Biggest stretch is when she wakes up the next morning and discovers the house is located in a dilapidated neighborhood and she decides to stay there anyways.
I thought the biggest stretch was the characters mental capacity (more like lack of) and decision making. Each one worse than the last. The god awful predictability is a VERY close second! 👎
She had to stay! She had already paid for the second night and no way anyone in their right mind would lose $75 and go to a safe place! You need to stop using your common sense if you want this to make sense
@@ninjahandz1168 I'm sorry but.......did you ACTUALLY read what u just responded?!?! "No way anyone in their right mind would lose $75 and go to a safe place!" ??? Are you serious?! You really think someone that saw/experienced what she just had: .. 1.the dilapidated, beyond crack-house neighborhood, 2.the surprised/foreboding warning she got from her new boss to not be there, PLUS..... 3.the crazed out bag guy chasing her into the house (not too mention her then getting locked in the basement/finding "the room!") ..would then say to themselves "but I paid a whole $75 so that's definitely worth risking my life over?! What kind of self worth does one have if they believe that 75 bucks is worth more than their own safety/life! And THAT'S the BIGGEST problem with this movie, and what the uploader & DNICE41 were saying, there WAS NO common sense; which is what kills the majority of this film!
And what about the old man in the bed?? How was he surviving? When did he move into the catacombs and sell the property? Why did we have to meet him? Why was naked lady the only survivor down there? What did the neighbor mean when he said, “she’s not even the worst thing in there”? What was opening and closing the basement door??? Omg the amount of nonsense was truly remarkable.
I was hoping to see or hear some other creature since Keith said she's not he worst thing down there. However I could imagine worse, inbreeding creatures. I recall Jordan Peeles movie, "Nope", as how the audience wants to see a spectacle. So maybe the reason to not show anything was to give more reason to imagine the atrocities that lay in that basement
Also yeah that decaying old guy was in literal filth, malnourished. Shouldn't have been alive ! Couldnt even reach his water.....sure maybe the Monster Lady nursed him since there seemed to be a rope next to the Old Man and I think I saw a ball outside the door near AJ.
I think that when the neighbor told them that there was something worse down there, he was referring to the father. That he was actually the murderer and the one who created all the atrocities
he moved into the catacombs and sold the property when he was told that the neighborhood was “going to sh*t”, the naked lady was the only survivor because she was the last “human” birthed, the homeless man was talking about the old guy in the bed. the basement door was closing because of faulty hinges, and doors were being opened whenever the naked lady came out at night. any other “nonsense?”
Obviously the homeless man knew that the old dude was living down there. He is meaning that he is worse than the lady because he is a sick and sadistic rapist and murderer. He is pure evil and proud of it, the lady is just some derp
When the creature came out and killed Keith(who we thought was the antagonist) I thought to myself “this movie might be what I’ve been looking for” but I think the problem with this movie was it had a good concept, but poor execution. I liked the switch up, but it felt as if they were too focused on writing the unexpected that they failed to have proper pacing. We get only one flashback of the old man and when we finally see him he dies, we don’t see what Justin long sees on the tape, and that whole thing about his job just got dragged out too long. They had me up until Keith died.
i promise no one needed to see whatever he did on those tapes. that part is heavily implied. fill in the blanks with any horrific act that can be imagined
What great concept? a underwater dungeon beneath a home oh so fucking original. And the villain is the most bland and forgettablehting i have ever seeen
These are all the same criticisms I had. The thing that stuck out the most was that she was so worried about staying with a strange guy, but then the next day she throws away all concerns and goes spelunking under the only house on the street.
No kidding, and his reason for being there was that he lives in Detroit but wants to stay at an ABnB in the worst part of town where literally every house could be bought for $1.00?
Malignant did it right barbarian is a parody. Do not waste your money on this awful story. Also I remember why tess went into the basement.. she wanted a sh1t and couldn’t find toilet roll so that’s why she went into the basement to find some loo roll.. then the rest of the film is literal shit in a sewer 0.1/10 worst film of the year
Agreed with almost everything you said. I don't understand why people are so in love with this. I love horror and made a point to go in as fresh as you were. I was enjoying the first act. I thought it was building some great tension and suspicion, even through the discovery of the underground tunnels, I wasn't sure where we were going, if Skarsgard was the actual villain, but I was interested. Once the "creature" is revealed, it lost me, and the story behind that was ridiculous. I never at any point was scared or felt as much tension after that. Yes, that introduction with Justin Long was just waaaaay to long. We could have easily understood what a scum he was in half the time.
Yeah. I agree. I was thinking to myself how long this introduction to his character was going to be, and when are they going to get back to the horror stuff.
You liked the first act where it was going exactly where every horror movie goes and is predictable as shit? Okay, good news: there are literally thousands of those movies that exist for you to watch right now. Go watch them instead of wondering why people liked something different.
@@alexmaverick6647 it was NOT going exactly as every horror movie. That whole premise of both being stuck at the Air B & B was new and I didn't know who to trust, where it as going to go, or what was going to be revealed. The goofy idea that it was somehow a superhuman inbred was stupid and a sudden swerve in the reality of the movie that totally took me out of it.
