I’ve owned both. This is extremely accurate from my experience. Both are great dogs and became true family members, the Doberman was more refined, the boxer was just fun loving. Both grew up as playmates with two little boys and loved those boys for 10 years. Both were protective and loyal but never aggressive.
@@badtrekee4348 Amen brother, you average healthy dog is prone to 5-7 diseases, types of cancer, stomach, eye/ear issues and boxers are prone to 14 different ones, truly have been name the unhealthiest breed of dog to ever exist. Besides they are hideous looking dogs and stink and shed and drool and are stupid and a nightmare to train, bad around kids, my ex got one from a breeder, show how stupid she is, you can find 10 boxers in any back alley dumpster behind any restaurant, hehehehahahateehehe. In three years, she has spent over $15k in veterinarian bills because the dog is always sick and it bit her son so bad, he needed 5 stitches in his arm, but that's nothing compared to how much money she has spent constantly repairing her horrid Tesla Y, piece of garbage. She is a princess of morons and I said the dog looks and acts like you husband babe. I sat for three boxers, twice and got bit, there was not a third time. Dobermans are not much better nor are pugs or pit bulls. Get a quality breed like a schnauzer or poodle (both the best dog breeds, hands down) or golden doodle, labradoodle, sheep dog, etc...
What ever Rick... Both are built and un-conditionally loved. Both suck at swimming as they are ALL up front and swim like a Submarine with a screen door.
We've had 9 boxers over the past 25 years, always 2 and often 3 at a time. Boxers routinely don't score well on intelligence tests, typically due to point deductions for not following a command. This doesn't mean they're not smart, but rather that they have a mind of their own and can be a bit stubborn, making a conscious decisions not to listen to you. We've never had an issue with this when it really counts, as they're very responsive to the emotions of their people, and when they hear importance or urgency, they quickly focus. When it comes down to problem solving and understanding language, boxers are quite clever, intuitive, and almost human-like in their interactions. They are fantastic family dogs, and have infinite patience with young children, which they adore. We are boxer bound and will never be owned by another breed.
EXACTLY. I just said some of the same things you said in your comment about the boxer, before reading yours. You aren't the only one whose noticed it in the boxer breed. Boxers are better at reading situations and owners emotions rather than learning a bunch of commands extremely fast.
Dobermans are pretty much the exact same way except they’re working dogs so they like having task which probably compels them to listen better but they can decide they don’t want to listen at any time lol
Oh yes..."Selective Hearing" mine has mastered. And you're right there very sensitive to our emotions. Mine can tell when I'm happy mad sad and sick and not feeling good.
I will never ever own another breed ever ! I'm the type of owner that only defends the boxer ! My past boxer was supper bright he learned over 10 commands in one setting and was service dog the. Trainer was like omg he passed every test the first time around 😀 so he became my service dog till he past 😭 and 6 years later I got another boxer and with a tail and ears like my past one , this one is stubborn but I'm really really really stubborn 😆 🤣 so I'm like hey loki mom says sit so dang gone it you better sit or ill give you my stink eye 😆 🤣 he hates that so he sits and shakes in one setting and non verbal ether I teach my dogs sign and they do it 😀 boxers are supper smart and funny and loyal and great dogs ! I say there God's Right hand dog vs other dogs are 2nd rate boxers are royal God dogs ! My boxer I have now is training to be my service dog as well and even tho he's stubborn at times when it comes to him working he behaves 😀 after all Boxers were originally breed to work 😀 I even bike with him and Rollerblade with him and speed walk and he's focus even if a cat crosses the path he looks to me for guidance and I look at him like nope keep going so he does 😀 oh and my past one and present one could run along side me as I bike with no leash so that's smarts. Both the dogs know and knew who the Alpha is and who rough houses with them and kiss them and give them big bear hugs and told them and tells them there the best breed ever and that there supper studdly handsome then I squish there face and kiss it 😆 🤣 they just will sit there letting me do this 😆 🤣 then they give me a kiss back then I wrestle them and they box me 😆 🤣
Sounds like my Aussie. She didn't score well on the video either and she's the same way. Too smart for her own good and I have to keep a close eye on her for that very reason.
Our beloved brindle boxer is a male who will be 5 years old in a few days. I've had dogs of different breeds for most of my life. I've never had one that I understood and was easily able to communicate with like him. Hands down the best dog that i've ever had the pleasure of living with. i understand whatever he wants or needs by his vocal hints, his postures and his mannerisms. I doubt that I will ever have another breed in my lifetime.
I've owned a few boxers over the years. Definitely my favorite breed. I've always loved Dobermans but haven't had a lot of experience around them. With that being said, the intelligence level on boxers are much higher than a lot of "experts" give them credit for. Good video btw
I was thinking the same thing. I've owned both. In terms of trainability, the Dobermans were easier. But in terms of overall intelligence, they are much closer than that 40 place separation. I've sat & watched my Boxers actually problem solve & figure things out. I currently have 3 & my female watched us opening the storm door & figured out how to stand on her hind legs & push the release for the latch by the time she was 3 months old
1000% agree, and I had from pitbulls to rottweiler even Shar pei. And boxer surprised me o. Intelligence but the most is that actually tell will show you ther feelings at the moment whit a single expression.
This is a very well done comparison. Never owned (or was owned) by a Doberman, but we're on our third Boxer. We first got a male, named 'Buddy' (AKA 'Bubba') as a pup, and when he was about a year old, we got a female pup, named 'Haily' -- they were inseparable. We were absolutely in love with those two sweet dogs. Haily stole my heart. Buddy died at 10 yrs. of congestive heart failure, and it was so hard on Haily to have him gone, but she was a real trooper and live to be 13 Years. After Haily passed we were so heartbroken that we went for almost 2 years without another Boxer (we wouldn't have wanted any other breed at that point). I still get teary eyed when one of Haily's photos pops up on my computer screen. Then one day my wife came in and showed me a photo on her phone of the cutest puppy I have ever seen -- a fawn Boxer with white muzzle, white chest, and four white feet -- we picked him up from a breeder in North Texas. We named him 'BJ' ('Bubba Junior') and he shares our home with our big orange cat, 'Max'. BJ is now over 6 years old, and we are getting pretty up in years, so sadly, we know he will be our last Boxer. I would not trade all the laughter and memories we have of these dogs for all the money on earth. They have been one of God's great blessings in our lives.
