    Beer? That looked like Sioux City Sasparilla you and Batjack were embibing. On a side note, without aspirin, tylenol or advil; beer was considered a pain reliever for the working man of that time.

      That's actually false. There was plenty of clean water from streams, wells, underground deposits, and people knew how to filter and boil water until it was safe to drink. One easy way to disprove this myth is this: beer dehydrates. Now, beer was still quite a common drink, but because it both acted as a light pain reliever (all alchohol is, but beer was the cheapest & tastiest) and because it was packed with calories. Real proper beer is like a meal in a mug, since it's made from barley.

    • @ArizonaGhostriders
      @ArizonaGhostriders  5 лет назад +14

      @@testname4464 Matthew is right, and so are you. There is evidence of people getting cholera in the Old West (The 1873 cholera epidemic several states). from unsafe drinking water. However, alcohol does dehydrate.

    Pilsner is a good choice for an Old West beer, considering it was one of the very first clear golden beers and was originally brewed in the early-mid 19th century. In a world that had only known cloudy and murky brews it must have been quite a hit. P.S., don't recall when it became a bad thing in the US to let your boy have a beer, but my Pa took me along to pubs, bars, saloons during the early 1950s. They didn't allow unaccompanied kids hanging around, or getting drunk, but most the establishments we visited had child sized beer mugs (as in your photo) so a son could have a beer with his father.

    • @brittakriep2938
      @brittakriep2938 4 года назад +2

      I am from Germany. About 40 years ago you saw here nearly only clear (filtated) beer. Now you see many unclear ( unfiltrated) beers, for the reason, the beer of the good old quality beer time'. I think this is simply a marketing trick, because in the old days, when unfiltrated beer was usual, the clear( filtrated) surely was marketed as ,the New beer for a New time'.

    Drinking beer was an American necessity from the beginning. Wikipedia about the 'Mayflower' ~ "Passengers consumed large amounts of alcohol such as beer with meals. This was known to be safer than water, which often came from polluted sources causing diseases."
    Supposedly, the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock, rather than Virginia, because they ran out of beer. [Only NON-beer drinkers would think this historical event was a myth!]
    Pilgrims and beer drinking leads to an understanding of the famous John Wayne quote, "Whoa, take 'er easy there, Pilgrim."