@@alexmaverick6647 No. There are plenty of movies out there that are far better than this one, whether they follow a traditional structure or not. This one focuses on characters that I really don't care about, especially the one played by Justin Long, which the film spends way too much time introducing, bringing in forced comedy and other stuff.
I think the film gets so much praise, is because pseudo intellectuals think that any social commentary, no matter how misguided or off the mark, means to them they're watching high brow art. I would bet money that the same people praising this film, think that Tenet was a great film, and that the masses just don't get it.
Dumb choices by characters aside, the only thing I didn't like was the strength and invulnerability of The Mother. Fear of what in the dark can get you is much more interesting than being overpowered by an unbeatable juggernaut in full lit frame of the camera. Did they learn nothing from "The Predator"?
honestly, this is probably the only critique i have as well. too much super-monster action chase stuff at the end, but at least the visual effects held it all up nicely
I was thinking that’s not how gravity works..I know the creature was bigger and heavier than Tess but Tess was almost at ground level when the creature jumped..fucking laughable alright 😂
@@gerardhiggins4827 I'm so glad someone mentioned this! This was probably the most ridiculous thing. There's no way she breaks her fall after jumping after her. I almost cut the movie off right then.
Funny origin story of the word “barbarian.” It comes from Ancient Greece word “Barbaros” for people who didn’t speak Greek, and it name actually comes from joke about how foreign words sound like gibberish like “bar, bar, bar, bar,” to the Greeks.
Thank you! The underlying themes of the movie should never sacrifice the story, pacing, or break the laws of the writers world building. A movie should have a good story, and memorable characters to sell the message. Otherwise the meaning is an excuse for a writers inability to sell the story by itself. The third act really dropped the ball with absurdity and ridiculousness that lost credibility for our characters, making the climax fall flat. It just seems like a movie pandering to an audience by throwing in something for everyone instead of committing to a solid direction or idea. The acting, score, suspense, camerawork and even the tone change in the 2nd act all were well done and had potential. But the movie is far from being a masterpiece like reviews are making it out to be.
the film's not a classic in any regard, but it's a very strong writer/directorial debut imo. sure, the narrative jumps are jarring and could have been condensed in some parts and expanded upon in others, but the mood and atmosphere were on point through most of the story
I liked the first part of the movie and how they build suspense, also loved the shift in perspective right after the introduction of the monster. However I was definitely yelling at the screen for how stupid Tess was being going after Keith. I was like "hes not your friend you owe him nothing! Leave nooowww!"
Except, I did not like how they shifted in perspective and spent so much time with Justin Long dealing with being an asshole and having a sexual assault case about to ruin his career.
I thought the guy measuring the square footage of the basement was a really hilarious way to get him to go into the dungeon. Horror movies nowadays have to find an excuse to get the protagonist to ignore all logic and go deeper into a sketchy situation. Tess following Keith into the tunnel was completely irrational and lazy though. Either way, the movie seemed like a modern spin on a goofy 80s horror movie, I was thoroughly entertained but I did have to throw logic out the window to enjoy it. It was dumb fun. It definitely had the potential to be something greater.
I am just overall confused on what the plot was supposed to be. Like nothing was keeping them there, there was no supernatural entity locking them in the house or some outside force, it literally turned into dumb decision after dumb decision. I get horror movies have people that make dumb decisions throughout but at what point does it end the logical premise and just jump into the most random BS. Worst part is that this could be realistic, kidnapping women, impregnating them and then as the kids grow up they start impregnating the kids but that “thing” was 7 ft tall and had the strength of fucking Superman and even survived a fall from a 25 ft tower with no damage? Justin Longs character had no relevance in the movie, Bills character just seemed like a “who dunnit” style until they kill him off. I don’t know, to each their own but if you honestly truly liked this movie I would love an explanation on how the movie was “amazing” after the first 30 minutes.
I too thought that Justin Long's character was unnecessary since he was just used as a device to take the movie from Hollywood back to Michigan. They could have made Keith the owner and avoided all that. Everything else could have unfolded with Keith instead of AJ.
Pretty sure the tunnels were pre-existing either from the Underground Railroad or prohibition. Some real tunnels exist in older Detroit neighborhoods and we have urban legends about people moving into older homes and discovering hidden tunnels.
Yeah, this is the second time I’ve heard a viewer mistakenly assume the killer created the tunnels. No, those were railroad or mining tunnels. Apparently no one’s from areas where mining was a thing.
@@pyenapple If that's the case, it's absolutely absurd. Where did he get his excavation equipment, or is the writer dumb enough to think you can do that with a shovel? A little research would have done wonders. I'm seeing a lot of illogical writing in the genre in the last several years. Speak No Evil was the most recent example of this.
I heard from everyone that this was some kind of masterpiece, its all over the place, devotes tons of time to a character the movie just wants you to hate and has such an obvious message about "toxic masculinity" you can just see right through
The DUMBEST decision in the entire film was Tess finally getting back into her car, but instead of driving away to safety, SHE RUNS OVER THE MOM AND RUINS HER ONLY MODE OF TRANSPORTATION!?!!!