I'm a boxer owner - I have a female that is 2.5 years old and about 55-60 lbs and muscular/lean build - Overall I'd say this assessment is pretty accurate. She's extremely playful and a great family dog for my kids. However I would say her protective side is much higher than I expected or what this video would describe. There have been a couple instances where my dog is "not messing around" when it came to another dog or human. She was/is a very effective deterrent.
Keep socializing her. That's a lifelong commitment for getting a boxer, I had one that became increasingly aggressive towards other dogs, especially once she hit 8 years old. There might've been other factors, but while we socialized her properly as a puppy, we didn't keep up with that. Socialization with both dogs and people is a consistent need in order for them to have the right temperament.
Agreed. As playful as my boxer is, theres been a few instances where I’ve said to myself, “ok, I think he’ll react EXACTLY like he needs to when or if that time comes” They just seem to have great instincts
Without hesitation….boxers….fun loving, loyal, affectionate …. A wonderful family dog and companion. If needing a guard dog, Doberman’s are certainly more intimidating.
Growing up, my favorite childhood dog was our Dobie. So sweet! Chose a boxer once I had children because, although their personalities are very similar and both are extremely family-friendly, Dobie’s are more likely to aggressively defend their family. Boxer’s tend to make noise and get “between” their people and the perceived danger, while Dobies are more likely to “go after” the perceived danger. Children often run and chase each other while screaming, and could confuse a dog. Was worried if Dobie went after a child during confusion, I might be forced to put the dog down which would absolutely destroy me. I love both of these breeds!
My Boxer got between me and another aggressive Pitbull. Luckily both were leashed, but I was impressed that my boy immediately got in front of me and chested up while the pitbull lunged at us and left his owner unprotected. My boys instinct was to protect me first, not attack. Such a good boy.
You are so welcome, Missy! Glad you were able to get some nuggets of information from this video! Love hearing about your experience, too - that's super valuable! Don't be a stranger!
Omg I have a boxer now but want a Doberman, would you mind telling me how they behave towards eachother? Are they same sex? Is there a substantial age gap? Do they mesh well in family life? Thanks!
First breed, due to my deceased father who had bred them, were two Dobermans who died in my teen years. Followed by a Boxer and Rottweiiler, now have a Stafforshire Bull Terrier. All dogs that I owned are in my heart today. Could not favour one over the other.
I have had two boxers, the first one a female and the sweetest dog you could ever have. She loved my two young children and was quite protective of them. She had a litter of 5 puppies of which I sold 4 and kept one male. He never got out of the puppy playful stage though. We loved them both so much and I am thinking of buying another female. I really miss her sweet, gentle ways.
My boxer that passed away on Christmas eve last year was 8 and he never left the puppy stage. People were surprised when I told the he was 8 and not 2 or 3. I love boxers.
I was walking Sammy a few days ago and a guy was walking towards us. He was about 30 feet away and said to me "If that dog comes near me, I'm going to kick its teeth down its throat." A couple of replies played out in my head "That's the worst thing you could do.", "Go ahead.....if you want to lose your foot.". I told him "This is a Doberman. Not a Poodle. If you attack him, he's not going to run away. He'll fight back." The guy gave it a second thought and chose the right option. He crossed the street. I never stopped walking and wasn't about to cater to some a-hole like him.
Dog ignorant people are the worst. I always give people the right of way when walking my dog, I'd walk on the street when they are passing by because I just don't have a clue what they can do to my dog. I know my dog is under control and will listen to me but there's every type of asshole outthere waiting for an opportunity to be stupid.
I am a tiny woman with two full grown Dobermans. If people annoy me I tell them I am not sure if I can control my dogs (which is not true but the a-holes don’t need to know). I love your answer, did the right thing! 👏
I’ve owned one of each and have to go with boxers. Boxers are more difficult as puppies by just pure mischief but they are also more loving and personable they are like having another human around while a Doberman more of an impressive dog. Both are wonderful. I just love my boxer
Absolutely right about how human boxers are. My boy Winston has so much personality. I must say that Dobermans are, IMO, the most beautiful dog breed and I know they have a reputation for protection, but Boxers are my only choice. Too much fun.
Personally I have a boxer myself and can honestly say, I was never after a boxer, never even considered getting a boxer just wasn’t a breed I was interested in, I was looking for a rottie but puppies were way to expensive at the time I was looking, that’s when I stumbled on a ad on Facebook of a woman selling boxer puppies, I took one look at the puppy pictures and fell in love, needles to say I’ve had my boxer now for 10 months so he is still very much in his puppy stage but has been the best decision I’ve ever made ever since I got him he has been so Affectionate and caring towards me constantly just wanting to play I always describe him as a big goofy muscle because he is so muscular and big for his age with still a while to grow I’ve also found that training is super easy with him picking up commands almost instantly and he is so gentle arround children it’s almost like he knows the size of them human and then adjusts his manners to how he needs to be arround then he is just perfect in ever way and can confidently say I will be getting another boxer in my lifetime. I can’t comment on the Doberman as I’ve never owned or know anyone who has one but just thought I’d comment as was seeing a lot of posts about the Doberman but my boxers need some love too 😊.
I love love love the Boxer Breed so much i have had two. One flashy fawn and one flashy brindle. Both very loving and one more affectionate than the other. One was a big cuddler the other was more independent one was fixed the other not so you can imagine the one that wasn't fixed was the more independent one lol. I love this breed because they show their emotions in their face, they are goofy and silly and very loving in nature. They truly think they are human and can understand your eyes and ready your emotions. They are the most emotionally intelligent dogs for sure.
