  • Civil War Movie Review - Kirsten Dunst stars as Lee, a press photographer whose trying to survive in a country divided. Many people are going to see this movie thinking it's going to be about the conflict. They will be disappointed. Civil War is about the press, journalists and reporters who go behind enemy lines to get the story out. The film is incredibly intense from start to finish and easily my favorite this year.

One of those movies I tend to like more, the more I think about it. I like that it was just a "you are there" journey film. Whatever side of today's political divide you're on, this movie throws some nuggets out there for you to like. And even though it's not really what you'd expect from the trailers, by the final scene...it kinda' is. And I say that in a good way.
While it's hard to say if this is going to stay 'on top' throughout the year, it's certainly got me more intrigued about going to see it again than Dune Part 2. That 109 minute runtime might have a lot to do with it. Civil War doesn't overstay its welcome by bludgeoning us over-the-head with its mythos for 3 or 4 hours.

The hunt mostly went after the liberal elites and made fun of conservatives only a little bit. The main character was a southern woman who served in the military during a time of war. Think of it as a modern day Easy Rider parable; a road trip type movie with alternatiing moments of beauty, grace and introspection, punctuated by scenarios of sheer terror and ultra-violence. Like Easy Rider, you either got it or you didn't. Personally, it goes into my Top 250 films ever made. The sound design is incredible. This movie will haunt you for days and weeks to come, as you mull over each montage and vignette, wondering about it's irony and the what-if scenarios...saw it in IMAX, which I recommend if you are going to see it once. I'm going back for a second viewing in Dolby this week, to catch any of the nuances I may have missed...

I thought it was brilliant. It reminds me of a realistic Christopher Nolan movie with hints of an Apocalypse Now style mission. The music took me to the post Vietnam Era.
Many wanted to know the cause of the war but the context of the war is not important. Most 21st century Americans (except the naive) know how this could happen.
Overall, this movie was an essay warning us (Americans) to not let our politicians lead us in this direction because…, in a war everyone loses.

This film was super interesting. While the president is slightly Trump coded, it's mostly politically agnostic. As someone who knows multiple "Boogaloo Boys" a big part of this movie is showing people who want another civil war how awful it would actually be.

  • @highcontrastflm

4 mins and 35 second in. I think THATS the point of the movie. I think everyone THINKS there’s a deeper vein to explore with why people are fighting and how people make up their own purpose for doing what they want to do- but it’s ultimately just people, snap shots, snap decisions, and no matter what one character would say to comment on US political unrest… there is no excuse for this future. And the observers who watch don’t ascribe meaning to what’s happening because there is no one truth or suggestion.
However you feel about the idea of a Civil War, whatever reason you believe people would be fighting for what, you’re wrong. Because it’s always bigger than what just you believe and then, at the same time, as small as one person trying to kill someone just because that person is trying to kill them. There is no sense. No point to be made. The truth is these main characters found a purpose in observing and capturing these events- why wouldn’t war be disappointing and meaningless when that’s what keeps being revealed to us about every form of role model and world leader since 2016 and before?

  • @Lancaster51

You really think a version of this movie where they do a bunch of exposition trying to wedge in modern political ideology would’ve been better?
Garland is trying to say that modern political parties aren’t all that different from one another and yet they still would get to the brink of war with neighbors. This movie doesn’t work if they add in all of the political exposition. And he doesn’t get that big of a budget

      @bklyncrook 3 месяца назад +4

Q1: I got the audition from my management company at the time. To give you a bit detail, majority castings/auditions are through agencies/managements. There are occasions where the casting directors do post their breakdowns on wide variety of websites that anyone pursuing acting can submit. Those roles need a wider net because of maybe a specific physical need to language and such where the typical casting calls through agencies might not yield much result. For example, if they need to cast a 6' 4" or above actor that speaks Navajo then they would post that widely to all available sites.
Q2: I auditioned for the role of Bohai, the reckless driving Chinese journalist. After watching the film, I can see why I didn't get cast since the other Chinese journalist, Tony had long hair which I do also and perhaps too close in looks (type wise). They went with an actor that had a more professional journalist look. Coincidentally, the actor that plays Tony was from management company that I was part of.