For me dumbest decisions that top even that moment, is when she decides to still stay in this house after seeing the neighborhood during the day and after her work-friend warned her about it, and also the other one is when she decides to go after the guy after he said he'll be back in 30 sec, instead of running out of house and calling for help/police.
I’m still trying to process what I just witnessed. This video is very therapeutic. I think “layer upon layer of shit” really sums it up. I think I’ll subscribe 😂
Personally, this was my biggest disappointment of 2022 regarding horror movies. I read and watched the positivity this movie was garnering when it came to the horror genre so I was pretty hyped going in but all excitement ended when this movie was centered about around a serial killer who makes copies of a copy of a copy etc.
I still liked the movie. None of what you said was wrong though. In fact it was nice just to hear someone talk extensively about the movie since I wasn't able to really give details out to anyone else.
It was dumb! No real plot and the monster looking woman squeezed the man eyes out at the end and it went off!!...Shortly before she looked back down at the ground and said "My baby, my baby" and the girl blew her brains out😂😂
@@justnickperiod4658 What was the plot? A monster looking lady with long breast kills stupid people that wonder down to the basement?😂... That was the only thing I saw...but if u liked it that's fine😂
Can someone please tell me how the doors locked and closed own?? If she was sleeping and the door opened because of the barbarian then how did it magically close and lock shut??
I am happy you have this review. I am a horror guy and saw it on HBO Max today. All other critics seem to praise it, but I was like WTF is that?! The first 20 minutes were good as you said and some of the directing was interesting, then it turned into sort of an anthology of (3) different films in a sense. And the big bad is supposed to be a new horror icon. WTF! Adam, I am with you on this one bud and others have to be drunk to praise this film.
Man I'm with u. I heard all the buzz on this movie and I was so happy to see it pop up on HBO Max. The first 30 minutes were great and built tension really well but after the monster reveal the film just got retarded
This movie was atrocious, I’m so happy to finally find some other people who think so. How is it getting such positive reviews?! This disaster of a movie can be summed up by the final scene where Tess gets thrown off the tower and lands on top of the creature who jumped off 5 seconds after her and they both survived. I almost stood up and yelled “OH COME ON!”
That moment is exactly where I decided I really didn't like the movie anymore. Pre Justin Long's character I liked it and was interested in where the hell the movie was going, and even after he was introduced, I was still somewhat on board, but it completely went to shit after that.
I hate how the cops go to the only nice house for blocks, with two new vehicles parked out front, and a key code lock box at the front door. When every other vehicle and house for blocks in every direction is destroyed. With a woman claiming to have rented the house, who knows the lock box code saying there's someone inside in danger. The cops would run the licence plates of both vehicles, and would find out one vehicle is owned by the woman, and the other is a rental. Two vehicles, and they're talking to the owner of one of the vehicles, so they'd wonder where the other person who was driving the rental was. There's no where else to go for blocks in any direction, there's a very good chance that person is inside. Why aren't they answering the door. The falling off the tower thing defies all logic too. The mental gymnastics required to make that outcome even remotely possible are insane to comprehend. That free fall would take at most two seconds. How someone defies the very laws of physics to fall faster than someone else and shield them when they would have already hit the ground before that person even leaped after them is ridiculous. Also, in the middle of a metropolis, how to do dispose of thousands of cubic feet of earth without raising suspicion. With a very conservative estimate, it would require at least 25-30 dump trucks full of earth be removed from the premises to build those underground rooms and tunnels. The labour required would be insane, plus was this guy calling Find a Line every week so he wouldn't hit gas, water, electric, and telecom services with his tunnels too. They were doing road construction a couple blocks from my house this summer, and cut out internet services twice.
This is an example of an allegory being more important than the in-world logic. The reasons for certain decisions is not to maintain plot integrity, but to be symbolic of something. The director said the film was about Male Privilege and Sexual Assault.
@Alooof23 I do appreciate when they do it in an original film that is meant for their allegory. At least they didn't shoehorn the allegory into an Alfred Hitchcock remake or an existing IP.
I'm kinda in-between on it. I see what critics who like it are saying about the incredible tension in the first act and how taking it out of the traditional structure by going out for the AJ story and then rejoining is different and fresh. But I didn't get the freakishly strong, 7 foot tall bit either. There should have been more or she should have been younger to really sell the copy of a copy of a copy. And the dumb decisions of all three leads made me want to bang my head on the floor. And while I do like all the underlying themes, I can't give it that physics defying leap-save off the water tower.
Spoiler: ....just going to say...wow. fucking wow. This movie was awful. I wasn't scared or uncomfortable. I laughed throughout the entire movie. The "victims" were so stupid. There were plenty of opportunities for the victims to escape or leave. The "metaphor" flopped. "Women are conditioned in society to be cautious because they aren't safe and men are oblivious to their surroundings and men not listing to women" this film was directed by a rich white man so we all just got mansplained to through a "horror" film. To me this movie was just a bunch of stupid people getting themselves killed by a flappy titted monster that I named "Flappjacks". I don't care if I spoiled this. *also the reason it's called "Barbarian" is because....the location is Barbary St. That's fucking stupid. I don't see how this title fits this stupid movie.