Owned both breeds, agree with most comments both intelligent dogs with the Doberman more protective but for a fun family dog I’m drawn to the Boxer. One other factor though is that I think Boxer are prone to more health issues.
smartest / best dog i ever owned and ive owned many was a doberman, my first was a one in a lifetime dog as i breed them and my 1st stood way above my others ,wonder if he had uropean bloodline ,many years ago impossible to find out now ,kinda dog ill never forget ,like being with another person smart !
Sadly the health part is true. I was lucky to have a very healthy boxer that lived up to more than 13 years but I think if anything is their default that would be their short lifespan. Your heart gets broken too soon.
Loved your comment so much! I like Dobbies, but I don’t know if one would be too much for me as a first dog. What would your surely wonderful experience suggest?
@@antoniobacic5674 Dear Antonio, thank you for your nice comment. I got my first Dobie girl when I was 15. Didn’t even think it twice. Yes it was all hard work but again, you make wonderful memories with your furry baby. At the end of the day it’s about your personality: what do you want for a dog and how much effort (= time, money) can you make? I myself am crazy about my two Dobies and five cats. They are the center of my life. And my husband of course 🤣
We've clocked our Boxers at 35 mph. Mine's 14 1/2 years old and an AWESOME dog! I probably wouldn't have gone on half the walks I did if it wasn't for her "encouraging me" with her "Whoowhoowhoo" and jumping around trying to lead me towards the door ☺️❤️ Yes very expressive and can somewhat tell you what they want or need. And she's a GREAT Companion ♥️ Maybe I need a Doberman Boxer cross for my next one.
Oh wow, I have both a Boxer AND a Doberman right now, and a second boxer of mine passed away last year. I agree with about half of the points made in this video, but I think it really comes down to the temperament of the boxer or dobie’s line they came from. My two boxers ARE definitely clowns, suspicious of others, and definitely able to tell me right away if I can trust someone or not. By the time they were 1 years old they grew out of the naughty puppy behavior. My older boxer had very good protection instincts but he literally never used them unless someone near me was actually a threat. My younger boxer does not have protective instincts, she’s all bark and no bite. My boxers are very sweet, and have always been okay with just relaxing with me, even at the very young puppy stage. My dobie on the other hand, he’s working line, and 10 months old currently and does not know how to relax, try as I might to teach him calming behaviors. I can tell, he tries so hard to please but is SERIOUSLY a Velcro dog and is staring into my soul as I type this, and whining at me. He has to be doing something constantly. When my boxers are exhausted, they take a break, but this Doberman does not.... he keeps going. I am dying for the day he will become “stoic” as I read the Doberman to be. Boxers are definitely clowns, very sweet, yes they’re expressive, they’re just as smart as the Doberman but in different way I think. My Doberman is smart and it gets him into trouble, my boxers are smart and I trusted them a lot faster. People in general are definitely afraid of my dobie, but just as afraid of my male boxer who was 95 lbs, and TALL, and I didn’t tell anyone he was a marshmallow. In general, for where I’m at right now I think the boxers are a better breed if you don’t want to deal with a little “viper” teeth puppy stage (bite inhibition took forever, and so did house breaking with my dobie), and a psychopath around at all times. My boxers were a lot calmer as puppies, and I could teach them a command 25 times and it was solid for life, my dobie, I tell him an infinite amount of times and he still discovers a loop hole to get around to disobeying me.
Boxers have fun loving, affectionate personalities. They are extremely loyal to their owners and one of the best family dogs. I want a companion/pet. If you need a guard dog, Doberman’s are certainly more intimidating. I must be fortunate, because I have never had a boxer that drooled, but one did blow bubbles when a savory treat was offered. Boxers all the way.
If you have a pair of Boxers, it is common for the female to be up front and make a lot of noise while the male stands back and watches. If things get serious, he will join her and make a formidable team.
I have read Boxers rank 90 out of 100 for adaptive learning with up to 40x, as in how many times it takes to learn a command, but Boxers rank super high in intuitive intelligence. Once they learn to read their person, which comes early to them, they are extremely perceptive about situations. My two pups, females, almost 1 yr and the other almost 10 months, they both exhibited guard dog behavior ( standing back from door, watching, big dog barking) at an early age. I think around 8 mnths.
I grew up with two dobermans and had a boxer as an adult. My take is that breed descriptions can have some degree of accuracy but like with people, they are stereotypes and dogs are also individuals. Our dobermans were both female, mother and daughter, and couldn't have had more different personalities. The mother always had her eye on you, recognized my father as her alpha, and would show teeth to me and growl at me at times. The daughter was the calmest most playful, loving, dog. The mother died of cardiomyopathy and the daughter developed severe hip dysplasia both at 10 years old. I wouldn't have dobermans in a house with children based on my experience, too easy to turn. My Boxer was high energy until 3 years old, always followed you around, loved being with people, never showed any type of aggression. I am afraid to get another one because this dog was so perfect. My Boxer was also a couch potato so again, breed descriptions are stereotypes, they always speak of a boxer needing to run outside or they will be destructive but my Boxer never chewed a thing. Counter surfed, oh yeah! He lived until almost 12 which is far longer than the average boxer life of 8 years because they tend to develop cancer or the cardiomyopathy. He was a puppy mill dog (I know better now) so the cancer wasn't bred out of him, he just didn't get it. He eventually got both dilated cardiomyopathy and hip dysplasia at eleven years old. Seems to be common in the working class. The doberman was great house protection, I think the boxer would let people in the house to play if he could, lol. I think I heard him bark five times in 12 years and it was more of a questions, woof? The Doberman that had the tough personality was by far the smartest dog I have ever met. So there you have it! Depends on the individual dog beyond broad breed descriptions. Both are great choices but I do lean towards the Boxer.
I am on my 2nd brindle boxer and I love the breed. Smart, funny, brave, snuggly, and if threatened very brave and intimidating. My Atreyu is a thicc boy he is almost 90 lbs.
I've owned several of both through the years. They are both amazing breeds. But for me, the Boxer is my #1. I currently have 2 purebred & 1 Boxer/Dogo Aregentino mix. And it's because of exactly what you said. I just adore the goofy, puppy-like antics that they carry for so long. My Male is almost 5 years old, weighs 88 lbs & is still a big puppy with the family. I tell people that it's like sharing a house with giant toddlers who never grow up! Lol But they can also turn off that silliness in a snap if they feel that their humans are being threatened.
