waste. Don't read my comments if you haven't seen it.... Stupid plot issues: Plemons didn't hear a truck coming towards him over 200 feet of gravel? The President doesn't take refuge in the White House bunker? Horrible music choices- totally takes you out of the moment. And stopping the action to show the black and white photos the "reporters" are taking? The only clever thing is that payment for gas had to be made in Canadian dollars as the US Dollar was practically worthless due to inflation, Your favorite movie of 2024? What about Dune 2?
Garbage. Bored me to tears.
I actually fell asleep halfway through this movie and my wife had to wake me up. It was BORING and it had nothing to say about anything.
Not only was it boring, it was kind of pointless. I left the movie thinking, why did they even make this? Was this a movie about American discourse or just to highlight what war journalists do? Either way it was boring.
That’s so funny the comment below you literally stated how interesting and engaging the film was. Love the division 😂
The actors and actresses did a great job but it was a snooze fest
The movie was a waste of time
Adam ill give you a big hint, the current stupid political views and ideological stances led to the war.
Movie was beautiful but sucked.
I just finished watching, and the movie sucked!
If you found it boring, it's because you suffer from caveman brain! You're too used to having action dangled in front of your face like keys. Action is shown here as it is. I didn't see any trailers! I just walked in. Best decision. Great film!
I think it's lack of empathy too. They literally can not place themselves in the characters shoes. And these characters shoes were extremely tense and constantly suspenseful.
@@GoldenTV3 Tell me about it! I'm an action junkie, but that sniper scene. Literally caught me with my eyes closed!
Movie was absolutely pointless
I thought this movie was awful.
I thought it was great 👍🏽
Why?
Sure bud.
Boring trash glorifying non biased journalists gimme a break
WOW THE COMMERCIALS REALLY SUCKED ME IN... BUT the movie sucked and was boring no dialogue no story just taking pictures of soldiers in war doing stupid crap it's seriously boring as crap
lol reporters not taking a side. tell me another joke
If you were a reporter, you’d still take a side, unless you’re A.I.
Liked it
California and Texas team up... so you're saying it a fantasy flick... that's a bold strategy Cotton.
Yawn........So boring this Movie is.
Not at all. It really shows you the horrors to come. I do agree that more action and more showing the debate side of politics.
California & Texas teaming up? uhhhhh...the director must not be from around here
This movie sucked !! Bad acting also !!
Shit looks WEAK. Annihilation is amazing, but this looks like garbage.
This is such a weak argument. There was nothing misleading about these trailers, or the movie. The president didn't need a huge appearance in the movie, why?? Because according to the journalist, his actions basically started this whole mess. The death and destruction his administration caused tells you everything you need to know about this man. As for Jessie Plemons, i don't recall ANYWHERE in the promo that made you think he had a big part in this film, although his character is the most chilling, and what makes me pray to God something like this never happens
I'm letting people know what to expect. I loved the movie and stated it was my favorite of the year.
You missed the point. They decided to drop "bread crumbs" to tie the movie back to current politics. References to "MAGA", "Anti-fa", China, Enemies of the State (the press), ordering the military to attack civilians, Candace Owens as negotiator, leave no doubt who we are talking about. That was done so that the back story wouldn't interfere with the main story about what journalism is supposed to be about. Sacrifice. To get the story.
Bingo. Current politics leas to the war, thought it was obvious. Glad no stance was taken.
Clandace Owens 😂
So then who was the Western Forces?
@@raycar9827 Both California and Texas have secessionist movements going. Strange bedfellows yes, but history is full of them. The French resistance was filled with criminals who worked with the underground French government to defeat the Nazis. Most were pardoned after the war.
This movie is trash
The title was dumb and has nothing to do with the movie. Zero plot (why characters do what they do not explained, or one sentence explanation) Characters are FANTASTICLY stupid, it pushed the disbelief too far. "I'm from Hong Kong" this is so stupid ..... my 14 years old son told me "there is no way he would say that, guaranteed death" 95% bad all around. Bad plot wise, character wise, it was level high school film made with friends in my backyard. "Why explain stuff, MEH, who cares, this is for 15 years old cafeteria anyway"
All this is exactly how I felt. People made decisions that made absolutely sense. Terrible script.
In a scary situation.. I believe you will tend not to think clearly. And Ripping on the title is one of your complaints?
@@zacgale4231 Attacking my character, stop showing off you have nothing to say.