This was completely spot on thank you so much, the beginning had so much potential even if they never went down stairs it would've been a better movie than the whole film, great review
I agree. I hate when horror movies try to make victims unlikeable in order to justify the treatment they receive. I much prefer horror movies that make you sympathize with the victims and root for their survival.
@@rainabustillos8498 that’s literally not true? keith is a great guy. just because a piece of media tackles how harmful the patriarchy is doesn’t mean it disregards that there are good men in the world. the movie is literally directed by a man, he doesn’t hate his own gender.
This is so much more articulate , structured than my hate filled out of the theater reaction lol. I’m glad I’m not alone in my utter hatred of this movie
I live for these reviews. None of the other review channels hold a candle next to you. I'm not sure what that actually means, but you are easily the best.
Once the lead went deep into the basement it was over for me. Then the guy went even deeper into the basement for no reason. Why didn’t the barbarian kill the homeless dude? He knew too much. Did she have super powers? What a mess of a movie.
This rant was like therapy for me 🤣. Everyone is blowing this movie to kingdom come. The writer/director tried to tackle like 100 issues and said mostly nothing about any of them.
Agreed on the silly ways things were set up. I do love the performances of all 3 main characters. Would watch again, at least one, just for that. It's beautifully shot, too, IMO. I did subscribe! I enjoy this kind of thing, and you're good at it.
So many dumb decisions by supposedly smart people. As she was going down the stairs looking for Bill, I was thinking, ok you deserve whatever you’re going to get. This movie really stereotyped itself. If you’re willing to suspend all logic and reason for this film, it’s fun.
What is it about the horror genre that causes people to forget how dramatic irony works? And did you miss the part before where she called the police and was informed that no units were available and without a ‘definitive’ crisis she’d have to wait?
@@calebhernandez681 I think for a flip, have the character do all the smart & logical things but things end up going wrong anyway. Make the viewer think your safe when really you’re not.
It was a stupid movie. The woman went back to save the man and he ended up throwing her off a balcony and she survives because the monster looking woman breaks her fall. Shortly after that the guy that threw her off the balcony comes down and apologizes and the monster looking woman squeeze his eyes out and it goes off!😂...so dumb! People that thinks this is a great horror movie just so desperately want a good horror movie that they'll say anything is good!😂😂
Thank god. I didn’t like this movie at all. Actually nobody in the movie theater liked it. Horrible! If this movie is considered one of the best horror movie in years, we are in trouble
Facts all the way….I totally hated it from the beginning and had two horrible jump scares within the first 30 minutes. That is when I knew there was no hope
Why did the door keep mysteriously closing by itself and locking? And Tess' door opens mysteriously while shes asleep, and the dude is coincidentally having a nightmare/making noises n shit. I thought it was some paranormal stuff at first, but nope. Hills Have Eyes in a BnB, but worse.
I had a feeling you weren't going to enjoy this movie. It's very similar to Malignant from last year that you despised. I adored both, personally. I just really appreciate that the film subverted my expectations and flipped them since horror movies are known for tired tropes. Not to say there are none here, but the attempt at something fresh should be applauded.
Yes it’s a lot like Malignant. Crazy ending, decent looking monster, best thing is they are both physical monsters not a ghost or a demon you can’t and won’t see. I love both movies
I like the first half and was willing to forgive some stuff but it just got so bad in the second half I already knew where it was going and just walked out
The best part was the flashback sequence with the original owner of the house. Needed to see much, much more of that as well as for the underground sequences to be shortened extremely. Hated Justin Long’s character so much all we needed was Keith and Tess to try and figure out what was happening intertwined with the flashbacks to the origin of the tunnels. A great premise but Justin Long’s character needed to vanish and the script needed to be re-done.
This film is about subverting your expectations. There are 100s of films already made about that you would have seen in the flash back. We REALLY don't need it...
I got so excited during the flash back because I love that actor (Richard Brake) as Doomhead in the movie 31 by Rob Zombie...but then they barely showed him or elaborated on the back story 😭
First act of this movie is amazing everything else is useless makes absolutely no sense and we’re literally just watching the dumbest human beings of all time do nothing.
I thought the biggest stretch was the characters mental capacity (more like lack of) and decision making. Each one worse than the last. The god awful predictability is a VERY close second! 👎
So happy to find this review. I just finished watching, went to look for reviews, and saw universal praise, which I find hard to believe. Plot doesn't pass even basic scrutiny.
when tess’ bedroom door opens, it’s the barbarian coming out at night like the homeless man says. the basement door closing is just because the door has faulty hinges.
Adam, I just watched a few Barbarian reviews in RUclips and you know what? You’re the first smart reviewer I found. All others they just love this stupid movie OMG. What’s happening? This movie is so dumb I can’t even find word to describe how dumb it is & people PRAISED it. You nailed it by the way. Nailed every one of my feelings when I was watching it I have to watch your video TWICE!! SO hate it!!!