Doberman is my pick. I absolutely love them and have seen the loyalness of this breed first hand as well as being able to train her in as little as one repetition. She is very loyal and extremely protective of our grandkids and our pregnant daughters. I don’t know that I would ever have another breed.
What?? Is there any OTHER breed of dog besides a Doberman? Ha I think not. Had Dobermans since the early 70's! After seeing the intelligence of my first Doberman my parents got their own and several friends who were terrified of the Doberman breed got Dobermans as well after meeting my first who was an all black (at that time no one wanted an all black Doberman). These dogs are smarter than their humans! Just love them! Yes, I am very biased, but then have years of proof to back that up! Glad to see your back with the videos, John. Great Job!
I chose a boxer in 1991 my 1st Dog because I was a professional world class boxer at the highest level and let me tell you my Boxer Trained with me in all types of weather with my roadwork, He encouraged me and motivated me to keep pushing because I seen the endurance that he had and love of training. Very intelligent, loving, playful, and had a hi level of protection. I would have choose another Boxer but I promise him he would be the only Boxer in my life because I did not want to replace him, I loved him so much.
The Doberman is so regal...mine was such a beauty but she was so human! She would have talked if she could have❤...ran like the wind...Porsche Lynn...you stole my heart...rest in peace my beautiful girl🙏
Love this video! As a lifetime boxer owner, I can be a bit biased as well. ☺️ Always loved the look and build of dobies though!! Most points you’ve made on boxers I have found very accurate. One part I wanted to speak on from your video: “Boxers- Loyal dog who focused on their owner and extremely accepting of others.” As each boxer can be different, I’ve found all 4 of ours have always shown a very protective nature, and are cautious to accept others until they receive a communicated sense with the family that the threat is safe. While in comparison, our family lab was extremely accepting of others, and knew no stranger! Love your videos and content, thanks for sharing! 🐶
What a great video! I went through this decision 35 years ago when I got my first boxer, it was a really hard decision but I’ve been with them ever since. Every time I see a Doberman I’m in awe of how regal they look and would love to spend time with them to see their personalities.
Before I got my Dobie baby, I was actually stuck between the Doberman and the Boxer. I’m so glad I went with my big boy three years ago!! I appreciate his stoic ways (he’s similar to my personality and attitude lol) and I also appreciate his goofy and cuddly ways too! He’s perfect!
Doberman is my breed!! I had this breed for the past 40 years, they are the most loyal energetic and protective breed ever, they look so majestic!! Love love this breed!
You are spot on with your description of the boxer. My boy will be 9 in may. The first “boxer” my parents owned (before I was born) turned out to be boxer/Doberman. Seems the neighbors Doberman made his way into the yard. They loved him dearly. ✌️💕
I can see where these 2 breeds were your final choices. So similar as far build , family loving , grooming etc. while the dobie is a little more intimidating, the boxer has intimidating looks as well. Both dogs are energetic and don’t shed like a GS or aren’t as big as a mastiff. Enjoyed this comparison !
When I was choosing a dog to raise with my kids I was limited by two factors. My oldest son was allergic to most dogs and because I was renting, a Doberman wasn't a possibility. After extensive research I settled on Standard Poodles. Shave them down and structurally what you have is very similar to a Doberman. They are whip smart and protective if necessary. What's amusing is that when you travel with them and tell the motel you have a poodle they have no hesitation in saying yes. Picturing a toy poodle, I'm sure. When walking the dog the next day, seeing my very large, poodle they'd point and ask "what kind of dog is that!? (my dogs were on average 26 inches and 50 to 60 lbs.) I'd smile and say "that's my poodle."
I have a Pit and an Aussie. My Aussie is stubbon but a great working dog (I have horses). My pit is protective but a big weinie. My Blue Tick Hound Mix scared everyone with good reason, and he was also a ESD. He took part of my soul with him to Rainbow Bridge. When I look at a Dobie, I see him in their demeanor and their eyes. I've been around Boxers, no interest. I worked at Home Depot for a time, and a Veteran came in with a Dobie ESD, and told me about a time he was about to take his own life, and with tears in his eyes, he told me how his Dobie put her paw on his gun and lowered it to his lap. The seed was sown then in my heart, and then I saw Ruby, and the rest is history. I have always been afraid I couldn't handle one. Your videos give me hope and the confidence that I could learn to be successful with a Dobie. Rock on. 💕🐾
I agree with your summary. I haven't owned a Dobie but have known people that have and they do seem stoic, elegant and smart. We've had several boxers and well, I don't think they ever grow up. Both females that we had matured about a month before passing. But I don't think they were actually mature their health just declined rapidly and they couldn't be their goofy selves. The boys? yeah funny too. They are very expressive and loving. And that's why I love their breed. If I was looking for mainly protection, I think I would go the dobie way for the reasons you outlined.
If i had to choose from Boxer and Doberman - I would get another Boxer! they are great with Kids! very playful! and very Vigilant! does not like strangers.
Another highly informative video that covers all of the relevant points in good detail. I always learn something new when I visit this channel. The content is thoroughly researched, well organized and masterfully illustrated. Thank you Doberman Planet!
I have the same taste. I owned a Doberman. It is my favorite. I added a boxer. Their energy level made them play together a day round. Boxer found shelters to take short breaks and breath before continuing the fun play. I love them both. However, Doberman always comes at the top of my favorite list.
The Boxer is currently in the guard and protection group, maybe not with the same intence of the Doberman. And the bite force of the Doberman is similar at the Boxer, there is not as much difference as you mentioned. I have had both breeds and although the Boxer may seems more silly, but at serious moments it's totally a different dog. And although I do not support dog fighting, but the Boxer has more aptitudes when it comes to defending himself. I am glad that you have made this video, very interestig and entertaining. Love both breeds by the way!!! Thanks!.
