The worst thing about this film is that it sucks as a detective thriller and as a horror. There is pretty much zero actual detecting. Longlegs basically guides her and then she magically solves the cyphers. So it's boring on that front. Then the supernatural element is not scary, comes too late and is underbaked and underwhelming. Just all around terrible...but it looks and sounds really nice.

    • @pepperpepperandbayleaf3025

She doesn't magically solve the ciphers, Longlegs helps her with that too 😂. He leaves a note in her house with a message, both in code and decoded, and she is able to solve it because of that.

Was it supposed to be supernatural at the end? I couldn’t figure that out? Like, I thought maybe it was veering into “Sci-fi” territory, what with the mysterious, metallic ball somehow “controlling” the family… OR WAS THAT SUPPOSED TO BE SATAN? (Church Lady voice 😈) 😉

The scene where she’s on the phone to her mum and the door bangs was the scariest moment for me. Something so visceral about being a woman alone and vulnerable in that moment, even without any supernatural element that would get to me.
But like you said, nothing happened with it. She put the chain on the door, she sees something outside and GOES OUTSIDE LEAVING HER DOOR OPEN. Lock the doors and call someone c’mon.
Then doesn’t she open the birthday card early? It says don’t open til Jan 14th and she opens it instantly. I was waiting for some consequence to that but it never materialises. By the time they show long legs in the grocery store it’s like all the intrigue is gone

So refreshing to hear you speak the truth about this movie. I'm so sick of all these 'critics' gushing over the most mediocre horror movies and pretending as if it is they are the best thing since Silence of the Lambs or Halloween. I can't think of any redeeming qualities this movie has. It is so slow paced and repeats the SAME BEAT the entire film. They tried to paint Long Legs as this Buffalo Bill / Hannibal Lector sort of creepiness and terrifying. But Nicholas Cage just had me laughing in disappointment at his portrayal the entire time. I never felt unnerved or scared of his appearance. It literally felt like I was watching an SNL skit. And when the time for the big reveal and twist of the film comes, they do it by dropping a bunch of exposition on us through narration. It would have been so much more satisfying if the main character found something in her home that relates her mother to Long Legs or her mother accidentally admitting something only the killer would know or literally ANYTHING rather than the script talking to us like we're too stupid to grasp the concept and spelling it out for us. And the amount of times the phrase "Hail Satan" is mentioned is ridiculous. It would have been so much more impactful if they ONLY TIME Long Legs said it was moments before bashing his head into the table and killing himself. Not to mention the corny wink and weird ending scene almost playing like a comedy. Overall just a boring, underwhelming, satanic crap from Hollywood. Will never revisit this again.

This movie does absolutely nothing for the genre. Shot very weirdly, barely even a “crime” movie. Sub par acting with a somewhat creepy character played by a good actor.

in those long shots you were looking for the wrong thing. there were no jumpscares there, there were creepy things lingering in the back few times. a shadow moving behind a couch, the horned figure disappearing form the yard. stuff like thatin the style of ju-on or lake mungo. the problem is that they always feel forced. this movie didnt earned that level of eeriness. it starts dumb, and it keeps being dumb. she saw somebody in her house, she found a letter somebody left in her house, yet, she doesn freak out or search for the intruder or even call for backup. nah she just sit s and opens the envelope. or at the very beginning, she has an intuition and immediately wants to call in support, she's' shut down but the usual "arrogant man" coworker, and when he gets instakilled, she doesnt call for backup or update their situation to the agency whatsoever. is it because the devil manipulated her? is it becaues she's a rookie? or is it because the director is a hack writer?

One scene that I did find creepy was the start of the house scene. Her house is this odd very rural cabin very dark hall ways and huge windows it’s very lynchian feeling. Then she goes out said and there’s a spooky figure and that kinda spoils the tension.

    • @MikeTrieu
      @MikeTrieu 19 дней назад

If you watch it again, the spooky figures appears in multiple places in various scenes, usually hiding in the shadows. You might have to crank up the gain in order to see it, though. Every time Lee has a creepy sensation, it's there.

I love when Americans are straight talkers and direct to the point and not trying to be nice for the sake of it, I agree with everything you say, this movie was a total failure, no redeeming qualities at all, boring predictable non story, not scary or spooky, plus why did the girl grow into a fully grown woman but longlegs didn't age and looks exactly the same, I struggled to stay awake, and I've got a good attention span I can watch and enjoy movies even without dialogue such as HAGAZUSSA because it's weird AF excellent cinematography and a story that can be watched on two levels

I liked everything but the actual story. That's sad. Style over substance, I guess, but the substance is key, and this movie did not have it. LongLegs is a messenger of Satan who whispers hellish commands into dolls' heads? The mom was his accomplice? Still? After all of these years? Why not just tell your daughter - the FBI agent - that your life has been tormented by this freak in the basement and get rid of him? Because no movie. That's why. Dumb. I liked Cage in this. He was creepy with that crazy makeup on and all. Story sucked though. Too bad. I had high hopes.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who didn't care for this movie and especially the heavy breathing. This movie looked washed out and dull and so did the characters. And the ending was just stupid. Why sit there and just let it happen? And scary? There are DIsney cartoons that are scarier, like Nemo being kidnapped, for example. And when a movie has to literally explain itself at the end- that's not a good sign. I LOVE It Follows. I should go watch that again to erase this movie from my mind.

One thing that keeps bothering me about the movie, is there are no reaction shots that convey any fear. No screams, no horrified expressions.
The only time they have anything like that, it’s a profile shot, and she’s covering her face.
And in the “priest” scene…no one makes a sound while an axe murder is occurring? Not one cry for help, or shout “wait! No!”. Very strange.

Well, that was explained in the last killing at her boss' house. Basically, the devil entrances the victims into doing his bidding via the doll. It's also why the kid is so calm and hugging the doll while her dad goes on his murderous rampage in the kitchen. It's another take on the possession trope.