I HATED this movie. They did no research on the actual city of Detroit (the suburbs are literally 10 minutes away, there ARE available hotels), the radio station and grocery store in the 80s flashback never existed, there aren’t houses that look anything like that, Tess parked facing the wrong way in front of the house, who tf is Marcus, why are doors opening, I literally wanted to scream in frustration multiple times throughout the movie and fun fact: I walked out early because I was so annoyed. I literally DID NOT CARE how it ended. When the police ignored her and wouldn’t go in the check the house, I got up and left. I should have just seen Top Gun again.
I did enjoy the movie for what it was, but all the unanswered questions, like what happened to the neighborhood? why is the guy living in the basement? And many more. My cousin and I discussed for a good hour on the drive home that this movie drove us insane lol.
Me and mom are still trying to figure out the house situation. The man living in the basement. Why the rented out in the bad area. Who the mother was. Like why the flashback of frank with the one women when you realize she's not even the " mothers" mother. Since she lived their 40 years and the lady was kidnapped roughly 40 years ago. So she was from a different victim way years before the flashback.
You watched a movie, enjoyed it, and then discussed it for an hour. This sounds like win win win to me... That's why I don't get that people hate unanswered questions so much (not saying you in particular butlook at many comments on this vid), like this little horror movie got you thinking enough to have an hour long discussion? That's a good a thing, a feature not a bug.
@@JToddles Lol what does real life have to do with a movie? Obviously I’ve heard of Detroit but as a Canadian I don’t usually find myself really keeping up to date with a city I’ll never have anything to do with.
How was this house able to stay so nice and kept up in that neighborhood? Why did the homeless guy stay around there if he knew about what’s happening? Why did he chase her inside the house and then instead of telling her to get out he left and didn’t say anything ?
^ This part bothered me the most, he’s known what’s been going on for 15 years and not one damn thing has been said? I’m assuming they “had” to shoot in Detroit to give that ole “a lot of murders happen in Detroit so the cops have better things to do” style which is so damn cliche it made my brain hurt. Also the inspectors/renovators of the house didn’t check the basement??
you missed a WHOLEEE lot. the house stayed nice and kept up because it was owned by a rich guy who was renting it out. cleaners and such were sent to the house to keep it nice whenever new people booked the place, which kept it tidy. the homeless guy stayed around there because there’s not a lot else you can do without a house, job, or car. all of his belongings were there. he also felt he was safe and had a duty to protect others, which leads me to your next point. he didn’t chase her inside of the house, he was running towards her to try and warn her and restrain her from going inside. she ran in because she was scared of him. also, he did tell her to get out lol. he screamed “stay out that d*mn house” through the door.
@@MrFreakazoid23 : At any given time, most police patrols will be on traffic duty, which makes money for the city, or are on domestic problem calls. They are NOT fighting dangerous criminals all day. Her call should have been a priority.
@@tummylicker3847 : The house had been empty for two weeks when the owner returned. That house could have been vandalized during that time and the yard would be overgrown. I doubt an AirB&B in that dystopian neighborhood would get many bookings anyway. The homeless guy lived in the area for 15 years and never told anybody about the murders he knew about. How was he trying to protect anybody? And the only reason he didn't chase her inside the house is because she shut the door on him. You can see his hands touch the panes of the door after she closed it.
Honestly? I loved Get Out but I'm getting super tired of this new "social commentary neo-horror" genre. It often comes off as pretentious, fails to actually make any actual valuable political commentary in its clumsy attempts to link fantasy to real world issues, and is just not entertaining in general.
I was going to list out all the annoying moments that made no sense but instead I’ll just point out the most annoying moment… When she first escapes the house and leaves Justin Long inside. And the first thing she says is “we have to go inside and save him.” You literally just escaped and didn’t save him!
Unfortunately I have to agree. I liked the tension, but so many things didn't make sense. Why would someone stay at an Airbnb in such a neighbourhood. One visit to Google Maps and I rent somewhere else.
The movie was so short and most of it was useless filler. Most of the “horrifying themes” were explained to the audience instead of letting them decipher them, even though they were thrown at us in a matter of minutes, and the things in the movie were so absurd suspension of disbelief was shattered. And it just plain didn’t scare me, it was a silly movie, people will really go nuts over a horror movie if it’s anything more than trash, so we praise mediocrity.
Finally a review I agree with. All of the other ones are praising it so much, I had to see it. For me it's a DVD release. Should not have made it to theaters. Seeing how this is a spoilers vid, I need to vent my gripes. Though, thank you for posting this. Apparently a medical convention fills all the hotels in Detroit, causing these two people to rent an airbnb with out checking the neighborhood around to see if it is in a safe area before renting. How is the basement door always locked? And how did mother open the door if locked? Would think if a person buys a house to make it a rental, they would check and clean up the house.... how did they not notice the huge rope out of the wall? Agree with where are all the cars from past renters? The transition of the Acts broke the momentum for me. Found it 9dd someone in Socal had one rental all the way in a deserted part of Detroit. They could have revealed the 3td act man better. Two times when the mother was down there, tess and the owner were loud and screaming. But when one got a gun and tess knew mother was outside they were quiet.... predictable one would shoot the other... Ugh... Holding back more rants... but thank you again.
Broo! For real being loud as hell for the first time entering sure....but Tess did see Mother outside so why wouldn't she be Loud the second or third time she went down.