I have watched your videos since we got our dobie almost three years ago. Everything you say is really true. It amazing how our Archie is just like your dog and comments. I have very slight disagreement: the dog is never without energy! True he sleeps and rests, but he will get turned on about playing if I just look at him. Absolutely a great dog! He also makes us laugh much of the time because of his facial expressions. Makes our empty nest home very happy! Thanx!
I've always had poodles. They're quite smart as well, super trainable, very versatile, and family oriented. They need to be groomed, but they don't shed - they will get stickers and stuff caught in their curly coat though. Definitely not protection dogs, but they have a good bark (standards anyway) and will alert when appropriate. They're also pretty good swimmers, and enjoy being active with whatever activity you or your family are doing - they can also be trained to velcro themselves to their bed / pillow while company is over, just as if they were in a crate.
I actually never knew that you were in the same place that I was at one point in time! Boxers and Dobermans are my two favorite breeds of dog, but with my current family dynamic and lifestyle I went with the boxer. I really liked how you broke down the differences and set them all out here, and I definitely liked your choice of words when it came to using fearless for the doberman and brave for the boxer: my boxer is definitely brave, sometimes too brave, but God help him if you bring out the laundry basket or try to walk past a box or tote cart on the sidewalk...he will pull as hard as he can to get away from them regardless of the commands given...but I love the goofiness of the boxer and that's why I went with him. The doberman will be the next family member when my boxer passes (which hopefully won't be soon because he only just turned 2). Thanks again for the review!
Hum depends, my boy was an absolute fearless brute ^^' The kind to jump out of the window without knowing how high it is (he scared us shitless once) or to play corrida with the local cows and bulls, I don't recall ever seeing be scared.
I’ve never felt closer to have a real conversation with it any other animal then a boxer. They truly do speak well with facial and body movement that humans can understand. Have had boxers my whole life but a Doberman is definetly in my future.
There was a movie, I believe it was called "City Heat", starring Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds. Both actors were portraying their typical characters, ie Eastwood was like he's Dirty Harry and ie Reynolds was playing the good ol'boy Gator or the Bandit. So I think of a Doberman as Eastwood and a Boxer like Reynolds. 🙂
I have to boxers and mine are not accepting to others especially strangers..and they are very protective over me and my family so some of the things about boxers I don't belive to be fully true...I guess it depends on how close you are with your pet..and boxers have bad separation anxiety.
Being a boxer owner for the last 18 yrs what attracts me to them is their interaction with the family unit not just in work but in play. My wife often refers to them as huminals.
I loved my previous Boxer (Ali) for 11 years, extremely fun & silly. He started to mature very late & remained a goofball his whole life. He was pretty well trained but def had his stubborn moments on multiple occasions. R.I.P. ALI 🐾
We had 1 Boxer 12 yrs till her Rearend gave out but she was Extremely friendly and Easily trainable. She stayed off of furniture and stayed very easily within an UN FENCED YARD. She was a Very Calm yet Playful FAMILY MEMBER yet was great with family People she had never met and Mostly was Phenomenal with kids Any age. We never got another dog after her as she was So good we could not expect another dog Like her!
Thank you for making a well balanced video. I have been trying to find breed comparisons for these 2 and have only found them from Doberman owner POVs. I think boxer owners know that once you have one, you never go looking for another breed. I have had 2 boxers, looking after a dobie. I appreciate the Dobie's intelligence, but find they are a bit dull because they are blindly obedient. I love the negotiation a boxer will engage in. They are fun and never take things seriously until they have to. Do not underestimate a boxer's guarding instinct. Mine literally saved my life and attacked an intruder who entered my home. I have never seen such panic in a human. Unlike a Dobie, however, a boxer will immobilise as opposed to shred, leading to much less liability for the owner.
I wanna say thank you for making videos like this. Dobermans have been my dream dog for quite a few years, and I feel more prepared to own one with the information you've provided.
I have 2 boxers and found your channel when looking for dog training and care advise. Now, I can't help but wonder what your channel would've been had it be "Boxer's Planet" lol
@@tinakilburn4270 / yup!...that's a shepherd for you...they will protect you with their life as with many other dogs...but some dogs are more eager than others...and dobes are cool too...my first dobe was a firecracker...i swear, she always seem to sleep with one eye open...my shepherd was a bit aloof and tend to be a one person dog, smart as a dickens and follow me everywhere and very protective...even mowing the lawn, he would walk beside me...both are great dogs...i wished they lived a little longer...
Train-ability makes a good slave, not an intelligent animal. Boxers are very stubborn and are very likely to not do what you ask unless you make it worth it for them. This does not mean they do not understand the command. It just means they are thinking about whether they want to do it.
I confess that I found that in this personal presentation and comparison of two breeds of dogs the presenter immediately disqualifies himself from any experiential observations on the Boxer dog by stating that he has never owned one. The observations he makes on the Boxer breed are founded upon the experience of others and I presume internet searches. I am reminded of the words that were once inscribed above the entrance of the Metropolitan Police Dog Training School which read something like, “A handler gets the dog he deserves.” and generally I have found this to be true. I have owned and trained both breeds: my own dogs and those of others. I got my own Dobermann from a Rescue Centre. He was 18 months old and had already had three homes, each of which he had destroyed by tearing up the furnishings. I took him home with me and I never had any problem at all. Six months later he qualified Utility Dog in Working Trials and went on to qualify Police Dog taking second place before a crucia ligament injury curtailed further competition. He was gentle, “velco loyal”, an excellent tracker, good with the children and their rabbit. Dobermanns, like all Working Breeds, need physical and mental stimulation and exercise. The Dobe is quieter in nature than the Boxer but like the Boxer is best trained using positive motivational techniques/marker training - force, heavy-handed corrections will lead to problems. The downside for the Dobermann in this particular case was separation anxiety when he had to be kennelled for our holidays - he hardly ate and licked his flanks but I am a fan of the Dobermann. Due to Wobbler Syndrome I lost him at 9 years of age. My current dog, a Boxer, I got as a puppy and started retrieve training and tracking (conditioning) at 10 weeks. Very loyal dogs, excellent Watchdog. Their playfulness presents a great opportunity for training. They want to work and when given a task they do not give up - searching for victims or property, tracking, manwork, they will work until they drop usually because of their too short muzzle leads to overheating. The Show Dog world continues to ruin the health of our working dogs. I find them more physically affectionate with the family. More determined and courageous than the Dobe in Manwork. Like the Rottweiller it’s almost impossible to intimidate Boxers in any test of courage. Currently working the Boxer in Ringsport where its much too shortened muzzle is a disadvantage not only in capturing a quick bite on limbs or legs when the homme l’attaque is intent on dodging the bite but also in dealing with working in temperatures above 22C. Training the Boxer to bite in the groin area for Ringsport is one way around this problem. Both breeds are very clean, very sensitive to their owners. I have seen inummerable untrained Dobes and Boxers; because of their latent power, energy and exuberance they too often present an image of uncontrollability. Which one is the harder to train? That depends on the experience of the handler: “A handler gets the dog he deserves.” Which do I prefer? Both breeds have health issues thanks to the vanities of those in the Show Dog world but for me I would have either, they can both make excellent companions and working dogs BUT they need positive motivational training and something to do or you will have problems and above all the owner handler must be well motivated, self disciplined and consistent if not, you will get the dog you deserve. And finally, how can one state that one prefers one breed over another without having had the experience owning or at least training the other?
