    My favourite holster is the cavalry holster, or something referred too as the reverse draw holster.
    The huge difference between a cavalry holster and the iconic normal western holster is the gun position. With a cavalry, the revolver is faced backwards with its butt faced forwards. To draw the gun, you had to twist your wrist to grab the grip, and twirl your wrist back around while taking the gun out so you can take aim.
    Although it sounds more impractical, with alot of practise you could draw the gun just as fast or faster than with a normal revolver.
    It was used commonly by soldiers in the civil war. And while you wont find many gunslingers in the wild west sporting such holsters, some did use them. Including the famous Wild Bill Hickok.
    Its a shame the holster isnt commonly shown in movies, im guessing because the draw technique for cavalry seems more complex for actors.
    Still, its my favourite holster out of them all

    My Xs great uncke was a Parker Marshal in Ark. Her dad had 2 36 Navy pistols. One with a paper thin sheath with no belt loop. He took these guns to a gunsmith. one was found to be in great condition with all numbers on parts being the same. He surmised that this gun went through the war, then when the owner came home, he put it up. The other had had parts changes and had much wear. This one he assumed went with the sheath.

Could you discuss the buscadero (gunfighter- grips are below belt) used for B-Western, left and right rigs, holsters at hip bone, with the grips above the belt, and strong side/crossdraw combination with grips above belt? Several yrs ago, I saw some leather (from the movie) done by Will G. The then owner displayed it at a gun show, in Iowa, he spoke of the leather of the actors including Pete Fonda, and how the work was period correct. Ironically, some of the brass in the loops was, , , -Starline-.

    • @ArizonaGhostriders
      @ArizonaGhostriders  4 года назад

      Will didn't supply the dummy bullets. That was the armorer or prop folks. Also, you can't tell the differene from Starline to Winchester on film.

  • @PalmettoNDN
    @PalmettoNDN 2 года назад +1

    I have a pretty narrow interest (currently) in who I might want to portray in that period. That is a a mixedblood Native American lawman (what I am today) just after the Civil War up until about 1875. The cool thing is Civil War stuff was common during that period, as most lawmen were veterans or children or siblings of veterans and a lot of that surplus equipment was available and cheap. Indians had lost everything after the Removal Act and we had even less money and resources than white Southerners. I eventually would like to have a western Indian Police impression and maybe a Reconstruction era South Carolina deputy sheriff impression. Both would be about the same equipment. I modified Civil War era holsters for this impression. I just cut them folded the flap under and used rawhide straps (paleo kydex) wrapped around the holster to provide tension. It has good retention and the draw could accommodate someone way faster than me. That fast draw stuff is movie nonsense anyway, and I'm only interested in history and this is why I will never do CAS. I'm too much of a stitch Nazi.

    • @ArizonaGhostriders
      @ArizonaGhostriders  2 года назад

      Good plan on the holster with the wraparound flap. Very common right after the war. The fast draw holsters of today are fallacy, but there was a speedy draw back then. Had to be.

    Hey Santee, those are some awesome holsters. Do like the ‘Hand of God’ one. My new ones based on one used by Jesse James but it’s black. I never knew Hardin had sewn in ‘holsters’ in his coat! Thank you for these. A photo of my great great grandfather shows a walker (or army colt) sitting in his waistband. Scary choice of placement! xD How common was it to find people competing over who was quickest on the draw? I wonder if QuickDraw is a cool Hollywood idea rather than a cool historical fact. I’ve been watching ‘Godless’ recently and that Deputy, Whitey, he’s always twirling his guns and saying how quick he is. Reminds me of Tombstone with Johnny Ringo & Doc..that infamous cup scene. I think being able to draw quick is great..IF you have the eye and experience to hit the target immediately. Then again a wrong man can be a dead man pretty quick too.

    Another good one Santee-in a future piece could you show how the holster is shaped to the gun? I had no idea how it was done many years ago until a friend showed me the process and I couldn't believe I hadn't though of it myself.He wrapped the gun in plastic so that it was protected from water,soaked the holster in water until pliable,then put the gun into it and moulded the leather to the gun.When the leather dries out it retains the shape and fits snugly.Was this the way they always did it or a modern take on it?

    Curious Santee, on the conversions & holsters, namely the 1858's, how did they carry those little 38 RF/CF-the cartridge loops are bigger than the cartridges? Belt pouch?

    Hey Santee! I noticed in the new video game Red Dead Redemption they have your character wear a hip holster on the right hip and a cross draw holster with the barrel pointing to the left. If you had to draw both quickly at the same time how would you do that effectively? Was the cross draw holster more more being on horseback or just a style?

      You wouldn't. I think that is for the strong side. When one is empty, you employ the other.