Great review brother, I was excited to see this film and was intrigued and on the edge of my seat even understood the direction the director wanted to go at least I thought I did. The only thing worthwhile was the camera work that was 10/10 for me but this movie sucked! Guys out here calling it a masterpiece no way!
You point out flaws that I agree are in there however i disagree that its a bad movie. Thematically it synchs up throughout, it adds important characters without it seemingly meaningful, it uses preconceived notions to its advantage, and keeps its message "clear" throughout. Casting Bill was genius. While a great actor he is genuinely creepy in appearance due to his role as Pennywise and that ads to the suspense. When we the audience learn he's not the bad guy it flips our emotions perfectly. The sudden cuts from sheer horror to bright suburbia aren't there to add style but to add story. The "father" for instance immediately let the audience knew something far more sinister was at play and same with the addition of AJ 'Justin Long'. The style in which this was shot was great in my opinion. While this movie will not crack my top 10 horror movies, it is certainly worth the watch and does add to the catalogue of clever modern horror.
Just finished it and left speechless. I've heard all the positive things about how it is a crazy ride and an absolute shocker. Why did everyone lie to me??? This was by far the most boring and lame "horror" movie I've watched in a loooong time. It wasn't scary, not shocking nor tense, I was just rolling my eyes all the time

I loved the movie, but I’m real easy as a big horror genre fan. I’m quick to find the good. Massive plot hole that bothered me was who set up the air bnb. They allude to the undergrounders luring people in, but there’s no way they have email addresses and the ability to set up an air bnb account. If it was the rental management company, they would’ve had the clean up crew come by and notice all the luggage left and the house in disarray. Management company or AJ would’ve been notified. Not sure why, but this irked me as I thought the rest of the movie was quite palatable.

Thanks Jeanine! Yes, it's frustrating how much some people like this. I've asked people what they like exactly and the answer is always just "It's different". That means nothing to me!
@jeanine Hicks this is how I feel! I see all these folks praising the movie and I’m like “this was one of the dumbest movies I’ve ever watched”. It’s so dumb!
I honestly did not know i could laugh in a movie theater as hard and loud as I did! I would have laughed more but I had to physically stop myself so as not to be obnoxious to other movie goers. Justin Long is a really gifted actor with great range. Plus, he really commits to his character.
I finished this just a while ago. Holy crap, I never liked watching horror films because I get easily scared but this was an exception. The film relies on the character's 10 IQ decisions and brought themselves deeper and deeper inside the sh*thole. I ended up getting more frustrated than horrified because what the hell?
Thank the lord. Ive been yelling this for a week. I think it was the worst movie I've seen in theaters and I went with friends who hated it as well. But somehow every review on every site loves this movie. 92% on rotten tomatoes like wtf is going on. I thought I was taking crazy pills. Thank you for restoring my faith in humanity and reason again.
Like the amount of bad decisions made on this movie is insane. I would have a hard time going into a creepy tunnel for a best friend, let alone a creepy guy I met for a night. Then she gets out after being trapped for 2 weeks Tells the cops And decides to go back for AJ, a guy she met for literally 5 minutes. MAKE IT MAKE SENSE Aj dropping his gun was ridiculous AJ saying out loud, " Am I a good person who made a bad mistake, or a bad person" Then one minute later throwing Tess off the water tower. I have never been more disappointed in a movie and I truly think it is the worst movie I've ever seen in theaters. I CANT TAKE IT
If this is your worst, then you gotta see more movies. While the movie does have plot holes, most of it can be explained. It's understandable why some hate and some genuinely do consider it one of the better movies of the year. For instance; all the major bad decisions were inspired by a book called Gift of Fear. It goes over how women will sometimes notice major red flags and despite their "gut feeling" or intuition, they still continue doing whatever it is. Can also apply to men as well. To each their own though. I do agree though regarding the booking agency.
Yeah....I liked the movie as a comedy. The Justin Long scenes I loved. The rest was just jump scares. I too don't understand the hype like this movie re-invented the modern horror movie.
It’s so stupid, so many illogical decision given the scenario. How did the woman in the basement get out of the basement if the door cannot be opened from inside?!
@@AdamDoesMovies Yeah but your content is so great it makes my primitive mind think a tweak is all that's needed. Personally Adam Olinger is a great name now that your second channel is gone
Biggest stretch is when she wakes up the next morning and discovers the house is located in a dilapidated neighborhood and she decides to stay there anyways.
I thought the biggest stretch was the characters mental capacity (more like lack of) and decision making.
Each one worse than the last.

"No way anyone in their right mind would lose $75 and go to a safe place!" ??? Are you serious?!
You really think someone that saw/experienced what she just had: ..
1.the dilapidated, beyond crack-house neighborhood,
2.the surprised/foreboding warning she got from her new boss to not be there, PLUS.....
3.the crazed out bag guy chasing her into the house (not too mention her then getting locked in the basement/finding "the room!")
..would then say to themselves "but I paid a whole $75 so that's definitely worth risking my life over?! What kind of self worth does one have if they believe that 75 bucks is worth more than their own safety/life! And THAT'S the BIGGEST problem with this movie, and what the uploader & DNICE41 were saying, there WAS NO common sense; which is what kills the majority of this film!