I owned both breeds. The boxer is immensely intelligent, however this breed exhibits 'intelligent disobedience'. In other words, they 'think' about the command and decide if they want to do it or not, and I love them for that!!! Both the boxer and dobe were to be euthanized for behavioral issues. I couldn't let that happen and took them in (to be clear, I had the boxer first, dobe came later). The dobie was so loving!!! After I got him home, I gave him a stuffed toy, plenty of food and lots of cuddles! He never exhibited behavioral issues with me. However, we had a neighbor who hated dogs, so I thought it best to have him professionally trained, just in case. This was back in the 80s. I called this dobe breeder who resided in Illinois, House of Hoytt. GREAT individual!!! He came over and helped me. As he was recovering from a stroke, I commend him for helping us out!!!! He was greatly impressed by our dobies size and wondered if it was one of his. After each lesson, Mr. Hoytt would sit in the big chair and watch the "A-Team", before heading back. In truth, the boxer is my breed, we just fit. However, dobes are an amazing breed, full of love, loyalty and devotion. I miss them both, loved them equally. When looking for a dog to adopt, please consider those who have been damaged or the elderly ones. If you give them a chance, you might just find you've adopted an angel.
*Once Boxer, always Boxer!* Yeah and that number of the Dr for Boxer intelligence doesn´t add up. My grandparents were big big breeders and trainers of Boxer and had a 100 trophies of all kinds of things. If they are cleanly bred and trained they can do pretty much everything.
You should also mention as far as bite goes. a Boxer's jaw is built to bite down and hold it's opponent until their owner gets to them. Where as the way the Doberman bites is more like multiple scissor types of bites.
I am a brindle boxer mom. I'm a wheelchair user but I'm still very active, agile and independent. My boxer Silah, definitely is a great fit for me. She is my only companion and I agree with your description of their personalities. I had mini doberman before her and the size factor was an issue. I also considered actual doberman but their stoic demeanor makes me uneasy. I like that boxers are more expressive and easier to read. It makes me be 100% more confident around her than with other breeds. My brindle is a 9 year old female. I plan on having a new boxer pup to be trained as a service/emotional support dog for me. I was not in a suitable economic position to have her professionally trained for those purposes. She still manages to do a fantastic job instinctively. She means alot to me.
Awesome video! Great content and as a current owner of both, I can attest that the information holds true. Both amazing breeds in their own right and love getting to enjoy their similarities and differences!
Great video on comps. On my 3rd Boxer, had one Euro and two American/Canadian. Will never own another breed. Just love them, trained all three myself and all were extremely easy and smart. Hand signals, protection and two females even dog litter box or location trained. My current one is 9 and still has a lot of energy. Dobermans are beautiful as well, but Boxer lover for life.
I have had many many boxers in my life. I have been around Dobeys as well. Your commentary was spot on. Boxers have had their original purpose bred out of them and are a more domesticated bred. They are probably safer with kids. Very protective of them but much less dangerous. There are still breeds of them that are more European when trained are very effective in police work but for home protection I would go with a doberman.
Both breeds have a lot of similarities. I will sum it up to this. If you have a strong sense of humor and love to laugh and do not need to be in total control of your dog's every move, get a Boxer. If you are a more serious person who prefers a more stoic dog who is also very obedient get a Dobie. Both breeds are velcro dogs who live for their owners, but one is a clown and one is more serious. Think Abbot and Costello. lol
I'm a Boxer guy forever! The Dobermans I've been around have been just fine. More comfortable around the female of the breed they seemed to have a bit calmer vibe to them than the males. Funny story (not really). My father was a guest of Adolf and friends in the early 40s and had some interaction with the Doberman breed. S.O.P at Lufftstalag 1 was to have Dobermans roam inside the camp at night off leash while German Shepherds patrolled outside the camp on leash. My father saw the Doberman breed inflict quite a bit of damage to many compatriots during his stay in the camp. Needless to say he was not a big fan of the breed but was a huge dog lover. His breed of choice was the Boxer and we had several while growing up. I have had my own since reaching a semblance of maturity and they will be my only breed! My sister at one point brought home a beautiful little Dobi puppy and was playing with it in our front yard. My father came out saw the pup and said that if she didn't get the puppy out of his yard he would not be held responsible for his actions! We of course were in shock! Incredibly out of character for our father the dog lover! The physical and emotional reaction was very scary for everyone. The next day he sat us all down and apologized for the way he responded and explained the reasons for it. He also said there were no bad dogs just bad owners. He just happened to have a history with a breed that probably had the worst owners in the history of the world! Dobermans are a great breed! I'm just hooked on Boxers.
