I adopted my boxer around three and she lived until 8. We had five wonderful years, but when you consider that the first 6-12 months is training them to your routine and making sure all of the veterinary is up to date, it's a lot of money and work for a brief time and much grief when they die. Would I do it again knowing what I know now? -- Probably. She was an absolutely wonderful dog; just be realistic about what you're commiting to. Yes many boxers can live 10 to 12 years but I've seen many more who are gone by 7 to 8.

I had two Boxers who lived till 12, they were sisters from the same litter. I now have another two Boxers again from the same litter. Boxers are the most adorable dogs who love nothing more then being at your side. None of my 4 Boxers drooled and the two that i have now have never barked, they are 11 and love new people calling, there bums shake so much because there tails are docked but now it is illegal to dock there tails. I could not rate them high enough as pets.

Owned six previous boxers and all of them made twelve, one made nearly fourteen, i think better breeding has lengthened their lifespan considerably, Katie: number seven is gently farting by my side, another known boxer trait!.

The #1 dog, without fail and despite a little downside, is the Boxer. I have had four and one had been (unknown a the time of rescue) had been used in dog-fighting. Soooo very sad. I can see they would be famtastic opponents, but ANY DOG FIGHTING is CRUEL, CRUEL, CRUEL. I believe any animal fighting is abuse. My Boxers have been funny, loving, protective, smart and so much more. They are loyal, funny and loving beyond belief. The one we have now is so loving and fun, we continually dread l;osing her one day to her crossing the rainbow bridge. We have both caved to tears at times thinking of it. (Hell I still mourn the ones I lost 50 years ago. One word could not describe the superior dog these animals are. Family dog? PERFECT!!!! M.Simoens

You describe them as excellent hiking partners and then suggest that they can’t take weather extremes, have you ever been hiking?

I put a coat on her in the winter. In the summer I don't want to hike either. I would say she can take whatever I can take as far as summer months go.

@@thomasgiglia6260 that’s what I was thinking, I’m 63, surely my dogs can hike anytime as far as I can…