Its a horror 'MOVIE'. Would love to see the version where she packs all her shit away and just leaves. Riveting!

But everyone on Twitter said it was amazing....
Do you really NEED to see it. It's hyper obvious what this guy's past is and what's on the tape. Showing it is such a tropish approach.
i promise no one needed to see whatever he did on those tapes. that part is heavily implied. fill in the blanks with any horrific act that can be imagined
What great concept? a underwater dungeon beneath a home oh so fucking original. And the villain is the most bland and forgettablehting i have ever seeen
Probably the greatest movie ever made
Omg the barbarian defenders/gatekeepers show up.. THE MOVIE IS TRAAAAAASH!!! Live with it
These are all the same criticisms I had.
And then she becomes the creep by taking a pic of his DMV card and admiring his photo later in the film
Malignant did it right barbarian is a parody. Do not waste your money on this awful story.
Also I remember why tess went into the basement.. she wanted a sh1t and couldn’t find toilet roll so that’s why she went into the basement to find some loo roll.. then the rest of the film is literal shit in a sewer 0.1/10 worst film of the year
Both movies were ridiculous & terrible!
Barbarian is magnificent
9. It took me 9 RUclipsrs to find someone who hates this movie as I do.
Sincerely, thank you.
Reading and watching so many positive reviews has been a true test of my sanity
@@itsmissinformation yeah it turned into a cheesy monster movie at the end.. but it wasn’t that bad
The bit where she jumps off the tower to save Tess?
That was the funniest fucking thing I've ever seen in a theater
I was thinking that’s not how gravity works..I know the creature was bigger and heavier than Tess but Tess was almost at ground level when the creature jumped..fucking laughable alright 😂

Funny origin story of the word “barbarian.” It comes from Ancient Greece word “Barbaros” for people who didn’t speak Greek, and it name actually comes from joke about how foreign words sound like gibberish like “bar, bar, bar, bar,” to the Greeks.
Oh like the mother in the film saying “bar bar bar” as “baby” you mean? Mmhm.
That's an interesting little tidbit.

@@jpeg204 Bad taste? This movie had so many plotholes. Its just not that good of a movie

It's a social commentary movie
@@ellamatthews8077 *political propaganda.
I have nothing to add as you said everything I felt about the movie. I was so upset I stayed up watching it when I could've been sleeping.
I guess calling it dumb fun is a way to accept this movie. I did have fun laughing at the movie and it was dumb
Amazing video. I agree with everything. It’s such a relief to see someone else felt the same way I did
I am just overall confused on what the plot was supposed to be.
I don’t know who you are sir but you speak the truth. This movie was garbage. The only thing scary about it is that people enjoy it.
Agreed 1000% !!!
She went to the basement for toilet paper!
Pretty sure the tunnels were pre-existing either from the Underground Railroad or prohibition. Some real tunnels exist in older Detroit neighborhoods and we have urban legends about people moving into older homes and discovering hidden tunnels.
Would have been cool to incorporate into the story
The movie sucked.
Yeah, this is the second time I’ve heard a viewer mistakenly assume the killer created the tunnels. No, those were railroad or mining tunnels. Apparently no one’s from areas where mining was a thing.
@@RPKraul no, the writer/director has said Frank made the tunnels.
@@pyenapple If that's the case, it's absolutely absurd. Where did he get his excavation equipment, or is the writer dumb enough to think you can do that with a shovel?

I just saw this movie. 2022 Wrong Turn. Wrong Air BnB
Our collective entertainment threshhold has been slowly worn down.
Same! I keep hearing nothing but positive reviews and I started to wonder if I watched the same movie.
It wasn’t a good metaphor though. Honestly it felt pretty fucking gross to a certain extent with the incest demon storyline. I didn’t appreciate it
@Alooof23 I do appreciate when they do it in an original film that is meant for their allegory.

And while I do like all the underlying themes, I can't give it that physics defying leap-save off the water tower.

....just going to say...wow. fucking wow. This movie was awful. I wasn't scared or uncomfortable. I laughed throughout the entire movie. The "victims" were so stupid. There were plenty of opportunities for the victims to escape or leave. The "metaphor" flopped. A great premise but Justin Long’s character needed to vanish and the script needed to be re-done.

when tess’ bedroom door opens, it’s the barbarian coming out at night like the homeless man says. the basement door closing is just because the door has faulty hinges.
Faulty hinges locking the door shut? Then working fine at other times? Lol
@@paulbryant8403 when did it work fine?
@@tummylicker3847 : The door worked fine whenever the barbarian lady wanted to come out of the basement at night.
I honestly thought I was the only one that hated it
I HATED this movie.
Bro I left the theatre too! After Bill got smashed into the wall I was tempted. Then after Tess drove her car in the house I left.
It's terrible. in a word. I want my rental money back.
“Let me back up this hate train just a little bit…” lol 🙂
I did enjoy the movie for what it was, but all the unanswered questions, like what happened to the neighborhood? why is the guy living in the basement? And many more. My cousin and I discussed for a good hour on the drive home that this movie drove us insane lol.