No question that the Doberman is a superior breed especially if they need a loyal companion dog. The benefit of the superior intelligence cannot be overemphasized. My doberman took three years to mature and she is still playful at age 4. I think one advantage of the boxer is that it's easier to socialize, but if you work at it, as I have, and your Doberman will be fine around neighbors and other children. Doberman fits in very nicely to the family and is a significant part of the family unit. The security side of the Doberman is another feature that comes in handy because no training is needed, including for obedience. At least that's been my experience. Great video and thank you very much!
Never had a Doberman but have a Boxer and she is the sweetest thing. Definitely not for protection but she will alert. Loved this content/comparison and wish there were more like it as I think it would help others choose which dog might be best for them.
@Doberman Planet Great video, 20 years in the pet care field and have four Boxers. worked with many Dobes over the years we always say Dobes are just Boxers with beaks because they are so similar.
I was a Boxer owner for many years and never thought I would own any other breed. Sadly my Boxer passed and I couldn't bring myself to get another as I felt I would compare then to my last one. I researched and settled on the Doberman. I feel like I really missed out on a great breed. I wish I had one of each. Both outstanding breeds. Thanks for another great video!
Recently lost my dog and are thinking about the next one. Have been interested in Doberman for a long time but also reading about boxers. This video are perfect!! Thank you ❤️
My cousin has been raising Boxers for 40 years. I have been around them too. I find them wonderful. Also much more attractive physically than to me the rather homely Doberman. I'll never understand why Westminster obsesses over Dobermans. I also am a big fan of Greyhounds, Mastiffs, Frenchies and Chinese Crested Dogs.
Thank's so much for answering my questions. I was a Boxer owner and loved them as they are big babies and think they are lap dogs lol. Stubborn is right but they learn after a while. I am going to choose the Doberman for my next pup very soon, i always wanted one and love their interaction. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experience. Have a great day :)
First dog I ever owned on my own as an adult was a boxer. I could never own another boxer because he was so special that particular dog will always be perfection of the breed for me. But I will always recommend them to anyone who is considering owning one. I currently own a rottweiler and am subscribed to your channel as I plan on my next dog to be a doberman. My husband grew up having a doberman and loves the breed and I have long been interested in them, but he wanted a rottweiler this time around, so I'm in research mode for a doberman to join the family a few years down the line.
The stoic nature of the doberman vs the clownish playful nature of the boxer is a signficant difference and depending upon what you want in a dog should be considered. Its the boxer for me!
My best friend has a gorgeous red doberman. I took care of him for 6 months and he and I connected right away. When it came for him interacting with my boxer, I noticed he likes nipping/pinch bitting. I think thats comes with the long snout - maybe.
Boxers are way more playful and affectionate! But both breeds are beautiful looking! It’s a preference in choosing in what breed you choose, both great breeds!
Proud Boxer owner here. From 8weeks to now 7 yr old male. My best friend. Mine is very protective of me. Puts himself between myself and anybody, my grown son included.
Subscribed. I love most working class breeds. Grew up with Dobermans and staffies, but got into Akita rescue pretty early and stuck with the breed. Them and pittbulls. Was kinda surprised to see the comparison of these two and that's what caught my eye about your video. They may be similar in physique but as you listed, so different in personality. All the stigma that comes with a Doberman unfortunately also comes with the pittbull. Both unwarranted. Great video.
My breed is the Boxer although after owning both of them, The Dobermann absolutly was one of my best dogs ever owned. Do not forget that both dogs need a sturdy hand. You need to have experience with dogs. Not just experience with any dog, but real experience before you start with one of them. They are smart and they need attention, walking and someone with a strong self esteem. Both dogs are my ones to pick. I love both. Dobermann is harder to train, which sounds strange because of there intelligence, but you need to be consistant. in both cases, you are the boss. keeping this in mind, you will have the best dog ever!! And indeed the Boxer is the clouny one of the two.
I’ve owned both. This is extremely accurate from my experience. Both are great dogs and became true family members, the Doberman was more refined, the boxer was just fun loving. Both grew up as playmates with two little boys and loved those boys for 10 years. Both were protective and loyal but never aggressive.
@J. S. boxers
@J. S. I second boxers, they are very good with small children. I think they see them as playmates imo
@J. S. THE BOXERS ALWAYS HAVE HEALTH ISSUES AND THEY DONT STOP FARTING. I WOULDNT GET ONE THEY SUCK
I owned nothing but boxers for the past 20 years. Love them
Same are the best dogs ever
I recommend a Boxer for my mom after losing her baby from a freak accident. Definitely the best doggy😁🐾
Me too! They are amazing and so much love!
Boxers rule . You can’t trust dobermans
Hands down . The boxers . You can’t trust the Dobermans .
I had an American bulldog that was on a par with Boxers. I do love the bully breeds!
I've owned a few boxers over the years. Definitely my favorite breed. I've always loved Dobermans but haven't had a lot of experience around them. With that being said, the intelligence level on boxers are much higher than a lot of "experts" give them credit for. Good video btw
It depends between individuals, maybe yours were smarter than the average
No boxers are very smart we have had quite a few in the family but they do hide it behind the crazy clown act for most of their life's
Boxers are also like “Lay’s Potato Chip’s”.....you can’t have just one! 😉
@@fireandworms Good advice. Thank you.
Agreed. As playful as my boxer is, theres been a few instances where I’ve said to myself, “ok, I think he’ll react EXACTLY like he needs to when or if that time comes”
They just seem to have great instincts
Without hesitation….boxers….fun loving, loyal, affectionate …. A wonderful family dog and companion. If needing a guard dog, Doberman’s are certainly more intimidating.
I have only had Boxers in my life and I honestly could not be more thankful or imagine having any other breed in my heart.
I have 1 of each. I love both breeds but my next pup is another Doberman. The smartest dog I’ve ever trained. Thanks for the info !
@@thedoober6002 same here
I have had two boxers, the first one a female and the sweetest dog you could ever have.