Adam does not understand this film. Garland did a brilliant job of not permitting it to become a Blue/Red debate, which would settle nothing. This film is for those who understand that this country has been taken from the people by both parties, that it is on a trajectory of coming apart, and that before it can become something new it is likely to be a hell of a mess. That was what Garland set out to do and he has done it very well.

The movie starts out in episode (2) which means you came to that conclusion without having seen the prequel . The prequel of the full script clearly explains what lead up to the civil war. 1. It begins with Mr. T. loosing his court trial and being sent to prison. 2. The maga movement will see this as rigging another election. 3. Within Mr. B's first year in office during his second term, the immigration crisis goes out of control. 4. The maga movement in California & Texas unite to close the borders by forming the Western Forces patriot militia.. 5. The script explains that after 2024 the two party system is broken and from that split become the (nationalist) & (loyalist) parties. 6. By Mr. B's 2nd year in office Alaska will succeed from the union. 7. Once Alaska succeeds the loyalist party will form their own militia to try and prevent other states from succeeding. 8. By Mr. B's 3rd term in office, Mr. RD will allied with other nationalist to form the the Florida Alliance to help the Western forces fight against the Loyalist movement. 9. By Mr. B's 4th year in office the entire country will be in such turmoil, that the country will not be able to hold another presidential election and Mr. B's cabinet will stay in place for a (3rd) term. 10. Within Mr. B's 3rd term he will BAN the Free Press and and only allow what the nationalist party calls the fake news medias to broadcast his messages. 11. By the ending Mr. B's first year in office of his 3rd term (civil war) will spread across America. THIS is where we see this MOVIE begin. The first part of the script was deem to controversial so it was discontinued.

This film is basically the closing days of the civil war. I guess social commentary wasn't needed. The journalists mission is to interview the President before the Western Militia reaches the nations capital. My gripe about Civil War was the movie doesn't give us enough of Nick Offerman as the President. We should have at least got to know his motives as commander and chief. I was pretty satisfied of how everything is implied for the most part. It was nice little character study. It's not a great film like most people are saying. The ending was so God awful, it needed a smarter finish.

I don't think that a film not taking sides will help it hold up. I've seen quite a few movies that came out in ww2 that were afraid to take a political stance or choose a side. having a bunch of characters that can't decide if they are cool with nazis or not, doesn't hold up well lol. but you know what did hold up well? the movies where where they were brave enough to take a stance like ' the nazis are the bad guys'. so I'd say the movies that hold up the most are ones that take a stance. a stance that seems obvious now but was potentially controversial back when it was made

If you found it boring, it's because you suffer from caveman brain! You're too used to having action dangled in front of your face like keys. Action is shown here as it is. I didn't see any trailers! I just walked in. Best decision. Great film!

I think it's lack of empathy too. They literally can not place themselves in the characters shoes. And these characters shoes were extremely tense and constantly suspenseful.

This is such a weak argument. There was nothing misleading about these trailers, or the movie. The president didn't need a huge appearance in the movie, why?? Because according to the journalist, his actions basically started this whole mess. The death and destruction his administration caused tells you everything you need to know about this man. As for Jessie Plemons, i don't recall ANYWHERE in the promo that made you think he had a big part in this film, although his character is the most chilling, and what makes me pray to God something like this never happens

You missed the point. They decided to drop "bread crumbs" to tie the movie back to current politics. References to "MAGA", "Anti-fa", China, Enemies of the State (the press), ordering the military to attack civilians, Candace Owens as negotiator, leave no doubt who we are talking about. That was done so that the back story wouldn't interfere with the main story about what journalism is supposed to be about. Sacrifice. To get the story.

The title was dumb and has nothing to do with the movie. Zero plot (why characters do what they do not explained, or one sentence explanation) Characters are FANTASTICLY stupid, it pushed the disbelief too far. "I'm from Hong Kong" this is so stupid ..... my 14 years old son told me "there is no way he would say that, guaranteed death" 95% bad all around. Bad plot wise, character wise, it was level high school film made with friends in my backyard. "Why explain stuff, MEH, who cares, this is for 15 years old cafeteria anyway"