What happened to the neighborhood? Have you heard of Detroit?
@@apwill4765 lol I quite enjoyed the movie. Just got frustrated with the unanswered questions. I’m a nosy person lmao!
I didn't hate it but I agree with alot of your points.
I thought about seeing this but I think all of those things will drive me wild so THANK YOU for saving me a few bucks on tickets and snacks
Honestly? I loved Get Out but I'm getting super tired of this new "social commentary neo-horror" genre. It often comes off as pretentious, fails to actually make any actual valuable political commentary in its clumsy attempts to link fantasy to real world issues, and is just not entertaining in general.
I was going to list out all the annoying moments that made no sense but instead I’ll just point out the most annoying moment…
When she first escapes the house and leaves Justin Long inside. And the first thing she says is “we have to go inside and save him.”
You literally just escaped and didn’t save him!
It astounds me that people think this is a great horror film.
Adam, THANK U for this!! I was laughing non-stop thru this sh**tshow!
Maybe that’s because the movie is meant to be comedic for a lot of it, so really you’re just praising it
What is my motivaton to go into the basement. We are paying you. No, my charachter's motivation. Just go into the basement.
They’ve been praising alot of crap movies this year. It’s weird. A lot of overhyped horror this year
It wasn't scary, not shocking nor tense, I was just rolling my eyes all the time
I love this, malignant, terrifier, and X. Hope they make more movies like these.
I've never heard of Terrifier. Gonna have took into it now
Please don't compare this flaming pile of shit to great horror movies like malignant. They have nothing in common. Barbarian sucks!
You Have Great Taste, I Agree Completely
@@NasColdChainNCC - You must have the palate of a toddler.
Barbarian is an enjoyable experience for people who eat Ritalin like Pocky sticks.
This film is the devil's colostomy bag of intellect.
Terrifier is a garbage movie & X is overrated trash imo mate
I loved the movie, but I’m real easy as a big horror genre fan. I’m quick to find the good. Massive plot hole that bothered me was who set up the air bnb. They allude to the undergrounders luring people in, but there’s no way they have email addresses and the ability to set up an air bnb account. If it was the rental management company, they would’ve had the clean up crew come by and notice all the luggage left and the house in disarray. Management company or AJ would’ve been notified. Not sure why, but this irked me as I thought the rest of the movie was quite palatable.
You’re Hilarious! So glad I found your channel. I thought I was taking crazy pills or something because everyone loved this film, And I could not understand why and I still don’t understand. This movie is layered with dumb decision after dumb decision and it’s too distracting to ignore. I just couldn’t get past the Idiotic Choices from the characters.
I went to a drive-in movie so I had the luxury of laughing in my car 😂
I think I need movie therapy after that!
I'm only surprised that they didn't make the house out of gingerbread. I'm away to lie down ....
I finished this just a while ago. Holy crap, I never liked watching horror films because I get easily scared but this was an exception. The film relies on the character's 10 IQ decisions and brought themselves deeper and deeper inside the sh*thole. I ended up getting more frustrated than horrified because what the hell?
that was the real horror about this movie.
Omg thank you. This movie frustrated the crap out of me.
Wouldnt the interview lady and others like family, from their jobs, wonder what happened to the 2 first guest at that house ?
Thank the lord.
Ive been yelling this for a week.
I think it was the worst movie I've seen in theaters and I went with friends who hated it as well.
But somehow every review on every site loves this movie.
92% on rotten tomatoes like wtf is going on.
I thought I was taking crazy pills.
Thank you for restoring my faith in humanity and reason again.
Like the amount of bad decisions made on this movie is insane.
I would have a hard time going into a creepy tunnel for a best friend, let alone a creepy guy I met for a night.
Then she gets out after being trapped for 2 weeks
Tells the cops
And decides to go back for AJ, a guy she met for literally 5 minutes.
MAKE IT MAKE SENSE
Aj dropping his gun was ridiculous
AJ saying out loud, " Am I a good person who made a bad mistake, or a bad person"
Then one minute later throwing Tess off the water tower.
You’re not alone. It was extremely stupid. That naked thing breastfeeding made it laughable. Cannot believe the hype it’s getting.
@@gregg3744 If it made it laughable, how is it a bad thing when the movie is considered a Black COMEDY?
Yeah....I liked the movie as a comedy. The Justin Long scenes I loved. The rest was just jump scares. I too don't understand the hype like this movie re-invented the modern horror movie.
Because you’re one of the few people who disliked this movie as much as me .. I have no choice but to subscribe 😆
It’s so stupid, so many illogical decision given the scenario. How did the woman in the basement get out of the basement if the door cannot be opened from inside?!
While I want you to blow up (in subs) I love that your channel is a gem
Could... could it blow up and still be a gem? I'm working for peanuts over here!
Are you in love with the channel name or would you consider another rebrand down the road?
I think it's pretty on-brand and fairly easy to remember for people. It's not like any of the previous names were doing me any favors.
@@AdamDoesMovies Yeah but your content is so great it makes my primitive mind think a tweak is all that's needed. Personally Adam Olinger is a great name now that your second channel is gone