Good for you on standing your ground with assholes
Hahaha!! 🤣🤣good job! Proud for you and the doberman 🤩🤩🐾🐾🐾greets from belgium from Finn the doberman and Maja 😉
I am a tiny woman with two full grown Dobermans. If people annoy me I tell them I am not sure if I can control my dogs (which is not true but the a-holes don’t need to know). I love your answer, did the right thing! 👏
@@poughkeepsie8516 I should have told him "Go for it. I hope the surgeon can successfully reattach your foot." (That's the New Yorker in me. 😁)
I’ve owned one of each and have to go with boxers. Boxers are more difficult as puppies by just pure mischief but they are also more loving and personable they are like having another human around while a Doberman more of an impressive dog. Both are wonderful. I just love my boxer
Boxers think there human lol ,there such wonderful dog's, it hurts too much when it's time to say goodbye to them. Wish they could live forever
I totally agree, I've had two boxers & a boxer cross & my next dog will be another boxer,......or even two!!
Does your boxer bring you a toy when you come home and do a happy dance like my boy?
You made a great decision. They are such awesome dogs.
We came down to these 2 breeds and chose the boxer . Love both breeds!! I wanted a family guardian and my boxer and s second to none to this .
Thank you John for making this comparison but naaaah. My first was a Doberman, my last will be a Doberman too.
That's great to hear, Pough! It is cool to see the similarities and differences between the two breeds.I totally support you in that decision! ;)
That staring into my soul as I type this is hilarious 🤣🤣🤣🤣 but thanks for the info
While I love both breeds, the Doberman is still my favorite.
Me 2
Me 3..😃
Me 4
Me 5
Yes! Both breeds are definitely great dogs! Thanks so much for taking the time to leave this comment!
Lol
But they can also turn off that silliness in a snap if they feel that their humans are being threatened.
Doberman is my pick. I absolutely love them and have seen the loyalness of this breed first hand as well as being able to train her in as little as one repetition. She is very loyal and extremely protective of our grandkids and our pregnant daughters. I don’t know that I would ever have another breed.
Just realized you compared a German with a German. ….And the German won. The right one 🤣.
Love from a German Doberman mommy 🙋♀️🇩🇪
Great Job!
LOL! I agree. John is a little off on this one😜
Two great German breeds but its the Boxer for me all day long, had 5 up too now and they have all been a blessing.
Both beautiful breeds!
So glad you choose a Dobie. Arlo is a great representative of the breed!
Aww thanks! So glad we chose a Dobie, too!
Doberman are gorgeous but Boxers are perfect. I have 2 Boxers and they are a great family friendly dog that play nice with all other dogs. ❤️❤️❤️
It's great to see dog lovers like you man
Next I want dobermann vs German shepherd
Thanx!
I kinda wanna see a vid with the similarities and differences between all the Pinscher breeds- mini, German, and dobie. Other than obvious size.
That's a great idea, Amanda! That topic has just been added to our list of potential upcoming videos! Thanks so much for reaching out!
I thought your assessment was spot on. I have had both breeds. For my personality I like the boxer better but this in no way a knock on the dob.
Is boxers are protective ? Like doberman i mean fearless ?
Had both love both have two Boxers now complete love
I loved my boxer. 80 lbs of love but yet protective. He passed in March and there is not a day that goes by I dont think of him.
Haha! It definitely would have been a little different, Angelica!
My opinion is absolutely biased, be that as it may, there will never be a better breed than the Doberman
german shepherds are used by military and police for a reason...
@@sherrcon yeah police also use dodge for their police cars.
We love all the support you have for this stellar breed! They definitely will steal your heart!
@@sherrcon I have always had German shepherd s there a good will look after you I use to go to bed and leave all windows open 😂👌
Doberman hands down in my book. Always owned them.
We love them too, Debbie! So great to hear from you. Thanks for reaching out! Don't be a stranger!
Train-ability makes a good slave, not an intelligent animal. Boxers are very stubborn and are very likely to not do what you ask unless you make it worth it for them. This does not mean they do not understand the command. It just means they are thinking about whether they want to do it.
Maybe yours!
I think we need a part 2....health issues, separation anxiety, heat/cold.....those are big things to consider with both breeds
I agree.
Yes!
*Once Boxer, always Boxer!*
Yeah and that number of the Dr for Boxer intelligence doesn´t add up.
Think Abbot and Costello. lol
Boxers for me! I was impressed with the assessment though, very thorough and accurate! Well done!
DOBERMAN.....NUMBER 1!! ALWAYS AND FOR EVER!🤩🤩thanks for the nice video John, greets from belgium from Finn the DOBERMAN and Maja 🙂🐾🐾🐾
Hi, Maja! Always great to hear from you! Dobermans certainly have stolen our hearts! Give Finn a treat from Arlo! :)
@@DobermanPlanet 😃i wil, hi 5🐾 from Finn the doberman and hug from Maja 🙂
@Doberman Planet Great video, 20 years in the pet care field and have four Boxers. worked with many Dobes over the years we always say Dobes are just Boxers with beaks because they are so similar.
Thanks, Still all about my Dobermans.. I currently have 2 girls.. and will always have a Dobie.. love them!
I am a Boxer person. I am only half a person without my Boxer. Ive had 4 Boxers and i love Brindle females. They really do steal my heart.
Great video! My one year old Doberman Banelli and I always watch your channel.
I can't figure out which of the 3 Boxers he's talking about. I'm going with American.
My best friend has a gorgeous red doberman. I took care of him for 6 months and he and I connected right away. When it came for him interacting with my boxer, I noticed he likes nipping/pinch bitting. I think thats comes with the long snout - maybe.
Did they play well together? Are they same sex?
Boxers are way more playful and affectionate! But both breeds are beautiful looking! It’s a preference in choosing in what breed you choose, both great breeds!
Proud Boxer owner here. From 8weeks to now 7 yr old male. My best friend. Mine is very protective of me. Puts himself between myself and anybody, my grown son included.
This cracks me up. At one time I was deciding between the two breeds as well. I went with Doberman primary due to its intelligence.
And indeed the Boxer is the clouny one of the two.
yep, gonna get 2 boxers in the upcoming year
